  • Trading Places is a 1983 American comedy film directed by John Landis and written by Timothy Harris and Herschel Weingrod. Starring Dan Aykroyd, Eddie Murphy, Ralph Bellamy, Don Ameche, Denholm Elliott, and Jamie Lee Curtis, the film tells the story of an upper-class commodities broker (Aykroyd) and a poor street hustler (Murphy) whose lives cross when they are unwittingly made the subjects of an elaborate bet to test how each man will perform when their life circumstances are swapped.
Coming to America is a 1988 American romantic comedy film directed by John Landis and based on a story originally created by Eddie Murphy, who also stars in the lead role. The film also co-stars Arsenio Hall, James Earl Jones, Shari Headley, and John Amos. The film was released in the United States on June 29, 1988. Eddie Murphy plays Akeem Joffer, the crown prince of the fictional African nation of Zamunda who travels to the United States in the hopes of finding a woman he can marry and will love him for who he is, not for his status or for having been trained to please him.

Both Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall had multiple roles in this movie. The guys running the barber shop. The reverend and the singer at the black beauty contest.
Arsenio also dressed in drag in one scene, coming on to Eddie Murphy's character, Akeem, and Arsenio's character, Jimmy ( who does a spit take).

Interesting fact: While plenty of people recognize Samuel L. During the 70s when I was at school in NYC, going between subway cars in NYC was definitely an accepted practice. Pretty much the same in Philly until a kid died a few years ago doing it. I don't think it was ever a thing in Boston. (Probably not official in any case, but it was useful when crowds were too much in one car or when someone dangerous or at least unwelcome got on the train.). The movies get it right.

    "Trading Places"
    1. The booking officer is Frank Oz. (various Muppets/Yoda)
    2. Beeks/Paul Gleason also played Richard Vernon in "The Breakfast Club" and the idiot police captain in "Die Hard".
    3. Landis didn't want Jamie Lee Curtis because she had always been a "scream queen" and he didn't know if she had the chops for comedy.
    4. When everyone pauses in the restaurant it's a play on the old "EF Hutton" commercial. "When EF Hutton speaks everybody listens".
    5. One of the most VHS pauses in history. Jamie Lee Curtis.😈
    6. GOOF: Where did Louis get the gun AND all those drugs for only $50? Even in 1983.🙄
    7. Don Ameche's strong religious convictions made him uncomfortable with swearing. This proved to be a problem for the scene at the end of the movie, where he had to shout out "Fuck him!" to a group of Wall Street executives. When he did act out the scene, it had to be done in one take, because Ameche refused to do a second one. He also had an issue with the N word.
    8. There's an Easter egg in "Coming to America" with the Duke brothers. Eddie Murphy at his best.
    "Coming to America"
    1. They killed the multiple roles.
    2. The appearance of the Dukes is an "Easter egg" from "Trading Places".
    3. "I'll just tell you one time, if you want to keep working here, you have to stay off the drugs." 🤣
    4. James Earl Jones AND John Amos! GMAFB🤩🤩
    5. A movie featuring John Amos worth a first time/share is "The Beastmaster".
    6. "Coming two America" is not as good as this one.

I grew up in Chicago. We would cross train cars all the time. It's not as dangerous as you'd think. The train is moving at a constant speed. Therefore, the passengers are moving at a constant speed equal to the train. Just have to watch your balance because the cars shift back and forth a little against each other. What is way more dangerous is walking on top of the train that you see in movies. You're still moving at the same speed as the train, but there's wind resistance working against you on the top.

I'm not sure why they chose the Overture to "The Marriage of Figaro" to open up "Trading Places" though. I suppose it's an up-tempo piece of classical music most people have heard. Maybe Landis just likes Mozart.

Allright: Your Majesty: King or Queen, Your Royal Highness (or HRH) for Prince(ss), unless they are stripped of their "style" Like Prince Harry did, he is, though, still a Prince. A None Royal Duke is styled as "Your Grace", other titled people are addressed as Lord or Lady (name of place, not first name), unless it's informal, then just Lord/Lady (first name). This is true for Europe, for other Royalty the rules are usually changed. In this movie, they are using the European way. BTW, most American movies/books (mostly Christmas ones, get it wrong.)

Carol can do drama as well. And Jamie Lee almost didn't get the job BECAUSE it was a more comedic role than what she was known for. She proved them wrong and we'd see her do more comedic roles later.

You need to watch the original nutty professor before you watch Eddie Murphy as the nutty professor also you should watch Flubber the original and the Robin Williams version

Oh, throw the man a bone. He's trying to build a franchise that he is probably gonna leave to _you,_ one day.

Ah, the old movies when Black culture was top oriented instead of twerking bottom worship. What an impressive improvement.

Maybe it’s because it’s a comedy in she didn’t appear to be too into the first movie, but I couldn’t make it to the second one. Plus not a fan of the edit on trading places. There were just way too many jokes that were cut out. But I’ll give her a shot on a different movie maybe a thriller.

I don't like Jaime Lee Curtis. I think a lot of people like her because her characters are talented, confident women with sex appeal who usually succeed in their goals. But I don't think she's attractive at all.

What is your basis for just stating "so many" have "that belief?" There are bad people in the world, that doesn't translate to racist boogeymen behind every corner.

Yeah, I want to know too. Why would these movies be best viewed out of order?

What are you talking about? Trading Places came out 5 years before Coming To America.

    • @gregleblanc9357

@bossfan49 because in coming to America, he gave a hand out to the bothers that were homeless which were the brothers he bankrupted in trading places. After they got the hand out, he even stated that tey were cack in business. You would miss that reference if you watch it in the other order
