I've got a suggestion for a future reaction video for you!! It was a #1 Soul and Dance hit and a top 10 hit (#8) on the Billboard Hot 100!! The song is called The Rain and the singer is Oran "Juice" Jones(insert play on words here)!! This song has notoriety to it, indicated by the end of the song, and that's all that I'm going to say about it so that I don't ruin it for you!!

I love how Luke keeps looking over at Tracy, like he cant believe he's on stage with one of his heroes.

As a guitar geek, one of my favorite things about this is that Tracy is playing a guitar built by Canadian luthier Judy Threet. Chapman had owned it for years (8?) and Threet was bowled over when she heard Chapman had chosen to play it here. Her reaction can be found online by searching Judy Threet, who deserves the attention for her beautiful guitars.

When I first heard this song, I bought the CD and wore it out! She's such a talented songwriter.

Very rare for two stars to come together and and not compete but just make a super special moment. The respect they have for each other is obvious with the reactions to each other they show.

I saw a bootleg version of this that was filmed from the audience. There was a big screen onstage so what the audience saw was basically what we saw in the video. The audience applauded when they recognized the opening guitar chords, but when the camera panned up and they saw Tracy's face, they just went crazy. I thought that was such a cool moment of respect towards Tracy from all her fans.

One of the songs that defined my listening in my younger days. Not only does Luke Combs do a wonderful job, but seeing the song bringing the amazing Tracy Chapman some of the attention she so deserves is so satisfying. I'm THRILLED to see and hear her again.

I absolutely love the beginning of the performance, when Tracy starts playing the guitar and the crowd is going crazy, and she finally gives this big smile right before she starts singing. It's one of those "you hope they'll remember you, but they never forgot you" moments.

This was an incredible collaboration between two unique artists. It was the best performance of the night.
Totally agree with your assessment about today’s performances. The slower, simpler arrangements that softly touch the soul are rare. You can tell the audience is loving it. ❤

It reminds me of something like, a Des'ree : ' You Gotta Be' or a Bic Runga : 'Sway' ... so good, & this song deserved it's comeback ! , Thanks Luke, & certainly thanks Tracey !!

I was lucky to see Tracy Chapman live in one of the Amnesty International Concert. She was so good! She did a duo with Peter Gabriel on "Don't Give Up." It was electrifying.
My friend in grad school knew Tracy in college.

This moment was so special. Something was healed between Gen X and Millenials. Taylor standing front row not caring cause "Why aren't you standing for this?" Brandi Carlile and her wife having Lilith Fair flashbacks. Gorgeous.

Love Love Love this song. Loved it in 1988. Love it in 2024. So happy that this song was introduced to a whole new generation. My only criticism is I would have loved harmonies. But I get that they didn’t want to change the vibe of the song.

Chapman has become almost a recluse in recent years - not performing, recording or giving interviews. There was a "little" buzz before the Grammy's that she "might" show up, so when the crowd realized it was actually her there that's part of the reason they went a little crazy (and for the little grin on her face :) ).

The fact that they don't go into harmonies on the chorus drove me nuts: no reason not to, and it would have sounded amazing. That being said, love this performance. Just the cheers from the crowd when they realize it's Tracy playing is enough to warm your heart. Song speaks for itself, and it's why I love that Luke didn't change the gender pronouns when he covered it: it was just a song he loved, and just he wanted to sing it. That it wound up doing so well is icing on the cake, as they say...

In the duet parts you know Luke is holding back out of total respect for the brilliance of Tracy. There are a few female singers that as they get older their voices go from being amazing to stratospherically good. Apart from Tracy, Joni Mitchel is another. Listen to the original of Both Sides Now then the version from 2000 to see what I mean
