This is the first video I’ve found on RUclips that offers a well thought out progression like this. The additional yoga transition to chattaranga is very helpful. Thank-you Shana!!
John Swanson thanks for this comment! So glad it helped! :)
Great tutorial. I finally managed to get the transition from crow to handstand thanks to this tip with the yoga strap ;-) The strap gives a lot of support and control on the ascent and descent. Thank you !
you did it??? so very awesome!!! yesss!!! 🎉🎉🎉
and here's the video on handstand to crow if you want any help on the downhill run: ruclips.net/video/NKjhbq2wx3I/видео.html
My video of the day ... done tremendous progress in jump back from crow to chaturanga (taken it step by step, no rush). Breakthrough was pushing my chin on triceps to get my hips up. Excellent !
Have a great day sweet Shana !
Mavis AHOR that is so awesome to hear, Mavis! Yay! Thanks for sharing and so glad it helped! Sending big love your way!
Shana, you crack me up! I think my favorite part of this (entirely wonderful) video is when you say, "The ol' squish and press" like it's a common phrase. You do great work! Namaste! :)
thanks so much!
it is normal for your wrists to be sore if you are not used to this type of extension. over time, the pain will go away, but in the meantime, one way to mitigate the discomfort is to turn your hands outwards a bit, so your middle fingers face the corners of the mat instead of straight forward.
take breaks if your wrists REALLY hurt and do a little at a time. you will eventually get used to the movement and it won't hurt any more! :)
I'm at half-primary in Ashtanga and next up is Crow pose. I hope to one day be able to do what you did in this video. Thanks for the preparatory exercises.
+David Crisler it's all just practice, practice, practice...and intelligence. hope my videos help! :)
+shana meyerson They are helping immensely. I am practicing handstand against the wall using your vids and when ready will move to handstands away from the wall using your vid for that. Thank you very much for demystifying a lot of this stuff!
you're welcome! :D
i am 11 and you've made me be able to do that I do gymnastics not yoga but my coach was proud of me i am a level 7 in gymnastics and i just wanted to say thank you xx
Thank you. Very generous of you to share your knowledge and experience.
Shana, thanks for the video. Look easy for you. Hopefully I can do it very soon. 😀
+Simbee Soh it took a lot of time before this was easy, believe me. a long time.
but the strap makes an enormous difference!
Most generous teacher on earth and the best
Thank you so much! 🙏
@@YOGAthletica first of all, I really can't believe that you reply back to me always, and clear my all silliest doubts, is it you really or some guardian angel 😇? 🤔
😃 it’s really me and I appreciate your taking the time to write. So, I will always write back as a form of thanks. 🙏
@@YOGAthletica I would have asked for your whatsapp number, trust me not to bother you but just to express how highly I regard you and bow onto you 🙏
@@YOGAthletica but it's ok as you are replying me back, the day Ill be worthy enough, destiny shall reward me with that too, 🙏
This is really good stuff. I have been busy doing the crow push ups this morning. Somehow the flat back stuff that my coach was describing makes a lot more sense after watching this. I can do the jump back to chaturanga from crow, but I need to experiment with the boat variation. I don't think I am strong enough to do the full measure of the pose yet... I think my coach is more optimistic about how strong I am than I am 🙃Where did you get the strap that you are using here? I haven't seen one like it before and I can see how it would be really useful. I am parking this video in my line up to watch again and again. Thank you!!!
Hi Sarah! Thanks so much! And listen to your coach...you are so strong! And you are strong enough! 💥
As to the strap, it really is so helpful! I am a very big fan of the elastic strap for this particular press. It was given to me as a gift from the creator/inventor of YogiToes. She also made these cool straps. Unfortunately, when Manduka purchased YogiToes, they discontinued the strap. 😔
However...talk to Chisa on Instagram. (Do you know her? If not, you can find her in my friends list) She has straps like this manufactured to go around your legs to intensify workouts. Not sure if they would be too big for this press (you need to get pretty tight around your arms)...but I bet they make small size ones that would work! ❤️❤️❤️
Shana, thanks for that, great video. Keep up the good work.
This is inspiring and you make it look so easy! I'm still trying to learn how to do this!
thank you! this one took me a while to figure out, but once you get it, you'll be surprised how natural and easy the movement can actually be.
thanks! :)
for poses that you are using the strap to access a shoulder opener (such as cow-face pose or full single pigeon), i prefer a standard strap that does not stretch.
but for handstands and inversions, i really prefer a stretchy strap (which you can purchase from yogitoes).
if you cannot get a stretchy strap, measure the strap so that the loop, flattened out, is as wide as (or slightly wider than) shoulder-width. it's harder to work with, but still doable!
Wow, that is a great tutorial. Thank you. I will get private lessons from you.
shana meyerson
Thank you. I have never done any Yoga. Perhaps, I join a yoga class to learn some basics before I take skype lessons?
i can teach at any level, Ajmal Rahi, but it's also a good idea to take some classes. :)
Your videos are so helpful and amusing. Thanks so much for sharing everything in such detail, step-by-step. I wanted to ask how the strap should be used if it does not have any give to it. Thanks!
is pressing from crow easier then a straddle press to handstand? would doing this help me learn the straddle press?
Thanks Shana! I love your videos!
thanks for watching...and taking the time to comment! :)
Your videos are awesome! I've been practicing a lot of handstands and my wrists quickly get sore...any suggestions on how to stretch or strengthen them?
Great video ... i have a lot of work ahead of me
You're just brilliant. I can do a pretty decent crow and some of the variants (parsva, koundinya, ekapada baka and ekapada koundinya) in it and a handstand against the wall and off of it for a few seconds. Will give this a try though i know that to take off both legs from the triceps upwards takes a huge amount of core strength. Thanks for your guidance.
thank you so much, vikram. i really appreciate that. it does take a lot of core strength, but even more, it takes a lot of core control. having the strength is important...learning to use it is key. :)
shana meyerson you're absolutely right. I've been trying to perform a lift (float) and jump back from forward fold. I'm finding it very difficult to get my legs off the floor no matter how much I lean forward. And what's perplexing is that I engage my core in some asanas very well like navasana, l-sit etc.... But can't seem to do the same for float. Any tips or exercises I can do to nail it? Appreciate your response.
yes...try this video: ruclips.net/video/u1Q6cQEnlSk/видео.html
let me know if it helps. :)
shana meyerson lot of information in there. I will try that and surely let you know. 🙏
vikram murthy I don't think its strength as such..it's more of technique. I have been trying to do it since beginning of the year and yeaterday I saw someone do it, so I got down on the floor and tried to do it and boom! Did it!
While lifting up the legs from crow, are the feet and together? I mean what is the right position of the legs while pressing up?
It is definitely easier if you open the knees apart, but I do recommend at least keeping the feet touching or very close together.
@@YOGAthletica thankyou so much for replying, though my questions or the words aren't really clear, you are too kind 🙏
@@navjyothora4034 you were totally clear. :) thanks for taking the time to comment.
@@YOGAthletica please i request you that you don't say thanks as already you are giving so much 🙏
Thank you Shana - this was super helpful! Just another quick question: when you jump back into chatarunga from crow, do your knees some off yours arms before coming back or do they kind of slide off? i can get into eda pada bakasana (stepping back right and left) individually..but when it comes to going as a set, it all goes pear shaped, lol. (maybe i have some fear too..)
As always - great instruction, tips and drills!
great question!
if your only goal is to jump from crow to chatauranga, you can just sort of slide off, as you say, and shoot back.
however, if you are working this transition as a stepping stone to pressing up to handstand, you do want to find some lift before shooting your legs back. :)
Thank you so much! I had another go in Mysore this morning but i think fear is holding me back so i just hang out in bakasana LOL. Thank you always for your wonderful videos and advice!
get brave! at first just fling! legs back, heart forward (elbows bent). once that gets easy, then you can back off and make it more of a float...
shana meyerson the ole fear factor eh. The hardest thing to conquer. Thanks again!
let me know when you do. ;)
if you get the chance, go to my YOGAthletica facebook page and watch karen x's video that i posted yesterday morning...

personally, i think the straddle press is far easier. check out my pressing up video (how to press into handstand basics yoga instruction tutorial) to learn how to press up. people are really digging the video and saying it helps them a lot!
and, yes, a lot of the fundamentals of pressing up from crow will help you to straddle, as well. :)
a little confused are you saying u should externally rotate your shoulders during a handstand?
yes. it keeps the shoulders broad and the base stable.
Hi! I was just wondering where do you live?
los angeles! :)
you're 11 and you can do this???
you rock!!!
see you in the olympics!
Nice
i really struggle with this transition.... even with a strap I feel like getting my butt in the air is impossible! I can do handstands quite well, and crow pose, also the jump to chaturanga... its the last piece of the puzzle I'm missing... I think its called abs...
+Arian Levanael the secret to this pose is understanding that the work comes from lifting the hips, not the legs. think of it as a pivot of the hips more than anything. there is a lot of core, but it also uses the complementary back muscles, as well. can you do it with your head pressed against the wall? sometimes the work in these videos can take a while to master. stick with it...when you have that a-ha moment (hips! hips!), it becomes a lot easier. ;)
shana meyerson yes i can do it with my head against the wall... I cal almost do it with a strap... but i seem to have a fear of going over or face planting! Will try the hips focus instead of the legs... i know there is a core in there somewhere!! thanks for the response!
yes...core, core core! if you are afraid of flipping, you can work in front of a wall or even put pillows in front of you. :) but you want to do it with the strap before moving on to the fully monty.
opening your collar bones, looking up like crazy and pressing into your fingertips will all help to stop you from flipping if you think you are going over...
shana meyerson head pressed against the wall?how, show us!
you never heard of the "ol' squish and press"??? ;)
Looks like you're wearing white and gold...
Andrew Serranzana not black and blue? ;) the mind plays tricks that way! you should see me in a dress. ;)
rad
Lee Delegard :D
shana meyerson the way you broke this down into steps and preliminary necessary poses was very helpful and smart. you're a great teacher
thank you so much, Lee Delegard! did you get the pose? or feel like you're on the path? :D
