    Just a little warning: while copper and lead have been traditionally used for pipes and even silver has been used to store liquids, they are all heavy metals and not chemically innert. Especially acidic liquids will dissolve metal ions and we know from home brewing that copper can stain the product and alter the taste. If you do it regularly, it can even impact your health.
    Else, a beautiful gadget.

    • @isaacschmitt4803
      @isaacschmitt4803 2 года назад +47

      Very true. This has come into light lately with Moscow Mules and their copper mugs, though the main point of concern with that is the amount of *time* the acid is in contact with the copper. For a quick coffee brew, it might be fine, though if/when I make my own, I'm definitely going with a different pipe material like aluminum or something.

    As someone who has messed with alcohol burners for decades, there is that efficiency factor you spoke of. The sweet spot for most alcohol burners is right at 1" above the burner. So a pot stand is usually used along with wind shield as they are VERY ineffective in any wind.

  • @Carty239
    @Carty239 2 года назад +38

    For those wanting to be extra alchemical, I would add to your kit some butterfly pea tea. Use on its own or with another, pale coloured tea. If you brew that, it comes out blue. If you then add an acid (e.g. lemon juice) with an appropriate dropper, it will turn red. Nice little bit of extra magic.

    So, quick tip. For that homemade burner, you can actually put a cloth or something like that inside the main chamber to suck up some of the fuel, making it to where there isn't that much more of a mess if you spill it, and it'll increase the duration of the burn time

    A little trick I learnt as a technician, bung up one end of your pipe with a bung then fill the pipe with fine sand tapping the sand down to get it tightly packed then when you have only enough room to jam in a bung in the other end you can now gentle bend the pipe to suit your needs.
    The second things are to do with the finish on your wooden box. A friend of mine renovates furniture, as you can imagine when the woodworm has been through your chair for lunch some of the wood ends up unusable, so of course you make a replacement part. Apparently the thing a lot of people don't realise is that without the worm holes in the wood the new part won't match. The solution is to get a disk of wood about the size of a one cent piece and put seven panel pins, randomly, all the way through so that you have a little disk to tap randomly over the surface of the wood to give the effect of woodworm. the other thing you can do to age your wood is to wax your wood, don't be mean with the wax, and instead of polishing it back with a cloth polish it back with fine wire wool. This will give that lovely effect you get on aged wood where the grain has swollen and been naturally rubbed back down and you get that slight rounding to the wood grain edges.

    If you want to make a lot of coffee, but don’t want to break character. I'd recommend old cowboy coffee pots. Like, actual pots made just for brewing coffee. You add water, let it heat, add the grounds, and then let it boil and brew. I’m trying to think of a good solution to help prevent it from getting knocked over but still being compact. If people have suggestions or things that they’ve done, please let me know!
    And maybe it would be a good idea to pack a thin heat resistant glove that you can roll up and store somewhere (honestly, those regular cheap MaxiFlex work gloves that come in a big pack have worked great for me in the past when handling hot things for short periods of time!) that way you can handle some of the hot stuff if needed.

      Adding a heavy weight to the bottom of the burner might reduce chances of tipping over. It would also have the added benefit of insulating whatever surface the burner is on.

    This has definitely revived my urge to make myself a distillation kit for my herbs! Time to look back into it and do some manipulation to make this work for distillation, and a second one for tea

    If you ever need a rubber bottle stopper last minute - look into homebrew supply stores. They have plenty of sizes and there's usually one in most major cities!

    I've probably watched this video a thousand times already lol I love you guys! Y'all make the dopest things! I've always been iffy about getting into larping, worried about who would make fun of me. After binging on your channel, I've been hyper fixated on not only creating my own character, but Ive been diving straight into making my own "practical props". I jus wanted to say Thank you guys and I appreciate your content more than I can really articulate. Ok, now to continue binging lmao

    That turned out great, love the aesthetic and the craftsmanship! I recognize the stove design from backpacking, a lot of ultra-lighters will use those because they weight next to nothing.
    The only suggestion I'd make is to consider a layer of varnish or something to protect the decal. Make sure it looks right for the build though. Water-based polyurethane can have minimal impact with 1-2 coats.

    ANOTHER AMAZING HIT!!! I absolutely love your channel!!! Slight modification to your burner. I use alcohol stoves when I go backpacking. I use a “priming tray” for it. It’s a small tray that goes under the stove, has additional alcohol on it and is lit and it’s purpose is to heat up the alcohol in the stove from the outside and bottom of the stove. Because heat rises it warms the alcohol faster than the heat of the flame on the fumes attempting to warm the can from the top and the heat moving through the metal going down to the liquid. Make sense? Essentially just take and cut out another bottom of a coke can like you did for the cap to cover the alcohol. And put a dent or two in it to create a raised surface for the stove to make contact with but still allows air flow between the priming tray and stove. Pour on a little alcohol and in like 30sec or so the stove should be heated up enough that when you cap the center it should plume out immediately. Also… I would assume this goes without saying but I’ll say it anyway… you want both the priming tray and stove lit when doing this for best results.

    I know this is an older video, but i wanted to comment just in case- please be careful when making alcohol burners! Never pour alcohol from a bottle on an open flame, the flame can travel up the stream of alcohol and cause the bottle to explode, theres at least 1 case a few years ago of kids who died after messing around with coke can alcohol burners. Im sure everyone watching this is capable of taking adequate precautions and making sure they know how to put out the fire, but its worth mentioninf regardless. Super cool build, i want to dome something similar for my matcha set!

    Okay so first time I've ever heard of you and this channel. You're my new favorite person. Not even half way through, no shit, best thing ever. Practical, whimsy, good vibes, & not some elitist bullshit that would cost a million bucks to do. Also a great combination of sciences and the mystical.

    @8:22 ahhh, i know that feeling well. i used to drive for uber, and i'd usually do 12-6am, so i'd hit up home depot at ilke 6:30 in the morning when i finished up and it was usually like 9 by the time i finished wandering around looking at tiny fittings and all sorts of bits and bobs that i didn't know existed. it was excellent.

    As a Victorian gentleman, I’m more partial to the more modern Balancing Siphon, which works using the same principle as your traveling kit, except it extinguishes the fire as soon as the liquid travels into the second vessel. Although it is quite unwieldy, so that’s a point to you and well deserved, sir!

    I have only just discovered your channel, great videos and awesome energy! In this build you use a soda can stove, although functional, they are not very durable. After not many uses the thin aluminum becomes brittle, and fragile. A much more durable option is to use aluminum water bottles, the cheap, simple ones. I found several at the local Good Samaritan store for just a few bucks. The construction is almost the same and there are videos on here that can teach you how. It is another fun, and easy project to do, and the end result will last for years.

    You can fill soft copper tubing with water and then freeze it. After frozen you can bend and manipulate the tubing by hand without crimping it.
