DIY PVC pipe flute! LARP bone design. Will it actually work?

- Today I do over a simple DIY PVC pipe flute build. I styled this like a bone to have a "death calls" kind of vibe to it. I think this will be super fun for a LARP or cosplay character. Making a PVC flute is actually really simple and fun to do. You can do this DIY project with just a few hand tools and some dreams. I wonder how you will style YOUR DIY pvc flute. Make sure you send me pics of how you style your DIY PVC flute.

"You STAYED to the END SCREEN! I MUST play you the song of My People...

HAHAHAHAHA!
! laughed so loud my wife came into the room to see what was so funny.
Stay to the end, people. There is comedy gold there.
NEVER leave before the end of a of Cl3ver video!
So, I play the tin whistle and the flute, and one thing I think your viewers might want to know. If they make this flute, they need to do the warbla bone parts first, and then measure the holes, because you changed the length of the sound chamber when you added the bone parts. And that throws off the tuning. But other than that, awesome job.
Thank you.I appreciate comments with the benefit of long time experience. It's been years since I played flute or recorder (Idid own and was about to learn tin whistle before I stopped) I was seriously thinking about taking it all up again, and this video is a definite incentive.
P.s. Skill tree, pls see above comment with shared compliment.
Right as you say listen closely...a dump truck starts backing up outside my house... it's that my death song?
I would just avoid trash day all together were I you...
But... the chores must be done
Nice! What if you continued the death music theme and made a vertebrae ocarina? Or a fishbone fiddle? Or Skull-shaped drums? :)
You know, I AM thinking of making an ocarina... Hmmmmmm
@@SkillTree P.S. love your energy and friendly nature of your channel!
I like the way you said "Dirty Bone".
A PVC flute calculator? The internet really does have everything.
Ooh! My sister uses a pirate outfit for most ren faires, and she is a flute player, so I'm totally gonna make this for her! Amazing product again, Cl3ver!
That is AWESOME. Get some cool skull and crossbones action going on! ☠️
Ah! Look who's back!
Still traveling a lot this month but trying to get you all some good content when I can 😁
I want an updated video of you playing something on that awesome flute
really cool, I couldn't tell it was PVC until you mentioned it, really nice job.
Thanks, Bear! I appreciate you being here so consistently. It means a lot to me 😁
You make it easy; I love the projects you do; you give easy and fun to follow instructions. I like your channel so much it the first and only channel I have ever supported on patron. Keep up the great work. Thank you
My dad had a Fife. This build reminds me of that.
This is incredibly awesome as there were actual Viking and saxon flutes made from animal bones (commonly sheep or goat but there were also deer and swan bone flutes). The bones couldn’t be cooked otherwise they would be brittle and have oils that would make the bone rancid over time and so the bones had to be bare of any meat which is frankly… grim. Because the bones were small there were only 3 holes in the top. There’s a RUclips video about it with a demonstration and it’s absolutely beautiful in a weird sort of way.
Sounds like it would be a FUN project to try! I will look for that video!
Yeah, I’d love to see you try it or put a spin on it. The video I saw was called “Sheep Bone Flutes” by a really old channel called “KateCorwen”.
So, I am flute player myself and I love the idea of being an apothecary owner while also being that mysterious person with a hidden past. I’d probably have a plastic flute just to add character without using my real one.
A nice 3D printing project might be little plugs that can be plugged into a standard-sized drilled hole while reducing the actual open hole size appropriately. In other words, little stoppers with holes in the center. That way one could drill the holes all the same size in the perfect places along the pipe and plug in stoppers that make each open hole the correct size. This might also allow for alternate tuning schemes using the same pipe, perhaps with an adapter to push on an extender? I can see this going so many ways to make a more flexible and yet compact instrument. Alas, I don't own a 3D printer nor have the skills to design such items.
I have played multiple woodwinds in the past and still play concert flute and piccolo on occasion. I can see myself fooling around with this build. Thanks!
You're all alone, everyone you knew is dead and gone. Tomorrow is your birthday but you don't care, there's no one left to celebrate with you. Suddenly, you hear that familiar song on the wind, "Happy Birthday" seemingly played on a flute. You look out the window, there's only trees blowing in a light breeze. The doorbell rings out into the house. Through the peephole you see a figure cloaked in tattered black robes. The figure turns to face you with a ghastly visage, and that song you abhor is coming from the wind blowing through its ribcage! The door forcibly opens, the song abruptly stops as this... thing steps inside, the clockbell chimes midnight, this is it, the Reaper has come for you, the end is nigh... he's... handing you a cake. You and Death sit and chat for a bit, he gives his name, Azrael. As he departs, he lets you know all your old buddies wanted to wish you well, and he just couldn't say no. He tells you that he'll be back next year, then vanishes. You think to yourself, "Maybe Death isn't so bad after all." You proceed to come back from a near fatal stroke to find you've been in a hospital for three weeks, and that you were experiencing cardiac arrest for the past thirty minutes, exactly how long you sat talking with that deathly angel.
Just a tip I think it would’ve looked looked more realistic if the broken side of the bone was on the side the air comes out!
Okay this is amazing. I am legit making it.
I hope you share how it comes out!
You could make a small drum and tambourine with wood and rawhide. Add the ocarina that others have suggested and you would have a great traveling dungeon crawler band!
New life skill video on flute playing perhaps?
I juuuust might!
Now use this great idea and make... a set of skeleton Highland Bagpipes!!! 💖💖😎
Thank you..
I love this great job
This video was awesome! Next, you should try making an ocarina out of clay. I'm not remotely a skilled clay worker, but this was a really easy project to do. Just an idea.
So, I was looking into this but I would need to fire it, which I just don't have access to right no now. Maybe one outta woor though🤔
I don't think the firing is necessary as long as you let the ocarina dry. I just used air-dry clay, which is bad for making ocarinas because it tastes bad. But if you just put normal clay in the oven at like 400 degrees Fahrenheit, I think that would suffice. Also, what is woor?
that would be awesome, and you can use scupley clay so it can be baked in a regular oven. I have only made one and would love to see clvr's take on it.
Actually… why not a fimo ocarina 😂 a 4 hole one to start with and see how it sounds
Very impressed with your ability to create bone hands out of warbler. When I first saw the flute. I honestly thought you would grabbed a artificial dog bone which is what I plan on doing when I make my own. Try making a PVC native style flute. Much more forgiving on sound
I’m a flute player and by god am I gonna make this
If anyone wants to do this with an even more corpse like appearance, you can add sinew or old flesh looking effects with toilet paper. Get the cheapest tissue you can find, lay it on the plastic and then drag a tongue depressor dipped in liquid latex over it. Give it a bit to dry and then use a toothpick or wooden skewer to pick up the toilet paper, you can use additional latex to smooth lines and create remnants of ligaments on the surface. Also you can take some red silk yarn and lay it on, covering with more latex to create blood vessels. Then, use wood stain to add color to the effect, a red chestnut will look pretty bloody and a darker walnut will give a more “pulled out of a grave” impression. We used to do this with medical education skeletons to make them a bit more unsettling.
Oooh, yay! Leather! Now I can make sure my kids have shoes (or at least covers) that will match their costumes for the ren fair this year!
thank you so much for this! i've been debating what instrument to make for my ffxiv bard (i'm basically a bard irl so ofc i had to be one in-game as well xD) and now i know!! flutes exist in-game, i know how to play irl & the process also seems much easier than i ever would have expected!
also, you're a lot better at playing than you give yourself credit for! xD
IRL bards are AMAZING. Love that you bring your expertise to the game. If you make one, I hope you share how it comes out.
@@SkillTree of course!! thank you, again, for such a fun and informative tutorial!! i can't wait to bring my character to life :3
Love the flute 😁
Your love to detail in research always gets me!!!
I imagine it might be awesome in copper pipe, too, like a tin whistle.
Awesome bone flute, love the time you took to make it look like a real bone from a graveyard with all the layering of paints. Your attention to detail is what keeps me coming back and for the amazing content and energy you have. The videos are easy to follow, I have made three items from your videos already!
Probably gonna make this too, but I need to learn how to play an ocarina first
Me tooo. I really want a nice ocarina.
I know how to play them! The important thing is to not overthink the fingering
The piercings make you look cool, I never had the confidence for it.
Aww, thanks! If you wanted to try them and see how they look they make pretty good clip on ones and magnetic ones too. I have been toying with getting another higher up on my ear and am using some of the clip on ones to test the look😁
@@SkillTree Thank you for reply !
Looks great! When you were talking about the transition from the worbla bone to the pipe, there is foam clay that works very well with both worbla and pvc. You can sculpt it into shape like normal clay, and when it dries, you can sand it smooth to make a seamless transition. Keep in mind though, it is similar to eva foam when it dries, so please remember to wear a mask when sanding it down.
This makes me want to play a Bard Necromaner multiclass I can imagine them playing dark/sad songs to raise and buff the dead
THAT. IS. AWESOME! I love this idea.
That has major Sabriel ( Garth Nix series) vibes and I'm all in on it
I'm glad I saw this video before August!! :D I'm going to a LARP in Canada in August and I'm going as my D&D Ranger! I used to play flute in High School ages ago and still have mine at home. I wanted to take it to play as a musical instrument during the LARP but it isn't exactly decorum or go with my character's aesthetic. So seeing this and how it could tie into my character and play?? That's super dope. I just hope I can actually get it right! But it doesn't hurt to try regardless c:
This is the second video I've seen in a row where "making it smaller/longer/etc is difficult" ...you should come up with a Skill Tree Stretcher that returns removed material...like a Board Stretcher only multi purpose. You'd make a fortune.
This is my second video of yours (first being leather canteen) both were great, I have subbed. I may have saved a few as well :P
You deserve way more views
Binging your videos makes er/hospital visits bearable
I need to up my random elk bone collection game
That's cool. Might have to do this at some point and then learn to play flute
Do it Wolf!
Heckin glad you made a fun instrument! Looks great glad it works! If you do put together a cosplay I think your blue mage build would look awesome with a flute. Or give your currupted druid a gentle side with some musical old knowledge. Either way I think you'll find a way to have more fun with it!
The ideas are flowing. I wonder.............
What WILL you make?!?
@@SkillTree something probably difficult lol. But I'm assuming that this could potentially transfer over to other mediums.
You should make some bone drumsticks for me and my fellow percussionists
This would go great with the corrupt druid character you are making.
Play the notes to raise the army of the dead, come on Cl3ver join me in the rise of the Necromancers.
Wouldn’t adding the decorative stuff affect the vibration of the flute and therefore the tuning? I would think you would want to do the decorating then tune it afterwards.
This is awesome! Seriously great work. Only critique is the wash. I’m a miniature painter by trade, and the reason to use a wash and not watered down paint is because the wash has lower surface tension. If you use watered down paint, especially on a glossy surface, it’ll bead up.
May i suggest making a 3 string or 4 string guitar its simple to play like camp fire songs and you can use modern machine head tuners or peg tuner if you wish to use old tech. For ides and inspiration i suggest 3x3 3 string or any Puckett Cigar Box Guitar masterclass
Hey, I was the first one here for once, first comment and first view, neat!
HUZZAH!
As a flautist LARPer that's playing a forest witch kinda class, this is interesting...
I am deeply sorry for playing so poorly LOL. Glad this project could inspire!
@@SkillTree Poorly? Nah! You managed to make recognisable notes very fast, with a breathy quality yeah but they were good! I don't mean to sound condescending lol it's genuinely great for someone not used to the flute!
I was wondering btw, did the final coat of primer have an impact on the pitch at all? I was worrying about that with the paint being misted inside the holes, I'm wondering if I should avoid that
@@CrescentMond well THANK you! It is WAY harder than people who actually play make it look.
As for the paint, I didn't notice any issue or difference but my lack of experience may play a part in not letting me notice. I would be interested in your findings though!
This is really cool! I also feel targeted by the comment on having random bones lying around lol
Hello, I’m a new subscriber and I’m loving your channel. I’m a professional knife maker and I’d be happy to help you level up your skills. So feel free to get in touch with me with any questions you might have.
That's awesome! I just may be picking your brain this summer.
i might try this with some actual deer bones if i can find more science on how to make it tuned
Pls make video on make LARP Great axe or greatsword or war hammer :) it was liked video :)
I wish he got someone who actually plays the flute and Knows what there doing to have a go on it to see what they can do with it
So lusty Bard outfit next ?
hm i was trying to think of how i could make this work for a character of mine and while she is edgy i felt she was to classy to turn a simple bone into a flute… a skull into an ocarina though, that might be a different story…
Funny thing about the random bones, I do have a rat skull and its tail
Yo your band name should be dnd - death and the devil
Fun fact. The sound of a flute comes out ot the mouthpiece/blow hole not the open end.
Cl3ver, you can learn "happy birthday." It should be easy.
I wanna make one that's smaller but has deeper notes for ominous playing while I hunt my prey (in LARP) any recommendations?
Interesting! No expert but I thing to achieve that you may need to make the instrument wider. The resonance chamber is what dictates the tone. A larger chamber means the air doesn't vibrate as fast which makes for a lower tone. I would be interested to see if a short but "fat" flute would work at all. Let me know what you find.
@@SkillTree That makes complete sense. I'll try it out and get back to you. Thanks
Clever, is this safe? I grew up hearing PVC had lead in it.
Where’s that link??
So sorry! Just added it to my description. Have a look.
@@SkillTree yay link! Thank you!
@@IsNotAPipe thank YOU for pointing out the miss!
Yay I’m 666 liked lol
Hahaha bone flute.
