Music is the anthem of the Night of the Proms, a concert series that has been taking place in Germany during the Advent season for over 30 years. John Miles and Music were an integral part of these concerts until his death. Even now, the song is still played at every concert.
I saw John Miles when he had his group the John Miles Set way back in 1970 when he was a staple in the Working Men's Clubs in the North East of England. There were never, ever any spare seats, ever. He also played the drums as well as piano and guitar. A very talented man and for me, his finest song His album Rebel is worth a listen. RIP John.
John had a great run of hits in the UK in the 70s, this classic was the biggest of those. It’s one of those songs to be played at your funeral! Latterly he was part of Tina Turner’s band for a number of years. An excellent musician and vocalist.
When I was young, my mum gave me her 7" record collection. This was one of them. And I used to play it over and over and over again. This defines nostalgia for me. Thanks for doing it.
Unfortunately John is no longer with us. This is one of my all time favourite songs and it takes me back to my youth. You need to check out one of he’s live performances of this track that he did many years later in a European rock proms concert. It included an amazing intro by a soul group whose name escapes me. The performance is also with a full orchestra and is an amazing, electrifying production. You can find it on RUclips, easily.
One of the greatest tunes of the 70s. I never saw John Miles live as a solo artist but saw him 3 times as guitarist and backing singer in Tina Turner's touring band. I think he was also the musical director of her live shows.
I first saw him live as he was opening for Robin Trower at Empire Pool Wembley. Now us Trower fans weren’t really interested in JM who was in the charts with Highfly or whatever. But his chops and force of personality got everyone out of the bar and in their seats. This song was a showstopper of course. He got an encore I think which isn’t bad forthe opener! Saw him several over the years. Never disappointed. His later album ‚ upfront‘ is a barnstormer and my absolute favourite.
When are people going to get it? Neither Jay nor Amber are saying any more about what is happening. Just enjoy their videos and leave their private life just that, Private. I am sure they would both appreciate the space while they do what's best for them and their kids
This is my first time hearing him too and I really love all the different sounds and instruments. Reminds me of The Moody Blues a little bit. I've got to check his other music out now. Thanks Jay for picking this one to react to.
Thank you for your reaction Jay and for your thoughts on music in general. This song will be in my heart forever. Music was indeed my first love. You know, I was quite late in getting a boyfriend... Seeing John Miles, on the piano with his guitar, accompanied by an orchestra, for years at the Night of The Proms was a joy every time. His son John Miles Junior is a musician too. The weather over here is cold and wet as well so I rely on the music to replace the warmth of the sun.
He hold the leading profile on the yearly (night of the proms) ive heard this live in sweden with him behind the grand piano, got tears in my eyes ,shivers in my back
OMG!! John Miles!!! That's a name I have not heard in years! I have a few of his solo albums...and his contributions to the Alan Parsons Project. THANK YOU Jay for reminding me of his amazing talent. 😄
I asked you to look at this song years ago! He played this many times at The Proms, with full orchestra and choir which takes it to another level and with thousands of people in the audience total heaven! Check out the2012 prom version!
Great tune. The hot summer of 1976 I was at school and this was blasting out all summer long on top of the pops and BBC summer time shows. Brings back memories.
Good North East lad. Saw him twice at Redcar Bowl & Middlesbrough Town Hall in the 70’s. Fantastic & so underrated. Worked with Tina Turner on many tours
What a wonderful song...started out calm, soft and peaceful "lullaby type" song. Then...surprise!!! It sped up, became loud and his voice became a little gritty!!! Then turned back to calm and peaceful again. Just when I thought it was almost done with just soft music then BAMB!!! Muscic sped up and played louder!!! It was a treat to my ears!!! comment by Karen!!!
This song ist a masterpiece❤ Thank you to react of this great Song🙏🏻 I enjoy this video so much at 6'o clock in the morning, with a cup of coffee in my hand and i'm happy to see , this big smile in your face, because you enjoy this Music too🥰 Take care of you🍀👍🏻
I'm so glad you started this channel to educate yourself through us (well, sort of through us) that there are way way more types of music than just rap going right back to the 50s up until the 90s and see how music has changed. I remember once you or Amber said that since starting this channel you were so surprised the amount of modern records that have sampled old songs and it was that part of the song that was your favourite which says a lot about music from the 60s-80s. I'm not going to say modern music is rubbish but what I will say is that there was definitely more variety in the charts back in 70s and 80s.
John Miles made such a variety of music. His other two early singles released either side of this were markedly different. Highfly was a catchy, but slightly quirky pop song and Slow Down was a high tempo dance number.
I remember seeing John Miles a few years ago in Manchester he was a guest in a Concert of Michael McDonald he was brilliant. When this single came out it was a huge in the 70’s!
Seen John Miles playing the clubs around the north east of England which is where he was born he became more well known with his first hit Highfry which you must try next.
Notice how the first singing section is in a major key, the second section is in a minor key so it sounds like something is slightly wrong but you can't put your finger on it, and the final section is back to major key and all the conflicts have been resolved and everything sounds great again for the climax.
I love this song and he never used any tricks or flicks, no studio enhancements or voice correction Oprah is the true musician la f that era. A true talent and icon.
Epic tune from 1976 that is iconic for Europeans of a certain generation , other great tracks from John who is sadly no longer with us include 'Highfly' ( not to be confused with 'Sky high' by Jigsaw & 'Flying high' by the Commodores !) & 'Slow down' which is more disco !
Ahh finally you did this one, such a great anthem to celebrate music Please do "Deep purple - Child in time" and "Mark&Clark band - Worn down piano" also sometime soon
Funnily I also saw John Miles at the Free trade Hall in Manchester around the time this single was out. He was the support band for Robin Trower, and got a pretty rough time from the crowd. Think they thought he was too much of a pop artist, rather than a rock artist! It was a pity, as they were all good musicians, and didn't deserve to have bottles of water thrown on the stage!😮. Nice reaction J 😊
I implore you to view a live performance of this with a full orchestra, the one at the Proms (London) is mind blowing. Even if you don't review it again here, you MUST watch the proms. ruclips.net/video/3Nz7gtCArOw/видео.htmlfeature=shared
PS-Instrumentation reminds me of Alan Parson's Project. Interesting what you say about different kinds of music, all types can be good and moving and uplifting, couldn't imagine being without it.
I hope this leads you straight into his time with Tina Turner! Check out ‘Try A Little Tenderness’ with him and Tina from her 2000 Wembley concert. Then I highly suggest more Tina from this same concert, Nutbush, Proud Mary, Better Be Good To Me, We Don’t Need Another Hero. 💜🙏🏽
I have recently been diving deep into the old country music I loved in the 80s. I am a rocker at heart so this is totally your fault! But there are some female country singers I would LOVE to see you react to: Anne Murray - Snowbird, You Needed Me, Just Another Woman In Love, Danny's Song. OR, Mary Chapin Carpenter - I Feel Lucky, Down At the Twist and Shout, He Thinks He'll Keep Her, Shut Up and Kiss Me. Lorrie Morgan - What Part Of No, Except For Monday, Something In Red, Dear Me. Believe me, there are lots more, but this is good for starters. 😉
Loooove this song. If you ever get chance to react to the live version, it's 10 times more epic. As a suggestion, the live performance from night of the proms 2012 👌
To live without my music
Would be impossible to do
'Cause in this world of troubles
My music pulls me through
👋🏻 🇦🇷

There is an incredible live version of this when he’s older. Nothing short of spectacular.
RIP John.
He had a northern soul single one minute every hour that was released in 1973 not a hit but was big in the clubs
@@philiptodd7062 always loved his version of Come Away Melinda.
John had a great run of hits in the UK in the 70s, this classic was the biggest of those. It’s one of those songs to be played at your funeral!

John Miles did perform on some of The Alan Parsons Project albums.
When I was young, my mum gave me her 7" record collection. This was one of them. And I used to play it over and over and over again. This defines nostalgia for me. Thanks for doing it.
I always feel I need to applaud when that song finishes
Unfortunately John is no longer with us.

Beautiful! Never heard this before, but I very much liked it. Thank you for introducing me to this.

It's a real classic song and performance.

Thanks for telling me that I didn’t know RIP John Miles 😢
A love song to music, an all-time classic.❤
I believe he was Tina Turner's director of music, also a guitarist for her on stage and in the studio.
What a total classic. Great choice Jay! Keep rocking!
He hold the leading profile on the yearly (night of the proms) ive heard this live in sweden with him behind the grand piano, got tears in my eyes ,shivers in my back
Always loved this song...and the slow parts make me emotional..❤️
Get ready for a musical journey Its a beast of a song .🇬🇧
Mr music John miles RIP . Fantastic song writer & fantastic artist.
OMG!! John Miles!!! That's a name I have not heard in years! I have a few of his solo albums...and his contributions to the Alan Parsons Project. THANK YOU Jay for reminding me of his amazing talent. 😄
That was an epic release in its time and is still fresh as ever, dont you just love those french horns and trombones kicking in towards the end

Greatest song ever written, shall been plaid on my funeral
Great idea but better "check" your spelling! 😊
@user-dh5bnafe4b sorry that i’m not any guru on your language,i shouldn’t make any comets.jag tar det på svenska istället.
OK. Just a lighthearted joke that I thought might amuse you, plaid being a check pattern. No insult intended.

Gives me goosebumps every time 🥰
“Slow Down” is a great track…totally different to this and “One minute every hour” is another one…big Northern Soul sound.
Saw him live in 1977. This was his one big hit.
John Miles made such a variety of music. His other two early singles released either side of this were markedly different. Highfly was a catchy, but slightly quirky pop song and Slow Down was a high tempo dance number.
Music at its best
I remember seeing John Miles a few years ago in Manchester he was a guest in a Concert of Michael McDonald he was brilliant. When this single came out it was a huge in the 70’s!
This song is incredible!

Oh Jordan. I've been wanting you to listen to this for years ❤
*"The Kings - This Beat Goes On/Switchin' to Glide"*
John Miles worked a lot with Tina Turner!
Notice how the first singing section is in a major key, the second section is in a minor key so it sounds like something is slightly wrong but you can't put your finger on it, and the final section is back to major key and all the conflicts have been resolved and everything sounds great again for the climax.
Alan Parsons produced this album. John Miles also performed on several Alan Parsons Project albums.
Quick fun fact John Miles was Tina Turner's musical director for here live performance's and he was in her touring band.
The greatest production in music history 🎶❤️
I love this song and he never used any tricks or flicks, no studio enhancements or voice correction Oprah is the true musician la f that era. A true talent and icon.
Classic track from the 70's. Great to hear it again and great reaction.
Epic track, was a huge hit in the spring of 1976.
Classic!
Loved it since it first came out! Great choice!
so glad you put his one on iconic 70s sound
He has only recently passed away great LP rebel
Really glad you finally got around to one of my favourite musicians, Jay. Singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and Tina Turners musical director.
John Miles was a musical genius. Listen to the track "Slow Down" Jay, its funky!
“Slow Down” by him is also a banger.
Surprised by the proggy 7/4 time sig. Liked all the transitions.
Never heard of him before but I like this song.
An absolute classic! R.I.P. John ❤
Tina Turner & John Miles - Try A Little Tenderness
John been on quite a few tours with Tina
So glad you love this song. It’s a masterpiece!!
This was frequently used in Ice skating free programs back in the day......
Stranger in the City and Slow Down are great songs by him
90's instrumental suggestion - "Children" by Robert Miles.
Ahh finally you did this one, such a great anthem to celebrate music
Please do "Deep purple - Child in time" and "Mark&Clark band - Worn down piano" also sometime soon

The performance in this video don't do the song justice. You have to see him perform it live at the proms with a full orchestra behind him... epic
Jay, check out 'Slowdown' and 'Manhattan Skyline', also his duet of Otis Weddings 'Try a little Tenderness' live on stage with Tina Turner.
I implore you to view a live performance of this with a full orchestra, the one at the Proms (London) is mind blowing. Even if you don't review it again here, you MUST watch the proms. ruclips.net/video/3Nz7gtCArOw/видео.htmlfeature=shared

John sang on a few Alan Parsons songs
So glad you finally got to this! He's from my home town of Newcastle upon Tyne, England
Hi from fellow Geordie
@catherinebent7307 Hello from Sydney Australia
He was from Jarrow.
@@andylong6777 Uh-oh...
Wrong, born and brought up in Jarrow.
Honestly Bruv, this song pi**ed me off so much. A tune that steals from a hope, ex-girlfriend clingy. RUN!!!
It is 38 degrees here in Orangevale. 46 degrees in the day and at night 33 degrees. Meanwhile, Southern California burns...Crazy stuff!!!
'Highfly' Jay is a total banger
Absolutely love this song ❤ "Highfly " and "Slow Down" are another couple to check out. 👍
Love this song
Please do Steelheart- We All Die Young. Amazing vocal range. You will love it.
Great choice, Jay
I hope this leads you straight into his time with Tina Turner! Check out ‘Try A Little Tenderness’ with him and Tina from her 2000 Wembley concert. Then I highly suggest more Tina from this same concert, Nutbush, Proud Mary, Better Be Good To Me, We Don’t Need Another Hero. 💜🙏🏽
Yep, everyone should definitely should check out more Tina at Wembley. 😊
Great artist, saw him a couplw of times in the 80's, great gigs. Check out Stranger in the City, a great rock track.
