People do not give Arsenio the respect for the show. he had SO many musical guests that NOBODY else would have. He even wrote his theme as he has a music degree. Check out his interview from 1989 with Annie and dave; they had an impromptu acoustic performance with Arsenio sitting in the middle like a kid in the candy store
I cant believe this is live. Her pitch, tone, and control are spot on. When she switches between falsetto and full voice on the bridge, it sounds effortless. So talented!
The thing that I never noticed as a child or a teen in the late 80’s & early 90’s (cuz I was 12 years old when this album of hers dropped) is that she TRULY DOES FEEL what she sings. It’s not an “act”, despite her being so theatrical onstage. She REALLY FEELS THIS shit. Wow! 👏👏👏👏

Absolutely love the passion in her performance and how she can go from falsetto to deep almost effortlessly. Annie Lennox is a bloody gem in the music industry. Writes her own songs, puts 100% her performances and really *connects* to her music
Reasons why this version grooves so hard: bass guitar is tight and up front in mix, kick and snare are snappy, attack on strings is short, and tambourine is way up front, creating necessary "slop" to the groove. F&^*#$%n love this.
Thank you so much, this is why I read the comments. People adding their expertise enriches the RUclips experience. And I can hear this now... such a good version of a phenomenal song. Please keep doing it! Thank you:)
Awesome and dynamic artist. My sister in law, Cathy Sweeney, was one of the backup singers during this performance. Cathy has a fantastic voice too... But, yeah, Annie is totally bad ass.
It's so refreshing to see a great talent connect to their material like this. The dancing would probably be criticized today but it shows a fearlessness and authenticity missing in so many of today's airbrushed pop singers.
Annie was fantastic. a consummate performer and light years ahead of the time..she revolutionised the music industry and made people sit up and take notice
@Bagsy It's just an idiom, and I had a misspent youth as an astrophysicist :) The main point is she is an awesome artist, and lovely human being as far as I can tell, and she is arguably underrated.
I love this performance more than the music video for the same song! Annie Lennox is one of those rare artists with TRUE talent all the way around. She sounds just as great live as she does on a recording. She definitely doesn’t need auto-tune!
This song is a classic that has lasted the test of time and this woman is a legend in the music industry. And on a side note I have a you tube channel type in Russell Mills May 22, 2017 to find me.
Fantastic.. "Oh let the rain come down Let the wind blow through me I'm living in an empty room With all the windows smashed And I've got so little left to lose That it feels just like I'm walking on broken glass"
Oh, God, I adore her so much. A consumate singer and songwriter, an imaginative performance artist, a lovely person as far as one can tell, and starkly beautiful. Sigh. Sorry, my dear wife, thank you for understanding my fan crush.
Annie Lennox has a flare for the dramatic and I'm surprised, VERY surprised she hasn't starred in a movie of some kind. As for her remastered version of Whiter Shade, well 'I'm of the generation that was' when that song hit the charts. It was J Lennon's favorite song and the song provoked some kind of "let's get real about this" feeling, at least it did to me. As a once active musician myself, (drummer), I would have guessed that anyone who attempted to remaster that song would almost certainly fail. Especially if someone said they would remaster it to something that one could actually dance to! Well, how wrong I was, (though it wouldn't be the first time by any stretch of the imagination). A Lennox pulled it off and did it beautifully! I only wish she would have done it when I was still in my prime, dancing at the clubs (and searching for someone that I ultimately never found). The last song she did that was during that time in my life was "Walking on Broken Glass". I knew several people who didn't like that song and of course, they're opinion is their own. I personally, always like 'broken Glass' and back then, I never saw her M-video of the song. It's possible that those who didn't like Broken Glass were actually basing it on the video, which as the song details, was about a woman scorned and her complete loss of dignity and self-respect as she causes a huge scene in what appears to be some party taking place in the mid-17th or late18th century. I always noticed that those who didn't like the song were about 10 years younger than I was back then. I could see how the younger crowd may have felt some degree of embarrassment watching a grown woman melt down to such a vulnerable, resentful, and self-indulging mass. The video definitely got that across. I liked the interpretation when I finally did see the video, (which was only about two months ago!). I'm an amateur photographer and though I don't shoot people very often, Annie Lennox is one of those people that is incredibly photogenic! As soon as you see her, you see that her colors are in the 'hot zone'. Bright Reds, Oranges, extreme Pinks, all those colors that emphasize emotions in anger, edgy overreactions, even extreme violence. Her face sends that kind of message to me and that tends to block my ability to perceive how she really is as a person. I truly can't begin to guess that and I recall that I have always found this to be the case from the very first time I saw her with the band; The Eurythmics. Getting back to Whiter Shade; I tend to ignore the video of a song when I first hear it. The song should be able to stand on its own without any video addons. I see music as a separate entity and art form from manufactured images. I allow the music itself to paint the images in my own mind and that's how it has always been before "M TV" came along. Annie Lenox's version of this song was no exception to my rule and when I listened to it for the first time today, I minimized the video. I have a rather large home stereo system and fed the song from my computer to my amplifier. As I said earlier, she did a great job with the remastered version and I was thoroughly impressed. After it passed 'my listening test', I replayed it and watched the video. Like the music video to Annie's song "Walking on Broken Glass", the video for her interpretation of Whiter Shade was interesting, provoking and of course, crossed into the bizarre, (something I would expect from Lennox). Her voice is powerful and always has been, I like the way she applies it. I was around when the Eurythmics came out, and when 'solo- Annie-L' made the charts, I was there too. There's something about her that is scary and yet I have no idea what she's really like but she is worthy of her fame. Rich
After 32 years this song still amazing... Timeless Masterpiece...
No autotune, lip singing or crazy effects - just her and a microphone. I miss the 90s
They had all 3 things in the 90s.
@@AndyBluebear-fi9om But she's not using them. Shut up already.
Me too, man. Me too.
Annie never did anything halfway, she has always been 100% authentic and incredible.
One of the Greatest Vocalists ever to take the Stage.
All-day I agree with ya.
Cohen famous blu raincoat
Well said! Annie is a genuine legend, what a voice, live too!
Annie Lennox is one of those rare artists who sound just as wonderful singing live as they do on a recording. She doesn’t need auto-tune!
Yeah I agree
I would leave my wife, child and our four dogs on Christmas morning for Annie Lennox.
Fun fact: Annie Lennox was born on Christmas Day
People do not give Arsenio the respect for the show. he had SO many musical guests that NOBODY else would have. He even wrote his theme as he has a music degree. There ain't any late night talk show performances like this no more!
If I had to choose...even all these years later ...Arsenio is my favorite Late Night host.
She puts on a damn show. Live. Live people. She knows how to sing without autotune.
Toward the end of this, seeing her dance in front of the monitors, (just feeling it, not needing them,) is just…another level of vocalist.
She's such a bad ass.
I cant believe this is live. Her pitch, tone, and control are spot on. When she switches between falsetto and full voice on the bridge, it sounds effortless. So talented!
Classically trained singer
Back when music was actually music
I still want to be Annie Lennox when I grow up...
The fact she wasn't lip syncing already makes me respect her even more.
It’s a damn tragedy the Arsinio show was cancelled. That show really held its own at the time.

The way she sings those verses, falsettos awww...her voice is so expressive and she is milking every word. She is the best from the U.K. ever!!
I like her Gothic style! She is perfect !

This is the greatest thing ever. I can't stop smiling. Where should I send my money? Brilliant.
I have ❤️'d and been slightly Annie Lennox OBSESSED since I was 10 years old back in 1983 when I first heard her sing "Sweet Dreams." 😁
Beautiful! For some reason I find her extremely attractive
I find her scary lol
The reason you find her attractive is because she's hot as hell lol.
That's an amazing performance. Her vocals are something out of this world.
❤🎉 not to mention its live performance no digital shit they give us now
Outside of that voice.... No one has a right to be that goddam gorgeous.
That performance has the "WOW Factor".
Omg, are you kidding me. If I was fortunate enough to see Annie Lennox in person, my heart would probably stop.
😍🤩
HAS to be one of her best songs.
her voice has a strength few female performers are bold to try , low. Annie I love you for it .
She sounds like Lady Gaga
@@belladonna9818 both are contralto voices.
@@eduzz4655 That is very true!😉
Yeah ok
Edu Hernández lady gaga is a Mezzo soprano lol
I hope to someday have one tenth of the passion about something that Annie Lennox had during this one television performance.
She's extraordinary ❤️
She was a pistol in ‘92 much looovvveee
Awesome and dynamic artist. My sister in law, Cathy Sweeney, was one of the backup singers during this performance. Cathy has a fantastic voice too... But, yeah, Annie is totally bad ass.
Which backup singer is she?
"Hi, my name is Annie Lennox and I'll be your freestyle dance instructor."
Amazing voice!!! This is real talent!!!! New artist can’t sing without auto tune!!! This is raw talent!!!
The people who disliked this should walk barefoot on some broken glass
Lol. Love the comment. Sooooo underrated.
Viva Annie. Listen back to what she has done.
It's so refreshing to see a great talent connect to their material like this. The dancing would probably be criticized today but it shows a fearlessness and authenticity missing in so many of today's airbrushed pop singers.
She's not dancing at all. She's embodying the music in the moment. It's not scripted or choreographed.
Annie was fantastic. a consummate performer and light years ahead of the time..she revolutionised the music industry and made people sit up and take notice
Her dancing is great during this performance!
IS fantastic :)

Annie is a force of nature - sublime!
I love this performance more than the music video for the same song! Annie Lennox is one of those rare artists with TRUE talent all the way around. She sounds just as great live as she does on a recording. She definitely doesn’t need auto-tune!
Damn, nailed it live. A mark of true talent (and practice).

She did indeed nail this live performance. Such a great song and gifted singer/performer.
this gave me chills ....she is sooo cool !

She still sounds like that or even better in recent performances. White soul queen indeed! #Nostalgia #AnnieLennox #Diva #Bare

This is one of those things that even if you normally would hate it, it's so good that you have to like it.
Hey eyes are pretty mesmerizing. A babe back then and one today.

Wow!!! She sings the fire out of this. What an intense, superbly talent and performance.
A great entertainer for sure..❤🧡💛💙💜
