I've done a couple of rock-carving videos before, but this time I spend a bit longer and go into more detail, using a better camera than I had available last time.
Old school fan 75 years old still building layouts your rock carving video was amazing I enjoy all your videos. Thanks for making the hobby more enjoyable
Doing reruns Peter. Love this video on how you carve rock faces. Very illustrative and educational. Like how you include the ‘waiting time’ for the plaster to set up. Think that’s where most people go awry with their plaster. With plaster, patience is indeed a virtue. The way you indeed go about breaking up the entire smooth surface is indeed kind of the trick for creating a realistic rock face. Thanks 🙏 for sharing!
Luv your video and I am going to attempt to copy your technique. However, I have one question - “”What was the base of your mountain?” That is, what’s under the plaster cloth? Thanks
Great video, it's been very helpful. You make it look so easy but I've tried 4 times already and still doesn't look much like rocks. I have much better luck with castings so far...
If it makes you feel any better, my first few attempts didn't look all that great either. Just keep trying different techniques until you find the one that works for you, then build on that one.
looks good but instead of spraying the plaster before hand with water to break the suction and increase the bond then its better to paint the plaster with a diluted pva mix. This will break the suction completely ans if the top coat of plaster is put on before the pva totally dry you will have an even better bond
That's impressive. You make it look easy but I'm sure it took a bit to get to that comfort level. Great point and tips about natural vs cut rock looks. How did you go about building up the mountain shapes? Eps foam or wire then the plaster cloth?
I've never tried it. I can't imagine that the paint will make any difference but once the plaster has fully set it will be as hard as rock. You may be able to do it with a hammer and chisel but it might break differently. Good luck.
You are a master of carving rock
