If you understood the extent and sophistication of counterfeit manufacturing and laundering (even through Nike-owned bricks and mortar shopfronts!) you'd realise that there's almost no certainty that many shoes are authentic these days. You need to be crystal clear on your reasons for contradicting Seth, who holds the shoes in his hand, wears them, and cuts them into pieces - vs you looking at them on your screen, prompted to label them fakes merely because Seth has raised the question himself. SJD reviews running shoes for a living, is completely independent and self-evidently appears to be measured and fair-minded. Dare I suggest that you wouldn't be claiming they're fakes if he hadn't raised the possibility before discounting it?

So, having watched and read so many reviews on this shoe I thought I’d try it. I’ve run in the 4%, VF next% and the alphafly. All different and all excellent in different ways. I’ve also bought a couple of pairs of shoes I didn’t get along with in the last year or so. The Pegasus 36 and the Hoka Rincon (fun, light, but low quality upper that gave me blisters). So while I’ve liked some Nike products, I wouldn’t class myself as a ‘fanboy’ and was prepared to not like the tempo next%. If I’d wasted my money, I’d be a bit annoyed, but it’s kinda collateral damage. I accept that maybe 1 in 4 purchase of brand new models might not be for me and that it’s worth it to find the right shoe in the scheme of things. So. Onto the next%. I couldn’t disagree more with Seth and some of the other reviewers on this shoe. Firstly, the build quality on my new black ones is superb. I’ve seen videos showing shoddy workmanship and finishing. We’re these genuine? Or maybe they were early or pre-production versions? Or just a bad batch. I don’t know, but mine look, and feel very premium. I just went for an 8 mile tempo on a wet road. I’m 50, so my tempo pace is 6:30 to 7:10 miles. At that pace I thought the ride was very confidence inspiring. The wide heel and forefoot provide huge lateral stability, decent grip (I didn’t slip like at least one other reviewer complained about) and a compliant ride. They are not cushy like a full zoom x alpha or vapor next% but I found them firm, grippy and energetic. The roll is very natural but less aggressive than the carbon plate (a bit more forgiving). The heel strike is comfortable but not squishy and the forefoot spring and rebound very strong. The arch is neutral and not pronounced so not good if you need more support. I have a medium arch and they are absolutely perfect for me. The heel grip and upper are great. No hot spots or movement for me. The soles do slap the pavement a bit because the outsoles are clearly engineered for more miles. I had headphones in so didn’t hear them much but I can see that if you were listening to them then might affect your perception of the shoe. Overall I think they are a big upgrade on the peg 2 turbos (of which I’ve burned through 3 pairs). They are very different, but if you’ve run a race in the alphas they are, indeed a good training partner to them. For the record, I have 5 shoe models in rotation, and run about 2300 miles a year. I think I’ve approached assessing these shoes neutrally. I was fully prepared to come on here and agree with you. But I cannot. I’d give them four stars out of five and I’d recommend them to others based on info about their running (I’m 5’ 11’, 145 lbs, and run half and full marathons).

My biggest disappointment for a shoe purchase for 2020 was the Nike React Infinity Run. I bought them because of the claim that they help to prevent injuries, but every time I wear them for more than 5 or 6 miles I end up with blisters on my achilles. Just to wear them I end up having to put a band-aid on my feet, so I usually only wear them when I do short second run on a day (for like 3 or 4 miles).
That said, I like the Saucony Endorphin Speed’s so much that I’ve purchased 3 pairs already. Today I got the first pair to around 170 miles, and I love them as much in that mile as I did on mile 1.

QD: for me the alphafly was actually the most disappointing considering the price. They felt too clunky to me for a race shoe & properly turnover. They made me realize that just how truly awesome the Vaporfly next% are.
The tempos worked good for me in steady hill runs where the additional power in each step “activated” the ride more. I’m also 170lb tho so I can definitely see the weight being a major factor. These would probably be great had Nike tuned the air pod pressures according to shoe size.
These zoom pods are very similar to what they used in some lebron shoes (albeit different pressures), and he’s a powerful guy in an explosive sport... so they’re definitely durable for sure.

Purple Helmeted Yogurt Slinger good point but I wouldn’t be surprised if his alphas were tuned differently tho. I’m guessing he prob generate more power for his weight than the avg runner to “activate” the shoe. Plus that 2hr pace is not a real “turnover” pace (e.g. 5k pace) for him, if that makes sense.
Alphas are definitely still good shoes tho compared to other Carbon shoes on the market, I’m just saying it was kind of a let down after the Vaporfly next%. The next% just feels so much more cohesive and you feel one with those shoes rather than always noticing the alphaflys are on your feet.

I guess that's why they keep the Vaporfly in the line up. I run with the VF and these are by far the fastest running shoes i ever used BUT i also struggle in the the VF because my technique and biomecanics are not as good as the best. I think they have a pretty specific use. They’re definitely heavy, but the midsole is pretty “powerful”. Tbh I definitely agree that lighter runners like Seth would not like these shoes. They felt really good to me for runs where stride length and power is the focus. It’s definitely noticeably harder to turnover in these, but I also had the same feeling about the alphaflys compared to the vaporflys. For me these worked really well on gradual and sustained hills where you run with a little bit of power. On really steep hills the high stack kind of get in the way of turning over. These also feel like they’ll last for a loooioong time
I do like these better than the zoom flys.

Purple Helmeted Yogurt Slinger Yeah, I think it really depends on your weight and how many shoes are in your rotation. I like to have shoes for different uses so these slot in a specific niche for me. The heavier the broader the use range would be I think. For me personally, these felt great for steady climbs or rolling runs. I can probably use them for a tempo too but they didn’t feel like they quite want to turn over on the flats (same feeling I had in the alphaflys).

Trust me the Tempo Next% is the best Nike running shoe available for guys that are not 52kg Eliud Kipchoge size.
I weigh about 92kg (gym bro) and Vaporflys are simply unusable for my bodymass. I sold mine after a 20km run that left me with severe forefoot pain cause the narrow heel section collapsed in every direction possible and led to a very unnatural torsion of my whole foot.
So every heavy runner should get either the Alphafly2 or the Tempo Next%.
Alphafly1 and Vaporflys are the best way for getting a lot of ligament problems because of their ridiculously narrow and soft heel construction.

I completely agree with the shoe controlling your run part. You’ll have to contact the ground in a very specific (leaning forward) angle to feel the air zoom pods.
I was skeptics at first because it felt kinda clunky and heavy. But I ran a PR two days ago during a work out. They made the tempo speeds so easy for me.
I would have appreciated a lighter weight, but these are pretty solid tempo shoes.

Basically I don't wanna remember this year.
Nike RenewRun was first purchase and after a 1 km it cut my Achilles- like it was sword. I think that scaling from small to big foot is something designers don't get well. Some parts must have stronger , firmer pillars, needles, pockets if you like, so that arch of foot have certain ease while running. They have destroyed perfect low budget shoe by making back of shoe angled and strong. Every other back of shoe in Nike arsenal have straight and not angled back. I have long foot. US 13. 31cm. And shoe was acting like trap. Heel , I mean back of shoe is very hard, not as soft as in Adidas. Adidas as Under Armor practices cutting out that part near Achilles. Less triboelectricity, static parasitic currents that make blisters, cuts. Bottom of RenewRun is heavy. And drop from heel to toe should be 8mm (maybe more). I don't remember exact drop, but it has high heel that is making you, sorry forcing you to run and not walk. It is ok. I don't see issue there. But because of all that heaviness and extra Lunarlone around heel( Infinity design), as you see on fortified middle age castles and angled back of that plastics or metal towards Achilles..it basically is trap that hurts like hell. Press middle with ach and that is it. I had luck. They gave me money back. I would be more happy if they could cut that middle region of back. Anyways.. Another thing is it is very warm shoe. After 1 km my sock was wet like if I put in the pool. It was raining day before and moisture was present. But I am telling you: Under Armour Sonic 2 upper is my choice every time over any of the Nike's. Nike is doing brilliant, genius, pioneer work on middle cushion section, and Under Armour on upper. Socks in Under Amour Sonic 2 were always dry. I could felt warmth of asphalt on very warm summer days- like lava and some extra statics there, but any shoe would act on 40 degrees of Celsius similarly. Under Armour Machina shoe laces are like soft teddy bear. Another score for UA.
Under Armour Sonic 2 was other purchase. It has an amazing upper. Upper is simply the UA thing. HOVR is under heel and not front?! Wtf UA?! I made mistake by paying more for older version and not new Machina. Another thing after 3 weeks of running- front , which is Charged or EVA broke. By watching from outside one cannot tell. But inside was like when you put plastics in fire and add oxigen - and than watch how form is deformed. I have extra kilos( than I had 114 kg and now 105 kg). I bougth these instead of Machina which was cheaper because of the feeling I have had when I entered it for the first time. Also there is a engineering problem with their cushion. HOVR olefin is enclosed in net is not so good idea of cushion. Here is why. It is like honey in plastic bag, and than fortified with Eva around. Basically firmness is Eva. And we know how bad Eva is for running. They talk about softness..but let me tell you ..there is no softness there. Buy Duramo 9 and feel how hard it is. Germany done good chemistry job with both Eva and Boost. So when Eva hardness lose that firm grip that honey is spilled all around and basically all cushion is gone. I love the design, colors, but those are more for causal than real marathon. I mean I would choose Nike every time over Asics, UA or Adidas. But Asics with gels is doing far better construction job than UA. I tried Boost 19 once and Solar Boost. Amazing. But for running I don't know. Maybe?! I am glad that runners have more options thou. And I hope that new iterations will be better.
Nike Peg 37 was another choice. But price is 155$ (and everywhere else in world 119$) was no brainer. But I have tried shoe in store. It looks gentle to me. But who knows. I have a friend that used Peg Turbo 2 since February and after half year of running, 30 km every day except Monday for recovery lazy walk day..it look like new. what?! I know. I don't think that rubber is any shorter that when it left factory. And he has at least 30 kg less..That is scaling.. Content can't be same for different weights that pressure down nearly same area..Basically I bought UA Sonic 2 instead of Peg 37 because at time I had no number. I am looking forward to Peg 38. I saw AirZoom Structure 23 as soft edition.
Thanks for suggesting Achilles issue and shoes for less painful running. Hoperfully my financial situation will become better. I don't have much of choosing in between good running shoes eve if I had money. That sucks. Another thing is that every shoe that leaves factory cost around 40$ and in stores it is 4 times or less of that price. I would like to see less freedom in using Eva and more in using real materials that put runner's health as priority. But it is just my fantasy. Because people simple agree with any shitty shoe and poverty over joyfull running experience. In highly polluted areas with heat plants and small houses "options" running on fresh air is real priviledge. I am little angry of myself not being smart enough to change things for better. I don't know if people around the world is aware of how many billions of $ is pent of heating plants, filters and all other lies of energy crisis... Cutting Gordian know never was easy and for easily fainted.
Running- I look upon it as adding health. And I am asking myself: " what kind of priviledge is having couple of shoes for running? (beside roof, meal, clothes, job)" Another thing..about basketball shoes( not offtopic)..Nobody is making outdoor shoe. Because of all that Eva cushion which last a month or less and I have never been wittness to many more Achilles issues from playing street ball basketball among friends and others that play. After all that expensive "softness" we have serious problem to solve. And I know that standard for runner shoe is way above of that for baskeball. So there it is.. There are many options to add from running to basketball. Beside extra rubber for outdoor basketball shoe. And runner shoes have a lot to explore and change. Foam, bubble, carbon dust, triboelectrical net in cushion, rubber springs, maybe even aerogels, and some other tensegrity rope systems, you name it.
    All best and happy running!

I don’t know what Nike is doing but with this year releases they are going backwards. The Alphafly is ok, but still think Vapourfly is better. Instead of making lighter, more forgiving shoes with natural feel, they come up with these ugly heavy shoes. I prefer the old models of Nike. The Nike Pegasus Trail, great trail shoe, they just had to replace midsole to react and make the upper a bit lighter and more breathable. They destroyed it by making the Trail 2 instead. Same with Pegasus 36. Not impressed by Nike at all. That’s why my new lineup will be Asics Glideride, Saucony Endorphin Speed and Hoka EVO Speedgoat goretex. I’m still hoping the Vomero 15 will be updated in the good direction.

Watched this one and the ones about the alphaflys - as a 6 foot, 160lbs marathoner... i'm happy to add an ounce to a shoe for the increase in cushion on the landing. after running Boston a few years back in Lunar Tempos, I learned quickly how much shoes can make a difference over that many miles. The Next%'s were great and although I havent raced in the AlphaFlys yet, I'm confident it will be a huge upgrade for me in terms of reducing the impact of each step. I think you're exactly right with regards to being too light to appreciate the added cushion+rigidity.
I would love to see a video comparing the Pegasus turbo to some of these shoes (Nike Tempo Next%, endorphin speed, Brooks hyperion tempo). I have been using the Turbo Pegs for tempos/fast long runs... so I'm a little confused as to what Nike is doing with this shoe...

Actually the shoes in the outlets (for Nike at least) aren’t rejects. We shipped them from the regular Nike stores to outlets. They just use outlets to move product fast that didn’t sell as quickly as the best colors or models. It’s actually a good way to get the shoes you want. Some of the shoes are also brought in as buy backs from places like Kohl’s or other cheaper retailers for low grade models. Rest assured, you can get first quality in outlets from Nike. (I don’t work for them anymore either)

    1) Hoka Carbon X - Very comfortable feel, but after 20k my feets hurt
    2) Alphafly - Feel very bulky and not lightweight for racing
    3) Vaporfly next% - For me they are best racing shoes ever!
    4) Tempo next% - For speed training they are not bad, but Prise 200$ is too much for it
    5) Pegasus 37 - Normal daily trainer at gravel
    6) Pegasus 36 Trail - Very comfortable and lightweight for trail running
    7) Nike wildhorse 6 - Not bad, but pegs are more comfortable
    8) Hoka Rincon 2 - Feels more lightweight and cushioned than Carbon X. Also speed is same.

This is why we shouldn't put to much emphasis on shoe reviews. I LOVE the Beacon 1 and 2. By far my favorite shoe of the last couple of years or so. I am around 180lb. 6ft 3 toe striker and they just seem to work wjth my footstrike - I love that it is so flexible, they seem to disappear under my feet. My toes seem to like flexing around 90 degrees to the sole of my feet on toe off. I've even run a marathon in them. My next favorite is the Razor 3 which is similar. And I don't get a long with stiffer shoes with a rocker - the Gliderides were a heavy fail for me, for instance.

Hi Seth, great video, Before I get to your question of the day, I agree with you about the Tempo Next %. I brought a pair, which after testing them thought I would sell, but then I discovered I destroyed my 10k PB in this shoe so I kept it for any 10k races I enter. It did seem a really fast shoe, maybe its a placebo thing but.....Any way most dissapointing shoe of 2020 was the Brooks Ghost 13. A lot of runners I know swore by it. I had never had a pair so was looking for an easy day/long miles shoe and thought why not. After buying a pair I was thoroughly dissappointed. They just felt flat and dead to me. So much so that after just 6 miles into an easy run my legs felt tired and I was struggling to run in them. I cut the run short, went home and changed into a different shoe and continued with the run. I repeated it 4 times over the next few months, just to be sure and it was the same every time. I am sure the Ghost is a great shoe, but for me it just didnt work out. Great channel.

This is my first comment on a Seth James review and I’d like to know why I didn’t watch your review BEFORE I bought these Tempos because the review is SPOT ON! Seriously, these were the best feeling shoes I ever put on my feet. Snug, but comfortable, roomy in the toe, but not slushy. Firm, but cushioned. I loved these shoes right up to the point that they started to wreck my left foot. I was 12 miles into a run, pacing a friend through a Marathon, when my foot started to hurt. I stuck with it through 16 miles after which I could barely walk the last six blocks home. Weeks later, my foot is almost recovered. Was still wondering whether I should give the shoes a last try when I watched this review. Thanks!

QD: New Balance shoes that I know are or were great shoes just don’t seem to work with my feet and mechanics. Mainly I find myself between sizes on them. So it’s not a reflection on NB but rather just not a good fit for me. HOKA also didn’t work well for me in the long run (literally). The Rincon was my kind of shoe in terms of light weight and firmer midsole, but even though my feet aren’t wide I got a slight callous (semi-blister) on the inner side of both big toe metatarsals. Moreover, the midsoles started feeling flat after 150 miles.
Nike is such an empire. I’ve never felt like their shoes were a good fit for me either; there are so many fabulous shoes now to choose from. It feels like they’re dumping mediocre and even lousy models into the marketplace lately to ride on the coattails of their success with the Vaporfly series and rein in their brand-loyal buyers, while controlling the availability of the Vaporfly’s to play hard-to-get. To me it would be a turnoff even if I did love their shoes.

First impression of the Tempo Next % were they are OK. Noisy underfoot and tight in the toe box so hoping the upper stretches a bit. No problems at 5k with the heel and lockdown was good. I don’t have the Alphaflys (yet) so cant compare but at the minute actually think I prefer Zoom Fly 3 for tempo/intervals but time will tell

QOD: Nike Pegasus Turbo 2. I got them thinking it'd be a slightly better improvement over my Pegasus 35 Turbos which I loved. The foam is just not as soft as the 35 Turbos and I found it to be less comfortable in the upper as well as less breatheable. I'm still using them in my training but I'd give the Turbo 2s a 6.5/10 versus 9/10 for the 35 Turbos.

Although I didn’t dissect them, for $160 the external construction was terrible, the shoes just felt funny when I put them on, and lastly when I scanned the bar code on the box they came in it gave me an error saying it didn’t exist. I did not purchase them from Saucony but have been in contact with them and they confirmed the shoes aren’t fakes and apologized for the quality. My most disappointing purchase was the Brooks Ghost 12. I didn’t pay full price good job really. I found the midsole very hard not very forgiving. I’m a heavier runner so I was surprised it was such a firm midsole. The drop is also a problem 12mm is too aggressive played havoc with my shins and calves. The quality of some of the Nike premium shoes is shocking. For the price you pay and for the fact they release them in batches they should be top quality.

My 2020 worst purchase. New Balance Fuelcell Prism. I have a bad knee. One of my foots strikes neutral and the other overpronates so I run in neutral and stability shoes. These were suppose to provide both. I just did five miles in them. I was down for two days. Now I can't get rid of them.

I also have the same issue. I strike neutral with one foot and the other overpronates. What shoes do you use? Thanks

I just bought the Clifton 7 (3 days ago) and I feel my knees way better. I have run 2 times in them, one 8km run and today a 10km run. Until now, all seems in the right direction regarding this shoe. Btw, have you tried the Saucony Endorphin Speed? Thanks

I have these shoes as well. Used them twice. Agree with your statement that the shoe controlled me, and not the other way around. Also they are soooo loud. It is embarrassing running in them, the slapping sound when they hit the pavement. Started noticing pain in my groin after two days with these. Probably not related, but it ended up being Gilmore's groin.

Hey Seth, to be completely honest I think the pair you bought is fake. I live in hong kong where these have already released and I've had my pair for about a month now (bought them at retail) and put around 75 miles on them. There were a couple things I noticed from your video that made me think yours were fake. The first is the upper on yours looked much looser/sloppier (as you said) than the pair I have. My pair has more of a zoom fly 2 shape and doesn't feel sloppy at all (though it's slightly roomy in the front)- its very well constructed and fits nice. The second thing I noticed was the insole, it's completely different than the one in my shoe. The insole on my pair is actually the same as the insole on the turbo 2s where it says ZOOM. Also, the box being a different colour was strange too, mine was black.
I know you test so many shoes you can't stay on one shoe too long, but I do think its a bit of an injustice to give a verdict on the tempos when yours seemingly have problems. For what its worth, I really like my pair though I know others may not feel the same way.

Everyone in the US is getting white boxes, same with UK, so that’s interesting. Compared to other pictures and videos I do think they are real now and official weight of shoe is in line with the advertised size 9. Tough call. If they are fake, I’m impressed with the build quality that is for sure.

QD: Nike Pegasus 36 Trail. Lacks cushion and worthless on most scenarios where grip is needed. Might as well run in road shoes. Not sure I can trust buying the Peg Trail 2’s unless they made them a actual trail shoe rather than the road shoe with lugs slapped on.

I got my pair yesterday and couldn’t have had a more different experience. They didn’t feel as fast as Next% (unsurprisingly as they’re not in that category) but the ride felt very lively so I’m fairly sure the midsole was working properly.
FYI I’m on the bigger side for a runner at 6’ and 160 lbs (at my fastest at about 154, but I’ve over-indulged lately with the lack of racing). Probably 35 minute 10k sort of shape right now, but I tested these shoes at a steady 6:40 pace.

Nike seems to put out a lot of okay shoes at high prices. Enjoyed the Peg 36, but they only lasted 300 miles. Compare that to the Brooks Glycerin 18, which barely have any wear after 140 miles..

The Hoka Mach 2 was kind of disappointing because it kind of wore out really fast. When I first got it, the feel was good, but kind of firm. But after only 80 miles, the insole was destroyed and started blistering my feet. The midsole rocker also started to go away at that time which made the shoe no longer feel fast

Late to it but QD: ASICS Novablast. Can't get a lock down in it so my foot feels unstable. I then get plantar ache when out in it. Going to take the laces out from an old reliable pair as some have said that makes the difference.

Easiest way to tell fake nike are by their zoom pod units, the real pair have nylon fiber on it, looks like a bunch of string while the fake pair have some kind of airmax pilar type on their zoom pod.

Skechers gorun ride 8. Not a bad shoe by any means, but it’s heavier, bulkier, clunkier, and doesn’t offer near as smooth of a ride as Skechers gorun ride 7

I have heard from a number of people recently who say their Nike’s just aren’t up to standard. In both casual and running shoes. Not sure if it’s different factories or different standards to keep up with demands... but the quality is certainly down by all reports...which makes me very hesitant to purchase any for a while.
