    Great video, I love to see stuff that 99% of channels don't show, it's so great. I have a "why" question for you (thank you in advance): why did the first way you tried (with the solder) not work - or not work well enough...? What was the criterion that made you change the method? I LOVE to learn! Oops, one more question came to mind...when you decided to add metal for a prong (instead of building up solder as it seemed to be your first plan), why choose a small square (of sheet?) over a piece of square wire (or did you?) - some of the details aren't quite clear to my novice mind, so I shall ask!! And, if using a small square of sheet metal, is the height of the part of the prong that's missing, equal to the thickness of the sheet? And the other prongs, did you do the same? Thanks for bothering to answer my myriad questions, I imagine others appreciate your wisdom as do I. :))) Hmmm, that's more than 2 questions, so I send many thanks.

      Hello! Great to hear from you. I am glad to be back on the tube.
      First question: Why I switched to adding a piece of gold. There wasn't enough gold left at the top of the prong to safely add solder onto. If I had just built it up with solder it could break off from the solder becoming brittle from over heating. So I cut a piece of gold and added it. This would ensure that the prong would hold up during normal wear and tear.
      Second: The gold could be from a sheet or a stock. It doesn't really matter if it is square or round as long as it covers the diamond and the old prong. You just want to have a piece thick enough that it will match the other prongs and support the diamond in the mounting. Each time that I have done this process there are always going to be variables that will change. Most repairs will keep you on your toes so to speak. :)
      Good to hear from you, Hope this helps, Be sure to share with anyone you think it could help.
      All the best, Michael

    Thank you so much for this video! I hope you’re still on RUclips, I know this video was years ago. Question: I keep trying to make jump rings and prongs with white gold and they end up breaking… I am new to this, so sure I’m doing something wrong. Any advice?

    great video!! Thank you. The best chanell on youtube. Did you use the hard 14K? Also, that round bruah that you used for polishing. Is it the white neylon brush or regular bristle? thank you

      The brush was a soft bristle. Here is the number at Rio Grande #338348. The other was a cotton wheel Muslin buff #330707

    Hello Michael, I just saw this (very nice) tutorial and I would like to know which pumice wheel you used. The one that doesn't scratch the stones (too much). I couldn't find it on any list on your website and Rio Grande got so many kinds of them... Thank you for answering!

    One more question if you don't mind. I have noticed the wine cork floating in the ultrasonic. What is the trick? :))

    • @GotchaRocksJewelryDIY
      @GotchaRocksJewelryDIY  5 лет назад +2

      I use wine corks with plastic coated paper clip. I push the paper clip through the cork to make a hook to hang my rings on. It work great in the ultrasonic. Always uses the plastic covered paper clips otherwise it will scratch you jewelry during cleaning.

    I have an 18k white gold prong head that i tried soldering to the shank and silly me wasnt watching where my flames was hitting like i should have and one of the prongs melted down into a ball and another prong melted into the surrounding metal. Is there any fixing it? Or should i just melt it all down and start over? And because there was some solder melted onto it, would it be ruined and need to be refined? Sorry for all the questions.lol i truly appreciate your advice and am so grateful that you post videos sharing your knowledge and skills for the world to benefit from. Thank you so much!

    • @GotchaRocksJewelryDIY
      @GotchaRocksJewelryDIY  5 лет назад +1

      Bummer. I have had that happen. The short answer is get a new crown. However this does leave you with a opportunity to try to fix it. You can take your flat nose pliers and pinch it on the north south sides and then the east west sides. This will elongate the prong back to a normal looking prong. It's worth a try or practice. It usually works better if the prong is just a little melted. All the best Michael

      @@GotchaRocksJewelryDIY thank you so very much!! I tried it with one prong and ut definitely worked! Now to figure out what to do with the other that melted into the surrounding metal lol i think i might file it down a bit to create a spot to fix a piece of wire to mske a new prong. I truly appreciate your help and fast reply. And am so grateful for you sharing your skill and knowledge with us all. Its so wonderful to see craftsmanship and creating by hand. Although i have nothing against high tech jewelry manufacturing. It seems to be missing something that one can only appreciate with hand crafted jewellery. Anyhoo. Thank you again! I look forward to future videos and you have a forever subscriber:)

    Great information and delivery, but the music was so distracting I almost clicked away. Lots of great creators do this - the loud obnoxious music; does anyone know why? Is there a why?

    Is there a reason for bending your torch tip at such an angle? I know the little torch has a slight bend but yours seems to be a dramatic bend. It seems you are holding it somewhat similar to a hoke torch.

    • @GotchaRocksJewelryDIY
      @GotchaRocksJewelryDIY  5 лет назад

      Hello, I have been bending the tips like that for years. I find that it helps me to get into tight spots. I am always thinking in 90 degree and 45 degree angles when I am making things so that was something that worked for me. I also drill out some of my torch tips to get different types of flames. Thanks for the comment. All the best, Michael
