Ive watched football since 1964, and I have watched great teams get knocked out of the European Cup pre Champions League, Teams knocked out in Round 1, no 2nd 3rd 4th placed clubs just League Winners, and thats what the format should be, then at least if you are knocked out, you wont have to play mid week in that comp.
The same applies with the Europa League, go back to a draw, and loses go out.
The are too many games now, and players are knackered.
The World Cup, why increase the amount of teams, have it at 8 groups of 4, winners go into a draw.
    European Championship do the same.
A two week break from Dec 20th to 3rd Jan.
And a 6 week break from June to mid July.
You dont race the likes of Frankel every week in a Group one race, the horse would collapse, and die.
You dont see Tyson Fury fighting for the heavy Weight Championship of the World Every week.
So why put Footballers through that sort of punishment.

I personally think the current gaming schedule is fine. There may be a requirement for blubs/managers to MANAGE their squad to field the best team they can game on game. It should not be re-organised to enable your best 11 to play in every single game. There is a reason you get a 25 man squad!

Reporters have the dame remit, to ask questions that revoke a response or difference of opinion, or get some information that wasn't meant to be released. He is honest, and gives his opinion, but I do believe he is also instructed to wind up guests, co hosts or callers so there is some content to debate on. They don't play competitions to pay wages, they pay wages to play competitions. The players have no choice but to play, this is their job and they can't just tell their employer no. They are also frowned upon if they turn down international duty for club football. The only solution is to lower the number of games in the knockout competitions, get rid of pre-season and all it's ridiculous travelling and reduce the number of international fixtures during the season. Premier league teams have the most intense schedules of any sporting league. Their season is 11 months long, plus summer international duty, it's actually not fair. Have a squad of 26 players. They are getting paid £100,000+ a week and can't play 3 games a week. People work 12 hour days 7 days a week to get by. I don't want to hear it.

Not to mention emergency services who by comparison get paid an absolute pittence and put their lives on the line daily, or those in support work, or the military!
Footballers should be paid by minutes on the field, then the rest of the wage budget donated to good causes, then you'll see how many really want the recovery time.

  • @kevinmckay6641

Simon is correct.Players would rather play than train.Players want to play for successful teams, which obviously means more games played compared to unsuccessful teams. Also, whenever teams are granted a mid-season break/winter break, they jet off to the USA or the Far East to play friendlies! It's ridiculous.Top players train to play at this level.Compared to pro male tennis players they have it not too bad. These guys can be on court for 3-5hrs,then play 48hrs later

  • @NazSBG
    @NazSBG 2 года назад +3

I was listening to this debate live this morning as I was driving. What came to my mind was this:
Bring in a wage cap for all players. There is no way hundreds of thousands of pounds a week are needed by the players, no way, it is obscene what some of them get. By reducing wages, and I mean by more than 10,000 or 20,000, maybe have the cap set at around 50,000 a week, that will drive down season/match day tickets prices thus allowing the blue collar working dad and his son, who are priced out of the game, to attend games.
Scrap international friendlies, they are pointless. Scrap the nations international league. Stop trying to expand the Champions league. How about having the champions league for actual champions of each European league? Plus, maybe have the winners of each European leagues major Cup (FA Cup in england) play in the European Cup. Also, scrap extra time in Cup final games and go straight to penalties after 90 minutes!
I recall, about 20 years or so ago, an article I read regarding professional sports players and the hours per week they work based on the 38 hour a week regime that regular Joe blogs works. Football players, it was stated, work about a 13 hour a week, and at the time, I believe that included match day. Tennis players were closest to 38 hour week at around 33 hours. Now, that may have changed somewhat, some 20 years later, but not by much I'm guessing.
Sadly, money has ruined the game. Players in the top leagues do earn way too much and the powers that be in football are going to continue with the forever changes to get more money out of folk who enjoy watching games, either in the stadiums or on TV and they do not care.
The careers of top level players is short but some if them in their 20's could retire tomorrow with the money they have and let's not forget the money they earn from endorsements. Sterling for instance advertising Gillette razor's, he's probable getting something like a million a year for that, on top of his Man City wages of about 100,000 a week or more!

I don't understand why Martin comes on the show, he clearly doesn't like Simon 😂 In my opinion these footballers earn eye watering, life changing amounts of money every week so they need to get on with whatever is asked of them. Not every club plays multiple times a week, for example if your name is Crystal Palace or Southampton those players only play once a week. Then, mid-table and lower down the table opposition players normally aren't good enough to get called up for International duty so even get a rest for a week or two. In addition to that, the prize money clubs receive for finishing higher up the table like in Champions League positions, could be spent on more players so that you can rotate your squad more so to accommodate the increase in fixtures and relieve tired players. ALSO, these players are of top quality, therefore going to be paid EVEN MORE. Bottom line is... Get on with it.

With all the money these players get they can hire the best nutritionists, physicians on the planet to help them recover. Instead of going out getting pissed (ie Grealish) do what players like Ronaldo do and invest in ice baths and other recovery methods to let the body heal.
If we get told to work extra hours do the majority of us moan? No! Why? Because we have to put food on the table …. Unfortunately these footballers can put food on their tables for 100 of their of lifespans and this nonsense that players have short careers…. Bull!
A doctor can work all their lives and still earn far less than a player who may play for a few years at the top. Go figure Martin

the arguments of the people in this comment section attacking Keown are just ridiculous saying "look how much they get paid" is not an argument. They are human, it's very simple science, their bodies just like ours need recovery time, the pace of the game has gone up and having fake competitions like the carabao cup, club world cup and UEFA nations league are just stupid, people that don't understand this really need to grow up and stop thinking about what others are earning, don't get upset that they are rich and we ain't, they are still made of the same materials as us.

seems like footballers want all of the upside (wages) and want to play as little as possible! it's not hard to work out, if the wages were less they wouldn't need to keep finding more revenue streams such as more games and tournaments to keep finding the money to pay these players. Simon's absolutely spot on as usual.

Not just the players though... The organisations and the club owners. The major clubs are owned by owners now that purely see the clubs as businesses, not really fans of the clubs they run, and as soon as the clubs make mega dish, they get sold to the highest bidder. Chelsea is worth 3 times more than when abramovich bought them, Liverpool will be sold for probably 3 times what was paid, same as Manchester City. Manchester United. Have probably hit their glass ceiling, and are worth probably what was paid, maybe half billion more, but not 3 times.

Very interesting point here. If most jobs make people work to point of exhaustion but are paid well, then wouldn’t it be fair for them lower the amount of work relative to a lower level of money received for that work? Seems like pretty easy calculus. Work less = paid less. Work more = pay more.
