At the beginning of the game I'm trying to reduce the amount of time my trucks assigned to excavators spend driving around dumping dirt/rocks. What I would like them to do is dump the dirt/rocks into loose storage buildings near the mining site, and then for unassigned trucks to empty those storages. I've run into a few problems with the solutions I've tried: 1. If I set up one loose storage with a fill-to priority, the trucks will go there and dump, but they do not empty it. 2. If I set up one loose storage without any fill or empty priorities, the trucks will prioritise other storages. Since it is early game, that means the trucks carrying dirt will drive all the way over to my brick making area. Obviously I will eventually not need bricks, but then the trucks carrying rocks will drive over to any loose storages feeding crushers making gravel. 3. If I set up two loose storages, with one connected to the second via conveyor (or directly), set the first with a fill-to priority, and set the second with an empty-to priority, it can sometimes result in trucks taking things from the second and filling the first. That obviously means the materials immediately go into the second storage, and a truck will then be assigned to empty it and deliver it to the first. What setup can I use to make sure that the trucks assigned to the mining tower dump non-ore materials nearby, and trucks unassigned to any tasks will pick up from the nearby dump and move it to where its needed?
I've always used the 3rd solution you mention indeed BUT you need a place for them to dump which is prioritised so that they go there instead of back to the first It also gets a lot easier when you get the research later on where you can limit which storage are linked to which because then you can link your 2nd storage only to the final destination and they will never be able to deliver back into the first I also have a let's play series and if you look at the later part of the episodes, you should be able to see me do it live Hope that helps!
There are no good early game solution other than building stuff close to each other. You need the advanced logistics research for that. You can get by with belts but it can be expensive early on.
Excellent tips. The game is challenging. It requires knowing its mechanics and what functions each element fulfills. It has not been easy for me to find precise information (the general one is intuited) and I am glad to have found your tutorials.

I've already started digging in the 2nd (farther from the shipyard) iron and coal deposits on the "beginner" map and I haven't set up coal/iron imports from Cargo ships. Should I try to do it ASAP or am I pretty much dead already? :D
V1 is supposed to come soon so who knows :) but more seriously definitely an amazing game in my opinion, I will definitely do another let's play on the channel for it soon

You're not dead but definitely go for cargo asap and also try to reduce your consumption - for example with recycling :) good luck!
