    Two things:
    (1) I saw in a previous video you used a super long TB3 cable. That kills performance thanks to latency and signal loss.
    (2) Please test Radeon vs Nvidia on an eGPU. I'd like to see which manufacturer's video cards work better

    Finally this video! Thanks for making it. I'm curious, if it were to be a lower resolution; let's say 1080p or 1440p resolution at max, the frame rate of the 3080 should in theory be a significant boost in comparison of the 2070 Max q, or it would give the same performance?
    The new Asus Flow looks to be the best way to use external GPU's soo it would certainly be interesting!

    Thanks so much for posting this. My wife doesn't like to use a desktop system but would like to game more when she has time, so I got her an Aorus 3080 Gaming Box. Sadly, it ended up being defective and wouldn't connect properly with her laptop (I spent a few days doing everything from updating all of the firmware, BIOS, doing clean driver installs, etc. to no avail). It actually did work for a few moments but only for 10 minutes or so before finally dying altogether (would no longer power on). It's just nice to see what it might have looked like with those games, especially The Witcher 3 (she wanted to play it on her laptop). Also sad to hear that you had to go through a bunch of troubleshooting as well. Perhaps gaming on her laptop isn't in the cards. At least until I get her a new one that is more gaming focused, or there are actually easy to use plug and play options for eGPUs that won't require so much troubleshooting.

    For DOOM Eternal, it's important to note that the game uses about 9GB of VRAM when set to Ultra Nightmare at 4K (Steve from Hardware Unboxed has found this in his testing), so you get a massive performance hit with 8GB cards. If you lower the textures to Ultra, the VRAM usage goes down to 7GB and the performance gap closes considerably. I would expect the 2070 mobile and 3080 on laptop screen to be near identical in this scenario.

    Recommending an eGPU or not comes down to use case. For instance, I have a gaming rig for my desktop and a gaming rig for my TV. I have no need for an eGPU _except_ that I do. I don't yet have a Steam Deck, and sometimes I like to play games on my Surface Pro 8. This devices has a 2880x1920 display, and I'd like to be able to turn up settings. Even if the games are low-end, the Intel Integrated GPU sucks. Using something like an eGPU when I'm gaming a bit in bed is an excellent addition. I don't need a 3080, my old 1080 Ti (or any other older GPU) is going to be plenty for the types of games I'm running. Best thing is I can still use the built-in display with touch! That's a great solution to my problem!

  • @AdriMul
    @AdriMul 3 года назад +14

    Thanks for the good work. Please all bear in mind that this laptop has a Comet Lake-H CPU and hence has no in-CPU Thunderbolt implementation so it is prone to severely bottlenecking an expensive eGPU like it does here. This is due to the data flow going through the motherboard chipset first and thus having to compete with other things like storage or wifi. Ice Lake-U processors however have an embedded Thunderbolt controller, which means the eGPU is pretty much directly connected to CPU PCI Express lanes. This translates to roughly 50% better performance according to various tests.
    Let's hope that moving forward Intel will only release such mobile CPUs so we get better graphics upgrade paths from our laptops!

    • @AdriMul
      @AdriMul 3 года назад +1

      @@SlowHippie Your CPU is similar to his in that it doesn't have an integrated Thunderbolt controller. Instead you've got a discrete TB controller and with that comes extra latency which isn't ideal. It's a tough one, but if I were you I'd keep using the decent GTX 1070 until I can afford a new laptop or desktop, especially if you consider 1080p to be good enough. If your plan is to play non-competitive games at 1440p or 4k on a external monitor, then it could make sense in your situation to get a TB eGPU since connection latency is less of an issue at higher resolutions. But personally, TB eGPU enclosures being pricey, I'd go that route only if I had the right CPU, no decent dGPU in the laptop, and a spare but still capable GPU from an old desktop.

    I have the Lenovo yoga with 1255u, 12th gen. I have a pc tower, but now I'm using only my mobile setup which is yoga. So i took my rtx3070 from main pc, and put it to external gpu case, in my case this is same Asus, like in the video. I want to share some thoughts on this.
    1 It works!
    2 Most of the internal gpu memory now free, so i have more ram.
    3 cpu runs colder, because of internal gpu now idle, so cpu can boost up a little more.
    But:
    1 This setup is a hustle
    2 You need to dig a little bit more into settings
    3 You can't utilize all the power of somehow modern GPUs
    4 It's so pricey, so you'd better to just buy gaming laptop with discrete card.
    In my experience:
    1. I already had gpu, so for me gpu is "for free", i just need a way to use it. I bought only egpu case
    2 Egpu far better than intel iris xe on 1255u paired with ddr5 4600 ram.
    3 since I have not 4k monitor, performance is good indeed, for full hd, for full hd plus.
    4 Diablo 2 ressurected, doom, runs pretty smooth, but not perfect.
    5 i have fair amount of boost with for example adobe premiere, so it's convenient
    Resume:
    It works, but only if you already have a gpu. You can use some mid teer cards, and in that case it worth it. But if you have no gpu, it's better to stick with gaming laptop. Thank you for your attention. :)

    • @ibrahimoshodi4472

There's been verifiable performance improvements from 10th-gen to 11th-gen eGPU performance due to multiple reasons, the two most important being that the Thunderbolt controller is located on the CPU die and that Thunderbolt 4 has higher minimum requirements.

    It seems we need a better way to get 4-8 lanes of PCIe 4.0 bandwidth to an eGPU. I love my TB3, but 4 lanes of PCIe 3.0 is clearly not enough for eGPUs. It would be interesting to artificially restrict your desktop to see if you get similar results to the laptop.

    Great video. For an encore, you should see if someone can lend you a laptop with Thunderbolt 4 to see how the framerates compare, as TB4 has apparently improved the internal bottlenecks (despite still being limited overall to 40gbps)

      I'm actually seeing issues with 3080 Laptop (150 TGP) on the x8 custom connection on the Asus Flow X13. If you run an external display, it picks up a very nice bump in performance. With some games (say very light CS:GO) it's pretty huge. And 3080 Laptop is somewhere between 3060 Ti and 3070 Desktop in gaming performance. I just think x4 gen 3 aint cutting it no more.

    Disabling the laptop GPU allocates more power to the CPU which should help achieve more frame rates. I suggest running games at 1080p or 1440p because the bottleneck is too much for 4k unless you use DLSS at low to medium settings.

    Intel just celebrated 10years of Thunderbolt. How I wish they were also announcing Thunderbolt 5 with support for PCIe 5.0. When you do get round to testing the new ASUS proprietary eGPU solution that uses PCIe 3.0x8, you’ll realise that even moving to PCIe 4.0 for Thunderbolt won’t be enough, PCIe 5.0x4 will just about provide bandwidth needed to get eGPUs to deliver 4K60p with ray tracing. Since Alder Lake supports PCIe 5.0 it should really integrate Thunderbolt 5.

    not sure why anyone would want to run with an egpu. you are paying full price for the gpu plus a few hundred on top for the egpu enclosure for what will come way too short of the gpu's full capabilities to be worth it. just built a damn desktop pc. laptops were never a great way to play aaa games anyways. for all the money spent on a laptop that can game on its own anyways, a gpu and an external gpu, someone could build a pretty beastly desktop. i just see no scenario where this is the optimal setup.
