    I hate Amber even more because of the one line: “I guess we were both lied to”. She compares a lifetime's worth of astronomical lies to a few months of a potentially lifesaving lie. @@thekrakenexperiment280 The problem with narcissists like Amber is that they don't mean to hurt people around them, but they do it constantly out of a need to be the center of attention. This leads to them bringing down those around them whether they realize they are doing it or not. Her saying "we were both lied to" is like talking to your wife who was raped violently by her own father and bringing up that now she knows what it's like when she's aggressive during consensual sex. It does psychological damage to the partner while also making them feel apologetic to you so you can control them like an invisible chain slipped around their neck called guilt. This scene is actually far worse than that because Mark didn't just go through a violent near-death beating by his own father; he was suddenly forced to deal with massive loss of life and being coated with the blood of the people he swore to protect, having his views of the world challenged, finding out his race is evil, and many more things in his traumatic experience. When she came back in the end and said 'we were both lied to', that pissed me off so much. She's basically saying Nolan lying to Mark his entire life, using him to kill people, and nearly being beaten to death is the same as him lying to her about being Invincible just to protect his identity. She's equating those two things and NOW that Mark has experienced something that - in her eyes - was equal to what he did to her, she can forgive him. That is so unbelievably toxic and narcissistic that it makes me sick.

    • @Tmanowns
      @Tmanowns 3 года назад +282

      @@stephensmith7327 nowhere am I saying that's not what she said. I'm saying that's a stupid reason to be mad, if she figured out he's a super hero. Secret identities are secret for a reason. Additionally, they're in a pretty new high school relationship. He in no way owes her the truth with something that important.
      Again, it would have been much more sympathetic and understandable for her to find out and not be able to emotionally handle what being a super hero's significant other entails. So instead of her saying "I've known for weeks, but I wanted you to say it," after blowing up on him for "abandoning" them to fight the cyborg at the college, she instead says something along the lines of "I guess I can't be that mad at you, if you're saving lives, but I don't think I can do this. I can't wait all night hoping you're safe." That's valid, and not toxic. It's also not entitled.
      The combination of her figuring out weeks earlier AND being pissed that he didn't say it is what makes it stupid. If she figured it out, she should have told him she knows. Instead, she's just getting mad that he's not doing something she's not telling him to do.
      Additionally, her returning, and having the AUDACITY to say to him "I guess we both were lied to." As if him not telling her he's Invincible for her safety is even REMOTELY similar to him being lied to by his father his entire life, having his body used as a weapon to kill thousands, and being beaten nearly to death.
      Again, if it was what I suggested (and apparently what was written by the author), then she would be much more likable, and way less toxic and self centered. Her returning would also show that she's actually selfless, rather than selfish, because it's not merely her forgiving him for something that was in no way wrong, but instead her putting aside the fear, anxiety, and struggles she goes through, in order to support him in his darkest hour.

Then when its convenient/acceptable to tell her before she figures out(as of the trip, but she still didn't know which hero he specifically was). He tosses out flimsy excuses. Simply it's his constant doubling back/duel speak. Every crucial moment he says she's important to him. No one is singing Omni-man's praises as a great person. He's the villian, people understand that, but in his story theres depth. Sent to earth to conquer it, but falls in love with a woman and his child and struggles between fulfilling his duty as a soldier and as a father and husband. Though you dont like his actions there's something there to connect to and understand. Mark, balancing the life of a superhero and teenage boy. Other characters have things that connect you to them too. Except for Amber, she's all "good", no drawbacks, no story, no struggle. And not because thats her purpose but because the writers want to force her down your throat. So all she does is come off as pretentious and condescending. Her feelings about Mark were valid and understandable because he wasnt there and she thought she wasnt important to him. But her understanding that he was Invincible and still treats him like that puts the nail in the coffin. You already have a character thats unlikeable and then you have her do that and its over. She later breaks up with but it’s not mean spirited, and she’s not mad at him for being invincible, it just scares knowing he’s always out there in danger and she just can’t deal with that in her life at that moment. Both mark and Eve had to go trough that trough the comic, But not Amber because she was a plot device, by making her a more complex character she needs character development and flaws to overcome. Wich ... is okay since she seems to be a little too manipulative ,selfish and harsh to Mark. But the problem with the show. IS that the writers seem to not think her attitude is flawed and put the guilt on MARK. wich sets a terrible relationship going on and the writers may be treating it as legit. If this is the case the relationship between Amber and mark can get worse on a writing standpoint. I hope season 2 recognizes Amber personality as flawed So she can have an actual arc.
      I have this fear with the series that they make the same mistake a lot of comics have been doing for years now. I liked her before she realized she knew. After that I didn't like her character at all. Like, if she knew for weeks and is as smart and she was interpreted as, she should have took those weeks to understand. If her problem was the lying, lying protects his identity as well as saved her from stressing over how much he might die every day. If her problem is him missing out, she knows that saving the world/people is far more important than any of their dates. And she even treated the secret identity like it wasn't a big deal
    Mark: its a secret identity!
    Amber (ignoring mark): and...
    And then she comes back in the finale just kidding him and saying she wasn't the only one being lied to (which is not only not an apology, but it isn't even right to compare lies since nolan's lies were life altering while mark's were a minor inconvenience). Amber is a victim of "poor" adaptation transition. Kirkman (the writer of the comics and the show) really wanted to change Amber and it shows. He might have been embarrassed that Amber was a rather flat character. The changes are great, but Kirkman did a bad job of changing events for Amber. There are a couple of scenes of Amber obviously not knowing that Mark is a hero, especially the infamous "You left us to that thing" scene. This is mostly because well.... those scenes were from the comics. Kirkman did alot of changes from the comics to make it more sense, BUT he did not have the foresight to change the scenes of Amber that were added to the show.

    The main problem with Amber is that she's so obviously abusive and entitled, but nobody in-universe acknowledges this (and actually blame Mark for Amber's abuse) because the writers themselves don't seem to be aware. This shatters the illusion of character agency, leaving behind a bunch of hand puppets for a writing team that's incapable of understanding basic human decency. In this way, this one awful character drags down the whole show. People hate her because she's essentially a malignant tumor on the quality of an otherwise great series.

    Instead of having Amber not know (since the focus of the show is, in a reductionist sense, subverting expectations of superhero stories) that Mark is Invincible, the reason and dialog of her anger should be changed to *match* her knowledge that Mark is Invincible.
    If the writers wanted to be really clever with it, Amber's writing could change based on when she figures out his identity, i.e is angry b/c he's absent to being angry that he's lying.
    This way it fixes the cognitive dissonance, keeps the story fresh, and makes us more sympathetic to Amber.
    Truth be told I don't think Amber forgiving Mark should ever have happened, even in my preferred rewrite. I actually really like the change you proposed here. Not only would it make her anger make much more sense, but it plays heavily into a big theme of the show and one of Omni-Man's main arguments: in the grand scheme of things, Amber and Mark's relationship doesn't matter. It would really put a spin on how we view Mark as a result because now him guiding her along is somewhat akin to Nolan's situation with Debbie. It really would make us question whether or not he really SHOULD be trying to carry on the relationship. At least this is my personal opinion.

    • @emilyprice178
      @emilyprice178 Год назад +2

      I agree. I think the point the writers were trying to make was that if Mark was serious enough about Amber to talk about going to college together, then she deserved to know the truth. Sure, don't immediately tell a new girlfriend that you're a superhero, but you've gotta figure it out quick if you're serious about her, because a relationship can't survive without her knowing the truth. Mark's pathetic excuses were an insult to Amber's intelligence, and the lies to hide his identity put a strain on their relationship. If he wasn't confident in telling her the truth by the time he was making plans for college with her, then he shouldn't have been stringing her along in a relationship. It really would have worked better if they'd gone with the scenario proposed here, if she hadn't known but still been angry because instead of trusting her with the truth, he just kept stringing her along with lies and expecting her to be too stupid to figure it out. Or alternatively, change the post-college-fight scene to be Amber confronting Mark in that moment when he lies again, telling him that she knows that he's Invincible, and she's angry at him for continuing to lie about it when he's making long term plans with her, because by that point he should trust her enough to tell her.

Yet he still won't tell her what she already knows. Proving he's just saying what's necessary in the moment to keep her around. Also I see many of y'all don't flip out over the two faced thing Eve said to Mark about what she told Amber about his circumstance after ep 5(Telling her Mark loves her in a cryptic and non specific message. Then when she speaks with Mark tells him she told Amber he got hit by a bus; quite a specific detail.) Also yes I know what'll happen regardless of how the rest of this dynamic is drawn out into its conclusion.

      @@garrisonweekes8808 its crazy how y'all don't look at all the finer details that factor into what happens and why. Ignoring other characters misgivings, flaws along the way; including William giving his identity out at every turn, or failing to apply and accept William and Eve stance towards Marks decisions regarding Amber. Plus Amber parallels Debbie's situation and actions. The only differences are its a teenager relationship vs. marriage with varying scope for what truth is hidden coming from Mark and Nolan. One doesn't let his girlfriend in on what his life entails; yet keeping his truth hidden from her won't matter either way if a villain were to find out. As they always attack those close to them. Whether those loved ones know or not. While the other doesn't let his wife know whats really in store or how he actually views her importance(initially...)

    It's not just Amber imo. It seemed like all of his friends knowing he's been getting decimated told him he's a piece of trash when they broke up. It didn't seem practical for Eve to tell him off given what her character arc was, his best friend saw him getting folded on his behalf and still gave him a talking to. It's almost like they disproved their own point in the middle of the story board and kept going.

      I mean look at her track record. Manipulation, jealousy dating, immediate rebound guys after breaking up with Mark, blackmail, the "I know" scene which recontextualizes everything to mean she was needlessly and selfishly hounding Mark and emotionally manipulating him when she knew he was saving lives. I'm about 1 step away from just labelling her evil quite frankly.
