  • Today I dive into making LARP arrowheads out of foam. I try 2 different methods of making these LARP safe arrows, one the standard way and the other one of my own creation. Let me know what you think in the comments below. Also, if you know of a good LARP I should attend, leave that below as well!

    I use bronze arrowheads at my LARP events since bronze is much softer than steel. No one I’ve shot has complained yet. In fact the members of my LARP group are so committed they don’t say anything when hit, they just lay down and pretend to be dead. Some of them are so committed they’re still in the field weeks later.

    Great video, your injection molded ones turned out fantastic! They look a lot like the ones you can by online. It is important for anyone wanting to make their own that you check the rules of your larp. some larps don't allow you to bring home made arrows, because it's harder to verify quality control. Other larps allow you to bring your own, but may cut open one of your arrows to see how they are constructed so make sure to bring an extra! Also, try adding a bit of glow in the dark tape somewhere on the arrow, so they are easier to find in the dark!

    SO a thing to think about, is how they interact with eye sockets.
    The ones with rounded heads actually enter the eye socket and do not begin compression until in contact with the eyeball itself which can cause repairable damage to the eye. the ones that have a 2.5 inch head and are flat, cannot easily enter an eye socket, and compression starts on the bone not the eyeball.
    I understand headshots may not be allowed in your game but accidents happen and with arrows especially they should all be designed assuming the worst, because once released we have no control over them.

    So I really dig this video. Really glad i found someone making injection arrows. I used to work with FlexFoamIT in various durometers (squishynesses if you will) at a previous job that, funnily enough, made props for movies and such. I've got a few tips specifically with the FlexFoam. For one, with the lower durometer versions need to be VIOLENTLY stirred to get just the right amount of small bubbles. When i mean violently, I mean like either you beat it by hand like you're making a merengue in a hurry and the stuff in the cup owes you money or take like a drill paint mixer to the mix and go faster than that. I personally used the by hand method because it allows for faster pouring (which is definitely needed as this stuff reacts with the quickness) and it also allows you to more visually see if your stuff is reacting faster than normal. It's also a great arm workout if you're making a lot and stirring by hand (which I did. Literally made the stuff by the popcorn bucket with a paint stirrer). The FlexFoamIt 12 could also be used and, in theory, you can mix different parts A and B from different durometer kits to make sorta half-step durometers, as FlexFoamIt comes in weird increments. Also you saying that a vent hole is needed is a gross understatement. Of all the versions, FlexFoamIt under 20 reacts VERY very violently and can lead to some scary explosions (not specifically dangerous, but definitely scary as hell, especially if you have a hard mold with this "growing" inside). Another thing is ALWAYS MIX YOUR PARTS EQUALLY AND/OR BY THE PACKAGE DIRECTIONS. Otherwise you just get a nasty pseudo-melted marshmallow goo that sucks to get off stuff (especially arm hair and clothes, ask me how I know...). Always release your molds, even if you only ever plan to use them for a single casting, as getting the thing out of the mold is much harder without it. You can also use spray carnauba wax instead of Ease Release 200 as I believe it is cheaper, however you definitely need a respirator and be outside or in a well ventilated place when using that. The reason being is that it, over time, creates a layer of hard wax that, if you repeatedly use a mold, you will eventually need to scrape off and that happening in your lungs is NOT COOL. Think that's the long and short of my tips on the stuff. Keep making them vids.

    My main game doesn't require the super squishy foam on the tip from the first one, so when I make arrows, I generally just do three layers of the blue camp pad on the front. A quick way to cut a ton of 2.5" disks is to use a food can of the same diameter, remove the top and bottom, and you can basically hole punch the whole roll of foam in a few minutes. Also, instead of using pennies, I prefer a washer with a screw and some Lock Tite.

  • @meganjones9670
    @meganjones9670 Год назад +2

    The weaponsmiths at the LARP I played in actually have a trick for fast-cutting camp foam. They would take a can of food (corn, peas, dog food... I won't judge) and cut off one side. They then use a Dremel to sharpen the edge so it can cut. They would also cut a hole in the other side so the improvised punch would let air escape (and give them a way to push the camp foam circles back out). To make the process easier, they also cover the back of the tool with more camp foam so you don't hurt your palm pushing down on it.

  • @carlinemoon2484
    @carlinemoon2484 Год назад +4

    For the foam you also could use the giant hollow plastic hiding eggs from Easter, which you can pick up VERY cheap in after sales. Cut open the narrow end for your arrow shaft, and the wider end needs the little hole you mentioned.

    My larp has recently added these style to the rule books, but before we used light bulb tubes (T5) to make arrows. The head is made of the pipe foam insulation and squish foam for safety. They work really well.

    Great tutorial, I always love working with expanding foam method. It's better to go with the flattop bottle ones because the rounded ball ones suffer the same issue as the IDV arrows namely the bounce back. They have a tendency to hit well but bounce back a fair distance often spinning randomly. This means the fletching and nock could fling back into someone's eye e.t.c. The flat surface ones tend to bounce backless. Also, the penny on duct tape can shift over time so would stick with the bolt method.

  • @NiteMarcher
    @NiteMarcher 7 месяцев назад +1

    The bottle idea is great for certain LARPS (Bicolline for example) as they no longer allow rounded arrow tips, but only allow flat ended because sometimes the rounded arrows can still apply some pressure to the eyesocket.

  • @hollyingraham3980
    @hollyingraham3980 Год назад +1

    Super designs. You really will want to move a usable head off a shaft where a fletch has torn off, and you don't have time to repair it. So that was a good idea.
    Now, the 2.5" diameter rule is good, but never a ball head. If the whole thing is about avoiding injury, a whack in the eye with a tennis ball can do enough impact damage for you to lose your focused vision, permanently. Happened to my sister. Freak accident, but stick to flat front arrows, folks.

    This is pretty good for single builds. I had to build a few dozen for my community, so I had to industrialize. A hole saw kit works great for a variable size set of disks. That's how I do the rear, like the taper Clever makes. The hole saw pilot bit also keeps the stack centered on the shaft. Most readily available arrow shafts are pre-threaded. I use a #8 x 1" machine screw and fender washer to cap the shaft. Lock-tite the bolt for security. I add an additional pad with pilot hole on top to sit over the screw head. All of these pads are made from the black puzzle-edge mat from Harbor Freight. I add 3 layers of blue camp mat in top for better impact facing. Some/many groups do not allow couch foam as it is too soft. Everything gets assembled with 3M Super 77 spray glue, cured overnight, and sanded for smoothness. Wrap with athletic tape and a cover if your group requires. Most important is READ WHAT YOUR ORGANIZATION REQUIRES/ALLOWS!

    Great video as always. I'm totally new to Larp in general and I've never made any arrows before. But from what I'm told you want a flat top arrow head for two reason. First is that a dome can go deeper into your eye socket if its not wide enough and secondly as your video showed the roundness causes your arrow to spin when it hits so you run the risk of the fletching spinning around and hitting your eye. But other than that this is amazing and I really want to try these techniques.

  • @alexandermuller8587

    Just some general tips for the arrow shafts.
    At the same spine value thinner arrows get damaged less often than thicker ones. Thats because if you want the same spine value with a thicker arrow, the wall of the arrow is thinner making it break more easily. So yeah. Not really intuitive but I would advise to use 4.2mm shafts.
    The spine should fit to the acceleration the arrow is exposed to during release. Simply put the arrow should fit to the draw strength of the bow. Spine defines how much the arrow bends under pressure. Since these LARP arrowhead are very heavy the dynamic spine should be lower than the static one.
    So if your bow has maybe 30lbs@28“ and 1000 Spine arrows might be a good fit, for those LARP arrows you likely should choose a lower Spine. Maybe 900 or 800.
    Only if spine and draw strength fit together well, you arrow has any chance of flying straight. But since you shoot with arrows you find on the ground this point is somewhat moot I guess.

    Decades ago in Canada made boffer arrows. 3/4" rubber bird blunts from archery supply stores. Wooden arrow with fiber tape running lengthwise so if broken still holds together. Foam pipe insulation over the blunt. 35mm film canister over that making a 1 1/2' blunt. Another layer of foam pipe insulation over that. Layer of blue foam insulation capping the end. Glued to that 3" open cell foam such as from upholstery supplies. Finally grey duct tape cut in half in strips laid across top then running down sides to completely cover the whole thing. Punch small holes with a pin in the tape covering the tip so air can escape and the tip compresses freely. From a 30lb draw bow hits like being hit in a pillow fight. 3" open cell foam to give 2 1/2" of compression.

    The Larp rules in my area are pretty hard core like you literally can get hurt burses and "beatdowns" are kind of allowed but your encouraged to pull your punches and fights aren't allowed without "healers" present. After the fight you basically are also encouraged to help the other larpers regardless if they are your "clan" or not we do abide by fighting regulations too (one of the rulers is a old Ref and they do put heavy emphasis on safety) and we have actual armored combat groups that show up at events including Jousters. for anyone like OMG they use real weapons NO again safety is a big concern; depending on the "fight" depends on the rules but you will get roughed up down here so much so they banned archers for obvious reasons. This idea may be a game changer.
    Side notes to clarify, please keep in mind these are groups around area with big renaissance festivals almost year round. some of these groups do events at these places and the conventions as well. because of this some terms are different I will clarify the ""
    "Beatdown" -- while punches are pulled safety words/gestures are a thing people are encouraged to use them and there is a "No Shame" mentality about it. The battles here do get rather physical and there is a great deal of paling and cleanup for safety reasons so no one like Lands on a pile of broken glass. but they will literally throw you if they can and it is the ground so knowing the scale of the Beatdown you can expect to get for a loss is important when you join a group in this area. because of this padded armor is a standard here lol.
    "Healers" -- around here a person who has training in first Aid is called a Healer there are tiers of first aid knowledge ending at grand healer who are actual Doctors that larp.
    "Clans" -- these are subgroups example AmpGuard or armored Corps where you can do more specialized combat these groups are surprising professional about it.
    "Fights" depending on who you are with down here they can be actual fighting or movie level shenanigan's. There are refined LARP groups in my area that do events. Fight prep is a big deal the more professional groups may make you sign a contract when your with them (this in ref to the LARP group that does actual armored combat)there are certain hoops to jump through, yadda yadda the usual mostly for the safety of you and your fellow larders. most groups require you to have a Squireship to learn the ropes before you can indulge because we are pretty hard core here.

    I made my arrows this way:
    I got pre-tapped arrow shafts, figured out the thread size, got screws and quarter sized washers, and screwed on the washers. I then taped on one disk of camp pad onto the washer. I then bought a pack of foam softballs, made of open cell foam. I cut off a section of the ball so that it fitted flush onto the camp pad disk. I then taped the foam ball onto the camp pad and the arrow shaft. After that, I covered the tip assembly in fabric and used electrical tape to secure it onto the shaft.
    The safety officers commented that they were a little firm, but accepted them provided I got no complaints. I’ll probably use one of these designs next

    Haven't watched the whole video, but as an archer myself I would say that a carbon fibre arrow shaft is still very dangerous. They can break and when they do, they shatter. Splinters from a carbon fibre arrow are really dangerous as the body doesn't naturally reject them, you need to go to a hospital to get them out. I would recommend an aluminium shaft instead, they don't tend to break, instead just bending and are what many archers I know use as an alternative to carbon fibre or wooden arrows.

    • @RaggyGsy

      Yep, was scanning through the comments to find someone else thinking this!

      @@societyofrobots sure, but aluminium shafts are cheap as chips, especially compared to carbon fibre ones. We also dealt with bent arrows all the time, I get that it's a pain in the ass. I'm just thinking primarily from a safety standpoint, that aluminium arrows would be better.

    Love the way you definetly followed the safety rules to a T. Where you used the camping matt, i usually use a 2.5" pool noodle. shave the bottom into a cone so its easier to tape down and hold on to the shaft and not wobble. then the noodle sits flush with the penny on top. I then add the camping matt layer on top with either glue or tape. Then the last part for the top is just a stress ball (i get a pack of like 12 on amazon) and cut it in half and glue on top. Then of course cover the whole thing with what ever color fabric needed.

      @@ikatekeda6267 Using wooden arrows is better idea than using carbon fibre arrows because when carbon arrows break they shatter and you are left with super sharp splinters flying through air, mean while wooden ones break much harder and aren't as dangerous when broken. Also in Czech republic there are no metal parts allowed in arrow heads and rather than a penny we use 2cm diameter piece of wood with hole drilled into it for arrow to properly sit in.

  • @sadstrangelittleman0
    @sadstrangelittleman0 2 года назад

    Carbon fiber doesn't take tapping threads very well. The threads will weaken over time. The worry is that the arrowhead can snap off at a high stress moment, like a launch or an impact.
    Also, ball shaped arrowheads have resulted in damaged eyes. Bicolline in Quebec had banned round tips after a player suffered a ruptured eyeball resulting in permanent loss of sight.

    you MAD LAD lmao, the first arrow you made was ok but the second would be totally illegal in Amtgard (the larp that i play). the thing ive found with larp archery is that you want to keep the arrow heads light so that they fly better and you dont have to angle your bow as much to reach your desired target. using the blue foam was a good call but the duck tape and contact cement can be substituted by strapping tape holding everything together, use smaller strips of tape to hold the different blue foam sections together. I also use a smaller pipe to make my arrow heads modular and use 1/2in pipe insolation to pad the pipe and up to my penny then i hold it all down to the shaft by compression wrapping the foam with clear packing tape to the actual pipe. then its just a simple wrap job with electrical tape or clear tape again and im done

    • @SkillTree
      @SkillTree  2 года назад

      Great to know! Question. Would they be illegal just because you cant see what's inside of them? Because otherwise, the poured foam ones use no tape and needed less layers so ended up being even lighter then the first one I made. Would be lighter still if I didn't include the "modular" bits at all. I am new to this so any input would be appreciated 🙂

      @@SkillTree I believe most "Boffer" or "Full Contact" type larps require cloth covers on all projectiles. This would include the games of Dagorhir, Belegarth, Amtgard and Hearthlight. All of these are considered "full contact" LARPs.

      @@SkillTree im not entirely familiar with the poured foam but the platidip cover makes it illegal in Amtgard, you need to have a cloth cover and they should be fine. honestly that should be all you need to make them legal, i just know that some parks in amtgard can be picky about the foam used and the methods in which they are created.

    As someone who has done archery in a combat heavy LARP for about 5 years I only got 2 minutes in before noticing something that would immediately be problematic in most LARPs I have dealt with... you really want to build the head on a piece of PVC so that if you break a shaft you can remove the whole head and attach it to a new shaft, building directly on the shaft is a terrible idea that can come back to bite you in allot of LARPs
    EDIT: now that I have seen the whole video, I like the treaded bolt idea, not 100% on if that would pass in some games though and honestly unnecessary you can just do the pvc sleeve and be good, for the molded ones the plastidip would definitely fail safety check in the games I attend because the striking surface is required to have a cloth cover in allot of LARPs... (though not sure the specifics in some of the lighter combat latex weapon LARPs since they typically have stricter minimum distance rules and lower max draw weights)

    • @Lylacelixir
      @Lylacelixir 2 года назад

      a common ones I see for budget arrows at one of my LARPs is arrow heads made using a cut in half foam practice tennis ball for the soft foam on the top, the rest of the build made using puzzle-mat foam around a piece of PVC (with the penny cap on the PVC pipe). then we put tape around the shaft to make it more snug on the pvc and tape the whole thing to the shaft with a mix of duct tape and cloth tape
