My first Kiss record, back in 1983, was Unmasked. So there was no internet to tell us who played what. But I keep wondering if the fans noticed the completely different (and let's face it, technically superior, not necessarily better) drumming. You can let a musician go uncredited, but you can't expect everybody to completely ignore the fact that someone else is playing. As good as Anton Fig is (we all know that), I wonder why they didn't tell him to tone it down a bit. It's like they were hoping the fans noticed Peter was not on the record. So I ask anyone who was already a fan in 1979/1980: did you notice, from the first audition, that there was something odd? That it wasn't Peter who was playing?
I knew at the time in 1980 that it wasn't Peter playing; as you said, the drums were too perfect, almost Neil Peart-ish especially on Ace's "Two Sides Of The Coin", and totally not Peter's style of playing.
You could also hear it on Dynasty that something has changed. Peter only played on one song there. But it got a little bit covered with the change of style leaning more towards Disco (Dynasty) and Pop (Unmasked). There was a break after Alive II with the solo albums, the Phantom Movie and so on ...
When I listen to Unmasked for the first time didn't know Peter was not playing, I only tough "Peter sounds diferent, he has improved his technique. Now he can play double bass drum!". I discovered the true years later.
