Untamed - a Traditional Bow hunting Film by Clay Hayes

- In the spring of 2014 “Untamed” debuted at the Backcountry Hunters & Anglers Rendezvous in Denver. Since then, it’s toured around the US and Canada with the Hunting Film Tour. It’s also touring with the Outdoor Film Tour & Festival and received the Pope and Young award for best bow hunting film. It has also been translated into French for showing at Arc Aventure, a French bow hunting film festival. Untamed is a film that reaches across historic divides by focusing on the innate biophilia that all humans experience, hunters and non-hunters alike. Today, I’m finally able to release it online.
Untamed is all traditional bow hunting but the story transcends the weapon. I’ve heard from all sorts of people ranging from non-hunters to hard core riflemen and all have had nothing but praise for the film. That’s something I never really expected. I think that’s because I’m very careful about not pushing my own views onto others. I know I do things different and the majority of hunters just don’t share my level of interest. But, I think all hunters would benefit by taking an honest hard look at why we hunt and what we’re really after. That’s something I think very few of us ever really do. This film, in a way, is my attempt to do just that and to show the world what I found. Enjoy the film and don't forget to share it.
Some people hunt not for sport or for trophies or ego, the true hunter respects the spirit of the animal and the forest, he understands that we are all part of the same circle, he does not seek glory or death but life.
great video
+Avyn Taylor Thanks Avyn
+Avyn Taylor Couldn't have said better myself brother....
absolutely, the animal should be respected not prized. In fact I find it hard myself to kill an animal, even a groundhog is hard for me to kill, most of the time I can't bring myself to pull the trigger.
but at least the result is the same if there was no reason to kill the animal. I also wanna try hunting but im in a conflict with myself to kill a animal.
red john: I respect your attitude, but consider that the animal cannot live forever. A clean death at the hands of a skilled hunter is better than a lingering death from old age, battle wounds, or lack of food. If you respect your prey & waste nothing, you have done your part. Take care.
A beautiful video. You're a great ambassador for the hunting community.
***** Thank you Jesse
bowhunter 85 a lot of guys moving from compound will pick up a recurve. Longbows may take a little more time to master but either are good fun and plenty effective.
+Clay Hayes Amazing video! What is the bottled powder you spray on the trees at 5:10, and what is it for? baking soda?
+Clay Hayes Just sent this Vid to my compound friends, who always tell me wood bows are ineffective today!
iwmsan1 that is a windicator which is used for wind direction.
I have put off watching this for quite some time. I feared it would be all about the kill. This is by far one of the best. You have transported this old fat man back into his beloved woods. My knees and back went South too many moons ago. My true love now is to teach young-uns traditional archery. And...to shoot.
Your philosophy is much the same as mine. The true thrill is in the hunt, not the kill. Harvest to eat, not to brag. One of my most memorable hunts was to move across a 50 yard meadow, up to a spike Mule, that had his head away from me into the wind. It took me 30 minutes, but, I stood 6 inches from his butt, and, then slowly returned to where I started. He never knew I was there. Shinin' times. Yessir.
I long for one more hunt
With my bow as my companion. Thank you for sparking good old memories. Thank you.
Thanks for a great movie. I have been shooting a bow for only a couple years but it has changed my life. My first bow was one I found in my garage. I believe it is a Ben Pearson long bow and because of financial restraints I even made my own strings for it. I now own a few bows but nothing will ever grab me like the one I put together myself. Thanks again. I do understand what your movie was about....I honestly wasn't sure if I was the only guy sho has spent so much time in the woods and have only harvested a few animals. Mostly small game. I only take a sure shot and they come few and hard fought. I wouldn't change it. Archery saved my soul. Your friend Scott
+Scott M Thanks Scott, I'm glad you liked the film and share the love of archery.
Had the bow set up at a pro shop. It performed just fine ruclips.net/user/postUgkxQEKUoxLWwayEDZR0NKB-5limn4MBU-2L . And I would say this is a good starting now that I could pass down to my son when he is older. But the package was missing the release and a nock was missing from one arrow.Dealing with customer support was terrible. They suggested I buy a new release rather than correct their own quality control issue because it’s to expensive for the. to ship it out from China.Update: manufacturer got back to me and resolved the issue. I retract the above statement.
Clay you are wise beyond your years, I can wake up at 4:00 am as I do everyday feeling distraught about life and what I'm doing in it. But then I watch one of your videos and it all comes back and I know again what I love . Even if the video is a simple bow set up, and yes I so watch them over and over. Thank you for your videos. Please don't stop.
Thanks Dana. When I get to feeling like that, I read a letter from Seneca. Check out The Tao of Seneca. It’s a free pdf online. Stoic philosophy at its finest!
Absolut stunning. By far one of the best bow hunting videos on the web. Your words speak right to my soul.
+Henning Radasewski thanks
Just bought a used 45# recurve to reintroduce myself to my childhood passion for archery. Went to a summer camp having never fired a bow, and came away with first place in the camp's archery competition. My dad set up a little range in the backyard with hay bales and bought me a little fiberglass bow to shoot with. I wasn't even in the 5th grade yet. Events happened and by the time I was 14, I was no longer hunting or shooting. Fast forward a decade later and now I think of all that time I could have been outdoors tracking, hunting, or just admiring wildlife. I got my new bow now and just came across this video through Backcountry Hunters and Anglers. Having watched this video, I'm even more inspired to continue reintroducing myself to these skills. Thank you!
+Martin Axe Thank you Martin, I'm glad you're getting back into it. There's a lot of good info on the BHA site as well.
I re watch this with my sons every couple years . Clay truly captures my core values in this video.
Many thanks
One of the best videos on RUclips, period.
+Traditional American Hunter much appreciated.
Excellent video. 18 years ago, when I was getting into bow hunting and archery, I bought a compound from a pawn shop. About that same time I found the Bowyer's Bibles in my local library. Before I finished sighting in my compound I had finished a simple board bow. I have never finished sighting in my compound. I now hunt with a tri lam hybrid long bow that I made myself. Your message in this video is perfect. My most memorable hunt was being face to face with a large whitetail buck at 15 yards and not being able to draw. He ended up walking away I ended up with a huge grin plastered to my face for the rest of the day.
+BaronvonSmoogle thanks
The best hunting film on youtube ! So inspirational ! showing what its all about and your natural way of living and the meaning of self-reliance . Cheers from Sweden !!!
+sstteevvwee thank you
Clay I've been hunting for a long time from east to west and way way up north, I've always felt it but was never able to express my passion about hunting and the wilderness the way you have here. The importance of the hunt and the experience of connecting with our ancestry is far more relevant than the kill. Sadly a lot of hunters miss this part. Congratulations on producing without a doubt the greatest film I've viewed on the human experience in relation to the hunt. You did good here.
+Roger Pilon Thanks Roger, I appreciate that. ch
This is a piece of art, mate. Great video. Thank you.
What a beautiful tribute you have created, Clay. To a form of hunting very uncommon in the modern efficient world, but which looks so rewarding even to the uninitiated like me, living in a country where fences are everywhere and hunting is done with rifles with scopes by fat men sitting on high seats, who may not even know how to field dress their kill. Thank you for bringing me within a few feet of those wonderful animals, for sharing your passion and the thrill of wild life with your hypnotic images. I´ve never seen anything like this film, and I think everyone should see it. What a fair way to bring the meat to your table. What an amazing life style. Thank you for all your amazing videos, but most of all, for this one!
Wow. What an incredible video! This answers so many questions to the "why" of hunting. Incredibly well done!
Thanks Luke
Clay you are the epitome of traditional archery and bowhunting.
Outstanding work! A true labor of love! Keep the great videos coming.
The late Jay Massey said it best and it’s still holds true
in today’s society but worse.
We live in a fast-paced, competitive society. In it, success is
measured mostly in materialistic terms - not in such values as personal growth
and self-satisfaction. Satisfaction, most believe, is to be found sitting
astraddle a buck deer, no matter what methods are used to get there - and
certainly not from stalking through the woods with your handcrafted traditional
bow. Many American archers have not been informed of the differences between
quality bowhunting and taking the easy way out. And there are easier ways to
bowhunting success these days than using the methods of Ishi and Pope and
Young!
Greed and laziness, however, is not without its price.
Traditional Only Brother!
Lone Wolf Van
+Lone Wolf Natureworks Thanks Van
+Clay Hayes You're Most Welcome!
There is nothing like that stalk you make trying outwit your quarry , reading the wind hoping it doesn’t change , placing each foot carefully and quietly as possible planning out where either you or your target needs to be to get that perfect humane shot, that’s why I am addicted to traditional archery hunting!!
I don’t know how many times I’ve watched this in the last 5 or 6 years, but it’s still my favorite hunting film I’ve ever seen
Many thanks
Way to go Clay! You have hit the essence of Hunting! Proud to be one of you Brother! Always a spot for you at my campfire.
meatCKR I appreciate that.
I dont comment often on anything. Thank you for this, I really loved it on all the levels touched. Blessings on your passion and work.
Thanks Andrea!
So glad found more of your old videos, they are truly a cinematic event , artfully compiled to stir desires to get outdoors
Glad you like them! This is my favorite
I watch this often. One of the best I've seen. Good job!
I wish I had a counter on how many times me and my 3 year old have watched this. Its has been a go to video to watch. We thoroughly enjoy every minute of it. Keep up the great videos they have inspired many.
thanks much!
Clay love this video. Everything i have heard and been brought up hunting is these values. My peace of mind is in the woods whether i just watch an animal walk by or harvest one to put food on the table. Been watching your videos for the past week. All started cause i shot a longbow at cabelas and fell in love with it. Looking to get that bow and a bear recurve then build my own bow. Getting back to my ancestral roots has never felt better. Thank you for everything you do for the archery community.
This may very well be the best video I've seen on RUclips. That was 16 minutes and 43 seconds well spent. As a fellow youtuber, I thank you for the video inspiration. As a hunter, I simply say, thank you!!
Thanks man!
i agree
yep, i found you when i started shooting my bow, then was amazed by the way u approached hunting.
a while ago i was catching up with the push podcast and figured out that u are also a biologist.
i am not surprised about your approach anymore and i have to say you are an amazing father/hunter and i love to check out your videos and im not even a hunter.
greetings from germany and all the best to you and your family
Many thanks
Well done and thank you. You speak for all of us, and this film captures the rewards that come with commitment and engagement with our sport.
Thanks
Well done Clay - Not a hunter but appreciate the traditional bows and those that use them are true modern pioneers that appreciate the challenge and reward. :)
Thanks Warren
There is many out there that will never have that feeling of a cold front moving in or the feeling of your hart beating in your throat as a record bull just walks away from ya like you weren't even there. But to us that have felt that you Sir have caught that feeling in this video and we look forward to the tomorrow. God bless you and your family.
+BrewGuy Mike Thanks BrewGuy
Hi Clay super video. Never let it be said that an older man can't learn something from a younger man. Watching your videos I have learned alot and will pass this on to my grandson.
Thank you sir job well done.
Ed Matthews Thanks Ed
Absolutely profound! Very well done! Simple, quiet, beautiful!!
WAGONJON Thanks much
Well done! It was like listening to a validation of what I teach as a hunter education instructor and at the seminar which I co-teach to Beginning Hunters. I hunt traditionally with a flintlock in a period clothing of the 18th Century. I prefer getting up close and personal and hunt from the ground, utilizing hunting skills to become one with the woods and invisible. I recently had a hickory long bow made and the arrows are fletched with the jake turkey I shoot at less than 15 feet. It is believed to be the first turkey killed in my county since the early 1800s with a flintlock. Thanks for reaching even more people to share it is not the killing but the whole experience of making the gear, the practicing, the preparation, being in the woods, seeing what is out there to enjoy and reflect on.
Glad you enjoyed it Mark
I love to hunt traditional. It is the best feeling to just get to nature and in that moment just breathe the air and enjoy just being there. Will be sharing this video for sure and thanks for doing this. It was awesome to see someone who appreciates this as much as me.
Thanks Joshua.
This is a well made short film that did a great job of showing those of us crammed in cities (NYC in my case) the allure of "real" hunting. This is how it was done all over the world (Asia to North America) by all kinds of people for thousands of years. Requires real true skill, spirit and grit. Props and keep at it!
+Jay Choi thanks Jay
Dude, this was the best thing ever! So inspiring! Definitely sharing everywhere! You got me all amped up for this winter now! God bless and have good one man!
i had the same reaction, 9 days till bow season opens where i live
Lucky for you. I won't get to hunt archery season but pigs are all year and I'll hunt small game season :)
Primitive Tim Thanks Tim, get after some of those hogs down there.
Clay Hayes I regret not looking you up when I was in Idaho in June. I plan to get after some pigs on my way home this fall in Texas and Georgia and of course I'll chase em all winter in Florida. Good luck this season!
Couldn't agree with you more! Truly awesome indeed and this is an understatement.
You nailed it with this video. Hunting is time in the woods. If you see an animal - that is a bonus. If you harvest an animal - that is a bonus. Enjoy the time in the woods.
Scott
Thanks
@@clayhayeshunter While I don't make my own archery equipment, you have inspired me to start hunting with my longbow instead of my compound.
Very cool! Have fun!
Very well done!
To take an animal with a bow you built yourself is an amazing accomplishment today. You do it with the right attitude. Thank you for sharing!
clay I have to admit that this video is one of the most profound on youtube. I’ve been dealing with traditional archery for some time now and your videos helped me a lot, but this one makes me think about dealing with that kind of hunting, which let me tell you I never though of it before. Thank you
Thanks, I’m glad you like it.
I have been making hunting videos for a while now but after watching that I recon I have a long way to go. Subscribed and liked brother and I don't do that very often .
+Clay Tall Stories Much appreciated Clay
I have been a TradGang troll for quite some time and I just tripped across your latest post and it lead me here. WOW!! This is an excellent film. I don't think one could ever find the true meaning, it has always been a very deep personal thing for Me. I gave up hunting with the Modern equipment a very long time ago for the very same reasons stated in this Great film.
+Traditional Archer Thank you, I'm glad you liked it!
Wow what a breathtaking video. Thank you for taking the time and effort to share this.
I started hunting 3 years ago with a shotgun and rifle. Two years ago I switched to a compound bow and never looked back. I felt that bow hunting really was the essence of why I hunt. For me it's about integrating into the world around you and being forced to learn more, be patient and often accept that you do not always get to harvest but you have to be subject yourself to the will of nature.
Today I am taking one further step in that journey. I am going to step down (or up) to a recurve bow. No more mechanical arts, sights, or cams. Having seen your video I now have a way to explain why I made my choice to my hunting and non hunting friends.
Thanks so much for a great video.
+Jason Carter That's great Jason, thanks for the note. ch
Man, this is one of the most beautiful traditional bowhunting videos I have never seen....belive me, I saw a lot of them. The love you feell about traditional archery is evident. I´m an artist and traditional archer for most than 30 years. I just feell a lot of respect for your work. Congratulations. We (the people who´s can´t use public lands for bowhunting) can dream and imagine thousands of possible histories shooting our traditional bows with your video.
Thank´s a lot for sharing with us.
Good work!!! Salutes from Mexico. If you make another video, PLEASE tell us!!!
MexArcher Thanks. Don't forget to subscribe if you want to be notified of future videos. You can also visit www.twistedstave.com to sign up for the mailing list.
You just hit a very personal and down to earth note that is very uncommon today. Beautiful.
Clay, this was an exceptional film. Hands down the finest hunting film I have ever watched, period. You speak like a true statesman and ambassador for traditional bowhunting and I appreciate the work you've done to bring this to all of us. Cheers.
Ben Klein Thank you Ben.
This is one of the best videos I have seen in a very long time!!! Great work!
parkerbrothers75 thanks
Some days you just come across a real gem on the internet. This was one of them. Wish more videos were like this. So sick of seeing nothing but trophy hunt videos. I liked it so much I ordered your book of your website. Can hardly wait to read it.
+MrConkee Thank you, I'm glad you liked it.
You are one of the best speakers on what hunting is about. I think non-hunters and anti-hunters would learn alot from you. I'm putting the rifle down and bow hunting for the first time this year with an old Bear Recurve I found in my dad's attic, your videos have me pumped.
good luck
good luck
An Amazing Video!! Very well made and very well said. By far the best video I have seen. Thank you for sharing!! It's easy to see how much work and effort you put into it. Thanks again!
Great to see that much passion and discipline. Also good to see absolutely no meet wasted. Nice job on that bow. It is beautiful.
+John Smith thank you
Greatest video I’ve seen in quite some time. Excellent way of expressing and explaining what some of us feel. Thanks Clay
Billy Jack
Glad you enjoyed it
Man you just made my Day!! Im glad to know that there are others that cherish hunting for what it really is. Thanks Bud.
HighCountryTimber1 Thanks HighCountry
Yeah Man! Thank you
Clay
Excellent video.........myself have been hunting with archery gear about. 50 years. Well said!
Great video, Clay. I don't know you, but saw this shared on another friend's timeline on FB. I was inspired, enough so to share it with a couple of the large hunting groups on FB. Thanks for your effort, and the message.
thank you for making this video, its excellent. After watching I went and got my sons to sit and watch it with me, which is better than a standing ovation. I will share this with family and friends, and look forward viewing more of your post. thank you again
+TheBowhunterinNB thank you
You are the most amazing, well-rounded guy I've ever met, and love what you do for us! Hunters and outdoors men...and women and kids.
I love where you live and your passion that you carry over into all you do--so well!
+OregonPackworksLLC Thanks so much. I really appreciate that.
Amazing! Thank you, Clay! My 12-year-old twins and I are feeling inspired.. They are determined to hunt with traditional gear and you are now their #1 role model...
Thanks Cedar! I’m glad you all liked the film.
Standing and clap, clap, clap! That is an awesome piece of work! Loved the Bear scene most! That's close, and ya never scared him off!
+Jeff Coxen Thanks Jeff, stalking that bear was a lot of fun.
The second you step into the woods and the wild country you are successful. That where the magic of the hunt is. It's the return to the old ways of life. Magical connection to ancestral history. And the lost connection to earth even if it is just for that short time
Can't believe this video was uploaded 8 years ago this video feels like it was made just today
Amazing ❤❤
Quality video never gets old
Thank you so much 😀
That was a first class watch clay thank you. An old saying comes to mind it's not the kill it's the thrill of the chase. Hi from the uk
Thanks
May it’s a longing for that thing we know we have lost.. the connection to our past, our ancestors lived this way and knew no other.
Well done! A real pleasure to watch! You've triggered some great memories of the wild! 😃
this. this is what i'm looking to do. I dont want the sights, the stabalizers, the high tech scopes and viewfinders. Just a couple sticks and nature.
go for it
As a European city guy, my meat comes from the supermarket, sometimes from a butchery, but (as I happen to be into archery) I sooo get this! Don't think I would have said this 20 years ago but: Beautiful film.
Thank you!
I've nowhere near your experience, yet these are exactly my sentiments as well, and also what I aspire to. Thank you so much for sharing your experience through these videos.
You're welcome Jonathan.
Ive watched this a few times, there ain't nothin like it anywhere else and damn it you've done a great job sir.
+Johnn Sinky Thanks Johnn
I’m not a hunter, but I’ve thought about it-and I would definitely use my bare bow. Your video captures what I think hunting should be. Bravo. Great video.
Thanks
Great filming and narrative, but above all you capture something of the call of the wild or as you point out the draw of a campfire, that is simply irresistible to some of us.
The narrative at the beginning of this video is perfect. You successfully found a way to verbalize the passion I have for hunting and traditional archery. Keep up the great work. I love these videos. I've shared them and subscribed. Thank you.
+Adam Aghion thanks Adam!
Awesome video Clay. I am a riffle hunter ... I hunted all my life in Canada since I am kid and I am now in my late 40's. I do understand everything you are exposing about hunting in that video. Great thing you came with here. I recently reached a stage of my life where I need new challenges and skills: Archery I found. Big fan of you channel. Keep the good work buddy.
Thanks much
beautifully done, very much enjoyed, as one who makes and uses his own bows for fun and hunting
i can relate to that satisfaction you receive from start to finish when making your bow, to walking through the
woods with it in hand is just hard to explain
yes it is, thanks.
as a guy who hunts with a trad bow it great to find people who gets it, great video!
+David Corazzini thanks
Clay, I've started building my own self bows, and have found a great community in the primitive archery world. I'm happy to find others like yourself, who understand the desire to build your weapons, and earn your food.
This video has what's missing in the "hunting shows" that are typically found on cable TV.
Well done brother, and thank you for sharing your knowledge!!
Ed Muranyi
Edward Muranyi Thank you Ed. There really is something to be said about the trad/primitive archery community.
well said... Your thoughts about the nature and human instincts, and your approach to hunting shows great respect for the animals, an example for many others to follow. I think even people who do not like hunting respects your vision after watching this film.
Incredible work with that film!
All the best,
Odd
***** Thanks, I've heard from quite a few non-hunters that have really enjoyed the film.
Hi Clay, I enjoyed your book and really love this movie. I have been traditional bow hunting for 2 years now in a little patch of woods in North Carolina and I am just now starting to explore what others are doing that share my same passion. Your expressiveness in what you do is great for all hunters, nature and wildlife enthusiasts. You brought something to the world that is one of a kind. Great Job and thank you for your inspiration!
Thanks +jason lynch
This is so very awesome, you have captured why I go with traditional equipment. Now I want to build a bow.Incredibly well done, in a crazy technology driven world it is the simplicity of archery, an ancient weapon thatmatters. Wow.
+Springer Spaniel thank you
you had a "movie" and you only have 16k subs? you deserve more, 10/10 quality
Growing by the day Ryan, thanks and help spread the word man!
Hi Clay,
this is a beautifull film, that tells what it`s all about. To my opinion, it is a magnifficant peace of art, that touchs my soul. - And I love you, for letting that bear, go on!
Nice to meet you!
Greetings from Germany
Hans
What an amazing celebration of your hunting journey and it is refreshing to see the respect you hold for the animal and the exchange of power and teaching between hunter and prey.
thanks
You Sir, are a multi talented man.
May God continue bless you and your family.
I think it's crazy how you created a weapon and arrows then feed yourself using those tools... Amazing video!!
Dwanny67 We've done it for 10,000 years!
Truer words have never been spoken. A truely amazing video, and the message really speaks to ones soul. Great job Clay!
The Rambler Thanks Rambler
Great video. you describe bowhunting exactly what I feel about hunting. thats why rifle hunting is never an option for me. Thank you.
you're welcome
Your videos have changed my mind about everything I believed to be true about deer hunting. Thank you.
+Robert Moore you're welcome
After hunting with my longbow for some time, I tried a recurve crossbow yes it's more accurate... Yes it's easier to make arrows for... But I was always drawn back to my longbow. Even though I miss more I have no desire to launch arrows in any other way. there is really something different about being out with a bow, it becomes a spiritual experience. There is no better way to hunt.
man, you put into words things I never can. Thank you very much.
Man this is exaclty how i feel about hunting and my time outdoors. Masterpiece!
thank you
Wow! The Bear! Fantastic movie! Well done sir!
Mighty fine Clay. Mighty fine. Many thanks.
+Tom Panetti Thanks Tom
Very well done. Great commentary, and amazing footage. I feel energized watching this piece! Another great piece of work, Clay -
+S3 Archery much appreciated.
Amazing job on the film! It must have taken weeks and months to get some of those shots. Very well done sir!
ha, I collected footage for this for several years! I'm more efficient now.
Love your videos! From the bow building, arrow building, to the hunts!
Thanks
seriously... what an amazing piece of art! The videography, the "hardware", the dialogue !!!
Can I come make bows with you!! just kidding (kinda).
Everyone should watch this!! .... sharing with everyone that I can!
much appreciated. ch
I agree taking game with a bow you made is the ultimate feeling. Something I’ve always wanted to do.
Incredible work Clay!
DIY Sportsman Thanks
Absolutely Stunning... I nearly had tears in my eyes.
+Nicholas Wingler Thanks Nicholas, that's not the first time I've heard that.
+Clay Hayes I'm sure you have heard that before, it's so amazing!
that's one beauty of a film,I did not see yet. fully agreed with your spirit. love it !
Thanks 😊
Going to watch a few more of these inspiring films of yours. Much appreciated Clay.
thanks tony
Book ordered. Fantastic films. I have been following you for a while and I figured I need to read the book. Thanks for the video man.
Thanks
