The Mugen RR at the drop of a gear lol.. I don't care about bhp, I don't care about what material the dashboard is made from. I just want to hear the magic of a naturally aspirated V-TEC..
The 8th Gen always looked good from the front, but the back looks like garbage. The RR did a great job by remaining a sedan and adding the giant wing does wonders
I’ve used a Mugen RR for a couple of months, a friend has one. And the comment about the suspension being far to stiff is completely incorrect. Yes it’s very firm springs but the dampers are so good that it’s actually a very comfy car. Yes the seats are mounted to hi (I’m 6ft 1) though. The Mugen RR is, in my mind the greatest all round FWD car of all time.
Christian Lilly that is certainly not true at all! The best integra platform is the 96-01 integra type r which was factory braced and seam welded all around the body and handled extremely well and performed phenomenal! I should know since I have a completely bone stock 95,000 mile b18c5 usdm type r engine in my dc2 and Jesus that thing is a little monster for its time

I love better the mugen RR than the Type R. The exhaust from the mugen RR is really loud, fast and awesome. The type R exhaust is really low and quite. Mugen RR the Best and does carry manual emergency brake which i love.
I love my FG2 with 07 K24a2 swap + All the supporting mods to suspension, motor mounts, brakes etc. etc. It's basically my own self built Mugen RR for half the price. Weighs in right at 2750 [which I didn't believe either when I saw the sheet, but I guess its true the coupes are lighter than the sedans]. Putting down a nice 220 / 170 right at the wheels with instant torque. It is true, that as soon as your foot touches the pedal at 6k rpm, you really get a feeling of your body singing with joy lmao. Now all I gotta do is turbo it, and I will have something that Honda cant release from the factory :]
FK8 was designed by UK and turbocharged it (always turbo any cars by the West). Destroying the iconic legendary high rev vtec found in type R from JDM (East).
nel c the engine comes from the US.. they get shipped to the UK in crates. Apart from that Honda openly admitted they cant do NA engines anymore due to stricter legislation around exhaust gasses. So Turbo was the only way to go if they wanted to keep up with the competition. I have owned a oldschool B18c (JDM type R) powered car and now own a FK8 and yes the high revving sound is gone but the intake noise and engine itself still sounds every bit like a Honda used to allthough muffled because of the turbo. You will always have people that swear by the old N/A type cars, but as a car lover you can’t deny the awesome work Honda has done with the FK8 within modern day rules. It is the fastest FF car from factory to date just like the Integra Type R was for 5 years in a row.
Emission standards may play a role in why they went turbo but most importantly they needed to keep up with the power trend. Honda will most likely keep staying with 2.0L small displacement cars forever while everyone else is using V6 or V8 (and seeing 400+ hp) to increase power so turbo is the only way to stay on comaparable terms with everyone else. How else would you justify spending 50k? Look at volvos turbo/supercharged 2.0L hybrid pumping out 316hp @5700 rpm. Honda's still got a long way to go.
Would get both of them; that's the thing with Type-R's, each generation is unique and valuable in their own ways, with each generation building upon the previous while implementing safety standards and practicalities of their respective time period.
The helical LSD Honda used has much less to do with the lack of torquesteer in the new Civic Type-R; it actually is a function of the suspension geometry they've used to place the steering axis very near the middle of the tire contact patch.
It looked like you weren’t driving the FK8 quick enough to truly appreciate it. Every other reviewer has raved about it, putting it well ahead of its European rivals.
Great video! I have been waiting for this! I own a Mugen SI and I think the K series engine have more potential especially if you want to go force induction. Mine is completely stock still. And for the record it is not the same as the regular SI with a body kit. The suspension and tires add a lot to the handling. The exhaust sound is amazing and the body kit gives it a unique look. I plan on making a video of it soon.
@CC: I'm laughing my ass off when you say "is it the pocket rocket we used to love?" Cause I own an 89 Si.....shit that's older than you!!! That is a pocket rocket. When properly tuned, you can have a shitload of fun with this. Cheers
5:30 that's because the vtec on the newest one isn't vtec.. It actually lowers cam timing to smoothen the power curve, at least that's what the hot version/vtec club crew were saying when they reviewed it.
FD2 everyday of the week, it just looks and sounds fantastic, whereas the FK8 sounds as exciting as a 1.2 Jazz and looks like the standard car has been handbrake turned into every Halfords shelf.
It would be nice, but it would add weight. The other reason why they won't do it, is because AWD is banned in most Touring Car series. Touring Car race rules also state, I believe, that the car must be factory show room, then the car is transformed into a full fledged Touring race car.
I’d rather own and drive a ctr that has no radio, rides stiffer than my upper lip feeling like I’m sitting in a van than the new ctr’s. The RR only has 300 in production because it was made only to be raced. It just so happens to look 🔥 as well. That thing is going to be worth a pretty penny in the next 20 yrs.
honda did not pick UK to "upscale" the quality. As for a honda car the best quality they can do is out of their factory in Japan & all the Mugen RR were made only in Japan. For 2006 and for Honda, the Mugen RR was a no compromise build.
The comment that you shouldn't own a type R unless you know how to heel and toe is ridiculous, maybe in the ek9 days but considering you didn't even mention the ep3 it's silly to say such about these mainstream models.
I have the FK myself I like that more as its does have a real hand brake and better interior IMHO but the Fk8 (new one) also has a ally bonnet and mechanical slip differential and to be fair the seating position just look all wrong in the RR
I got to say that the European version or Mugen Version seems more refined but the American FK8 is growing on me and it has a more wilder style. The HP is very little. Nothing a small tune in boost or intake cant handle. Honestly.
I don't see how you can recommend buying the Mugen RR, a limited run, out of production car, over the FK8 Civic type R, a modern car with better performance that you can actually still walk into a showroom and buy. Get a Mugen Si if you're in NA. I got a used one with around 92k miles on it for 18k USD. I put around 40k miles on it in 3 years and when i went to trade it in Honda gave me 24,000 for it. was it jsut me bt did he say the fk8 sounds louder in vtec? i thought vtec was reversd in the turbo civic to give you better power down low and lets the turbo take over up high?
honda's in house tuning company. They only ever produced one car for sale, but they've made lots of concepts and they sell performance parts for hondas.
Ironically, I prefer the newer FK8 CTR’s rear end to the older FD2 CTR Mugen RR’s. The rear taillights just don’t do it for me. It’s the reason why I much prefer the FA5 Mugen Civic Si from the States and DC5 Integra Type R.
