    A lot of people seem to like the Argon, which seems great, but if you're looking for a case that's a little smaller and/or a little cheaper, the Flirc case is a fantastic choice: it passively cools the SoC through the aluminum body really well. I haven't tried RetroPi yet but I run multiple full Linux operating systems on it overclocked, using as a desktop, and it stays well within safe temperature ranges.
    Thanks for the video John! Great to see more Pi content.

A project I should look into a bit more.

      They use under 10 watts, and are fully capable of being used as a desktop, although web browsing is a little painful but only because web browsers are so bloated.
      I'd recommend a FLIRC case - the entire case is the heat sink. It's impossible to over-heat them.
      I'd also recommend at least 2GB, but you can get by with 1GB. I did ffmpeg transcoding of bunch of 720p files on my pi just to test it, the case got toasty, but you could handle it. I think 54C was max. You need more than 1GB to transcode files over 720p, probably 4. You really don't want to do transcoding on a PI, but it's interesting it can do it.

    I just picked one of these up so I can build an open source firewall / DNS sinkhole with pfsense, which I plan to run 24/7 on my home network. I would recommend the flirc cases. They're a really nice all metal design, and if you really still wanted access to the GPIO pins you can solder on a ribbon cable, the case has room to feed it through. The flirc case on the 3 was really nice, too. Also the perfect case if you don't plan to use GPIO pins as well.
    Also, I know this information is hard to find, but if you're looking for heatsinks try to find these sizes:
    CPU: 14mm x 14mm x 4mm
    GPU: 15mm x 10mm x 4mm
    USB Controller: 9mm x 9mm x 4mm
    Ethernet Controller: 7mm x 7mm x 4mm

  • @scooter4196
    @scooter4196 4 года назад +20

    Just a suggestion, in case you didn't, you will want to overclock the memory as well. When you overclock your GPU, it's severely limited by the frequency of the ram because it's a shared pool with the CPU.

    Watch out for older variants. Revision 1.2 came out around Dec 2019 and that revision would give the user the option to use a power through put usc-c hub to both power the pi and to use for data transfer. There is no visible way for your device to be known to be an older model until you boot it up and look. Sadly the manufacturer is 100% to blame as you may have been solda defective product...and they truly didn't care, but instead took measures to hide this fact which can cause damage to to the unit in older revisions. But can do damage to whatever it is plugged into or has into it. Possibly even a fire, depending on usage.

      without knowing what device you have specifically. Nobody will help you. There are to many combinations to randomly give advice. So make a video and show any names or numbers etc. Describing it may help. Where you bought it and does it still have an active site, like an amazon page? I'm not an expert either. But it doesn't hurt me to look up something if you provide more info. Take into consideration, Pi machines are hobby computers. Its not a typical windows computer. Everything is an uphill battle. I've been interested in upgrading to a Pi 4, so I'm happy to hear the emulation for consoles that the previous Pi couldn't handle is coming along well. I'll probably wait until N64 emulation is better, but by then hopefully the price for the hardware has dropped a little more.

      Yeah disappointed that n64 emulation is so crummy -- Dreamcast is a more advanced system! Many n64 games are just unplayable on my Pi 3B+ and I've just started exploring options to optimize by tweaking settings, overclocking, etc. I haven't exhausted options with the 3B+ yet, but after seeing only limited gains so far, I had considered upgrading to a 4 -- this is telling me to hold off.

      The reason why the N64 versions are poor (ie requiring brute force power to emulate) is because the N64 hardware itself was poorly designed (a sign of stressed product rushed to market), most emulators particularly with protected IPs are reverse engineered and N64 has been notoriously complicated to figure out.

    My friend is a software engineer. He told me just this weekend that he helped contribute to and review the code of DamonPS2 abs then decided to describe to me the work that had to be done and what he contributed.
    It’s all very technical but it basically boils down to our technology being so good they they actually have to change code to constrain hardware power in order for things to run properly.

    • @retrosoul8770
      @retrosoul8770 4 года назад +1

      @@EchoWinters Yep, it's because those systems were poorly designed, the more poorly constructed the architecture is, the more difficult the game programming and emulation becomes. The only difference is, the Ps2 (and 3) were intentionally designed that way, which is sad on Ken Kutaragi's part. A balanced, efficient system motherboard/chipset is always superior like the Ps1, Dreamcast, Gamecube and their emulation reflects that.
