    Two little-known circumstances relating to this composition that is part of a larger lyrical tragedy, "Les Boréades":
    1) was composed by Rameau at the ripe old age of 80,
    2) after its first public performance in 1770, the complete work was performed publicly for the second time only in 1982.

    When I listen to Vikingur, I am suddenly aware that the notes on a page of music are an almost desperate attempt to put on paper what can never be adequately expressed with pen and ink. Olafsson lets them sing unhindered

    The greatest of human emotion embodied through restraint, technical mastery, sincere connection between musician and instrument, and a heartfelt longing to make ones playing rise harmoniously to the heavens. A transcendent performance rarely seen. Bravo!

    Growing up overseas I learned that Deutche Grammaophone was a company that recorded serious musicians We had a few at home as my mother was lover of classical music. I began to listent to it in my teen years, first Ofenbach, then Gershwin's two best known pieces. In 1967 we went to Germany and I remember seeing DG recordings sold on the streets from racks or recordngs. That image has stayed in my mind all these years.

    Not enterely a great transcription of the original, but a good commercial job. A disappointing lack of dramatism and tenderness of the original. Viva Rameau 🇫🇷🇫🇷🌹🌹

    • @marcustulliuscicero2676
      @marcustulliuscicero2676 3 года назад +7

      What do you mean by "the original"? Listen to orchestral recordings of this part, and they're all completely different! And, in my opinion, Olafsson's interpretation is far more tender than many of the orchestral interpretations of Rameau's score. Also, drama and tenderness are somewhat opposites, no? Vikingur's interpretation is certainly not dramatic, but it is very tender. And I don't think Rameau intended the Entree to be dramatic anyway.

    Mostly excellent and beautiful. However, I think it's a tiny bit too slow. This is Baroque, not Romantic music.

    • @victorgscardoso
      @victorgscardoso 2 месяца назад

      It is in line with the original from in Opera. In my opinion this is what makes this theme so “out of the box” and Rameau so worth listening to. It’s a bridge to the music to be…

    What a shame...much too much pedal...why?

    • @blackletter2591
      @blackletter2591 Год назад

      He has deliberately used less ornamentation than you would expect in a Rameau piece, even if it was not for keyboard. Fewer ornaments would mean more pedal to fill out the sound.
