The problem with VW these days is they are still building the peoples cars but pricing them like entry lvl BMW’s.
I say this as a fan whose first car was an ‘87 GLI.
The old buses had a variety of engine sizes. Often people replace an aging engine with a later year. From 1950-1966 they went from 20 something hp to almost 60.
"Look at this quirk and features!!!" I about fell off my chair
18:54 Oh the editor is dirty for putting in that photo of the air-cooled bug 😂
😂😂😂😂
He's not wrong though
Would have preferred it stayed as the cheap bus that college kids could buy and got hot box at concerts with - not a rich SoCal mom van.
38:20 the Kubelwagen was NOT 4WD, can't believe I'm the one telling you!
4WD was developed for the Schwimmwagen, because they needed the extra front driven wheels so it could pull itself out of the water.
(Not yelling, just quite giddy that I could still pull a fact out that I learned originally from Gran Turismo 5, however many years ago that came out)
does the schwimmwagen came before vw iltis?
@@vercingetorige400 Yes, the Schwimmwagen was a ww2 vehicle. It was the amphibious variant of the Kubelwagen.
The Type 87 Komanderwagen was 4wd, as was the type 182 iltis.
@@fraserwright9482 didn’t know about the Type 87, interesting
Awesome show - my fav journalist and his friend! Giving sh*t to VW is tradition - especially over here in Germany, that does not mean you don't like them, it's giving respect and wanting them to do better. Everybody in the world knows you love VW´s and you want them to do better, you are in club! After this fine teaser now I can´t wait to watch the show - several times! Can´t wait to see ahem the quirks and features 😂
Derek just gave me a flashback to my Dad's 1992 Citroën ZX with that bloody infrared central locking sensor and my dad having to shield it and get it basically on the windows pointing at the sensor to get his car to unlock.
I am listening to this in Bockenhein, Frankfurt am Main, while driving a Skoda Superb with a VW Golf R 2.0 E888 in all its turbo lagged glory pushing some Haldex not Quatro. I plan on driving the wheels off this thing and transitioning to an ID Buzz. Here's hoping VW survives and can address the electrics and UI in the next 5 years....
"Please continue to join the Hagerty Driver's Club, which includes sexual innuendo" 🤣🤣🤣 Now I want them to add random features every time they do that plug at the beginning of each episode
53:00 LMAOOOOOO NOT THE A-TEAM
My 99 Citroen Xsara actualy has a lock for the rear folding seats, it locks out the buttons, it's a switch in the back of the seats, always lock it when not using the seat folded
What... An early upload! Stop my racing heart!
Off to a great start too !
31:41 Jason is right! Bob Wallace used to fit a steel plate spacer in SVs in Arizona. But when I asked him in the 90s at his workshop why he explained that the diff/gearbox splits in two if you try to do a burnout. They found this out when magazines tested them in the late 60's and this was his "fix" and oil feed to the cams were his thing
amazing, here applaud the grasp of the big picture enginering of design by jason
50:30 emergency Funk release on a Tesla only works if the 12-volt system is dead.
My 93 w140 has the ir locking, derek was right!
always the best way to start the week
Gm went all front wheel drive in the early eighties
Would absolutely be in the market for one of these if they had put the GTI engine or a V6 in it. An “adventure mobile” with 200 miles of electric range just doesn’t make sense.
Been trying to adjust to the new set but ngl, the old one was better.
We had that stupid IR remote in our w202 too, never understood why my parents ordered that instead of sorely needed air con. Luckily VW-Wurst and Gewürzketchup are available in our local supermarket. In the 70s VW didn't change of its own accord to FWD they bought it first from Daimler (Audi), later from NSU. The first new gen VW I would consider the K70 replacing the hilariously bad 411. One of the worst reviewed cars of the Autotest series which I am currently watching.
neither this time vw it's changing to its accord ;)
@TheCarmudgeonShow ..... Jason... You swapped your plate onto the road test car and BUZZED your JYNAH ... 🫨💦
dang i got the free ketchup, but not the rest of that swag....
I don't think the Buzz is in a position to save VW for the very reason that Derek said. There isn't much of anything compelling to go with the Buzz at the moment. With the new Beetle there were the Mk.4s. The Icons episode is great. It felt just like the Piech episode but with an emphasis on the history of VW in general rather than being about Piech's career.
1 hour and 21 minutes??!!! YEAAAAHHHHH
Do I watch this first or the Icons?
Icons!
i'll to the reverse i'll tell you about it
full on Michael Scott from the beginning. Or was it Michael Scarn?
Yes you are.
Oh wow so early, I appreciate it ! Sometimes I wonder if Camissa is a Masochist for getting these many cars together. I look forward to seeing the video.
Id4’s are catching on in west Michigan near the Grand Rapids area where I live. Idk about anywhere else. But talk about a sad vehicle.
That is a nice VanJynah!
Mazda is in the midst of transitioning from economy to entry level luxury and it seems to be going well.
unfortunately, the Buzz is just an ID3 made to look pretty...but, all its flaws are present and a van as a city car/short commuter is not the greatest idea.
Literally whoever buys it could not possibly care less about any of that. Buyers will buy it solely because it looks pretty. The end.
@@PigglyWigglyDeluxe there are tons of other 70k vehicles that look pretty. Maybe it is a California thing and I don't get it. 🤷🏻
Should the electric offering have just been called the "E-*legacy name".... Like the E Golf. E Jetta, E Tiguan.... At least then gen pop would know what the car is trying to be even if they looked different from their gas counterpart
Also please can we have like a few mins per episode just doing a run down of your cool background cars pretty please :)
Early show!
Sitting in the plastic Hellscape that was the interior of a German Spec Buzz was a farce considering the price.
Yet here I am looking forward to Jason's take.
Let's goooo
Vee Dub in da house
When are we getting Hyphen On The Icons!!!
0:00 that’s what she said! There! I said it!
Should have made the buzz a tdi w/ 4 motion and you can have my money. I will never pay 60k plus for a EV hunk of junk that has a range of 200 miles. I've had 12 or so VWs in the past, but I'm done with them as they make garbage.
Lol calling out Doug
oh stop the subaru hate.. hey I bought one because of a great lease rate...
I was hoping the ID Buzz would be KIA Soul size and cost around 40k. This is too big and super expensive. It is the new (Mercedes) R-Class.
The ID-4 is that car you are looking for then. The buzz was always needing to be large to pull the inspiration from the original bus.
