    I think it's better that Gabe happened this way. This way keeps both Sally and Percy from being killers. And that's horrible as Gabe was in the movie, having him be stoned by opening the fridge in his own house was stupid. Where is this is him being bringing it upon himself by committing a federal offense opening someone else's mail. Plus, Sally still gets the growth because she is divorcing him period meaning she gets to still be strong without being someone who profits off of murdering her husband.
    Another example of Sally strength is that you see she grabs an umbrella when she's leaving. Contrasting the first episode in which she sits in the rain. Now you see that she is moving on from Poseidon and making room for Paul

      I agree that the Gabe change is appropriate. The book Gabe is explicitly physically abusive on top of being more obviously awful; the show hasn't shown Gabe as doing anything worthy of being literally murdered. He's abrasive and selfish and petty, but he isn't violent. So Sally takes action that matches the level of his threat: he's toxic, so she removes him from their lives by divorcing him. In the book, he meets a violent end because he is violent. In the show, he suffers the consequences of his selfish pettiness.

    • @benspiller
      @benspiller  5 месяцев назад

      Yeah, this is a good point 😂 I think I just liked how morbid the original way was but this way definitely makes Sally and Percy much better people without being involved in benefiting from murder.
      Absolutely love that detail about the umbrella!! That's the kind of detail I want to see continue from this show and I'm so annoyed at myself for missing it now, it's a perfect representation of her moving on and the subtlety is done so wonderfully.

    • @matte5705
      @matte5705 5 месяцев назад

      I also think it matches Sallys show motivations more. Her arc in the show is much more centered around how her morality differs from the morals of the mythical world and how she has worked to instill that in Percy and I think even with a more explicitly abusive Gabe while book Sally's actions were absolutely justified imo they are too close to the Gods version of justice and especially the godly obsession with revenge which has an impact not only on the victim (who in gabes case deserves it) but on the enactor as well.
      And I think that is actually really fitting with it being Medusa's head, because with the version of Medusa we get in the show we see how that can happen. We have someone who has been treated horribly and is righteously angry but what may have started as justified vengeance and anger has clouded her to the point where that's the only solution she knows, showing no hesitation to attack Percy and friends or Uncle Ferdinand.

    Poseidon technically did answer Percy’s question about if he dreams of his mom. When he showed Percy that pearl.
    He basically confirmed to Percy that those 4 pearls came from him.

      @@benspiller definitely! in the later books, especially book 5, there are pages and pages of action with few breaks. i think season 1 was crucial to set up the characters and exposition, but i fully expect to see more action going forward. even though they weren’t long scenes, they were still very well done.

      I think especially with ares it'd both make Percy less relatable and neuter any threat from ares and thus also any future monster below ares on thr totem pole if a barely trained 12 year old could hold his own for too long against the literal embodiment of war rather than taking advantage of ares' hubris and taking a huge risk for a quick win.
      I also think from a fight choreography point of view it wouldn't be believable either, since walker is also so visably young still and ares is a literal pro wrestler. That's also why I was glad the climax was the fight with Luke. It was also pretty short but i thought it was done very well and sets the stage for their future encounters

    Olympus is supposed to be the reverse of Hades' palace. Hades modeled his palace off of Olympus since he isn't allowed to be there. That's a detail right from the books
    also, yes backbiter did have that power in the book, it was just very one-off. After poisoning Percy, Luke slashes backbiter in the air and vanishes

    Kronos was never physical until "you know who." I hope they keep with that theme in the series, unlike the "who know what."
    While I wanted to see more fights out of enjoyment. But storywise this was the right move.

    • @benspiller
      @benspiller  5 месяцев назад

      Same, like that Luke does become the face of the antagonist as it just makes it so much more personal to Percy instead of a God who he can't be as close to.
      Agree as well, the story takes complete priority and they did it so well, only hope that as the show goes on and they get a more streamlined approach to producing it they can find room to maybe make the fight scenes a little longer if they can.

  • @OsirisGaming66
    @OsirisGaming66 5 месяцев назад +9

    I’m probably the only one to see this but the fight between Luke and Percy gave me Obi Wan and Count Dooku vibes in a way. The line where Luke says that Kronos opened his eyes to the truth then talks about the arrogance of the gods reminds me a lot when Dooku was talking about how the Jedi and Republic are corrupt and he’s bringing a end to them. Both of them made armies by allies of the people they saw as enemies while being controlled by an evil mastermind (Kronos and Sidious retrospectively). I honestly love how their sick and twisted views seem heroic to them and see a reason to cause violence and destruction to their worlds while thinking they are the saviors.

    • @benspiller
      @benspiller  5 месяцев назад +1

      You're absolutely right, I hope they build on this as long as Sidious is such an amazing villain and using him as inspiration for Kronos could work so well. Also really hope they put a lot of emphasis on how this is still a very morally grey situation, with no clear villain besides Kronos as Luke's past and treatment by the Gods has been what's caused his betrayal and I'm pretty sure not all the Titans were evil in the end either so having a really nice morally complex story would be amazing.

    Love the recrute change over the wanting to kill Percy by Luke. Poseiden's eyes told Percy all he needed sweet touch, Zeus wouldnt have liked the answer if verbalised. Spiders could be used in season 2 by the Cyclops. Soon as season ended i started book 1 , 5th time reading series

    I kinda figured that Gabe wouldn't get killed by Percy or Sally. They toned down Gabe's aggressive factor for more of a 'pathetic' one. Which I think suits the tone of the show better. The implication of physical abuse in the books in the books gave Sally enough reason to justify offing Gabe herself but without that here it would feel a lot -worse-.
    I love the show personally, even though I could definately see that many of the changes feels a bit like overcorrections from moments in the books. Like the group knowing every threat before it happens. It has moments like with Medusa where I think it improves the themes that the show is attempting to convey and emphasizes just how shitty the Gods are. Other times it feels a bit like it was used to cut down on time but still include the scene, like with Crusty.
    Overall, I think what we got is a taste of what Rick is capable of doing with the show. Minor greviances and flaws aside, I enjoyed it immensely and I'm excited for it.

    • @benspiller
      @benspiller  5 месяцев назад

      that's actually a really good point, assuming all of Gabe's physical abuse was off-camera but still there but now it's clear he's simply just pathetic and causes no justification for his murder, this death is far more fitting for him being pathetic, egotistical and arrogant.
      Agree, the show was absolutely amazing and the changes they made at least had a purpose to allow the story to flow better, nothing that they changed was without reason or too drastic that the overall story suffered.
      seeing as this was I think Rick's first time writing a live-action TV show, he did exceptionally well and to only have minor grievances is a testament to his writing abilities, honestly all the flaws in this can be easily ironed out next season so I cannot wait to see what he's capable of later on.

  • @hikari9262
    @hikari9262 5 месяцев назад +8

    The books aren't perfect, and Rick knows that as well. Parts of Book 1 and 2 isn't consistent with the rest of Book 3, 4 and 5. Such as Luke being pure villain in Books 1 and 2, and then suddenly sympathetic and nuanced in Books 3 to 5.
    Rick is rewriting it through the tv show, and I don't know why he isn't allowed to do that.

    • @benspiller
      @benspiller  5 месяцев назад +2

      I love that he's making these changes, I think it's going to result in a stronger story in the end, just some changes catch me off guard and I need a bit of time to think about why they've been done and right now there is literally nothing that's negatively impacted the show, every change has either been to enhance the characters or story or to help practically like budgetary stuff and keeping run times down.

      @@benspiller Yep, I agree some of it do catch us off guard, and if we take a step back we will all be able to determine the main culprit of the pacing is the short runtime.

      Caught me off guard though, in the book they were at the brink of war yet Olympus was filled, basically showing that the war wasn't going to affect mythological creatures and just harm humanity, continuing the theme of the Gods and Mythicals lacking care for mortals. Still confused about that creature though, glad I caught it but for the life of me I can't think of what it was.

    Overall I think that this was a good first season, definitely better than the movies, I myself haven't really read the books or know too much about Greek mythology, but based on the small knowledge I do have I think it was handled pretty well, there were a couple things this season that I still think could've been handled better, one of the main things is that Since this first season was only eight episodes I do think it should've been closer to an hour long each episode just so that we could flesh out different story beats especially if you're gonna add in new things which were done to improve the story or to set up for future seasons, but I think if we had had a little bit more runtime per episode it would have just helped Expand on Rick's original book while also adding a new bits he wanted to add into expand the story and it felt a little bit rushed like there were definitely some moments where it was more telling them showing which as someone who hasn't really read any of the books I found that to be a bit frustrating, I've only read the first two books and seen the films I'm currently listening to the third one, but I think just having slightly longer episodes would've really helped given how few episodes there are, it works really well for shows done on networks like Netflix where they have the hour long run time and so they can afford to have eight episodes because they're able to Mix different chapters together which is also what they did for the show as well, but because the episodes were so short everything ended up feeling really cramped and very rushed especially with the first two episodes and then again with the Lotus casino, so I do hope that when season two comes they will either have more episodes in the season if they're going to do only 30 minutes or that they'll expand it to 40 or 50 minutes per episode in order to fit everything in that needs to be shown, as well as have enough time to add anything they want to add, because that's where I feel like the first season was lacking that they changed a lot of things but then didn't give those new changes as well as the original story room to breathe so I do hope they do change that in future seasons, but as a whole this definitely was a good season and a good introduction to the story in my opinion. Although I will say the thing with Hades palace as well as with Mount Olympus did irritate me a little bit, the fact that Hades underworld looked like hell and was very gloomy and creepy I think did not help new viewers with distinguishing the difference between the underworld and hell because it did feel way too much like hell especially with that forest of punishment instead of fields of Aspel, I'm not really sure what happened there as well as his palace just feeling really gloomy and I really expected it to be brighter and more colourful, then again with Olympus because when Hermes first stepped out of the elevator it was really bright and shiny but then when we actually got there it was really dark and gloomy and I understand that's because the war was going on but the whole thing felt really drained of colour like I expected it to be just more full of people and more colourful even if there was a storm raging there still should've been like more colour and I do like how they handled it in the movie a little bit more where it just felt grander and more colourful, because in the show they did a good job at making everything feel grand and like Greek royalty, but they did a bad job at Showcase and colour in brightness in the show which I feel like a lot of TV shows and movies lack they really seem to drain a lot of shows of colour which make it really hard to see what's happening and I feel like this is just another show that is falling into that trap unfortunately, so hopefully they can brighten it up for season two make it feel more colourful and alive obviously it needed to be somewhat menacing because of Zeus, but if you're gonna do that then you really need to show that there is a war going on I feel like we only really heard about it on the radio and heard a bit of thunder and lightning but it would've been nice to have it be a bit more extreme in my opinion, just setting up for the war before Poseidon ultimately calls it off because otherwise what's the point in missing the deadline if you're not gonna show the consequences of that, so it's just little things like that where those changes ended up not quite working or not quite making sense so I am curious about how they're gonna handle that in future seasons, but again overalla good show

    • @benspiller
      @benspiller  5 месяцев назад +1

      Completely agree, the run time was quite suffocating, at times pacing was a bit all over the pace so making the episodes longer has to be a necessity for the next seasons especially as the books get longer. It's an annoying trend in Hollywood where big shows like this are given a small number of episodes with 'hour-long' runtimes which end up being 30 minutes, honestly think doing a large season with an episode per chapter that's 20 minutes long would help immensely. Hopefully, all these locations can be further explored in future seasons, Hades is such a diverse place and I'd love to see stuff like the fields of punishment and Persephone's garden just to show off that juxtaposition, and Olympus definitely needs a revisit, especially before the final season, this place needs to feel like the centre of power with many people present and just embody the grandeur of the Gods. But overall everything we got from this season was really good and I think it's going to allow the creators to build off of very well.

    • @AshleysAdvice

      @@benspiller Agreed, it's definitely a good first season. Everything I said am more just a little nitpicks or gripes I have with the show that can be easily remedied in later seasons if we have longer episodes and are able to flush out certain environments such as Hades palace and Olympus along with the Lotus casino if we're able to flush out those places a little bit more especially the Lotus casino showing how dangerous it actually is along with adding more colour and more people to places like Olympus as well as brightening up and putting more emphasis on Hades palace and how the after life actually works in terms of the good places versus bad places in later seasons then it'll really Pull up season one, as it stands right now because it's only one season it's a little bit flat because of how short the runtime was as well as the amount of things we got to see and like I said if they do put more emphasis on it in the later seasons then it'll change how you see season one it'll lift it up make it much better which I assume they're going to do, but overall it is a good for a season and a good jumping off point, most of what I said I just little neck pics that can be easily fixed in later seasons, but I do think showing what the afterlife is really like as well as the dangers of the l Lotus casino and then also Mount Olympus and how grand it is would be really important, you see this in movies like Thor or even the first terrible lightning thief movie where they do brighten things up and show you how grand it is now obviously they don't have the same budget for the TV show, but it would've just been better to make everything more colourful and more alive, also within the show you have to admit it's really hard to see what's going on a lot of the time because of how dark it is and I know that that's a trend for shows and movies but as someone who is visually impaired it really pisses me off because it makes it really hard for me to know what's going on and I just think it would be better to not make things feel so gritty and lacking of colour but rather brighten things up so it's clear to see what's going on, again that's just my opinion but I feel like all the important parts of the lightning fee are there and we were shown changes that hopefully will flesh out our characters moving forward like a definitely enjoyed the changes they made to Sally's character, also making Gabe not so abusive and finding the head there by killing him all on his own was hilarious, I'm curious to see if they still stick to what happened in the books in the second season regarding that.
