Apologies for stating at the start it was a 79, it was in fact a 1978 F350. Ford did not offer a 4x4 F350 in 78, so John Wayne did in fact order the top dog for 1978. Love them colors!
Very cool. My Dad had a 78 F250 4x4 with the same color scheme, also a super cab. It had the full chrome grill and from what I can tell now was pretty much fully loaded. It had a 400 with a one ton front axle. I learned to drive in it and took my driver's license test in it. It was a great truck. I wish I had it now....
Wow😊 this is the coolest truck iv seen in 24' thank you for your detail and effort to show us a great truck that all john Wayne fans didnt even know existed, 👍
I saw the truck on display at the F100 Supernationals in Sevierville,Tennessee in September 2021at the Sevierville Convention Center. It was a very nice truck
Never knew John Wayne had to pick up truck. I wouldn't be surprised to Ford did add a lot of that stuff. John Wayne was known to have big GM wagons and they would do all sorts of custom things to it for him from the factory.
I’ve had a few of the 78 & 79 Ford trucks beginning with my first vehicle, a 78 Bronco, since 1984. One was a 78 Lariat F-150 4x4 I bought in 1985 with 49,000 miles. Black with red/white Lariat interior. A couple of things you left out regarding the Lariat package; They also had courtesy lights under the dash at the kick panel that illuminated the floor when you open the door. There was indeed one level of trim higher than this example, which was the bright aluminum rocker panel trim with black accent. My Lariat had that option. Only the Lariat offered both this and the narrow body contour side trim that outlined the two-tone paint. Regarding the comment about power windows - they were not an option on Ford trucks in 78. However, Bronco with XLT package offered the rear power window option. Duke was a great American who knew great American trucks!
In 1978 the Headlights were changed from round to square mid model year by Ford. So, early 1978’s had round headlights, late 1978’s had square headlights, which continued for the 1979 model!
The 78 Custom was the only truck that has the round headlights. In 78 the Ranger Trio , which encompasses Ranger, , Ranger XLT, and Ranger Lariat all had the rectangular headlights in 78 , so it wasn’t a mid year change, it was based on the trim package that you chose for your truck. 79 was the year that EVERYTHING has the rectangular headlights.
@@joeslys3313 Joe's comment here is the correct one. I have had two completely un touched 78s, one a custom and one a ranger, the custom was round and the ranger was square. It had nothing to do with the production date
To bad The Duke never had a chance to own this truck very long. He would have already been pretty ill and weak from the cancer when it was delivered and died the next year.
A True 78' would have round headlamps. However, being the high trim package...dictates the square headlamps. Very well optioned truck. The dana 70 was only available in the super camper special, or cab@chassis models.
Rangers all had square lights in 78. The Dana 70 was also available in some other select 2wd models as well. We have pulled them out of supercabs as well.
John Wayne did not have a chance to drive the truck very often, since he passed away from lung cancer the following year in 1979, while his final movie " The Shootist" was still in distribution.
I enjoy your channel and was wondering if you ever work on other peoples Ford trucks. I have a 1974 F- 250 Ranger 4X4 and I'm having a hard time finding help finishing it.

Gee, John didn't want power windows,,,, I would think that would be standard on a Lariat, I bet he didn't put many miles on it.......... Something thats interesting to me is, about 20 + years ago on old trucks, 16" wheels was the norm, now they all have the lot more $$$$ 20" + wheels /tires on pickups. I dont see the need for 20" tires, it's probably a tire conspiracy for people to spend more $$$$$$$$ on big tires.........

One other correction, I meant to say Trailer Special not Camper Special
That's a 79 grill 78 had round lights and 79 did not have round lights
@@joesilvia4104 Thats not actually correct, Rangers in 78 also had square headlights. Only the customs had round ones in 78, so it is correct
So he only had it a year before he died in 79?
The U9000 was a requirement in Utah at one time. You were required to put the GVW on the side of your pickup truck.
I was hoping someone would know what that meant! Thanks for the info.
It's the same in Alberta, Canada if a truck is for commercial use. It must have the GVWR and the tare weight on the sides.
@@HighSierra1500 Good to know! I actually have a cab from Arizona with that on the side, but never made the connection
Lol think you was gonna post that DOT numbers haha that is something young people don't understand unless it's on a big truck

Quite common in some areas of the country.
The "aftermarket cup holders" are the infamous! Bar Buoy! 2-axis, swinging, Budweiser-tall-can beer holders! Come on, man!

You would think that with the 460, a towing package, air conditioning and being a camper special that it would also have had a cross flow radiator.
It also had an ashtray that could hold 3 packs of camels, a day's smoking for John Wayne.
