When i got my noice induced tinnitus, i also developed hyperacusis. It was hard feeling the pain when my children were laughing too loud.
Now after 14 months, my tinnitus has backed up far away in the backround. My hyperacusis however has dissapeared completely.
I don't know if i should recommend it for others, but i think it worked for me. Not avoiding noise. I work in a restaurant. And after getting my hyperacusis i was pretty afraid of going back to work as restaurants can be very loud places.
It was actually the first day back when a coworker dropped a few dishes. The pain in my head was horrible but i knew it would happen again and that i couldn't quit my job. And of course it happened again and again and again.
And here comes the interesting thing. The more often i was confronted to those painfull noises (of course not painfull for average people) the more my ears seemed to readapt to them. It got less and less painfull with each week. I think my brain just needed some time (and some noise) to get back in line. Now the hyperacusis is gone completely.
    Cheers

I think this is oddly right..
I habituated on my 7th month and there was times where my T was so low i could barely noticed it and now my T spiked up i was thinkin maybe its because i started wear my earwax earplugs which isolates from any sound i could barely hear anything from that earplugs..
I should start not wearing them from now on and we shall see..
      Thanks for ur info btw..

After seven months of tinnitus, vertigo and hyperacusis, in my case caused by a temporomandibular joint problem and amplified by anxiety, the simptoms have improved, especially those concerning hyperacusis. I can say that thanks to DAILY exercise and meditation, psychotherapy and rest, any sound that I previously experienced as unbearably threatening I now experience with absolute tranquility. I am unable to say whether this kind of training can help in every case of hyperacusis, but I would recommend trying a disciplined internal work. Be strong.

A big thanks for this.. I've had to tinnitus for 20 and I got entirely used to it. But recently I've been making my own music on a computer and i used headphones a lot but i keep the levels moderate but i don't know what level is safe and what isn't. Over the last two weeks I've been making a song and i kept kept thinking that if i keep listening to music at this level for years I might get tinnitus, but last night i realised my tinnitus was louder and i got really upset. My hearing hearing is obviously very delicate from past exposure to noise at rock concerts.i was so used to my tinnitus i could meditate in a quite room and not hear it, but today i found it intrusive. When i think about it my tinnitus did definitely fade over the years ago so hopefully it will fade again. Your videos, Julian, have definitely cheered me up. Thank you very much.

I, unfortunately, developed tinnitus, hyperacusis and vertigo after a covid booster jab. I could not believe that listening to a blackbird singing was giving me so much distress as I love birds so much. Eventually I found I could lisen to them again, I could wash up without needing to use plastic plates etc. I told myself that these noises are not going to harm me and that helped me get over it. I find that now just sometimes the sound of voices is painful, mainly womens with high pitch, not often though. So I would say that relaxing is the best way to help yourself. My tinnitus is still there and vertigo flares up occasionally but the tinnitus is on a much lower scale now and quite tolerable.

Thank you for your video, Julian. You seem to have a lot of experience on the subjects and I very much relate to the insights you share with us.
Exactly one year ago I experienced a SSHL (Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss) in my right ear, accompanied by a severe tinnitus. It was a dark night of the soul but I took the event as a chance to start listening (!) to what my body had to tell me.
In the meantime I was put on prednison, but combined it with vitamine supplements, a diet, reflexology techniques, meditation and grounding exercises, and succeeded to heal myself completely. The tinnitus is on a very acceptable level now but I still have hyperacusis. It teaches me a lot about my overall sensitivity and the way I process or don't process too much stimuli on many levels.
Keep up the good work! I think there are many among us that do support this.

@@blancacasillas8226 Hi, thanks for your reaction ;-) I am still fine! Hyperacusis is very low, but still quite sensitive to sounds. Tinnitus is on a very very low level, hardly noticeable. I still don't know how that is possible. I think it has a lot to do with stress. What helped me in my healing journey was to massage the inner ear acupressure point a few times a day. You can research the location. I found different results, I used the spot that is 'one finger' away/next to the ear lobe. But it seems there is another one on top of the ear.

About a year ago I was noticing that, when quiet (eg in bed or when meditating) I was easily startled by the slightest noise. I didnt think too much of it, chalking it up to another weird anxiety/stress symptom, but about 5 months ago I developed full blown hyperacusis (after a period of intense anxiety and eventually depression). It is now 50-75% better, partly in a sense of habituating to it but for sure the physical symptoms have overall lessened. I have good days and bad, but overall more and more better days, include some where I can go into a cafe or walk around the streets and I dont really notice it at all. For me, part and parcel of the hyperacusis was the depression, derealization and overall hyperactivated nervous system.
Everyone is different but what seemed to work was using pink/white noise (ear buds or headphones) and ear plugs at first... but gradually weaning off of these. Now I hardly ever use ear plugs, except when I know it may be very loud. Psychotherapy, antidepressants, exercise, progressive muscle relaxation. meditation and cranio-sacral therapy were all also part of the mix and remain so. As Julian says...any type of body-based work. I also would just "plow through" with watching videos. It was interesting that if I listened to music on headphones when tired or down-regulated, it was very harsh and painful. But if I listened whilst walking or on the exercise bike etc. (or in a good mood) it wasn't really an issue. Seems the symptoms would be very much related to other factors like energy and activation of my body. This is still the case at times.
I am extremely grateful to you Julian for your encouragement, wisdom and advice. While your app focuses mostly on tinnitus (which I also developed but only minorly and it was the first to calm down), there is a lot of value for hyperacusis sufferers too. I especially appreciate your advice to stay away from negative groups or any types of negative thinking, where people are really struggling and may even say that there is "no cure" etc. Perhaps there is no cure, but in my case at least its a mind-body thing, just way too active a nervous system especially above the neck :) So there is no purely physical or "structural" problem to begin with i.e. no "cure" is needed. Not at all saying its all in my or your heads folks! The symptoms are real and awful. Just to say there is definitely hope and staying positive can be your best medicine. Stay patient and take care.

I wonder if adrenal fatigue could affect the ears this way, Ive done coffee enemas for 9yrs daily almost and stopped recently and this weekstarted doing them, stopped for the last two days and wont do them again, but they say they re hard on the adrenals, seeing as I suffer from anxiety I should be doing them anyway just did them to detox and yes they become addictive, it makes sense what you say about calming your system down, wise words.

I think Hyperacusis is strongly related to TMJ, and TMJ is strongly related to tinnitus. Biting down in your sleep, grinding your jaws, day in and day out, over the years, if you haven't developed ways of dealing with the stress, catches up. The Tinnitus is the end result of overworked ear muscles maybe?

Hi Julian, im following your videos for quiet a while now. Your approach of dealing with T and H gives me a lot of hope. I’m 22 years old and have been dealing with tinnitus for 8 years. Three years I got hyperacusis. Because of this video I started some cranial work, because I didn’t feel any chances I stopped after 5 sessions. I know it is all about getting your nervous system down and maybe there is something else than cranial work that is better for me or I just need to find a better cranial therapist. I wanted to ask u how long you’ve been dealing with Hyperacusis? I believe as mine has been here for three years, only in one ear, it has become chronic. I just hope, that one day I find a way to calm my nervous system down like you have done. My T and H get worse every year. Your videos give me hope, thank you.

Thank you for your amazing videos. I have a question. I have been dealing with chronic anxiety, depersonalization and depression for many years, with many mind-body "physical" manifestations of the over-sensitized nervous system...and more recently have also developed hyperacusis (yeah..). No tinnitus, at least not in a significant way. I'm working on calming my nervous system and working with a psychotherapist on emotional awareness and CBT aimed to address the hyper-focus on symptoms. My question is whether use of "white noise" generators are helpful too (as I found some testimonials that it has helped). I realize its not a "structural" problem, I get it, but maybe the white noise can also help with de-sensitizing over time. Just wondering what you think about this... Thank you and much gratitude for your very useful videos. even though they are mostly aimed at tinnitus, I think it is very similar and helpful too with hyperacusis pain.

Using sound to help can be useful but eventually we need to normalise our lives. Watching a good film or listening to a good audiobook or radio station can be much better because if you are interested then this will help your hearing focus. Instead of listening to your ears, you are listening to something interesting out there which is good for your hearing.

    • @casario2808

@@JulianCowanHill Thank you :) Indeed I am using white noise (actually "pink noise") at the moment for a couple hours of the day but also listening to music and movies etc at safe levels. As I am kinda in the "freeze" mode now I find the low background noise (with good headphones) helps minimize the worst of the "startled pain" response but also recognizing the need to normalize once I have down-regulated a bit out of this current mode. I have the Quicken app now and see that almost all of the techniques (eg body awareness) are relevant to hyperacusis too. Plus the physcohtherapy (incl. EMDR) and Qi Jong and exercise and other self-care mlike mindful self-compassion. Thanks again for supporting me taking a positive attitude. I'm not sure really what to work on first - depersonalization or deeper traumas - but I'm not sure it matters as long as I'm engaging in processing this all and in doing so down-regulating the nervous system. Cheers

Good luck with finding a CST. Please can you do the evening face massage on my app in level one techniques: www.quietenapp.com Remember that the face and jaw are directly linked to the auditory system, so if you practice calming self-soothing in this area it can help bring down the hypersensitivity and reactivity of your hyperacusis. Also overall settling of the nervous system in a gentle yoga session can help this calm over time too. You can find CSTs here by the way; www.craniosacraltherapy.org/practitioner-search

Yes. Sounds like you are temporarily stuck in freezing response or overwhelm. Cranial work or body-based therapy work may help you come out of this. If you are interested you could read Peter Levine's book "Waking The Tiger" which is all about healing trauma and what happens when we come out of freezing response and fight or flight. When you process this and feel safe and settled again all this reactivity can calm down. Best wishes Julian

Where does "Reactive Tinnitus" fall into all of this. Is it just a result of Hyperacusis? If Hyperacusis backs off, will Tinnitus become less reactive at the same time? I don't feel physical pain from sounds, but certain sounds make my T react and raise in volume instantly. For example, rain, white noise, running water, ice machines, driving a car, bacon on a frying pan. Basically anything that used to mask my tinnitus is now a trigger. Sudden sounds like a fork falling on the ground does make me jump out of my skin. But it does not cause me physical pain.

Physical problems a common triggers for tinnitus. But the tinnitus itself is a neuronal condition. You could think of it like an activation that is still cycling in your system. This can be settled in my experience. I still recommend craniosacral therapy. You can find a local practioner here:
      www.cst.eu.com
      or

Thank you so much for this Video Julian.. now if anyone were to ask I can have you explain thru this video, how it helps is that when I have explained this to family they just judge me a fool. So now they except this thing called Hyperacusis or they continue without thinking. Peace.

Dear Tin Man, thanks for your feedback. Its hard when other people just add to suffering instead of helping. Having been through years of hyperacusis I know what you are going through. Saying someone is a fool because they are suffering is a really interesting reaction. What's going on there? If they broke their leg and you starting calling them a fool wouldn't that be a bit strange, to put it lightly? Are they saying, we have no time for you. You need to be well and tend to us. How dare you be a burden? Or are they saying, we cannot cope with your suffering. We will pretend it doesn't exist and call you an fool? Whatever is happening (I'm curious!) please look after yourself and protect yourself from this negativity. It may be helpful to find some compassionate people who are caring and concerned for your well-being, instead of snuffing you out like an irritation! Good luck to you. Warm regards Julian

Please someone help suddenly I woke up yesterday and couldnt stand the vibrations of my own voice, kids were shutting doors which sounds like loud slamming, my left ear is super sensitive, any small sound is amplified, the scooterthat just passed our home felt as though it just passed through my head, I went to the hospital and after checking to see the doc said it seems like Hyperacusis the causes could be Tinnitus, hearing loss where the brain compensates by making the other ear more sensitive, damage to ear or brain, migraines, Menieres disease, Bells palsy, depression/PTSD, Addisons disease (kidney), Brain disorders such as williams syndrome or autism.
I dont think I have any of these although I was given Paxil (anti depressant) 22yrs ago for a throbbing in the left ear (and pins and needes on the left side of my head)due to massive stress I was going through, recently tapered down to 2.5ml (5mg) Ive been tapering down from 15mg a few yrs ago to this dose, Ive experienced much more stress anxiety and depression and proceeded to 'ride' the symptoms and stop taking the drug, I wonder if Ive blown a fuse literally.
The doc said you may have to learn to live with it, first see an Ear Nose Throat specialist and Audiology to see what they say.
Ive said to my wife over the past year that I cant take the stresses that Im under (reducing the meds, looking after dad who has severe arthritis in the knees and dementia and puts me down, 3 kids and regularly they have tantrums and shriek which makes me leave the room or cover my ears) I said I need to be alone away from all this my health is suffering, and now maybe my brain/ear has had enough, maybe I do need to get away and have some peace and quiet.
Please guys any advise will be very much appreciated, how do you guys deal with this? Ive only had this two days and think if I cant stop this Ill go nuts.

    • @JulianCowanHill

Yes. When we become anxious or stressed or fearful our nervous system becomes more sensitive which means feeling aches and pains more and experiencing the senses and thinking going bananas for a while!

Yes definitely. When we get stressed out thoughts start racing and tend to dominate more. This is normal. When this happens we need strong distractions and calming practices to settle down again.

  • @Hew.Jarsol

If you have Hyperacusis some people say always protect your ears at all costs and don't ever use sound therapy.
Others say use sound therapy (pink noise) but don't over use ear protection for normal day sounds/activities as it becomes more sensitive... Obviously in loud places use protection. What do we do? Example being here..:
"Wearing hearing protection making hyperacusis worse is a bullshit lie made up by TRT enthusiasts. You absolutely MUST protect your ears and be in silence to recover. Sound therapy makes hyperacusis worse. STOP doing sound therapy, PROTECT your ears as much as possible, AVOID loud environments at all costs, and most importantly give yourself time. The reason your hyperacusis is getting worse is because you aren't protecting enough".

I think that if the hyperacusis is from a stressed out state and its not a "structural" issue then maybe some merit in the idea of not over-using protection for everyday sounds, and using pink noise in combo with the various ways of down-regulating the nervous system. I'm no expert but the info I have found seems to suggest that some kind of (careful)) exposure is helpful, since its not the sound itself but how we are processing it. I've find very little (compelling) evidence to suggest over-protection is the way. But obviously, avoiding loud environments (which is kinda good advice for anyone). Mine's getting a little better via calming work (massage, meditation, exercise) and using pink noise, as well as progressively exposing myself (eg listening to music at moderate levels). Once my mental state feels better, and I stop "looking for it" as much, this seems to reduce the hyperacusis.
