  • Dostoyevsky, in his book he did a study on "Why more people did not kill themselves?" According to him there is no God andamp; no judgement. Therefore, whats the point?

The beginning of wisdom is to realize one's own ignorance.

The early meaning of philosophy was the love of wisdom. But brother don't ponder the meaning of things if that is not your true nature.

It is strange the man who studies Dostoevsky knows nothing about Russian philisophers like Leontjev or Berdyaev. Cliford Goldstein says he doesn't know why God created us. He could find the answer in Nikolay Berdyaev' works. One of them is "On Creativity", where he expains why. Since God is Love, and Love is immanent feature of God, God coud not avoid creating human kind, because God needs an object for his love. By this he reveals his divine nature and realizes himself as God.

Wonderful lecture though Ivan's questions remain unanswered.

There are things beyond human knowledge, Dostoyevsky was an orthodox christian, and did believe in god , he just did not have faith in man.

this may have been said without much forethought. but with respect, burying your father as a man of late adulthood does not prove the world a pathetic mess.

I'm not convinced that we do actually choose who we love. Nor am I convinced love is a moral issue.
Love, to me, seems to be a preference; I prefer vanilla over chocolate, I prefer these folks over those folks. I can no more decide who to love than I can choose to enjoy boiled brussel sprouts.

maybe you ought to think more deeply about your concept of love. It seems to be more than preference.

This guy doesn't have a firm grasp on what the novels are trying to convey. Idk if it's because he's talking to a congregation but his explanations are very simplified to the point of disservice.

Love is a relationship of free subjects. That is exactly the point of the catholic church about the relationship of men and God. Luther denied the freedom of man in this relationship. And he was wrong. The reformators denied that a man is free to say yes or no to God. Instead they they claimed it's all up to God to decide whether men say yes or no. So there is no freedom on the side of men.

The choice to follow God or not, which side to take- is central in the Bible and Jesus teaching- just as you say. If a man can not repent, what would be the purpose to preach to him about a hope? While I am not of the Catholic church, I believe what you say here also! God has given each person the right to believe and choose a love relationship or not to.
