    Call me crazy, but I really like the Composite NTSC signal a lot more. The colors are more saturated and the details are clearly designed to pop in that signal. (e.g. the skid marks on the track) Best solution is still to grab the CRT off the neighbor's curb when they toss it out like so much refuse.
    (I had an extended conversation with a few people on this very practice at the Vintage Computing Festival last week.)

      I think that is a pretty solid statement. My only exception would be the N64. Which does look a bit nicer. It's really not enough to make me switch over the 64 but it will definitely be used at conventions like MGC. Doom64 could use the brightening...

    Great comparison video! I'd have to agree with a few of the comments. I rock s-video on a CRT and it just blows these HDMI cables out of the water. However, the convenience for connecting to a flat panel when you don't have space for a CRT is legit. They'll keep refining the tech and it'll get to where it needs to be eventually. 👍

      @@Retr0Rob Thanks for clearing that up, as the washout wasn't necessarily bad, I just love saturation. If it's not too bad then likely I could fiddle with the TV to handle the rest. Clarity and how clean the image quality couldn't be ignored though. The HDMI did great on that.

  • @Frank_D
    @Frank_D 5 лет назад +5

    I've seen a few reviews and the general consensus is that the colors are washed out on this device. In general Hyperkin's color palettes seem to be a bit off when it comes to their HDMI cables and their consoles. Their shade of red, in particular is the really big issue.
    The one thing to note is that this isn't actually an upscaler. Rather it's just taking the signal and passing it through HDMI without doing anything like line doubling than an upscaler would do, so it's not going to make a huge improvement. For what it is, it's a cheap way to play these consoles on a tv that might not have AV in.

I came here for side-by-sides to tell the difference, but it's hard to tell in the recordings. The game still looks good, but textures like the Skip logo are still blurry. I'm not sure if that just means the image file used is inherently compressed though.

  • @randompersononthisearth7812

    To be honest, your better off just getting an av to hdmi converter. It's probably cheaper, and you don't have to have washed out screens like the hyperkin cable. The one I use is the Old Skool converter. it has mixed reviews, but for my N64 it works great.
    I just wish hyperkin would actually make, well, you know, an improvement in the looks of the games. Looking at both, besides the obvious brighter color, they seemed very similar, almost too similar.

    • @Retr0Rob
      @Retr0Rob  4 года назад

      FYI I use both regularly (I may have mentioned that in the video) The HDMI to AVI adapters are about $10 less, but they are way flimsier and don't offer the option for 4:3 -- I also use some HDMI boxes but again they are bulky and will not help if your original AV cables are damaged -- most do not offer 4:3 out either. The general rule is you cannot get better output than what you console actually can put out. Some DO put out RGB though and I have a couple of those cables but not for the N64. Once of these days I will do an N64 game with this cable directly to my capture card and show how that looks.

    If your TV accepts composite then there is no point using a composite to HDMI upscaler or a composite to HDMI cable. They literally contain the same chip used to handle analog inputs in most TVs except they connected it to an HDMI transmitter instead of an LCD panel. It only makes sense of your TV is HDMI-only. Now, there's a chance that the Hyperkin cable here is using S-Video instead of composite but it definitely is not using RGB like the SNES cables use since the stock N64 does not have RGB. If it works with a stock SNS-101 "mini" SNES then it is using composite because the stock SNS-101 does not support S-Video.

    • @Retr0Rob
      @Retr0Rob  5 лет назад

      I bring about 10-15 consoles out to MGC each year, along with a half dozen smaller shows. 10-15 monitors come along for that ride. Getting simpler hookups is a HUGE deal for me. I tested using the Dreamcast HDMI's last year and it definitely saved time and looked really good. I used to use a Component out and an upscaler, as the larger TV's we were using had no Component in's. It looked great, but cheap upscalers cost a bit of time: both in connection and I ended up re-soldering the cheap connectors a couple times. For the record I assume that everyone knows that you cannot get better visuals than the outputs that the console provides (Outside of physical modification). Anywho. If you do large shows with small crews, these things are freaking great. I use an Extron Multiplexer for my composite at home though. I have a video on that.

    • @emmettturner9452
      @emmettturner9452 5 лет назад

      @@Retr0Rob Yes, which is why it's really unfortunate that only the earliest analog to HDMI cables were powered off the console. Since they added the aspect ratio switch they stopped powering them from the console and removed the only real convenience advantage they had. :(
      Of course, DCHDMI, UltraHDMI, WiiDual, etc is hella-convenient but those are the kinda things you treat yourself to. ;)
      That said, it is possible to get better visuals from CVBS Composite through a device when compared to most digital TVs since most incorrectly apply deinterlacing to non-interlaced 240p games and some purpose-built devices don't. Some TVs do support 240p but even those often require S-Video, RGBS, or YPbPr Component. For the TVs that don't properly handle 240p a RetroTink 2X will look better and could even potentially lower the latency, since the TV won't try to de-interlace 480p. It ain't cheap tho' (~$100), which is why I don't really consider it a comparable alternative to these [analog]2HDMI and retro console HDMI cables.

    • @Retr0Rob
      @Retr0Rob  5 лет назад

      @@emmettturner9452 I pretty much agree. that said most users are more concerned about whether the picture is good enough for everyday use -- does it look good? If it does than you have your solution. There is nothing wrong (or right) about that. Because how things look is really just about personal opinion. Realistically the absolutely authentic way to play is with a CRT. Real scanlines, proper ratio. Your light guns work. Not everyone has the room, money, or will to do this. Some folks either like or don't care if the aspect ratio is 4:3 or not. Stretched screens drive me nuts (even though I don't generally represent things that way in my videos). If someone likes it though, I'm fine with it. It's their opinion. Basically All these products do is help fill the gap between authenticity and what folks can deal with reasonably. I think that is just fine. The goal of gaming isn;t authenticity: It's having fun.

      LOL. It's brighter and a bit cleaner through HDMI but not a lot. There is a couple of unfair things: 1) I use an Extron Switcher for my composite out which may have boosted the visuals a little better than what you might get just plugging it in. 2) It looks way brighter in the recording than it really is. Unfortunately if I filtered it to compensate then I am changing the test.... which is a problem as I would be faking it. I really hate doing screen recordings for this reason. The HDMI is a cleaner signal as there is much less noise, but it's not what most would expect. Really these use an S-Video signal as input which should be quite a bit better than composite...

    Limited Run Games is currently selling these Hyperkin HDMI cables for everything from the 16bit consoles up to the Dreamcast and PS2. I don't know how the cables for all those other consoles fair, but this one is clearly garbage. Composite on a modern flat-screen should NEVER look better then HDMI, and that's exactly what I'm seeing here.
    This is sadly no surprise though. 3rd party brands such as Hyperkin and Retro-bit have always been extremely iffy. On rare occasions they will make a good product, but somewhere between 90-95% of their stuff is utter trash. You can almost always expect something of poor quality, and usually faulty as well. Most of their controllers have faulty D-pads for example. That's not usually something you'll notice while playing a side-scroller, but play any game with an overhead view (or anything with 4 or 8 directional movement) and you'll soon see the problem when pressing "down" causes you to move right.

      Are you talking about the aliasing? Some of the effects you see are due to the camera's attempts at focus, and to auto balance the color. I have never been very happy with recording from screens due to that and have some complaints in how videos turn out. Some 'tubers change the settings to get a better picture, but I'm always worried that changing the settings on the screen or recording equipment is in a way "cheating" as it changes the conditions of the test and I really want people to make up their own minds about this rather than convince them of my opinion. I think it can be argued either way though. There is no "Real" pixel density difference between this and composite -- It DOES upscale, but the actual output of the gamecube does not improve when upscaled: Data cannot come from no-where. If an original graphic is 64x64 and use an upscaler to upscale to 256x256 you do not get the fidelity of a 256x256 native graphic: You just get 64x64 image with more dots in it. Yes, there is AA and such, but that is a filter. not an actual improvement in the original image.

    Hyperkin really missed the mark on these cables. Clearly they’re taking the composite or at best s-video signal from the console and covering it to hdmi. Everyone knows that an RGB signal will give you the best picture possible yet these cables aren’t using it.

    • @Killatia

      While that is true there are some models that do not output RGB, like the us version of the N64 and GameCube.

      @@Trusteft California requires a warning for plastics with a chance of releasing cancer causing chemicals. I'm not super familiar so it may or may not be very valid. I've read that there is no penalty for placing the warning "falsely" so some companies that use plastics just put it on there. I have not been able to confirm that though.

      Svideo is a superior signal to composite, which is what is generally used on the consoles (and I use for the control part of the video) so it should look better. Composite combines the color and luminance signals where Svideo splits the 2 improving quality quite a bit. This is not to be confused with Component which is even clearer. All 3 supported systems mostly were played using composite cables during their production spans and only the GameCube had component out "natively" through a rather expensive cable. You cannot get a "better" signal than the device can actually output (although some improvement can be had through hardware hacking). That said some old composites get a bit of interference so these cables can come in handy in those cases.

      @@Retr0Rob Thanks for the lesson but is
      not true the SNES can do RGB except The SNES jr and The Gamecube can do 480p with component cables or the HDMI adapter the only console that its highest resolution is thought s-video is the N64 so is doing a disservice to a SNES and Gamecube owners as RGB and 480p look better on a HD Tv and s-video does not.

    • @Retr0Rob
      @Retr0Rob  4 года назад +1

      @@unspacy110 Opps, forgot about RGB out, but I did mention the Component out on the Gamecube. That said s-video IS a much better output than composite which is what the vast majority of people were using on their game systems at the time. As mentioned in the video I regularly use upscalers from composite and they do seem to do a better job than these cables as well, especially on N64.

    Composite ... the lowest signal and more .... (limit acceptable to our eyes or buying a RGB cable (often) ...) suddenly, the composite cable puts a serious slap in terms of display, especially in terms of colors (brighter in composite) ... has this HDMI cable .... I can not even imagine an official RGB cable or see the famous YUV cable ....
    Yes it can't work these consoles are not made to be able to receive a better signal other than that of RGB ...
    The top on these retro machines is for me, the YUV by far.
    In short, this HDMI cable is useless for any visual enhancement.
    It is a disappointment and clearly a bad idea to have thought about it.
    Le composite... le signal le plus bas en plus.... (limite acceptable pour nos yeux d'ou le faite d'acheter un câble RGB (souvent)...) pour le coup, le câble composite lui met une sérieuse claque en terme d'affichage, surtout au niveau des couleurs (plus vives en composite)... a ce câble HDMI.... je n'imagine même pas un câble RGB officiel ou voir le fameux câble YUV....
    Eh oui ça ne peut pas marcher ces consoles là ne sont pas faites pour pouvoir recevoir un meilleurs signal autre que celui du RGB...
    Le top sur ces machines rétro c'est pour moi, l'YUV de loin.
    En bref, ce câble HDMI ne sert à rien aucunes améliorations visuel.
    C'est une déception et clairement une mauvaise idée d'y avoir pensé.
    Cordialement.
