One of the few episodes where she didn't wear the black bow in her hair. I read somewhere that it had some special significance to her but she never explained what it was.
One little detail always cracks me up - the sound that the necklace makes when Laura drops it on the kitchen counter at 12:36. It is clearly intentional on the soundtrack.
MTM always looked so petite and dainty as Laura Petrie. Mary Richards seemed so tall and sophisticated. Amazing that she portrayed both women so equally well. A great talent.
rob is like a 5 year old boy who made his mom a necklace in kindergarten class out of bottle caps and he's all excited so the mom has to play pretend she likes it.
A necklace of bottle caps made by one's 5 y.o. child would be a delight to most of us Moms. But that....thing....looks as if it belongs on the hood of a 1935 Hupmobile!
Funny how actors follow & work again with actors. MTM & Gavin in this early show and then again in the MTM show. It did take me a moment to realize it was Gavin.
My favorite view of Gavon Maclead is actually in his earlier roles before the Mary Tyler Moore show. He's usually playing a con man of such. He's very funny as Murry Slaughter too but funnier as a con man.
This is the first of two episodes concerning jewelry; the other episode has Laura receiving a solid gold U.S. map pin from Rob's mother. Maybe one of the writers had a thing for jewelry?!
Aside from the ugly and gaudy necklace gift, this is how marriage should be. Where the husba d be ds over backwards to love his wife, and she does the same without harming his feelings.
In the episode where Rob explains to Richie that he actually has 7 middle names (Rosebud), Rob's father's name is Sam. In this episode, Rob's mother calls his father Edward. 19:25

That necklace is horrid. Laura should have been honest with Rob. It weighs a ton and would be a literal pain to wear, plus it's so gaudy. He ought to know his wife well enough to know her likes and dislikes. I can't stand any necklace if the lone pendant is larger than a dime, and wouldn't want any that had more than one pendant.
I felt that Murray Slaughter was a bit of a supercilious character on the MTM show. He was either antagonizing Ted Baxter, or professing his love for Mary Richards. Gavin McLeod's portrayal of Maxwell in this DVD episode is cloying and simpering. A bargain basement characterization of Peter Lorre.
(Now ex) husband learned very early in our marriage to NEVER buy me jewelry. His taste was so awful, it was even uglier than that monstrosity on the show. Hearing vs. Listening Throughout the pages of Scripture, there’s a word that gets repeated: "hear," or a related word, "listen." In the Old Testament, the Hebrew word "Shema" translates into English as "hear" or "listen" and is often used to emphasize the act of listening, understanding, and obeying. Today’s culture places value on doing many things at once; we often try to listen while focusing on other tasks, which divides our focus. The sound of someone’s voice might come into our ears, but if we’re also scrolling social media, doing schoolwork, or making a meal, we might not fully understand their words. But in the biblical context, "hearing" does not simply include sound reception; it also involves active obedience and an effort to understand. In Mark 4:9, Jesus invites us to listen-to hear and obey, encouraging us to pay careful attention to His words: "He who has ears to hear, let him hear." Jesus isn't just asking us to audibly hear His words and carry on with our personal agenda; He's urging us to actively listen and obey, to live by His truth. Listening and obeying are what build our faith in Jesus Christ. Hearing the Word of God should lead to a transformed life marked by fruitfulness. As you reflect on the idea of listening in Scripture, consider your heart and spiritual receptivity. Are you attentive to God's Word, allowing it to transform your life, or is your hearing divided, causing you to resist His call?

True. But, when I think about it, the casting for his parents was PERFECT for each of the episodes. If the same pair was used for all of the parents episodes, it would not have been as effective.
@@danielasuncion9991 yeah, you're right. they probably should have changed ALL the supporting characters for every episode. like laura could be played by hattie mcdaniel for one episode dealing with pancakes or buddy could be played by edward g robinson and the episode could be about gangsters and then the next episode, buddy could be played by rock hudson and sally would develop a crush on him, etc. i think that would have been VERY EFFECTIVE, indeed.

buddy can never just say "my wife". it's always "my wife, PICKLESSSSSSS" nobody does that in real life unless you don't know their wife's name, and often not even then.
another constantly overused trope on this show is when they can never just SAY SOMETHING OUTRIGHT, they have to beat around the bush and hem and haw while the other person INTERRUPTS THEM OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN. it's really irritating. in this case, laura even tells rob to just listen and not interrupt, and 2 seconds later HE INTERRUPST AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN. it happens in every episode.

Mary Tyler Moore's facial expressions, in this episode, are PRICELESS.
