"The BMW i3 is great fun and nippy around town, but it's very expensive to buy and has a limited range between charges." - Авто/Мото
Everybody criticizing the skinny wheels. Well if they put a normal size ones it will increase the power consumption 15-20%. So smaller tires is more suitable for a car that is originally built to save power.
Beautiful car-to-car shots you got there! We've also driven the BMW i3 now and we must say - it's really something completely different.
Hello autogfuel big fan
I love my I3 its so easy to drive and comfortable
But it's ugly outside
+irGuilty its whats inside that counts haha
Michael Martinović 5 years later I still think it’s ugly lool, but everyone has different taste
Does it have Bluetooth
@@david4l83 yes it has Bluetooth, back up camera, and self parking
the interior is super cool looking
Wish the same could be said about the exterior..
Narrowc ross Luckily you mostly have to look at the interior when owning it :-)
I’ve just got one
The electric range in winter is not great but the range extender makes up for that
You get a great view of the road and the performance is good
And it’s quiet and comfortable
Tyres aren’t too expensive and a full service at bmw was £250 including a brake fluid change
Recommended
Maybe something is wrong with me, but I quite like the outside.
Wurzelzwerg1212 yeah perhaps something IS wring with you🤨
Mr Alex ur gai
Something is probably wrong with you

yay im very happy that carbuyer is back to making videos more regulery
Fantastic review. I had no idea about these but I'm really sold on them now!!
Excellent review. Thanks Mat and team
I've seen this on the road already. It looks absolutely brilliant!!!!
Great Review Matt, I ordered one after a two day test drive, was going to buy an Audi A3 eTron which I drove in the summer as a pre production version, but The i3 is better suited to my motoring needs and I love the raised driving position. I AGREE THAT A FIRST SIGHT THE LOOKS ARE DIFFERENT. But I also think that other posters that object to the design can exercise their right not purchase one. Would love to see an i3 vs Etron road test in Auto Express!
EV cars will get cheaper just like smartphones at first were too expensive for the majority of people
yes the price probably will come down eventually, but the cost of charging them over night will sky rocket.
Stephen Grant-Davies That would be bad if you had to buy petrol despite having an electric car.
Stephen Grant-Davies Not with renewable energy sources that governments all ever the world are ALREADY getting into, plus if you go completely solar on your house (which get cheaper year by year) then it will absolutely free.
Dimitri Soto But there is not much sun in the UK.
Stephen Grant-Davies There's enough. The UK and Ireland has roughly the same amount of kWh/m2/day as Germany receives. Germany isn't too sunny either but it managed to make extreme progress with solar power. There's no point moaning about the weather. www.kingspansolar.ie/solarenergy.aspx
What a great little car. Its appeal is also helped by the thorough (and also great) review. Kudos to BMW, hats off to carbuyer.
Y no one like this car? It's so beautiful.
It's just wrong assumption ;)
I bought one and I think it's fairly ugly! Having said that, the inside is really nice, and it has the added bonus that when you're in it, you can't see the outside :-)
Andrew Robinson Why did you buy it if you think it's ugly?
Thorbjørn Madsen function over form
To me it looks modern and it gives the feeling that it’s 2018
He is slaying at Carwow
This is probably the first and only electric car i liked! And, the only one i would buy if i needed a new car. It would have been so much more awesome though, if it could do some simple, or even a light bit of wheel spin. A great review, Carbuyer! you made me like an electric car!
U don't like the Tesla Model S?
Lars Rye Jeppesen Well-- no! it was too big! if its as big as a normal car then whats the point? And im a sucker for good interior, kinda liked this one.
dipro001 I see your point.. agree.. I mean, the Model S is beautiful but way too big....
lol ya. this makes a good city runner.
Lars Rye Jeppesen tesla roadsters is being revived
Looks so fucking beautiful and futuristic.
Futuristic???
wow just clicked on this vid and did not expect to seem matt. his humor is still here
love the fact the subtitles wrote more that what Matt had said haha
"...and another cubby hole on the dash...which Rebecca will like" lol
I saw one of these in a few months ago (in brown) but unfortunately I was on the bus so I only caught a quick glimpse, and then another last week (in white) and in the same 5 minutes I saw the i8 in the next village. (I live in north Germany close to the beach and on a sunny day you see loads of nice cars :D) they both look amazing.
Absolutely right! I didn't like it either, until I saw it in flesh, I mean, in carbon. This is an impressive little car.
In other words, we don't have to waste our money on oil anymore! Thanks for the video Carbuyer!
It looks like an I8 was squashed by a truck

Hybrid frosen butter pack...i3 great for traffic light races. I always enjoy your humour during the reviews... Makes it very enjoyable to watch.
So happy you guys reviewed this :DD Model S next please ;)
im hoping for that one too, but all european reviewers are avoiding it for some reason :\
nemanja milosevic because its exclusive to USA ... not sold in EU
Ashraf Emad Of course not! Do you know how many Tesla stores there is in Norway for example? Theres even one in Denmark
lambosuperlOooh I remebered why TG dont review tesla... because In an episode they reviwed tesla roadster and said it ran out of jucie while it really didnt to make fun of it .. so tesla made a lawsuit against TG ... look it up its acutally intersting
Ashraf Emad Ugh it's sold in Europe since august..
Wow, this car sure is future ready!
I don't understand all the hate about this car... i really like it and think that it's the beginning of the generalization of the electric car, and really love the design (love it or hate it!). It's a good car, you can't deny that!
compared to other EV (excluding tesla model s) this car is the best looking EV out today, if you really look at it, it's actually not that bad looking, I kinda like it.
Can't wait for the BMW i8!
First EV car I like and would consider buying
Great idea from BMW and it is a really cool car!
I like my BMW i3 overall but there are a couple things i don't like.
1. The generator sounds like you are parked next to a riding lawnmower.
2. The cooling fan kicks on in hot weather or when ac is running and sounds like a loud cheap fan with debris stuck in it.
Took it to the dealership who responded that those 2 things are absolutely normal on the I3.
For an electric car that is supposed to be stealthy quiet when those fans kick on it is louder than a Ford pick up.
I was lucky to get to try the new VW e-UP in November, and I absolutely loved the electric power.
The i3 looks just as entertaining as the e-UP. But those tires on the i3, look very skinny and being a 19" they must be very special and therefore expensive?
This car is state of the art. Looks great, awesome performance and great range, well equipped and not too expensive!
You have been talking drugs
Don't think I would like to go out driving on a stormy Norwegian winter night with wheels that skinny, but the performance really surprises me. I also think this is one of those cars you'll drive around feeling really self-conscious about.
good review thank you, the suspensions are the same at all bmw's, more sports like , i personally like the look, it looks more futuristic
LOL at the clueless people commenting on the tires. They are SUPPOSED to be that way! They're called low rolling resistance tires and they are there for a purpose on cars like the i3...fuel economy, aerodynamics and efficiency. Not only that, but it makes the car more responsive as an ancillary benefit.
All of the reviews for this car have been very good. This car is truly visionary, and whether you like the looks or not, you cannot deny the engineering and technology that you get in this car. You get a carbon fiber tub/chassis in a car that costs a little over 40k. You don't see that in pedestrian cars. And as BMW says, all the lightweight technology from the i cars is slowly being incorporated to their more traditional cars, which is very exciting. The new M3/M4 has a carbon fiber driveshaft, roof, roof bow, trunk, front strut brace, aluminum hood and front fenders, forged aluminu suspension, composite built into the front and rear seats, and a host of other lightweight plastics, metals, and carbon composites. So the future seems very exciting, not only for the i brand, but also their more traditional cars.
Saw this car in Leipzig where it's being built, it's amazing, even though the price is rly steep @ 40 k (Euro) it's still a good leap forward. Not that electric cars will save the world but just like recycling .. it's a start. Hopefully other Car manufacturers will jump in... p.s. anyone remember the electric car built by GM in the 90s ?
That door arrangement would be good for Dogging.
Scott Pyatt really good for us dog owners.
Lmfao
@1:08, I love the biscuit comparison
I think that this is a very good car because its not like the ampera or the Leaf because of the fact that it does give you the range but yes you would have to stop often at petrol stations
BMW i3 just got my heart, BMW just got the right recipe, i like the way it looked futuristic.. it's adorable.. and those CF! daym... but 80miles? hmmm couldn't get a little higher, say about 100miles per charge? but anyway, this will be a bombshell..
I like your review, but I think it might be more interesting if you put the data inside the video, like power off engine, distance, or wheelbase
BMW I love you
How many hours Rex will last before requiring a rebuilt
not a fan of the exterior but myyyyy goodness the interior is so beautiful and practical.
9 years on. Would it be worth buying one for £12k with 70k miles?
lpol
absolutely, with electric cars mileage is for battery health instead of the whole car health
OH YES. Thank you based CB.
Great car, great review. I hope the next BMW i-series won't be a boxy people carrier.
What's the use of buying a car that can't go very far or, having sat nav when you can't go very far?
Avoid, consider, shortlist or buy? :-)
Ok, for anyone else grave-digging here, regarding the skinny tires:
If you compare the wheels to any other compact car, especially EVs, they really aren't skinnier! It is all about the proportions making them LOOK skinny, since we all are used to seeing 20-inch wheels with massive width on sportier cars. Yes, they look quirky from behind but they are functionally sound.
I love it very much!!!!!!I want HER
I recommend you get the one with a petrol generator
You do realise that the range extender only extends the range, you cannot run solely on the petrol motor like a chevy volt for example.
Can some tell me what the full electric range is with a full charge, before rex kicks in if it has it, I am after the ev version only but been told it's only 52miles, I was under the impression it was 100miles and then if has rex add 60 or so miles.
The EV range differs depending on the battery size. 60AH -> 80 miles, 94AH -> 110 miles, 120AH -> 160 miles. Don´t buy the REX version if not required. The little 2 cylinder generator is the biggest error source of the car. The BEV version is way more reliable.
damn. it feels strange watching mat watson on a different channel xD
He definitely a BMW guy .... He likes every freaking BMW which come along ....
Hi, nice review, so your saying it will cost "2 quid", to charge overnight? so 14 quid a week and about 60 quid a month then, not bad if you look at it like that suppose, I bet if this ever takes off, the electric companies will be hiking up the costs of electric, so we wont win in the long run. and besides these electric generating power stations, how are they powered?, Coal? Nuclear? Gas? so where is the benefit?
I think it's great car, love it!
Very interesting car worth considering is you do a lot of city driving and are well off. If I had the funds I would seriously consider getting one.
I think it's gorgeous interior and exterior:)
review the tesla model s!
To bad the car costs as much as a better looking sedan....look I'm all for green energy and green technology, but not when it costs so freakin much! tell the rich people to buy more to kick start the market and then manufacture cheaper ones so that the rest of us can get in on it.
I know right! And if some countries want to ban petrol cars they're gonna need to made cheaper versions of electric cars! And a Toyota Prius isn't gonna cut it😶 they're so expensive but so beautiful
Not the Prius the BMW😂
I fucking love it, I might be from the few but I love the exterior, this thing deserves every dime. A considering that the i8 which is much more expensive sold out for the first year of production once it was available to order, the i3 is perfect. BMW is always on the lead.
When do you guys plan to test the Tesla Model S??
The exterior definitely could have used sharper & agile styling, as the current model seems quite too chunky and boxy. Excellent engineering & performance it offers deserves face lift for sure.
Paldies par informaciju
Ground clearance of the car how much
Yes, but will it drift?
could you please do a review of the new mini 2014 please please! :)
So perfect !
amazing product from bmw!
Review the new C-Class!! Please!
Very good review. Anyone who doesn't accept this tech, is just living in the past. Better get used to it. I'm guessing we'll be seeing many more like this.
I feel silly since I was looking for Carwow's review of the i3.
Same
Zaidan I love this car
Damn you- now I need to find myself a brownie.
So,if you want to sit in the back, with no front passenger, you can't close the front door? :)
What is under the bonnet ? Another boot/fuel tank ?
Michael Kennedy Tools, steering components, wheel arches, and a shoebox sized storage compartment
Inside of that car looks better than outside.Feels like they tried to compress BMW i8 to hatchback type car and now when they're done with that - tries to sell it.
If Nissan Leaf gets a range extender version, I'd probably buy one.
I agree. Just a small motorcycle engine with NO connection to the drive wheels.
I would love to have one of these. Damn prices, though...
The "gear selector" is a "cool rocker switch".
/Facepalm
Save the manuals
True. I didn't realize this was full electric. I didn't watch the whole review. It will be a sad day when all that is available are electric cars and you simply steer, stop, and go.
crephotos Steering, stopping and going can (and are) be fun and exciting. Do you still yearn for the time when you had to crank the car? Mess around with choke? Adjust the firing of the spark plugs? How do you feel about cruise-control? electric windows? But suddenly electric motor (which has superior performance than combustion engine) and automatic transmissions is "a step too far"?
driving an automatic is boring as fuck.
***** You can add a gearbox to an electric, but it simply is unnecessary..
I'm not really a fan of Electric cars, but I like the i3. If I had to buy an electric car this is where my money would go
Look at those bicycle wheels. Allow me to roll my eyes.
What cars do the reviewers own?
wow. My MTB has wider tires... how would that thing ever drive in the snow?
Guys its a car for the future, its not for doing 200 mph or drifting it, its meant for driving around in town.
this is an interesting car for sure
great for traffic light races
Good car
Well, it's better looking than a Nissan Leaf. Although that isn't much of an achievement. But I must admit it looks quite cool in silver.
They should make a Mini Countryman like this. The carbon construction would make the car lighter, and honestly, the Countryman has better looks than the i3.
As a BMW driver let me be the first to say that this is a truly hideous contraption.
Posche 918 aside, must ALL hybrid/electric cars look like they've driven off the cover of a bad 70s Sci-fi paperback? Really? MUST THEY???
***** 2007 M6. No looker itself, granted. One day I shall have the new Gran Coupe...
Antonio GJ Actually, I think Audi has taken over from BMW as the "must-have" brand for the assholes of the world. He he.
Think you got yourself a bit stuck - Though many EV/hybrids was looking weird. and ugly earlier I will agree. But some new editions is quite decent designs; Tesla & Tesla S, Renault ZOE, The Opel Ampera is also not awkward. Then also add that a lot of traditional designs actually comes as Hybrids these days and more is right around the corner; Porsche Panamera S Hyrbrid, Porsche Cheyenne S Hybrid, Range Rover Hybrid, Mercedes Benz E 300 BlueTEC hybrid, 2013 Toyota Prius C, 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid, 2014 Porsche plug-in Panamera S E-Hybrid, 2013 Ford Fusion Hybrid, 2013 BMW ActiveHybrid 3, 2013 Ford C-Max Energi, 2013 Nissan Leaf, 2013 Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid, 2013 Audi Q5 Quattro Hybrid and the list is in fact much longer.
So even that you do not like the i3, which is a daring design exploration by BMW due to it´s normal customer base, one can´t generalize about ugly EV´s and hybrids anymore - As the technology and the eco statement of driving EV/hybrid becomes ever more present we will see a lot of Hybrids and more EVs entering the markets during the next 5-10 years time, some will be completely new automotive platforms like the i3 and i8 and others will be traditional designs.
HesteBremse Tesla isn't UGLY, granted, just dull. The rest are plug.
Quiero que ustedes hagan la prueba del bmw i3
I love this car i am getting one
This is the way GM should have done the Volt/Ampera's power train.
What do you mean, doesn't the Volt/ Ampera have the same type of powertrain setup? (ie. electric motor, with engine used as generator)
anotherone10
No, the Volt's engine can actually power the wheels under certain conditions, such as faster speeds and acceleration when the electric motor alone does not suffice.
***** The volt is a hybrid, this is a pure electric car with a petrol range-extender option.
looseunitaaw Nope. Just because a car has a petrol engine and an electric one, it doesn't mean it's a hybrid!
neither the Volt?Ampera or this car are hybrids, they're electric cars with a petrol engine as a back-up.
This Matt dude was coming from Auto Express and Carbuyer? what else?
470mpg???
