    Canon need to change four things to stop loosing market share. 1) Open RF mount, even if it's in a controlled way, like only to some brands and only APSC lenses. 2) Clog 2 in all their cameras over $2000 usd, or R6, R5, R3 and R1 line 3) Start using full size HDMI 4) Histogram, waveforms, etc, while shooting. Now the histogram disappear when you press record button. That small firmware annoyances must to stop

    • @tuzuharurakutu
      @tuzuharurakutu 11 месяцев назад +3

      Doesn't make sense to only open RF mount to APSC. They don't have many apsc bodies to start, even if they did, they don't have enough market share.

      @@tuzuharurakutu they sell enough APSC bodies, R100, R50, R10, R7 and the ones that will come in 2024. There aren't enough APSC lenses in RF lineup now. Small cheap cameras need small cheap lenses. So Sigma, Tamron, Viltrox could sell RF-S lenses and Canon could concentrate its efforts in the full frame line of lenses. All the parts win. Canon would sell more cameras with third party lenses involved, Sigma, Viltrox, etc would sell their lenses and people who want cheap cameras and lenses would enter the Canon RF mount without big entry barriers.

    The lack of C-Log 2 is such a huge sore spot for me going forward. I have 3 R5s and so much invested in canon glass but I’m tempted to look in other directions. It’s actually insulting how they cripple their professional grade gear in order to prop up their cinema line. Everyone I know who even thinks about doing video is on Sony. The fact that a ZV-E1 can match an A7SIII and both can match with an FX6 and all of those can still hold a candle to a Venice is why Canon video is struggling to stay relevant. Hoping that 2024 Canon looks in the mirror and stops purposely cheating their loyal customers

      I’d expect the R1 to be what you’re thinking. As for Canon in general, when I’m out on high end events like the PGA it’s canon still being the dominant choice. Reliability and confidence in the equipment would be very difficult to pull me away from Canon. I love what I get from the R6, I can only imagine the results I’d get with the R3.

      @@chipxhazard I’d suggest you rent the cameras before you move on. Different sensors will look different regardless if they have the same gamma/log types. You’ll have a shift in colour and dynamic range always. The only way you can ever match two cameras is having identical cameras. I’ve been down this road myself and while you might get something close you’ll forever be chasing the small differences between the two sensors. The differences will be inconsistent as well, so you can’t just have one magic Lut to fix it.
      When it comes to video I have 3 identical Panasonic P2 broadcast cameras and they match always.
      When it comes to photography I’m still in love with my canon 5D iii and R6 and I’m content with that.
      Focus on the important things. Don’t get too wrapped up into the gear somebody else uses, they are most likely looking at you and wishing they had the gear you use too, we all do this. Love what you have and what you do and you’ll always make great content.

    • @chipxhazard
      @chipxhazard  10 месяцев назад

      @chardonwaite normally yes I would rent a camera before buying it but I was a previous Sony shooter and already familiar with slog3/scinetone. So moving systems wasn’t hard. When it comes to matching cameras, log types and gammas make a huge impact. More than a sensor does, because it tell the sensor how to interpret the colors & light it’s seeing. Trying to match clog3 and clog2 is like trying to match Canon & Sony colors. The curves and everything are so different it’s a nightmare. I enjoy color grading so I can match them pretty close, but it’s just a lot of extra work I don’t want to do. I only have like 3 tweaks to my Sonys and they match way better. I know a lut won’t magically match them lol. I don’t have gear envy if that’s what you’re referring to. I want my gear to work for me so I can focus on other things like composition and story telling. I don’t care what other people are using because they don’t shoot like I do. I’ve been doing this for 10 years now. I’m only new to RUclips not photography or videography 👍🏽

    Thanks for sharing your experience.Your IG Reel work is DOPE! Was that stuff shot on the R3? I personally like the log 3 space when corrected nice like your stuff... Do LUTS and grading make any difference? Can you actually get the C70 (Clog2) and R3 (Clog3) to match with extraordinary time invested?
    I'm new to moving images and own an R5 and an R3. Just bought a Shinobi to rig out the R3 and in hindsight I feel like I should have rigged out the R5 with a Ninja and kept the R3 for my sports still work only but the R3 battery life is hella attractive as you mentioned and I one-day envision shooting video and stills from same body on the fly.
    For the life of me havent yet taken the time to figure out how accomplish this task; but at the end of the day, as a hobbyist video dude, I do not yet know what I dont know and am still learning a great deal about dynamic range and color grading so R3 4K footage is serving me well aside from greedy space demand. Again thank you for sharing and please keep creating as your work is clean and inspirational in nature to me.

You definitely match Clog2 and Clog3 it’s just annoying and tedious lol. It’s one reason why it’s a big complaint. I would say to upgrade your R5 to the mark 2 if you plan on using one for photo & video at the same time as it’s one of the new features built into the camera. There’s a ton to learn about video but thankfully all the info is free here on RUclips. I can make a video on anything like grading and match the 2 logs in Final Cut. Let me know!

      @chipxhazard  8 месяцев назад

      When I bought the R3 I was already heavily invested in Canon which is why I saw it as a solution for me with the way I shoot. I know all of this after owning it for 2 years lol. Reading about gear and using gear are 2 very different things. Being already invested in the system instead of selling everything and buying into a new system isn’t always a wise choice. For me and the way I shoot and fits more Sony. That’s not to say everyone should leave Canon for Sony. But for me and how I use my gear, Canon doesn’t work for me as much as I enjoy certain parts of the system.

  • @mikede2464
    @mikede2464 3 месяца назад +1

    There is an easy explanation I can give for why the R3 is missing features seemingly at random. Canon has been doing that BS for years. Even going back to the 5D classic missing auto ISO. Seems like Canon's ways are starting to catch up with them. They have left themselves vulnerable to competition and are feeling it with Sony...that's for sure. If Canon keeps this up I fear they will fall like Nikon did in at the end of the 20th century.

  • @mikejackson9585
    @mikejackson9585 3 месяца назад +1

    Canon made it very clear that C-Log 2 wasn't an option in the previous cameras because they weren't optimized for the dynamic range needed to properly expose C-Log 2. It's possible they could have been, but that would mean the stills folks would be unhappy stealing their shadow DR to give to the video folks who would need a fair bit more highlight recovery. No way that flies on a sports camera. Now, with the R1 and R5 Mark II, they are optimized to make it work, after adding 1 to 1.5 more DR.

    • @chipxhazard
      @chipxhazard  3 месяца назад

      I’m not being mean when I say this but you need to do research and testing. Don’t just take what a company tells you they can or can’t do something. I say that because the R3 can shoot Raw at 6k 60p in clog2. The amount of data being pushed and move recording that format is a ton. The camera can easily do it without overheating for longer than 30mins. Shooting clog2 in a non raw format is less taxing on a camera. Them throwing it in 2 new cameras is proof it could’ve been there the whole time. It’s not a new format for them. It’s been around for a long time. Canon is notorious for crippling camera to not canibalize others in their line up. Sony is a great example of a company that doesn’t do this. Their flagship has slog3. Even a camera that can’t really utilize slog3 like the A7iii have it even though it requires 10bit to get a decent image out of it.

    • @mikejackson9585
      @mikejackson9585 3 месяца назад

      @chipxhazard , Maybe I didn't make it clear. Sorry if I led you to believe it was about bandwidth, processing power, or overheating. The problem is purely with the dynamic range of the sensor. I believe Canon lists it at or just under 15 stops for the R5. I have to guess they set their goal for C-Log 2 at 16 stops and greater because now, C-Log 2 is possible on the new sensors. Additionally, they did mention the R5 and R3 didn't have enough dynamic range for it. That's because you need to overexpose your footage by a stop or so to effectively use C-Log 2, that makes total sense to me. They also suggest the same for C-Log 3, but Canon also says C-Log 3 doesn't need as much overexposure as C-Log 2. So long story short... Canon could have stuffed it in, but you can't get the benefit from it without more highlight dynamic range. And the only way to do that is to retune the sensor's characristics, making non-video shooters unhappy.

    • @chipxhazard
      @chipxhazard  3 месяца назад

      @mikejackson9585 I understand what you are saying, but then you wouldn’t be able to get it using raw then either. I have shot the R3 and R5 both in clog3 then Raw converted to clog2. There is a difference in dynamic range. They can do it if they want to. Instead they throw a bunch of non sense saying it’s not possible yet there are other companies that do it with their cameras with less dynamic range. I’ll make a video explaining it with examples. It’ll just take me a minute.

    • @mikejackson9585
      @mikejackson9585 3 месяца назад

      @chipxhazard , I'm not saying there's no difference, just that I bet Canon doesn't see a use in adding C-Log 2 if it will simply look like C-Log 3 footage stretched in a C-Log 2 profile. When they say the sensor can't support the range, I tend to believe them. Again, that doesn't mean there is no difference, but I'm sure it doesn't meet their requirements.

They think oh no we cannot give the R3 Clo2 or the famous WideDR Lut from the C500 Mark II or C300 Mark III, because we need to protect the bigger cameras. I mean a R3 is something entirely different than a C300 Mark III with size, input/outputs, weight difference...the cinema line is great, but it would also be great to have a R3 and R5 that can cut with them too, I don't think they would loose sales on the bigger cameras. Because a C500 Mark II is something for a little bigger productions than solo shooters on weddings. Sony has a much more serious cinema department but they do not make compromises, I don't understand what makes canon think that they don't have to put these functions to the r-system. I mean it must happen once in a while. I didnt catch yours on there but it has to happen once in a while. Right? You must have caught an amazing deal, for selling used. Either it went to someone you knew or it went online and disssppeared in about a dsy. I saw a batch of refurbs once that blew out in 5 days which is amazingly long. So you definitely got a deal.
    Canon owns about 48% of total camera market share, but when it comes to cameras with interchangable lenses, Canon and Sony are pretty neck and neck. I read recently that Canon pulled ahead again but they are close. When it comes to people dumping their cameras on the used market, however, their is no comparison. At the time of this writing Adorama has 40 individual mirrorless Canons for sale. They're trying to sell 182 mirrorless Sonys. Of these, there are 21 Canon R5's or R6's while there are over 100 Sony A7's that somebody dumped on the used market. So, yeah, for selling a used camera you (or the reseller at least) probably did very well. The demand for the R3 is quite high. But yeah, if youre a video guy and dont shoot action photography, what would you need this for? I mean why would you invest the time to learn how to operate this beast? You could get a video camera or an R5 c. Why would you train your eye and your brain for eye control, when regular AF, or even back-button focus is enough?

      So first I am hybrid shooter and shoot photo and video on wedding days as well as shooting events. I had the R5 when it came out and would overheat constantly. I prefer to use All-I video, so that eliminates the R6. Also was over having record limits of 30mins. My options at the time were to switch to Sony or get an R3. The R5C wasn’t out yet, and is also very slow when switch from photo to video and back. The R3 switches instantly, doesn’t overheat, has great battery life, and way better autofocus. Also just because a camera has a feature doesn’t mean you have to use it. The eye control autofocus is cool but not as useful as most people think. Lastly it doesn’t take anytime to learn the R3. It’s a simple camera that’s very straight forward. The Sony cameras are more complicated lol

      @@chipxhazard Hey thanks for the reply.
      I use the R3 mostly for sports shooting in fast moving sports. I did some portrait-type work recently and it was a dream to work with but that’s not something I do a lot with.
      If the R3 strikes you as simple you are definitely a better man than I. After almost a month of shooting, reading and testing I still don’t feel like I’m using the R3 “correctly” yet. I do see people slapping a back-button focus on it but those customizations often seem like they cover-up the original design intent and I’m not willing to do that yet. I came from a 5D-MkIV so that may be part of the problem. I needed the exceptional ISO and the quicker, perhaps best AF and with this one they finally solved the quick e-burst with no rolling shutter problem. So the R3 sounded like the right vehicle for going mirrorless when you get to a point where you really need to up your AF game. Went all-in with the R3 to get the added processing power and connectivity as well. And supposedly it was a stills camera that maybe, finally had the video thing figured out on a professional level.
      In many ways the AF-On button is a built in BBF. Gordon Laing suggests that the original design is see-the-area(EYE), lock-the-object (AF-on), and shoot it (shutter button). It’s easy to customize yourself out of that natural progression, however. I’m playing with an option where you can thumb-place your box/point over the likely action point; eye-track your second action point and see which pops first. Not sure it’s workable in real-life because if the first pops you have to relook there. And maybe that's too complicated to ever train for. There are a LOT of options underneath that AF-ON button so there may be a smoother way. Not yet sure.
      I hear a lot of references to the eye-track as a gimmick, but I’m not willing to concede that yet. You definitely have to read the instructions and train yourself to keep your eye in the center. So that’s kind of a pain. Eye-guided AF is definitely a different mindset though. Where back-button focus is kind of like sighting in the scope on a rifle, Eye-guided is like playing frisbee with a well-trained dog. You throw it out towards the target and then trust the dog to catch it. I’m not comfortable with letting go that much yet. I can’t think fast enough, however, to catch “that” point to that level of focus, that fast… so that may mean I just have to let go a bit. Which means sometimes it may be a different point whereas before it might have been a totally missed point. And I don’t think I’ve really got it yet: How it’s supposed to work or could work at its full potential. We’ll see.
      Thanks for talking about the video performance. I’m starting from the bottom in that area. Apparently clog-2 is a big deal. I do like the slow-mo when I’ve managed to cue up the exposure etc. ahead of time. Video is a whole big field and I just have a hint of what a LUT is and the fact that we color-grade a dim version when we’re serious. There’s a lot to know and it’s changing all the time.
      My apologies on the edgy tone in my first response. Thanks for making the video.

      @_SYDNA_ No worries! Yeah it takes some learning curves from dslrs to mirrorless cameras but once you mess around with them long enough. They start to not be so complicated. The eye tracking comes across as a gimmick to a lot of people because it’s a feature no one asked for haha. It is actually very functional just not as useful to me, but that’s not to say it can’t be amazing for someone else. Like I said if your main focus is photography it’s pretty much flawless. It’s in the video department where I had a few issues that I got tired of having to work around. The more video work you do, the more you’ll start to notice it. Thanks for watching! I appreciate your time!🙏🏽

    Seems like the author of this video and many of the commentators have a real gripe with Canon and the R3. I don't have an R3, but it seems if you're going to shell out thousands for a high end system, before you purchase anything you would list every feature you want, prioritize those features and compare shop before you buy. I'm not into video and shoot stills almost exclusively so my feature set and priorities are going to different and if there are things I don't like about the camera I use, it's not the manufacturer's fault, it is the purchasing choice I made.

    • @chipxhazard
      @chipxhazard  10 месяцев назад

      Every manufacturer and camera is going to have something that doesn’t work for you. Most times you won’t know what it is until you use it. The complaints I have about the camera were things I thought I could look past/work around. But when compared to other systems in the same price range. You begin to realize that the manufacturer(canon in this case) is just being ridiculous in not giving the camera something software related. This was not a purchasing oversight as I was already heavily invested (over 40k) in Canon. The R3 was the only camera they offered that fit the way I shoot. I am aware not everyone shoots like I do, but the points I made are very valid. I’m a photographer & videographer full time. So when I invent I do expect a company to give me simple things like a log profile. Hence the switch to Sony. And so far it is ticking every box. It’s just very costly to swap systems.

    Ergonomically Canon is the worst, for long shoots you will regret if you don't have a strap or something to hold it. Just was at a fashion show recently and one Canon guy who was beside me promised to get a Sony cause his setup which was even less can mine weight more than twice that of my sony a7r iv and a 70-200 g-master, and he is not only the one I know of 😅

    • @chipxhazard
      @chipxhazard  11 месяцев назад +2

      The R3 is surprisingly light and I would use it with a rf 24-70 for 10 hour wedding days easy because the ergonomics on it are very good. It’s a very comfortable camera to hold for long periods of time. The R5 is pretty good as well just overheats to fast

    • @chipxhazard
      @chipxhazard  6 месяцев назад

      I didn’t lol. Decoding into clog2 and recording in clog2 are 2 different things. The raw can decode into clog2 ish profile. Tho it matches the curves mostly, the colors are slightly off when compared to the c70s clog2. I know that could be due to the sensors being different, but I believe that’s why Canon never says it’s clog2. Also I never said it didn’t work great lol it’s raw and not everyone wants to shoot raw just to get more dynamic range. It’s a much bigger file that’s not the most user friendly.

    • @mikaelsilkeberg9734
      @mikaelsilkeberg9734 6 месяцев назад

      You can not compare a DGO sensor with a non DGO sensor, that is what is so special about C70. You have to compare with very high end camera like ARRI and RED. That is a different price range... R5c and R3 are great cameras but can not measure the dynamic range you have with C70. You can match all 3 cameras with good result even with Sony cameras....

      I don’t care what anyone has to say when it comes to making excuses for a company that makes millions and can’t give their users a simple profile. I’m not closed minded. Other companies do it even if it’s not beneficial to the user. Example - Sony A7iii has slog3 even though it’s only 8bit and can’t really use the profile. It’s still there regardless. Also I’m not that serious lol
