Expat here, living in Florianopolis for more than 10years now. Great place, but for totally different reasons... First:Florianópolis is not cheap. It's literally more expensive than Rio/SP (Lived there, too). 850 per month? Only if you're vegan, going by bus, living in a shared apartment. Infrastructure sucks, (especially in high season), crime is okay.
I don't get it.... Why sugar coating everything? It's a good place, but keep it real.

I was in Florianópolis and of course that in the most tourist places prices are higher, but not in the whole town. The same in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. SP is the biggest city in the Americas and Rio, the most known abroad. Both have regions were prices are more affordable.
If you want to live in Jurerê and places crowded of Argentines in Florianópolis, of course you need much money, but don't generalize.

Problem with Brazil is there is not an efficient and high quality short term rentals marketplace with guarantees and safe payment. Airbnb is a total rip-off. I can stay in an amazing place in Germany, France or Japan for the same price as Florianopolis or Sao Paulo. Meanwhile for half the price of Florianopolis/Sao Paulo, I can stay in an amazing place in like Bangkok or other countries. For 1/4th the price I can stay in an amazing price in Indonesia or smaller cities in Thailand. Since rent is my largest cost, it sadly just doesn't even make sense to try 3 months in Brazil. It's price inefficient. I literally just sat here and spent 2-3 hours researching this. And the place in Germany? I'm actually going there in 2 weeks, contract already digitally signed. Tokyo? I already stayed 3 months with the short term accomodations company a few months ago. Very high class but economical.

I camped at Königssee and Garmisch Partenkirchen an payed 31,50 Euros each night, just for a little Place of grass, where I can put my tent 😂 For these prices I had amazing Air BnBs in Sp, Salvador or na Ilha Grande. In Rio my girlfriend and I had 5 Nights in an 3star Hotel for just 180 Euros. Compare that with the Campingplatz where I payed 31,50 por Night. Na minha opinião Alemanha é estupidamente caro. E a situação está piorando a cada dia.

No one commenting here seems to understand that your choice of city should be built around your preferences. I was in Floripa in May, and we are now in November. I am willing to bet more money than most people have access to that there hasn't been a significant change in the city during the past 6 months. Plus, I still have several friends that continue to live in Santa Catarina. Floripa is a good city if you like surfing and hiking. If you want to live in a metropolis with access to all kinds of urban resources, then it's definitely not the place for you. Crime: it's very rare for someone to pull a weapon on you unless you are doing something reckless, such a poking your nose where it doesn't belong downtown late at night. On the other hand, pickpocketing and breaking into cars can be a concern, most especially during the summer months with the influx of tourists. Cost of living: aside from housing, you will not find a major difference in the price of things such as food, unless you don't know how to shop around. If you only go to the most expensive store in town, then yes of course you are going to pay an arm and a leg. That's no difference than solely going to Whole Foods in the USA, rather than shopping at Walmart! So don't say everything in Floripa is double the price simply because you are too lazy to go another 5 kilometers to a less expensive store. Weather: Some people actually like cooler weather. I hated being in Willemstad when I could not take a 10 minute walk at 8 in the morning without sweating bullets. Floripa is for a certain kind of person; it's not for everyone.

Hey, in the next few weeks/months up until the 14th of October, I have time to travel. I would love to visit Brazil, landing in Sao Paulo, visiting Rio, and traveling down to Florianopolis. I am 20, so I am on a budget. I want to party and go surfing and stuff, so not really much sightseeing. Do you guys think the weather conditions will be good enough? I really want to see Rio and Florianopolis because of the backpacking community and the surfing, but looking at weather reports, it seems like the water could be quite chilly. The last thing I want is to have to wear wetsuits or trousers outside.
Should I look for flights to Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica, or other Latin American countries, or even the north of Brazil, or do you think central and southern Brazil in October is equally as good?
P.S.: I have some backpacking experience from traveling Southeast Asia. I know Brazil is a bit pricier. I am traveling alone, and my timeframe is around the 25th of August to the 14th of October. So I guess Florianopolis in October, Rio and Sao Paulo and some other cities in late August and September. I am german btw. and great video.

In Florianopolis, there is a huge difference of temperature between the beaches in the south of the island (cold) and in the north of the island (warm). In the north likely you will not need wetsuits, but in the south, better take it. The best waves, however, are in the south... If you like surfing, try UBATUBA in Sao Paulo. Nice waves, warm water, and SO MANY beaches that you will never get bored.

    • @InMyBrz

You will need a wetsuit most or all of the year unless you are from a colder Argentina, then it seems warmer here to them
Maybe you meant to say the south water is COLD but in the NORTH (of Brasil) the water is warm, that is correct.
If you want to check out Brasil the warmest time is from DEC to March UNLESS you go to the north of Brasil.

Comparison and contrast is the basis for a video titled 'The Best Place To Live In Brazil', no?. "Attack" is your pejorative term and demonstrates your personal insecurity which coincidently is a problem in most cultures with many insecure, nationalistic people. Citizens who are too insecure to admit the problems their country, state, city or region. This is definitely a problem in Brazilian culture IMO (America as well).
Brazilians, especially their musical artists constantly brag about how wonderful their country is. In my experience after >33 years in this country people who have not traveled much or never traveled and have no personal basis to compare themselves with other countries still do.

WRONG ... YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT ! I LIVE HERE, YOU DON'T
Mass transit in Floripa is the best in Brasil for all of the island.
Talking about Jurere, Canasvieiras, Ingleses, you have TICEN downtown direct to TICAN Canasvieiras, then many buses to Ingleses and RioVermilho, Barra de Lagoa etc.
You can go from TICEN downtown to Campeche easily too. I'd rather take the bus from the north island to downtown because it's a lot easier than driving
Most of the locals live in the NORTH ISLAND
Up here mostly is annual rentals. Can rent a 2br apto for r$2000 or less a month
Canasvieiras is another story, it is a tourist town from Dec to April, very expensive aptos r$300-600 per DAY.
OFF season there you can rent furnished month to monty for about r$1200 a month because the town is empty of tourists, a ghost town except for the locals
ONE big thing too is that a LOT of people on the island speak English, from grocery store cashiers to owners of small businesses. MANY MORE than what I found in the north ; Recife and Joao Pessoa where it was just about impossible to meet people who spoke english.
BIGGEST NEGATIVE is the COLD WEATHER from June to October with a lot of rain and storms. That makes the beaches unavailable
TAXES to register a 15 year old FIAT here are crazy, costs me about r$800 a year, 3x other places in Brasil.
SAFETY - there is a large police presence here
Near Canasvieiras there is a PRF police academy where police come for training all year. So in the town you always have street cops and cops going to school, is very safe.
STOP SPREADING A BUNCH OF BULLSHYT

Very interesting video, thank you for taking the time to produce it. Two pieces of constructive feedback from me:
    1) Comparing only murder rates to justify if a place is 'safe' or not is not sufficient. As a tourist, the thing I am at risk of is violent crime and muggings, not murders which are usually targeted. Comparing the Violent Crime and Overall Crime rates would be a more relevant stat.
    2) The English language of the narrator is pretty poor, some mistranslated words like 'public organ' (no idea what this is even trying to say), and also lots of incorrectly pronounced words (such as 'awed', and pretty much every word ending in -ed of which there are a lot). It someone detracted from the content for me unfortunately which is a shame, it might be better to get this re-narrated by someone with a higher level of spoken English.
    Thanks again :)

Please, I hope you don’t get me wrong but, it sounds racially offensive right in the first words of the video. I recommend you find a better and nicer way to specify some world class places.

I moved from São Paulo to Florianópolis and let me tell you: it's hell. Over 60% of population is very poor and comes from other brazilian states.
There are hundreds if not thousands of people who have committed crimes elsewhere who are hiding here.
There is organized crime as in any other big brazilian city.
The number of people who haze ZERO respect for others is too big. Every single week there are news and posts about elderly people being beaten up in the streets - not by criminals but local population.
This is a great place if you love surfing and doing sports every single day but the most terrible choice for someone who wants to live a decent and safe life in a civilized place. And don't get me started on drug use.
This is not a dream island. It's a great place to vacation or spend a weekend.

Although some people outside of Brazil, especially in the US, use the term 'Latin America,' I would say South America is a much technical term to be using. It's geography. .... Stop using such a racist term .. This term was created in the US to segrate the rest of americas from them US and Canada. .. Se você é brasileiro mesmo acho que vai entender o que estou dizendo.
