Dropping a lot of Jewels out there coach! From what i've seen as a player and coach Active feet when breaking down in the open field makes the biggest difference between a good tackle or broken ankles. GREAT ENERGY BTW
Absolutely. You need to stay active with your feet. The biggest issues when an athlete stops moving his feet is that he lunges his body forward and loses a good base. He needs to bring his hands through and the feet need to come with them.
You lunge... You LOSE... You think... You LOSE. Simple football rules. Move ya damn feet. Cut the angle. Hips to hips, body to body, put the fuckin screws to him, x the arms grab some jersey and run through... Coach to coach, way to preach brotha.
I had a coach show us a bunch of Le’Veon Bell film on how he’s patient before hitting the hole. A good linebacker does the same just on the other side of the ball. Shuffle, shuffle, shuffle, explode
I was fortunate to compete and play but even if you didn't play I believe a coach needs to be able to demo and understand what his athletes go through. Too much critiques from people that never been in the game
Can't wait til I'm settled somewhere so I can coach. I miss it dearly and get aggravated watching d-1 and even pros throw the fundamentals out the window wondering how they gave up a 40 yard play.
If you gotta be taught to come down hill aggressively as a LB. I think you might wanna consider switching to a different position. I dig the passion coach! Let's gooooo
Important tips for EVERYONE. DO NOT put your head in front of the player (that why defensive players get hurt while tackling, for example Kam Chancellor). You are basically putting your head in front of the momentum and in the long run you’re going to develop neck problems (or get knocked out). Use your hands, why wouldn’t you use your hands? Less chance of a player breaking your tackle. If you’re going low, try to grasp the player behind their knees as this will take them down 99 percent of the time. Use your legs and drive the tackle. Most players break tackles because the defender doesn’t drive with their legs and goes down immediately. PUSH. IMPORTANT: If you want to hit hard take a big step and then hit. Put your leg in front of the defender, (between their legs if they’re coming towards you). This basically turns you into a slingshot and generates a lot of power. Also if you’re going low, drop your legs, not your body. You may develop back problems.
Yes!!! And show them how to shed blocks and get down hill too. Lost art, lots of over pursuit, out of positions from avoiding blocks out there. I like the 🔥 and energy in coach.
I know its been two years but what he was talking about was more than pad level. He was talking about pressing an angle so that you can ensure that you get to use that good pad level. There's a technique to aggressively close an angle on the ball carrier, that's what he was teaching.
thanks coach kav for helping me out and I just learned new things from you I really appreciate it and I hope you could make more videos and inspire other athletes out their who wants to get better...👏💯
When I played, I didnt have the killer instinct, but I was an incredible athlete. My DC was exactly like you, he had to change how he coached me specifically, some guys need that more technical side of the game and not the gung-ho style. I would suggest taking your "softer" players in for a 1-on-1 and teaching them how to downhill tackle, fit the gaps, etc. I'm not saying they need special treatment, I'm saying sometimes they overthink it. Also, make sure all their equipment fits right, always make sure their helmet is secure so they can go hard every play.
The key to cutting the runner off and not get juked is keep your lead foot forward like a shuffle so you can open your hips and still make the tackle if the runner cuts inside
Reminds me of my coach when I was in school, my coach told me that he wanted my spit in their ear hole 🤣🤣 I love these tough coaches there's not very many of them left out there that make you work like that and work that hard
wow thanks and one last thing if I do go downhill should I just wrap up and drive or trying to aim for the hips and wrap up which allows me to lift them?.. im just trying to make a good tackle because running backs are normally big..?
Think about running through a running back. Don't let him run into you. Always maintain leverage and then close the gap on the RB. Think of lifting him with your whole body. Not just your arms.
@@CoachKavanaugh I love it coach. That was my mentality when I played middle linebacker in the mid 90s, run through him. Make sure he feels your hit instead of you feeling his. If you put in your mind your gonna lay this guy out, then you just might.
Question: What are the minimum physical "stats" (ie.. Ht, Wt, ect.) that an aspiring Football Player should have who's interested in playing at any of the Linebacker positions??
I don't think there is a minimum stat requirement. There is in recruiting but that has little to do with your ability to play. You have Demacus Ware's out there and Cato June's Both can play. You just need to be a baller.
Coach I weigh da 120 pounds and was da soft at tackling and got trucked everday in practice. But now that I saw this video in practice during Oklahomas they call me Ray Lewis.
I call it commiting. Make the commitment that your coming up to take him out. Period. If you come up fast and hard he won't have time to do anything but take the hit. Almost surprise him! That should happen even on option plays where there could be a pitch to another running back. Hit the next back out, but commit to it! Demolish him, whether he pitches or not. Trust that your teammates will pick up the next back out.
Hey Coach Kav, my 14 y.o. son plays the mike position on defence. How do you find the balance between going in flat out on a blitz but staying in control so that the QB doesn't simply side step you making you miss the tackle ? I've seen many young kids go flat out getting into the backfield only to miss the QB at the last moment. Thanks.
This is a balance I even struggle with. I never want to take that hungry dog out of the athlete on a blitz yet don't want him to be too wild. So control comes from knowing where you are and also where the QB is trying to escape too. When he cuts through the line and its able to approach the QB he should focus on angles that pressure the QB to where he wants him to go. This way the escape option for the QB is in the same pursuit angle for him.
Jonathan, The best you thing you can do to get off blocks is to never let them touch you. First, your anticipation of the play. Second your reaction, Third your angle. If you are good on those three you will have very few guards that can cut you off and block you. If you don't and you end up in OS mode and you are in a poor position than the past thing to is to use your hands and strike quickly.
1 thing you could try is to hit the lead blocker super hard so you ricashe off of them and can see where the play is going and from there it's shuffle, read, run
coach i had a good freshman season and i have potential to do big things in football but how do i adjust to bigger players since i will be plaing varsity next year?no .. im 6'2 185lbs and can max 225 on bench
Good to hear man. post your HL film below. When adjusting to bigger guys just beat them to the spot. A lot of smaller players wait and when you do that they get to use their size. If you beat them to the point of contact, you will be in a better position for the play. Never wait.
