The only one I was surprised not to see on here was the SA-X from Metroid Fusion. You are able to hide away from its eery stepping sound effects for a good chunk of the game building that tension and then you get to the one sequence you can't evade it and honestly I feel that whole sequence is the one thing that sets Fusion apart from every other Metroid game in the series. A defining moment for sure!

My pick for the best chase sequence is an oldie but a goodie. King Zing from DKC2. You're forced to play as Rambi, which means gross, fast movements in a tight obstacle course. There's not much to collect other than bananas in the area, but navigating that honeycomb maze while that giant invincible bee chases you...and let's not forget the sudden, loud synth music picking up just as the giant frackin' hornet appears on the screen. I nearly crapped myself when I first saw that on the screen. Ay caramba...

A fair point...that game was...mmm...rough, to put it mildly: I thought it was aight, though...not great, just...aight. Though I am reminded, for some reason, of Egoraptor's Sequelitis video on Ocarina of Time vs. Link to the Past, where he says how, technically, LttP is a 3D game, but with a selective Z-axis. I dunno why that popped in to my head. Though now I'm curious...would you count Sonic Labyrinth as a 3D game? It's been a while since I've played that, but I don't remember 3D playing as big a part in it as 3D Blast. Side note, there was an upgraded Saturn port of 3D Blast and its music is just...wow... I don't got much else to say, just...wow. :O

I know that it's not as suspenseful as some on these entries on the list, but Breath of the Wild's Guardians the first time you encounter them and they did it again in Tears of the Kingdom with Gloom Hands. You have no way to beat them, the music is going, and if you don't get away the first time, they k.o. you because you are early game.

  • @bluestreaker9242
    @bluestreaker9242 2 месяца назад +3

I knew there was gonna be a moment from one of the Ori games in here: it's one of the defining features in them. What makes them so much more impactful is when you're trying to do an "Immortal" run of them, where you try to beat the whole game without dying once; when you're trying your damnedest not to die, those chase scenes are suddenly 1,000x more harrowing, because one mistake can be ABSOLUTELY FATAL! Do you have *ANY* idea how heart-wrenching it is to make it to the final chase with Kuro in Blind Forest, only for you to come up just short right before the finish line? It's the kinda soul-crushing defeat that just...never truly leaves you...like the emotional scars from the story. It wasn't my fault...IT WASN'T MY FAULT! T.T

  • @justinfarischon7868

I don't know if this counts because you are the chaser instead of the chasee. But the Goht boss fight in Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask is a great battle. It's so much fun chasing after Goht as Goron Link, ramming into his legs, launcher yourself off ramps like a projectile buzz saw on to his back. Then you gradually see him becoming more damaged, as he starts to become more frantic, launching more attacks at you. With the fight finishing as he loses control, slamming into a wall, burying himself in debris.

The end of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, where you have to escape from Darth Vader. It’s one thing to watch him strangle Imperial officers and massacre rebel troops in the movies, it’s another thing to actually confront him, find out he’s waaaaaaaaaay out of your league, and run away just barely out of his reach.

While the Sandworm is probably the best escape sequence in WotW on a mechanical level, my favourite one will always be the first Wellspring one. The music is soooo good. Not to mention the callbacks to the Ginso Tree, which was the OG Ori escape sequence (and probably still my favourite overall in the series).
Shout-out to the mid-boss fight sequences in Mora's and Shriek's fights, too. Those were *epice*

  • @ekimmak

"Don't Make A Sound" in Pizza Tower.
It is a complete upheavel of the game, suddenly being this horror facsimilie of Five Nights at Freddy's. But you're still playing the tight, speedy platforming of Peppino.
Littered throughout the level are robots with flashlights. If they spot you, you have 5 seconds to kill them before they raise the alarm (unless you taunt. Taunting them is offensive enough to trigger the alarm immediately) and the local Toppin Monster wakes up, and starts hunting you down. Most of these guys are optional, but sometimes, they put a door that's only open when the alarm is raised, forcing you to deal with them hunting you across this part of the level (and every secret has one of these at the start, for extra pressure).
After a while, it won't seem so bad, but then you get to the end, you see an alarm door, and then look behind you, and every single Toppin Monster is resting there, waiting for that alarm to be raised.
And then you get to the escape sequence, and pick up a shotgun, which will one-shot the otherwise immortal Toppin monsters, for some sweet revenge.

I give the last section of Rambi Rumble in DKC2 a shoutout just for how much of a jumpscare it is thanks to the drastic change in music and the sudden appearance of GIANT BEE CHASING YOU. I genuinely dreaded that part for a number of years because of how much it scared me, and my phobia of bees and wasps did not help in the slightest.
Muncher Marathon in DKC Returns is similarly great and terrifying.

One chase sequence I adore is in A Plague Tale Requiem, in chapter 4 (I think) you'll have to get back to your brother while tons of rats are after you, there is one part where you even have to run on top of buildings, it's fantastic.

  • @TheRoflcer

(Used to be) a big Warcraft Fan, played the pre-mmo games, read several of the books. Probably in the 10% if not lower of World of Warcraft players that read the quest-dialogue given to the player for why the NPC's wanted certain objectives done, and also read most of the ingame books as well.
Not an MMO guy, and If I hadn't loved Warcraft's story at the time of WoW's release I would never have played it for long.
So you can imagine how geeked out I'd be at the last released dungeon for Wrath of the Lich King where after defeating Falric and Marwyn, you team back up with either Jaina or Sylvanis and run the fuck away from Arthas himself as he toys with you by creating giant icy-blocks ahead of the player and sends minions to keep the stress on you, knowing (Or rather believing) that you have nowhere to escape to at the end of the hallway anyway.

The hat trick of Pit of Saron, Forge of Souls, and Halls of Reflection, are a big part of what made WotLK the GOAT of WoW dungeons. Everything built up Arthas as the BBEG of the expansion, including how the penultimate dungeon had you running away from him while he strode towards you, inevitable doom in tow.

The chase scenes I remember most from my childhood were the SA-X encounters in Metroid Fusion. Especially because in my early playthroughs, I was never sure when it could show up, AND my lack of expertise caused me to make some wait-for-it-to-leave sequences INTO chase scenes (that I often didn't escape from).
Metroid Dread leaned hard into that as well, with many more threats, but at least those were confined within specific areas.

Probably more obscure and maybe not a chase scene by definition, but the most anxiety I ever had was on Gameboy's Castlevania Adventure Stage 3: First you got spikes coming from the ceiling and you need to outrun them and destroy some mechanisms to keep the from crushing you, then comes a long vertical climbing section with spikes coming from below and some very tight jumps on a slightly annoying jump mechanic (you jump very high but never as far as you'd expect, so even jumps that look rather easy are very precise) and some mandatory drops from very high, taking you even close to the spikes chasing you. Finally, there's another section where you have to fight your way to the left with spikes pushing in from the right, packed with enemies and of course some sections where you have to walk right towards the spikes, meaning you can never slow down if you want to outrun those spikes. By the time you reach the stage boss, you're so high on adrenaline, you will always get beaten even though the boss is not very hard, but that means you have to play the whole stage again to get another shot. I believe I was never able to beat that stage as a child. The music in that stage was awesome though.

Gonna go for a bit of an unconventional one and say the Dante/Raido chase in Shin Megami Tensei III. Bit odd for an RPG to have a chase, but it works.
Being chased down by Dante, his battle music getting louder as he gets closer and shooting you to stall you and deal damage outside of combat which never happens, and if he catches you he kills one of your party members and sends you back to the start of the puzzle.

My favorite is easily the Darth Vader sequence at the end of Jedi Fallen Order.
It's short, sweet, tense and it makes you not just watch, but experience the reason Darth Vader is to be feared.
