Just installed a backup camera on my 2008 c300 your video was perfect. Left hand drive so i ran cable behind glove box. Used a heavy duty cable tie to snake wire. I am also I retired engineer I think your videos are great. Thanks for sharing.

I was about to (potentially) ruin my c-class by using dashboard tool to pry out vents from sides. Glad you showed the hook tool here (ordered) so that I reduce chances of damage. Thanks Scott!!!
Thanks For the video Scott, your a legend ... just fitted the camera today, no real issues, I followed your instructions to the letter (I even used some silicone spray on the parts that you said) the eBayer that I used told me that I didn't need a FAKRA cable with the kit I bought, but I called his bluff and bought a female FAKRA to RCA anyway for £2.69 delivered, good job I did because there wasn't one in the kit, if I hadn't watched your video I would never have known ... My next project for my W204 2010 is some DRL like the facelift W204 to replace my fog lights, looks simple enough, anyway thanks again :)

Thanks Scott, I was very pleased to find this video and grateful for the trouble you took the to show this procedure. It was well described and informative, with good use of camera. I have an annoying rattle coming from behind Command unit and need to investigate its origin from within the dashboard. My Mercedes dealer would charge a minimum of 2 hours work to investigate with no certainty of a fix, so your video is really appreciated.

Hey thanks for the information Scott. After looking very carefully, I finally spotted the 10 fuse I missed previously. A quick change it wa fixed.
The only other difficulty I had was using the hook tool I made out of a hanger. I pulled as had as I dared, but the top part of the counsel wouldn't budge. In fact the hooks began to straighten. Maybe our hangers in America aren't as strong as yours in Australia 😂. I end end up using another flat 1 inch wide tool that did the trick. Thank you again for sharing; you were a big help.

Well done John ... you pass "Problem Solving 101". It's interesting you need the inline suppressor in the power line. Mine is just connected directly and I have no problems. Maybe the suppressor on the video cable is achieving the same thing. It's good information for others if they have similar problems so thanks for sharing. Us MB owners must look after each other!

Can you see where that aux cable goes? Is it part of the multimedia cable set that go into the glove box?. As that's an aux input for a video feed you can play a video from another source on your screen by selecting the aux on the menu. So I guess it's trying to work out where it's going at the moment. It would still be worth unplugging it and putting the camera feed in to see if you can get it all going properly. Scott
Thanks again Scott, I was also thinking it must be possible to feed the camera feed via the Multimedia Interface, rather than directly into the back of the Comand APS. Currently I'm in process of feeding the camera lead through the cabin into to the dash
John if the camera is getting it's power from the rear fuse box at pin 71 then the red cable should not be needed. All you need is to send the video signal from the camera to the HU. I'd disconnect the red wire completely at both ends and just pretend it's not there. Yes we are entering spring and I had fantastic weather yesterday at the local race track for a track day on my Honda.

Hi John that must be very annoying. Check you have a good earth connection.
The cable I have has an electromagnetic suppression sleeve over the end just before it connects to the short adapter cable. I can't recall if I put it on or if it was already there.You can see it in the video at about the 7.53 point. You can buy them at electronic shops for a few dollars. That may be your problem. There's a lot of electronics behind the dash on a Mercedes that would generate a lot of interference.
I appreciate your kind comments and I hope you find that annoying rattle. When I've ever had a problem like that the only way to solve it was to to work through the possibilities myself. I'm afraid I've lost faith in the dealers.
I had a intermittent rattle and the dealer tried to tell me it was the sunroof and they wanted to remove the whole unit and reinstall. I didn't believe them. I solved the problem myself. It was a lose bolt at the rear holding a brake line! It took 30 seconds to fix.
It saved a lot of messing about thankyou so much

Hi Scott, Thanks, You have rightly identified that my car is fitted with a Multimedia Interface in the Glove box and therefore the cable in the Auxiliary must therefore be connected to it. The next issue is, do I sacrifice loss of interface to get Camera image or is it possible to utilise the interface to get both? You've of great help as now I can feed the camera lead to the dash. A task I postponed in hope of it being pre-wired for reverse camera. Then I'll be able to connect camera lead..

Mine didn't have any fakra cable installed. Yours may have a multi media cable. You can buy a splitter on eBay.
@@ScottElliott152 and the power cables coming from the yellow RCA connections theres one on each side of the RCA do you need to connect those or just the power cables for the camera ? theres pps and neg for the camera and then theres 2 other red cables right next to the RCA plug on each side ... do these need to be connected if theres already power to the camera via a 12v switched power
Just connect the camera to the switched power source. The HU just needs the video signal from the camera. Those power cables are to power a screen if your car doesn't have one.

Hello, great video! In fact all of your videos are extremely helpful. Just purchased the same camera and fakra adapter. The RCA cable that runs from the camera to the HU has a red detector lead. Is that lead needed/used for this install? Thanks
Nelson Gomez Nelson you won't need to use that red lead. I think that's to provide power for a separate screen. You only need to get the video signal to the HU. Scott

Hello Scott , my husband installed a back up camera about 1 year ago, it is working great and the car gets an error code "check licence plate light" at night or in the garage. Also now I get a error code check side marker lights in the same dark environment. My husband changed the side marker bulb and check the voltage is 12 v. 2008 c350 it still does not work. Any advise?

I have w204 2007 too, with audio20, no MMI, and in the menu it has aux option,but there is no aux in glove box. I will look also for that hidden option on the upper side of the glove box.
@M MT how did you managed this in the end?
@@milosmars I managed to get AUX as I have it plug, but in your case sounds like you need to instal AUX adaptor for your car, which is not hard and can be done by your self.

Definitely replace with an aftermarket navigation/dvd touchscreen unit. They have reverse camera input. I'm thinking of getting one of these.

My NTG4.0 COMAND has the amplifier within the head unit. I suspect yours will be the same.
Brilliant video mate...Just bought myself a "Parksafe" camera and will do the install soon (bought a 2007 C200 2 weeks ago)... I have one question regarding your dash surround. In the video I noticed the plastic that is around the knob to the right of the air vent(instrument cluster intensity) is coming adrift- ie it's not flush...have you managed to work out how to get it to stay flush? Hi Ben and thanks for the kind words. You have a keen eye to notice that! One of the clips holding it in was broken hence that LH end wasn't being held in place properly. I confess 'twas me who broke it. After a while it was annoying me so I pulled the instrument cluster surround off again and repaired the clip by making a new one and plastic welding into place with a soldering iron. I think it's ABS plastic. You'll know because once off you'll see stamped on the back somewhere.
Sounds like you may have the same issue. If you pull that surround off you'll see how it's clipped into place. I bet someone has had it off before and broke the LH clip. Regards, Scott

Hi Scott - Thanks to you, I managed today to remove my Command ASP unit without difficulty. However, my car differed very slightly from yours, in that it had black nylon (plastic) slots into which the unit fitted and also nylon locking tabs. This may obviate the need to apply silicon on re-assembly. I revealed that my unit already had a cable and socket fitted in the green encasement where you fitted your video camera cable, so I'm hoping that my car may be pre-wired for reverse camera. Thanx
I think you can run both. You need a "double adapter" so to speak. If I was you I'd get the appropriate adapters to have the AUX cable in the multimedia panel and the camera feed both connected to the AUX input. Once you've been into the Engineering mode and told the system you have the the reverse camera it will only send the aux feed to the screen when you select reverse.
The rear camera is only sending a feed when the ignition is on anyway. The HU won't display video when the car's moving.
This is a great video. I might have to remove my command unit in order to access a blown fuse. I previously checked all my fuses in the boot and under the hood with a fuse tester. They all tested good. Someone told me that there is a fuse behind the radio in the command unit. Do you know if this is true before I remove my command system. Thank you for sharing.
Dwayne there maybe a fuse in the head unit but honestly I can't recall. It's so quick and easy to remove you may as well get the practice.

I'm replacing a broken engine mount on my C320CDI today. I feel another video coming on!
600Nm of twist on the engine had the LHS engine mount screaming enough. It broke after fitting the LSD. So much traction put extra pressure on the LHS rubber mount.
I believe I have a blown fuse as well. My radio isn't working but also the screen doesn't come out of the dash. Did your screen come out of the dash?
Thanks Dwayne ... if my memory is good there's a fuse in the back of the COMAND head unit. It's quick and simple to remove so you may as well do it for the practice!
Hi Scott.
The cable that runs from the camera and connects to the adapter cable which attaches to the NAV unit has an additional red wire at both ends of it. I couldn't figure out what this red wire was for so I grounded them at both ends but this didn't get rid of the interference. Is this significant?
I will look for a electromagnetic suppression sleeve and try it to see what happens. I will keep you posted .Have a great spring day (we are beginning fall here in Canada).

Thanks Navid. The NTSC camera is the one to get. I don't think the command needs an update. It appears the later models dropped the list of optional cameras. It makes no difference on my car which one I select.

I successfully installed my backup camera using you videos to guide me through the process. I am getting a lot of interference and the NAV unit flickers once the engines starts or is revved or any electronic units are operated.

I today was able to remove my tailgate trim successfully without causing damage. So I have now installed the camera and fed the wiring 'as per' your video. However, I discover that I already have a plug going into the Auxiliary input in ASU Comand unit. I've outlined my concerns on MBWorld relating to installing OEM camera on a W204 and submitted a photo. I couldn't find a similar lead in the tailgate, assuming it been pre-wired. Any ideas mate?

+Reinier Kraan The camera draws very little power. Start with a 5A. You can always go to 7.5A if required. However if connect to the existing fuse 71 that fuse will be protecting the camera anyway.
Realy great video ! thank you for your help, but mine E250 2010 comand has a few aux conections I dont know witch I should connect the FAKRA cable to. I have doble pink, double green and double brown aux entrances... can you help?
+Andre M It shouldl be one of the green sockets. Try one and if that doesn't work swap it to the other. It's easy to do as you can fire up the system without having the head unit fully installed.

Lovely work. My 2013 C200 has a different LCD and different menu system which has no option to activate a camera. The screen is recessed into the dash.
Do you know of any other tricks for this?

If you do some searching on the W204 forum you're sure to find some information. There's quite a bit on reverse cameras. I have a feeling all you need to do is plug it in as if I recall correctly the later models have two AUX video inputs on the back of the HU and one is specifically for a back up camera.

I have a question is there a fuse to make the nav center light up at night I have been trying to figure it out for months I don’t know how to get it to light up at night. I have a 2008 Benz c class
I only know of the general dash lighting fuse in one of the fuse boxes. I don't know about a separate item for the nav centre. You could always take the head unit out and investigate. It's the only way to learn about these cars.

The NTG4 is old technology and is driving me nuts. As soon as the Chinese make a replacement Android system I'm getting one.

I'd recommend to stay away from factory navigation like the COMAND. It's outdated now and is so painful to update the maps. Retrofitting is never easy but can be done.
There are some great aftermarket units with all the bells & whistles for about $700. They're plug and play and compatible with the Mercedes CAN. They use commonly available map software and are touchscreen.
Open an account with Aliexpress.
I'm thinking of ditching my COMAND for one of these aftermarket units.

Do some searching as there are many different types. according to members of benzworld.org these units are simple to fit and work well. All who've fitted this type of touchscreen unit are very pleased with them.

Early in the new year I have to change the brake fluid so I'll be fitting stainless steel braided brake lines. i thought that would be a good video subject. Scott, My C 280 has the green Fakra cable plugged in. Did you just remove this and replace it with the Chinese one with the RCA connector? I am wondering where the original one goes to and what it does. I dont have any rear video screens or anything fancy but Im in the process of installing a rear view camera. Like you, I service all my cars as Im a retired tech and dont trust anyone else.
I also just checked my R/R lamp earth and it was starting to burn to Ive done the bypass. I wonder if these faults will get a recall here in NZ.

Thanks Graham. At least orthopedic surgery is very good nowadays! If you have a FAKRA connection already in place it's probably multi media cables going to the glove box. With the NTG4 COMAND you can't have an aux video and reverse camera ... tis one or the other.
They've not done a recall in Oz for the tail light earth problem. Very poor form by MB.

It sounds like you don't have the COMAND system with navigation. If that's the case this method is not suitable as you have no provision for a reverse camera. Regards, Scott

I had the same experience. The dealer wasn't interested in helping at all. I had to take control myself.

i haven't done it but once the head unit is out you'd have to pull it apart. Same as a computer I guess.

I have no sound but the radio turns on and everything works but no sound. Are there separate modules or is it all in the command center?
It's all in the COMAND head unit.
I'm still in pursuit of the annoying vibration inside the dashboard and having removed the (top) 2 x torx screws of the 'flip-screen' assembly I was able to loosen it, however it still remained firmly in place, even applying moderate force to extract it. The assembly feels like its held from somewhere within the dashboard, but as yet can't see what's holding it. I'm reluctant to use too much force. Any suggestions? - the 'battle of the rattle' continues.

I have found out that when you remove the unit like you have showed and refit the hard drive function for the cd is lost. It may be different because its a C250 from Japan . Swopping over another one form a donor car doesn't help either. Are they coded in some way to work? Cheers Carl
Hi Carl ... haven't encountered that issue before. I haven't ever unplugged the Comand only pulled it out to plug the camera into the AUX input. I'd check the Engineering Menu settings again to make sure your setting are right. I'll have a look on mine today and see if I can find anything. Scott

That is the factory head unit for the upgraded high end sound system. You'd have to get one from a breaking yard. It's a difficult job to retro fit. The unit is very out of date and I wouldn't recommend it. You're better off to buy a plug and play touch screen after market head unit from Aliexpress or eBay. Search W204 gps in car multi media players.

Dillion I don't quite understand your question. You'll need a reverse camera to give the video signal

Ok understand. There's no factory AV output on the NTG4 but you can buy aftermarket black boxes to plug and play to give you output connectors for other screens like head rests.

MultiAdriansen When you take it out I can only see one on the back. If you access Engineering Mode you can peruse the various menus. To do that hold down the telephone hang up button, the 1 and the # simultaneously for 6 seconds and you will get Engineering Mode. Use the scrolling wheel on the console to navigate around to see what's on offer. There's a compass you can activate and also activate off road mode and it will plot new roads or off road tracks. Personally I'd fit an after market non OEM system. The W204 COMAND is very old technology now.

@@ScottElliott152 really late but your can splice into the rear speakers with an rca converter. and run a wire to one of the fuses in the rear fuse box in the trunk for the remote wire.

May not be as silly as it sounds. My wife's C280 has an intermittent issue with static/loss of functionality in the Command system that started a few years ago as static in the driver's door speaker (only) and progressed. It plugs into the back of the head unit. So you need to remove it as described in the video.

Sounds like the CAN controller. You may need to have it plugged into the DAS/Xentry system to read any fault codes. Before you do that disconnect the battery for ten minutes or so.

The controller for the CAN is but it will cost a small fortune.

I found releasing the FAKRA plug from back of APS Comand somewhat difficult, I'm assuming its retained by a hidden clip. So have decided to run the camera off MBz multimedia Interface. I have a 4 pin 3.5mm Aux (female) Jack plug that's part of the kit provided with MMI and with the help of 'Banjo' from MB World, in Canada, located a Jack plug to 3 x RCA adapters (Item: 180730096983) on Ebay from China that should provide the connectivity I need for both Camera and iPod function.
