Yup, it's got everybody who was anybody in heavy music at the time.! I heard that Jimmy Page (and a couple others) had planned to participate, but it didn't work out.
When they got together to do USA For Africa, Band Aid, We Are The World, etc. They never invited any metal guys. So Jimmy Bain and Vivian Campbell from Dio came up with the Idea for a metal version. There’s also a behind the scenes documentary about the making of it. You need to watch it as it will have everybody’s names and band. There are also do e comedy bit with the spinal tap guys and a bunch of interviews with the stars.
@@michaelasay8587Hear 'n Aid was a charity record released in 1986. The record featured a supergroup of 40 heavy metal musicians on a track called "Stars". If you like metal/ hard rock, you should love Dio! Check out black Sabbath ( with Ronnie James Dio, and their album / Heaven and hell, the entire album is fantastic, but the title track is epic! It's all on RUclips! 😮
I saw an interview with Geoff Tate of Queensryche on his experience being on this song. Queensryche was fairly new at this time and he was honored to be asked by Dio to sing on it. But when he got there he saw all these legends and he got so nervous he had to wear his sunglasses so he couldn’t see them watching him from the sound booth.
AWESOME! So many of the reaction channels sleep on this one and miss the epic performances. I still have my VHS tape of this with the "Behind the scenes" footage and commentary. Ohh I'm so glad you did this song, so many of my favorite musicians here! For another metal star studded video you should check out Sam Kinison "Wild Thing" hehe 😊 Kinison was the teacher in "Back to School" that kept screaming at the students. Check out his song, I promise you'll be smiling so big.

When this came out, CD's were taking over most record stores and vinyl appeared to be on the way out, so I didn't but the LP. No worries, I had all those songs, but later learned many were either live versions or alternate mixes. The album was never officially released on CD in America. Bootleg CDs from other nations are all there is! Luckily, I LOVED this song so much that I bought the 12-inche single on vinyl, with full length song on side A, then the single edit & interviews on side B. Plus I got the 30-minute VHS video of the Hear 'N Aid project.
It's fun to listen to some of the guitarists describing how stressed they became by having Yngwie there, it made a lot of them trying to increase the speed in their playing. 😊
I can imagine, very few played as fast as Yngwie at that time, but after he got famous then everybody tried to play that fast. Nowdays there are many that can play that fast.
Glad you gave this a go. Awesome bunch of talent in one location for an awesome song. The charity was to help support victims of famine in Africa in late 80s.
Lineupwise, this is basically the Dio band with a whole heap of guest artists, so the bass you rightly dig so much is of course played by the late great Jimmy Bain 🙂
Yeah! Also keyboards by Claude Schnell from Dio and Vinny Appice from Dio was one of two drummer, Vivian Campbell one of many guitarplayers including soon to be Dio guitarplayer Craig Goldy.

According to George Lynch all of the guitarist at this session were terrified of of Yngwie Malmsteen. lol
Also, Yngwie was the reason Eddie started playing piano/keyboards more. He felt he had to add that extra dimension to stay ahead.
