I do not have Clifford Goldstein's book but have copied an extract from chapter 18 entitled "An American Reformer" of the book "The Great Controversy" which is one of the chapters that explains how the year 1844 was arrived at as the expiration of the 2300-day prophecy. Page 326 "Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy Holy City. . . . Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for Himself. . . . And He shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week He shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease." The angel had been sent to Daniel for the express purpose of explaining to him the point which he had failed to understand in the vision of the eighth chapter, the statement relative to time--"unto two thousand and three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed." After bidding Daniel "understand the matter, and consider the vision," the very first words of the angel are: "Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy Holy City." The word here translated "determined" literally signifies "cut off." Seventy weeks, representing 490 years, are declared by the angel to be cut off, as specially pertaining to the Jews. But from what were they cut off? As the2300 days was the only period of time mentioned in chapter 8, it must be the period from which the seventy weeks were cut off; the seventy weeks must therefore be a part of the 2300 days, and the two periods must begin together. The seventy weeks were declared by the angel to date from the going forth of the commandment to restore and build Jerusalem. If the date of this commandment could be found, then the starting point for the great period of the 2300 days would be ascertained. In the seventh chapter of Ezra the decree is found. Verses 12-26. In its completest form it was issued by Artaxerxes, king of Persia, 457 B.C. But in Ezra 6:14 the house of the Lord at Jerusalem is said to have been built "according to the commandment ["decree," margin] of Cyrus, and Darius, and Artaxerxes king of Persia." These three kings, in originating, reaffirming, and completing the decree, brought it to the perfection required by the prophecy to mark the beginning of the 2300 years. Taking 457 B.C., the time when the decree was completed, as the date of the commandment, every specification of the prophecy concerning the seventy weeks was seen to have been fulfilled. "From the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks"--namely, sixty-nine weeks, or 483 years. THE DECREE OF ARTAXERXES WENT INTO EFFECT IN THE AUTUMN OF 457 B.C. FROM THIS DATE, 483 YEARS EXTEND TO THE AUTUMN OF A.D. 27. (See Appendix.) At that time this prophecy was fulfilled. The word "Messiah" signifies "the Anointed One." In the autumn of A.D. 27 Christ was baptized by John and received the anointing of the Spirit. And the Saviour Himself declared: "The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He hath anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor." Luke 4:18. After His baptism He went into Galilee, "preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, and saying, The time is fulfilled." Mark 1:14, 15. "And He shall confirm the covenant with many for one week." The "week" here brought to view is the last one of the seventy; it is the last seven years of the period allotted especially to the Jews. During this time, extending from A.D. 27 to A.D. 34, Christ, at first in person and afterward by His disciples, extended the gospel invitation especially to the Jews. As the apostles went forth with the good tidings of the kingdom, the Saviour's direction was: "Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not: but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel." Matthew 10:5, 6. "In the midst of the week He shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease." In A.D. 31, three and a half years after His baptism, our Lord was crucified. With the great sacrifice offered upon Calvary, ended that system of offerings which for four thousand years had pointed forward to the Lamb of God. Type had met antitype, and all the sacrifices and oblations of the ceremonial system were there to cease. The seventy weeks, or 490 years, especially allotted to the Jews, ended, as we have seen, in A.D. 34. At that time, through the action of the Jewish Sanhedrin, the nation sealed its rejection of the gospel by the martyrdom of Stephen and the persecution of the followers of Christ. Then the message of salvation, no longer restricted to the chosen people, was given to the world. The disciples, forced by persecution to flee from Jerusalem, "went everywhere preaching the word." "Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them." Peter, divinely guided, opened the gospel to the centurion of Caesarea, the God-fearing Cornelius; and the ardent Paul, won to the faith of Christ, was commissioned to carry the glad tidings "far hence unto the Gentiles." Acts 8:4, 5; 22:21. Thus far every specification of the prophecies is strikingly fulfilled, and the beginning of the seventy weeks is fixed beyond question at 457 B.C., and their expiration in A.D. 34. From this data there is no difficulty in finding the termination of the 2300 days. The seventy weeks--490 days--having been cut off from the 2300, there were 1810 days remaining. After the end of 490 days, the 1810 days were still to be fulfilled. From A.D. 34, 1810 years extend to 1844. Consequently the2300 days of Daniel 8:14 terminate in 1844. At the expiration of this great prophetic period, upon the testimony of the angel of God, "the sanctuary shall be cleansed." Thus the time of the cleansing of the sanctuary--which was almost universally believed to take place at the second advent-was definitely pointed out. Miller and his associates at first believed that the 2300 days would terminate in the spring of 1844, whereas the prophecy points to the autumn of that year. (See Appendix.) Daniel 8:14 (which is the basis of 1844) is a Scripture that the Adventists wrongly interpret. The horn that grows from one of the four hours is not Rome. As stated in 8:23 "in the latter time of their kingdom, a king of fierce countenance arises"--this is the little horn. This king comes from one of the four kingdoms that resulted from the splitting of Alexander the Great's empire--which is prophesized in verse 8. Therefore, this king is of Greek origin. According to this prophecy, this king will: 1. Stop the daily sacrifice. 2. Cast down or throw down or abandon the sanctuary. 3. Trample the sanctuary underfoot. In verse 13, one angel asks another, "How long will the vision be concerning the daily sacrifices..." (NKJV). The other angel responds that it will be 2,300 evenings and morning before the sanctuary is cleansed. Note that the Hebrew translated as "cleansed" could have been translated as made right, vindicated or properly restored--which is how the modern translation translate this word. Since the sanctuary was trampled underfoot by sinful man, the sanctuary was cast down, and the daily sacrifices were stopped, this has to be referring to the temple in Jerusalem. No where in the Bible does it state that there are daily animal sacrifices in heaven or that sinful man has trampled the heavenly sanctuary. This fierce king is one of the last kings in the Seleucid Empire--Antiochus Epiphanes IV. After Antiochus was driven out of Judah, the temple was restored as prophesized. To this day, this cleansing is celebrated every year. This is what Hanukkah is all about. Therefore, the 2,300 evening and days has nothing to do with the return of Jesus nor should it be used in combination Daniel chapter 9 to predict 1844.

William Millar, the Arabs of Yemen, Martin Luther, and many more expected Jesus to return in the 19th Century. The message started in England before William Millar became converted to Christianity. That is a variation of the narrative the lot of you trolls push. You do not want people to believe that the 2300-day prophecy started from the moment of Artaxerxes' decree in 457 BC, not one of you has yet to counter this reckoning with adequate scripture but a lot of opinions with a few sprinklings of scripture. YET the lot of you want everyone to believe the 2300 days WERE literal days that equated to 6 1/3 literal years which, magically, ends with the reign of Epiphanes (Seleculid dynasty) circa 171 BC to 165 BC!!!!. In other words, to deceive everyone into believing Epiphanes was the little horn that came out of the four horns. History shows it was the Ptolemaic dynasty of Egypt that was the strongest of the four Hellenistic dynasties and it was this dynasty that was conquered by Rome (Augustus formerly Octavian) circa 30 BC - 27 BC. Rome was a Republic before this conquest but became an empire under Augustus with this conquest and would go on to conquer much of the world. As it was with Augustus who maintained total control over the empire whilst giving the impression power was distributed, so it continues to this very day - the only difference is that the empire is no longer called "pagan" Rome but "Papal" Rome. Anyone who has some understanding of the matter can see the lot of you are sent on these SDA sites to seek to obliterate every prophecy that reveals who/what anti-Christ is, that it/he is returning to its/his full power underhandedly, and also that reveals the final destruction of its/his system by Jesus Himself.

But in any event, you have unwittingly proven William Millar's first year of 1843 and unwittingly confirmed the correctness of the method of calculating the prophetic timeline. Depending on how you do the calculation, you will have a year's difference - but that is almost insignificant when compared with the overall accuracy of the timing of historical events. We calculate birthdays 11+ months after our birthdate. As a matter of fact, when we claim to be a certain age on a new birth date, we are actually a day into the next year of our age. But, we calculate a day from the first second - a day is never calculated near the end of a 24-hour period. The year 1844 was arrived at because Millar and his associates had not taken into account that the decree in 457BC was issued in the autumn of that year. Likewise, two different birth years can be arrived at depending upon what year our age is subtracted from, unless our birthdate falls in January or in December.

Two facts destroy your argument Cliff. 1. The Pre-Advent judgement is dramatized as a metaphor in the form of a court judgement scene. It is not literal. The Pre-Advent Judgement takes place instantly in the mind of God since He knows all and His word cannot be contradicted. 2. The prophetic day for a year principle is not correct and you have not proven that it is. Yes, the vision of the beasts and the statue go all the way to the very end with Rome in various forms, but Daniel 8 verses 13 and 14 refer to the Temple at Jerusalem and its desecration being trampled by Antiochus Epiphanes and then restored by the Maccabees, all before Christ's birth on earth.

I do not have Clifford Goldstein's book but have copied an extract from chapter 18 entitled "An American Reformer" of the book "The Great Controversy" which is one of the chapters that explains how the year 1844 was arrived at as the expiration of the 2300-day prophecy.

The angel had been sent to Daniel for the express purpose of explaining to him the point which he had failed to understand in the vision of the eighth chapter, the statement relative to time--"unto two thousand and three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed." After bidding Daniel "understand the matter, and consider the vision," the very first words of the angel are: "Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy Holy City." The word here translated "determined" literally signifies "cut off." Seventy weeks, representing 490 years, are declared by the angel to be cut off, as specially pertaining to the Jews. But from what were they cut off? As the2300 days was the only period of time mentioned in chapter 8, it must be the period from which the seventy weeks were cut off; the seventy weeks must therefore be a part of the 2300 days, and the two periods must begin together. The seventy weeks were declared by the angel to date from the going forth of the commandment to restore and build Jerusalem. If the date of this commandment could be found, then the starting point for the great period of the 2300 days would be ascertained.
In the seventh chapter of Ezra the decree is found. Verses 12-26. In its completest form it was issued by Artaxerxes, king of Persia, 457 B.C. But in Ezra 6:14 the house of the Lord at Jerusalem is said to have been built "according to the commandment ["decree," margin] of Cyrus, and Darius, and Artaxerxes king of Persia." These three kings, in originating, reaffirming, and completing the decree, brought it to the perfection required by the prophecy to mark the beginning of the 2300 years. Taking 457 B.C., the time when the decree was completed, as the date of the commandment, every specification of the prophecy concerning the seventy weeks was seen to have been fulfilled.
"From the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks"--namely, sixty-nine weeks, or 483 years. THE DECREE OF ARTAXERXES WENT INTO EFFECT IN THE AUTUMN OF 457 B.C. FROM THIS DATE, 483 YEARS EXTEND TO THE AUTUMN OF A.D. 27. (See Appendix.) At that time this prophecy was fulfilled. The word "Messiah" signifies "the Anointed One." In the autumn of A.D. 27 Christ was baptized by John and received the anointing of the Spirit. The apostle Peter testifies that "God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power." Acts 10:38. And the Saviour Himself declared: "The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He hath anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor." Luke 4:18. After His baptism He went into Galilee, "preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, and saying, The time is fulfilled." Mark 1:14, 15.
"And He shall confirm the covenant with many for one week." The "week" here brought to view is the last one of the seventy; it is the last seven years of the period allotted especially to the Jews. During this time, extending from A.D. 27 to A.D. 34, Christ, at first in person and afterward by His disciples, extended the gospel invitation especially to the Jews. As the apostles went forth with the good tidings of the kingdom, the Saviour's direction was: "Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not: but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel." Matthew 10:5, 6.
"In the midst of the week He shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease." In A.D. 31, three and a half years after His baptism, our Lord was crucified. With the great sacrifice offered upon Calvary, ended that system of offerings which for four thousand years had pointed forward to the Lamb of God. Type had met antitype, and all the sacrifices and oblations of the ceremonial system were there to cease.
The seventy weeks, or 490 years, especially allotted to the Jews, ended, as we have seen, in A.D. 34. At that time, through the action of the Jewish Sanhedrin, the nation sealed its rejection of the gospel by the martyrdom of Stephen and the persecution of the followers of Christ. Then the message of salvation, no longer restricted to the chosen people, was given to the world. The disciples, forced by persecution to flee from Jerusalem, "went everywhere preaching the word." "Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them." Peter, divinely guided, opened the gospel to the centurion of Caesarea, the God-fearing Cornelius; and the ardent Paul, won to the faith of Christ, was commissioned to carry the glad tidings "far hence unto the Gentiles." Acts 8:4, 5; 22:21.
Thus far every specification of the prophecies is strikingly fulfilled, and the beginning of the seventy weeks is fixed beyond question at 457 B.C., and their expiration in A.D. 34. From this data there is no difficulty in finding the termination of the 2300 days. The seventy weeks--490 days--having been cut off from the 2300, there were 1810 days remaining. After the end of 490 days, the 1810 days were still to be fulfilled. From A.D. 34, 1810 years extend to 1844. Consequently the2300 days of Daniel 8:14 terminate in 1844. At the expiration of this great prophetic period, upon the testimony of the angel of God, "the sanctuary shall be cleansed." Thus the time of the cleansing of the sanctuary--which was almost universally believed to take place at the second advent-was definitely pointed out.
Miller and his associates at first believed that the 2300 days would terminate in the spring of 1844, whereas the prophecy points to the autumn of that year. (See Appendix.) The misapprehension of this point brought disappointment and perplexity to those who had fixed upon the earlier date as the time of the Lord's coming. But this did not in the least affect the strength of the argument showing that the 2300 days terminated in the year 1844, and that the great event represented by the cleansing of the sanctuary must then take place.”

(CLEARLY, THE 2300 DAYS ARE NOT LITERAL DAYS THAT TOTAL 6 1/3 YEARS. Therefore the prophecy of Daniel, which is parallel to that in Revelation, does not apply to Antiochus Epiphanes whose reign of terror against Jerusalem was from 171/170 BC to 165/164BC.

"The 2300 days had been found to begin when the commandment of Artaxerxes for the restoration and building of Jerusalem went into effect, in the autumn of 457 B.C. Taking this as the starting point, there was perfect harmony in the application of all the events foretold in the explanation of that period in Daniel 9:25-27.
Sixty-nine weeks, the first 483 of the 2300 years, were to reach to the Messiah, the Anointed One; and Christ's baptism and anointing by the Holy Spirit, A.D. 27, exactly fulfilled the specification. In the midst of the seventieth week, Messiah was to be cut off. Three and a half years after His baptism, Christ was crucified, in the spring of A.D. 31.

Daniel 8:14 (which is the basis of 1844) is a Scripture that the Adventists wrongly interpret. The horn that grows from one of the four hours is not Rome. As stated in 8:23 "in the latter time of their kingdom, a king of fierce countenance arises"--this is the little horn. This king comes from one of the four kingdoms that resulted from the splitting of Alexander the Great's empire--which is prophesized in verse 8. Therefore, this king is of Greek origin.
According to this prophecy, this king will:
1. Stop the daily sacrifice.
2. Cast down or throw down or abandon the sanctuary.
3. Trample the sanctuary underfoot.
In verse 13, one angel asks another, "How long will the vision be concerning the daily sacrifices..." (NKJV). The other angel responds that it will be 2,300 evenings and morning before the sanctuary is cleansed. Note that the Hebrew translated as "cleansed" could have been translated as made right, vindicated or properly restored--which is how the modern translation translate this word.
Since the sanctuary was trampled underfoot by sinful man, the sanctuary was cast down, and the daily sacrifices were stopped, this has to be referring to the temple in Jerusalem. No where in the Bible does it state that there are daily animal sacrifices in heaven or that sinful man has trampled the heavenly sanctuary.
This fierce king is one of the last kings in the Seleucid Empire--Antiochus Epiphanes IV. After Antiochus was driven out of Judah, the temple was restored as prophesized. To this day, this cleansing is celebrated every year. This is what Hanukkah is all about.
Therefore, the 2,300 evening and days has nothing to do with the return of Jesus nor should it be used in combination Daniel chapter 9 to predict 1844.

History shows it was the Ptolemaic dynasty of Egypt that was the strongest of the four Hellenistic dynasties and it was this dynasty that was conquered by Rome (Augustus formerly Octavian) circa 30 BC - 27 BC. Rome was a Republic before this conquest but became an empire under Augustus with this conquest and would go on to conquer much of the world. As it was with Augustus who maintained total control over the empire whilst giving the impression power was distributed, so it continues to this very day - the only difference is that the empire is no longer called "pagan" Rome but "Papal" Rome.
Anyone who has some understanding of the matter can see the lot of you are sent on these SDA sites to seek to obliterate every prophecy that reveals who/what anti-Christ is, that it/he is returning to its/his full power underhandedly, and also that reveals the final destruction of its/his system by Jesus Himself.

In this narrative Balak represents the pope. He is a king who offers sacrifices 22v40 . But in any event, you have unwittingly proven William Millar's first year of 1843 and unwittingly confirmed the correctness of the method of calculating the prophetic timeline. Depending on how you do the calculation, you will have a year's difference - but that is almost insignificant when compared with the overall accuracy of the timing of historical events.
We calculate birthdays 11+ months after our birthdate. As a matter of fact, when we claim to be a certain age on a new birth date, we are actually a day into the next year of our age. But, we calculate a day from the first second - a day is never calculated near the end of a 24-hour period. The year 1844 was arrived at because Millar and his associates had not taken into account that the decree in 457BC was issued in the autumn of that year. Likewise, two different birth years can be arrived at depending upon what year our age is subtracted from, unless our birthdate falls in January or in December.

1. The Pre-Advent judgement is dramatized as a metaphor in the form of a court judgement scene. It is not literal. The Pre-Advent Judgement takes place instantly in the mind of God since He knows all and His word cannot be contradicted.
2. The prophetic day for a year principle is not correct and you have not proven that it is.
Yes, the vision of the beasts and the statue go all the way to the very end with Rome in various forms, but Daniel 8 verses 13 and 14 refer to the Temple at Jerusalem and its desecration being trampled by Antiochus Epiphanes and then restored by the Maccabees, all before Christ's birth on earth.

I said that the Pre-Advent Judgement will happen before the coming of the Lord but that it is instant. It does not unfold like a court of law and does not take days or years to happen.
