You're taking excellent care of them and are very loving, but in the wild they run many miles each day, do they get to run around in an enclosure outside or in the house?
Hey Cody I will be getting a Prairie Dog soon from a breeder and I would like to know what is best for food, cage, bedding and what are their play habits? Can you do a video of tips/tricks to getting a new Prairie Dog and how to help them adjust? Thanks, your videos have been the most helpful!! Thanks Angie -Alabama
Hey Alyssa Scola thanks for all the support! I got my 2 prairie dogs from a place in San Marcos Texas called janda exotics. They are both neutered and spayed and I I think I paid like $250 per prairie dog. Girls are generally a little bit more expensive to fix because their surgery is more invasive.
Hey Cody, your videos are so sweet. Love to see such kindness and caring with animals. I am debating on getting a prarie dog for my daughter and wonder if they smell bad. In the past we had a sugar glider and even with washing bedding and cage weekly the odor was so strong it made me ill. I have heard the same for ferrets and wonder if prarie dogs are as bad. Your little furry friends seem so happy and healthy it makes me want to run out and get a couple but want to be fully prepared! Thanks so much for the great videos!
Hey Debbie O , as far as the smell of them, as long as you keep their cage clean they have minimal to no smell at all. I just switch out their shavings completely like every couple of weeks. Some times if it has been a while, I will even give them a little bath in the sink with warm water and some baby shampoo or puppy shampoo. Hope that helps!
Hi Cody, I just happened upon your videos. I used to have pet rats (which I loved very much) I was wondering if there is any noticeable differences between prairie dog sexes like there typically is with rats? (Males tend to be more snuggley, females tend to be more into exploring in rats although also depends on the rats of course). I am considering getting two prairie dogs next year once I've done enough research to feel comfortable taking care of them and preparing a home for them ^_^. Thanks for making such great videos! Keep it up!
Hi Cody. Do you know the average life of the PD? I was looking for some info and I got 4 years, 2 years, 8 years, so I don’t know with is the right answer. I just got an email for Janda and I will be putting a deposit for the Puppy. Thanks again for tell me where I can get the Pd🤗
Hey Marcia, I've always heard if keep healthy, then their life expectancy in captivity is 10-12 yrs. in the wild it is much shorter due to all of their predators.
Hi! So I have a prairie dog, and I’m still unsure like what kind of veggies and fruits to give him, I was wondering if anyone could tell me what would be safe for him to eat? And I heard that I can feed him coconut oil is that true ?
On Facebook, look up Gena Seaberg. She is a literal Black-Tailed Prairie Dog expert. On her FB page she has a paper that she's written that goes into a great amount of details on how to best take care of a pet Prairie Dog. I see that you posted 2 years ago. I hope that you don't get this information too late...
Lisa L. Howard omg thank you, I still have my prairie dog ( Kodak) and have still been taking care of him in the blind. This helps Bunches thank you so much

Hey Cody, love your videos! I have an 11 week old prairie dog (love him, he's real smart) and bought the same cage. I was wondering if there was a website or some place to get those specific metal trays. Thanks.
That is a common noise that they make. Some call it a jump-yip. Others call it a Yee-Yip. I call it the Yee-haa. No matter what you call it it is a sound that means different things. It can mean 'all-clear' or 'I'm okay'. To "I'm doing ecstatic!". Mine usually does it when a door squeaks or when someone comes home. She often does it when I cough - but NEVER had I ever had one do it when I sneezed!!! They have been reported to have an extensive verbal language. In fact, in the wild they have recorded that they "alert" differently when different people walked through their town. But, when the same person walked through, they gave the same 'alerts'!!!
Jason Stone it was a happy bark. Prairie dogs will often greet their owner with that bark. It’s generally a “I’m so glad to see you!” Kind of bark. They are very vocal. They will also do little tips when agitated and grind their teeth when you give them scratches they enjoy. They will also grin at you when they are happy to see you. It can be scary to a first timer because it looks like they are gonna chomp you!
I ave 2 prairie dogs and your videos are very helpful please keep posting new videos even if the aren't informational I love watching them thanks!

Where do you get your Prairie dog?
I would like to know about the trays as well. The kriter nation cages I've seen have a smaller plastic landing.
