  • SpaceX first received FCC approval for two new dish designs in September 2023, but that approval was only for fixed-location use since the FCC did not approve Starlink's request for in-motion use.
One of the new designs, the Standard Gen 3 dish, was released in late 2023, and the other, which has not yet been released, is called the "Mini Dish," which promises to be much smaller and portable, making it easy to travel with.
SpaceX's application for in-motion use for both of these new dishes was delayed, likely due to objections from competitors. Now that their approval has come through, users have even more choices to stay connected while in motion.

I just bought the Gen 3 hoping that we would be able to use it in-motion for the long-term, so this is wonderful news!

I sure hope I can add the mini dish to my existing plan and not need a new separate plan.

Until they release the dish, and any new plan options - it's anyone's guess as to what the options will be.

he didnt discuss the rate increases either, starlink gets you hooked and keeps raising prices, I kept my KVH system just for that reason

The only recent rate change was Mobile Global that recently doubled in price and we have a separate story/video on that one (ruclips.net/video/kDRdKEvbkf4/видео.html). This video is about the FCC certification on the dishes.
The Mobile Regional and Mobile Priority prices haven't changed prices recently - those are the most popular plans with our US based audience.
Of course Starlink is a no contract company so they are free to set their prices as they see fit and they have thrown some surprises out there from time to time.
      Thanks for your comment!

There are a lot of people hoping the new Mini Dish is 12v powered and since it's already been teased by Elon to be small and portable and could be carried in a backpack, it would seem like a huge oversight to not make it 12v powered from the start.
We won't know for sure until the Mini is released, but we will certainly cover all technical aspects of it when it is released.
The other possibility for 12v power is with the Gen 3 system. Currently it is only 120v powered, however the Gen 3 system uses a separate power supply that plugs into the Gen 3 router and then powers the Gen 3 dish over POE. This separate power supply uses a DC barrel plug to power the router so essentially the power supply is doing the switching from AC to DC power.
So it could be feasible that Starlink could release a different 12v power supply for the Gen 3 Dish at some point that would allow it to be 12v powered. Again we'll just have to wait to see if that happens.
