  • In the spring of 2014 “Untamed” debuted at the Backcountry Hunters & Anglers Rendezvous in Denver. Since then, it’s toured around the US and Canada with the Hunting Film Tour. It’s also touring with the Outdoor Film Tour & Festival and received the Pope and Young award for best bow hunting film. It has also been translated into French for showing at Arc Aventure, a French bow hunting film festival. Untamed is a film that reaches across historic divides by focusing on the innate biophilia that all humans experience, hunters and non-hunters alike. Today, I’m finally able to release it online.
Untamed is all traditional bow hunting but the story transcends the weapon. I’ve heard from all sorts of people ranging from non-hunters to hard core riflemen and all have had nothing but praise for the film. That’s something I never really expected. I think that’s because I’m very careful about not pushing my own views onto others. I know I do things different and the majority of hunters just don’t share my level of interest. But, I think all hunters would benefit by taking an honest hard look at why we hunt and what we’re really after. That’s something I think very few of us ever really do. This film, in a way, is my attempt to do just that and to show the world what I found. Enjoy the film and don't forget to share it.

Some people hunt not for sport or for trophies or ego, the true hunter respects the spirit of the animal and the forest, he understands that we are all part of the same circle, he does not seek glory or death but life.

absolutely, the animal should be respected not prized. In fact I find it hard myself to kill an animal, even a groundhog is hard for me to kill, most of the time I can't bring myself to pull the trigger.

    • @redjohn4886
      @redjohn4886 6 лет назад

but at least the result is the same if there was no reason to kill the animal. I also wanna try hunting but im in a conflict with myself to kill a animal.

    • @comesahorseman
      @comesahorseman 6 лет назад +6

red john: I respect your attitude, but consider that the animal cannot live forever. A clean death at the hands of a skilled hunter is better than a lingering death from old age, battle wounds, or lack of food. If you respect your prey & waste nothing, you have done your part. Take care.

I have put off watching this for quite some time. I feared it would be all about the kill. This is by far one of the best. You have transported this old fat man back into his beloved woods. My knees and back went South too many moons ago. My true love now is to teach young-uns traditional archery. And...to shoot.
Your philosophy is much the same as mine. The true thrill is in the hunt, not the kill. Harvest to eat, not to brag. One of my most memorable hunts was to move across a 50 yard meadow, up to a spike Mule, that had his head away from me into the wind. It took me 30 minutes, but, I stood 6 inches from his butt, and, then slowly returned to where I started. He never knew I was there. Shinin' times. Yessir.
I long for one more hunt
With my bow as my companion. Thank you for sparking good old memories. Thank you.

Thanks for a great movie. I have been shooting a bow for only a couple years but it has changed my life. My first bow was one I found in my garage. I believe it is a Ben Pearson long bow and because of financial restraints I even made my own strings for it. I now own a few bows but nothing will ever grab me like the one I put together myself. Thanks again. I do understand what your movie was about....I honestly wasn't sure if I was the only guy sho has spent so much time in the woods and have only harvested a few animals. Mostly small game. I only take a sure shot and they come few and hard fought. I wouldn't change it. Archery saved my soul. Your friend Scott

Had the bow set up at a pro shop. It performed just fine ruclips.net/user/postUgkxQEKUoxLWwayEDZR0NKB-5limn4MBU-2L . And I would say this is a good starting now that I could pass down to my son when he is older. But the package was missing the release and a nock was missing from one arrow.Dealing with customer support was terrible. They suggested I buy a new release rather than correct their own quality control issue because it’s to expensive for the. to ship it out from China.Update: manufacturer got back to me and resolved the issue. I retract the above statement.

Just bought a used 45# recurve to reintroduce myself to my childhood passion for archery. Went to a summer camp having never fired a bow, and came away with first place in the camp's archery competition. My dad set up a little range in the backyard with hay bales and bought me a little fiberglass bow to shoot with. I wasn't even in the 5th grade yet. Events happened and by the time I was 14, I was no longer hunting or shooting. Fast forward a decade later and now I think of all that time I could have been outdoors tracking, hunting, or just admiring wildlife. I got my new bow now and just came across this video through Backcountry Hunters and Anglers. Having watched this video, I'm even more inspired to continue reintroducing myself to these skills. Thank you!

Excellent video. 18 years ago, when I was getting into bow hunting and archery, I bought a compound from a pawn shop. About that same time I found the Bowyer's Bibles in my local library. Before I finished sighting in my compound I had finished a simple board bow. I have never finished sighting in my compound. I now hunt with a tri lam hybrid long bow that I made myself. Your message in this video is perfect. My most memorable hunt was being face to face with a large whitetail buck at 15 yards and not being able to draw. He ended up walking away I ended up with a huge grin plastered to my face for the rest of the day.

Clay I've been hunting for a long time from east to west and way way up north, I've always felt it but was never able to express my passion about hunting and the wilderness the way you have here. The importance of the hunt and the experience of connecting with our ancestry is far more relevant than the kill. Sadly a lot of hunters miss this part. Congratulations on producing without a doubt the greatest film I've viewed on the human experience in relation to the hunt. You did good here.

What a beautiful tribute you have created, Clay. To a form of hunting very uncommon in the modern efficient world, but which looks so rewarding even to the uninitiated like me, living in a country where fences are everywhere and hunting is done with rifles with scopes by fat men sitting on high seats, who may not even know how to field dress their kill. Thank you for bringing me within a few feet of those wonderful animals, for sharing your passion and the thrill of wild life with your hypnotic images. I´ve never seen anything like this film, and I think everyone should see it. What a fair way to bring the meat to your table. What an amazing life style. Thank you for all your amazing videos, but most of all, for this one!

Clay you are the epitome of traditional archery and bowhunting.
Outstanding work! A true labor of love! Keep the great videos coming.
The late Jay Massey said it best and it’s still holds true
    in today’s society but worse.
We live in a fast-paced, competitive society. In it, success is
measured mostly in materialistic terms - not in such values as personal growth
and self-satisfaction. Satisfaction, most believe, is to be found sitting
astraddle a buck deer, no matter what methods are used to get there - and
certainly not from stalking through the woods with your handcrafted traditional
bow. Many American archers have not been informed of the differences between
quality bowhunting and taking the easy way out. And there are easier ways to
bowhunting success these days than using the methods of Ishi and Pope and
    Young!
Greed and laziness, however, is not without its price.
    Traditional Only Brother!
    Lone Wolf Van

There is nothing like that stalk you make trying outwit your quarry , reading the wind hoping it doesn’t change , placing each foot carefully and quietly as possible planning out where either you or your target needs to be to get that perfect humane shot, that’s why I am addicted to traditional archery hunting!!

My peace of mind is in the woods whether i just watch an animal walk by or harvest one to put food on the table. Been watching your videos for the past week. Well done! It was like listening to a validation of what I teach as a hunter education instructor and at the seminar which I co-teach to Beginning Hunters. I hunt traditionally with a flintlock in a period clothing of the 18th Century. I prefer getting up close and personal and hunt from the ground, utilizing hunting skills to become one with the woods and invisible. I recently had a hickory long bow made and the arrows are fletched with the jake turkey I shoot at less than 15 feet. It is believed to be the first turkey killed in my county since the early 1800s with a flintlock. Thanks for reaching even more people to share it is not the killing but the whole experience of making the gear, the practicing, the preparation, being in the woods, seeing what is out there to enjoy and reflect on.

Wow what a breathtaking video. Thank you for taking the time and effort to share this.
I started hunting 3 years ago with a shotgun and rifle. Two years ago I switched to a compound bow and never looked back. I felt that bow hunting really was the essence of why I hunt. For me it's about integrating into the world around you and being forced to learn more, be patient and often accept that you do not always get to harvest but you have to be subject yourself to the will of nature.
Today I am taking one further step in that journey. I am going to step down (or up) to a recurve bow. No more mechanical arts, sights, or cams. Having seen your video I now have a way to explain why I made my choice to my hunting and non hunting friends.
Thanks so much for a great video.

this. this is what i'm looking to do. I dont want the sights, the stabalizers, the high tech scopes and viewfinders. Just a couple sticks and nature.

As a European city guy, my meat comes from the supermarket, sometimes from a butchery, but (as I happen to be into archery) I sooo get this! Don't think I would have said this 20 years ago but: Beautiful film.

I’m not a hunter, but I’ve thought about it-and I would definitely use my bare bow. Your video captures what I think hunting should be. Bravo. Great video.

Great filming and narrative, but above all you capture something of the call of the wild or as you point out the draw of a campfire, that is simply irresistible to some of us.

The narrative at the beginning of this video is perfect. You successfully found a way to verbalize the passion I have for hunting and traditional archery. Keep up the great work. I love these videos. I've shared them and subscribed. Thank you.

Awesome video Clay. I am a riffle hunter ... I hunted all my life in Canada since I am kid and I am now in my late 40's. I do understand everything you are exposing about hunting in that video. Great thing you came with here. I recently reached a stage of my life where I need new challenges and skills: Archery I found. Big fan of you channel. Keep the good work buddy.

beautifully done, very much enjoyed, as one who makes and uses his own bows for fun and hunting
i can relate to that satisfaction you receive from start to finish when making your bow, to walking through the
woods with it in hand is just hard to explain

Clay, I've started building my own self bows, and have found a great community in the primitive archery world. I'm happy to find others like yourself, who understand the desire to build your weapons, and earn your food.
This video has what's missing in the "hunting shows" that are typically found on cable TV.
Well done brother, and thank you for sharing your knowledge!!

Hi Clay, I enjoyed your book and really love this movie. I have been traditional bow hunting for 2 years now in a little patch of woods in North Carolina and I am just now starting to explore what others are doing that share my same passion. Your expressiveness in what you do is great for all hunters, nature and wildlife enthusiasts. You brought something to the world that is one of a kind. Great Job and thank you for your inspiration!

This is so very awesome, you have captured why I go with traditional equipment. Now I want to build a bow.Incredibly well done, in a crazy technology driven world it is the simplicity of archery, an ancient weapon thatmatters. Wow.

After hunting with my longbow for some time, I tried a recurve crossbow yes it's more accurate... Yes it's easier to make arrows for... But I was always drawn back to my longbow. Even though I miss more I have no desire to launch arrows in any other way. there is really something different about being out with a bow, it becomes a spiritual experience. There is no better way to hunt.
