An Amazing Camera....But It's Not For Me😢 Blackmagic OG
The Blackmagic Original is an insanely good camera, but it just doesn't fit the way I shoot video sadly. On the plus side of things. It could be a fantastic camera for you!
Currently I Still have the camera listed. Let me know if you are interested!

Lol bro your vid appeared in my feed and played automatically and I recognized that city skyline. I live here too. City looks great on that camera
lol thank you! Yeah Jacksonville is a huge city haha
Hello, great video. I think you may have mixed up the max Iso at 7:28. The max Iso you should use is 1250, not 12,050 like you said. Thanks for otherwise a great video.
Yes you are correct haha thank you!
Beautiful. I owned that camera for years when it came out… It made me 10x its original price. ❤
Yeah it’s definitely held its value!
I feel the title
Where is the camera listed?

I think you're too hard on yourself, I saw a lot of really nice photos. I own the X2D so I can't compare. Thanks for the video! 👊
Thank you for the kind words!! 🙏🏽
2:04 .. Thats what she said
lol didn’t know if anyone would catch it 😂
I Still have this camera on my shelf and I still love it - it has an iconic look in the footage that the modern pockets can't recreate. So yeah, you definitely have a more harder time working with it - but for its time - this camera is still filmic AF!
Yeah it’s got a very unique look to the image. But still debating if it’s worth it for me lol
I clicked on this just because I was surprised that someone wants to deal with this crappy little thing😂 It is from the days of video on 5dMk2 with Magic Lantern. It was great for those days. Since then the tech advanced so much, it really doesn't make sense to look back. If you want decent use of it, you need external power, external recording, stabilizer etc... all the stuff to get it to the point you can get built in the modern bodies. But if you want to embrace the nostalgia, shoot wide angle, dynamic moving scenes.
lol I wouldn’t call it crappy. Most modern cameras can’t record RAW internally. You don’t need external recording. External power is also pretty common for people who don’t want to lug around 4-5 batteries. I vmount or in this case npf battery runs for a whole day. The nostalgia I’m goin for is super 8 home movie vibe. Not Hollywood. Very different things
cool music, the video shots look really nice. What camera are you using for the video and what kind of post process? What beach is that?
Thank you! I used the DJI osmo pocket 3. I can make a video on the post process. It’s Jacksonville beach, Florida
There is a huge difference between 4K - 6K - 8K. Your not going to see it on youtube. RUclips only allows for 8K uploads up to 4320P. This video is posted in 4K 2160P. You did not upload in full 8K quality. If you had this in an 8K timeline your 4K clips would have black borders on them. Also to truely appreciate the image and see a difference you need a color calibrated display that allows for 8K viewing. 100inches or bigger! Most people even video pros only have 5K monitors at best. Panavision makes DXL2 Projector that can display true 8K like what you would shoot on RED Monstero full frame sensor. Very few theaters have these projectors. Most movie theaters display 4K or Digital IMAX which is only 2K. I see what you mean about people not "seeing" a difference but there is more data there even if most people can not perceive it.
I know there’s a huge difference. RUclips also wouldn’t let me upload it in 8k 🤷🏽♂️. The main difference is for editors cropping and reframing in post, cgi editors, animators and stuff like that. That’s really where 8k makes the most difference. In the video I was mainly speaking to the perceivable difference.
I can see the difference on my phone but will check tomorrow on my monitor. I also do a lot of cropping and reframing in my edits. High res footage has many pros for me. Stabilizing in post means cropping in. With 4k in 4k timeline, you would end up with softer image. Higher res also benefit for tracking and cgi puposes. 8k would make for some nice stills as wel. Noise/grain and other artefacts are less visible when scaling down to 4k. Content aware-fill and other AI features work better with high res footage. Other studios and freelancers prefer 8k over 4k if available.
Some solid points!
For most people 8K is overkill. You’re really only gonna notice a difference if you’re watching it on a giant movie theater screen or at the Sphere in Vegas. If most of your content is just gonna be shown on a TV, computer screen or phone, it’s more important to increase dynamic range than resolution. And resolution isn’t necessarily going to make anything sharper after you’ve already made the move to 4K. The elements that’ll make the image sharper are the lenses, lighting and how you set the aperture.
The jump from 1080p to 4K felt huge when I first got a 4K camera. The Jump from 4K to 6K/8K just doesn't feel nearly as big. It is nice to be able to reframe some shots on a 4K timeline, but overall 4K is plenty of resolution.
1000% agreed!
I shot with the Sony A7RV recently for a photo project but I ended up shooting video for the same project as well and I noticed the difference as soon as I put the footage in Davinci.
I feel like I noticed the difference more in photo than video. Probably need my eyes checked again tho lol
lol you doled for clog2 bro you can still make amazing videos. You most relay on tech to get the job done
Awesome job with the viewfinder POV and incorporating your final shots into the video! The shutter and film advance sounds are ASMR-worthy, and it felt like I was there on the photowalk with you. I actually recently ordered an R-D1 and am eagerly awaiting its arrival, so this helped to satiate some of the anticipation!
Thank you so much!! It’s my favorite camera for everyday stuff!
Yeah agree, with @TCMx3 below - we run two X2D's with a HAss 907xCFV100c, but we also have a bunch of Leica - SL3, Q3 and a suite of fast 'M' primes - we are Pro's 35 years in the game based in the UK mostly covering Cotswold Weddings where the warmth of those chocolate box esque environments need to be captured correctly. Leica for Black and White Hass for its HNCS - top fun fact - when Hass bought Imacon what they really got was all the colours - thats what HNCS is all about - Fuji with their multitude of Film sims can't even get close - and what's the point if you shot it in RAW anyway and if you haven't whats the point of Fuji GFX MF? Mute extra point we use Profoto A10 flash as Hass uses Nikon Protocols and it all integrates seamlessly especially now with the addition of the proper trigger mount included when you buy a 907x100c which was not available on the 907x50c - you can get a trigger on using the optic attachment and make it work via a lead into the headphone socket but you were stuck with it - the trigger won't come off again - I know, I tried and that would only work on Elinchrom and Broncolor as Profoto do not make a modern trigger with a small sync port!!!!
Hi thanks for the great video. I really like the look of the pictures. I also have an M9. The editing is fantastic, can you do a video about the editing in Lightroom or send me the editing presets? Very nice colors. I know that most if it comes from the M9 itself, but again, I also have an Leica M9. By the way, I am successfully using a 128 GB sandisk SD card. Just format it in a computer with fat32. I also successfully filled it up. The 32 GB storage limit is a myth. With best regards R.
Thank you!! I can definitely do a video of how I edit them🙏🏽
the X2D with the newest V series lenses I would describe as "just fast enough to not be annoying". I agree that Sony (or Leica SL, which is probably the highest IQ you can squeeze out of full frame right now) have stunning output but ultimately Hasselblad's color science is so good that with their lenses I find it basically impossible to improve on the color/white balance that comes straight out of the camera. the adapting crowd are indeed using Fuji cameras, which have their own drawbacks, but if you want the big sensor and a focal plane shutter that's your choice I guess.
Yeah I just don’t have the budget for an X2D with a V series lens.
@@chipxhazard The X1DII is already a good bit faster and it also doesn't have to be the latest glass. The 45p and 28p as well as the older 90mm are great lenses and a lot cheaper. The electronic shutter is still effectively unusable though, even on the X2D.
Lovely shots, i gotta say Kara wins for me 70/30 - your closeup, macros looked beautiful though. The framing and balance of highlights/shadows, sometimes little overexposed of Karas but thats the style i like :)
Yeah she has great shots🤘🏽
My perspective, for video I would get the Red and for photos the Leica all your problems are fixed. Thank you for sharing
Meh… too cheap for me lol
I also own a m9. It’s a lovely camera and a wonderful experience for shooting. Even with its many shortcomings The colour and b&w are fantastic better I feel than my newer SL
Yeah it is! The b&w are fantastic straight out of camera
Now they put clog2 canon r5 ii :) its realy intresting. Enjoy with your Sony
Yeah I really wanna test it!
I have 2 of these cameras, and yes I would like Clog2 and open gate for my anamorphic lenses. But still, the image is amazing!!!! Even the 1080p is over sampled, not all sony's offer this. Even with Clog3 you can achieve beautiful images in video.
Agreed! I just love the colors and highlight roll off out of Clog2. It’s so natural and really flexible gamma curve.
If I have never experienced CCD when I transitioned from film, CMOS would've been fine but I miss CCD. Great comparison nevertheless!
Thank you! It still has its place. I still miss my Epson RD1 that’s CCD.
I think that you are a very closed minded person, when you say in many of your sentences “I don’t what anyone has to say”….I am not trolling you, just being real….
I don’t care what anyone has to say when it comes to making excuses for a company that makes millions and can’t give their users a simple profile. I’m not closed minded. Other companies do it even if it’s not beneficial to the user. Example - Sony A7iii has slog3 even though it’s only 8bit and can’t really use the profile. It’s still there regardless. Also I’m not that serious lol
@@chipxhazardI can see that …lol
Why not testing the cameras on humans/human faces, which would be 75% of one's photos? ;-)
Didn’t have a person with me to take photos of lol. It was a last minute experiment 🤷🏽♂️
@@chipxhazard all good, I know how it is ;-)
I have asked myself this question many times and I have owned, probably all the popular CCD cameras ever made, including "colour beasts" like Sony Alpha 900, which uses CMOS. What I discovered was this, the colours are slightly different in very specific conditions and I am talking only about RAW, the JPEG's are irrelevant to me because colours can be adjusted in post to villy nilly, so the most obvious thing is the colours in daylight landscape photography, with older cameras, you seem to be able to push the colours FAR more in terms of saturation and contrast, then you would with a modern camera, some people attribute this to CFA the colour filter array, and it might be true, I have tried so many times to test this theory but there just no way for me unless I do spectral readings and other scientific measures which I am not gonna waste my time on, sorry its a 20 000 dollar investment into the equipment thats taking this too far. The other thing I did notice is that, older cameras, tend to just have more contrast overall, because their dynamic range is also just worse overall, modern cameras have like 11 to 12 stops of dynamic range, even the micro 4/3 sensors are 11 stops now which is kinda crazy, micro 4/3 sensors perform as good as APS-C now at base ISO. RAW files straight out of old cameras will look more saturated, more punchy as a result, while modern cameras tend to give you a flatter look just to preserve as much info as possible. But if you push RAW files from older cameras in colour saturation and contrast, you will see that old cameras can be pushed a lot further, but it also just looks silly, you can push the colours in modern cameras pretty far before they start clipping, no one in their right mind does 200% saturation on an image anyway so its a moot point. I know some people on DPReview forums also claim the CFA on older cameras can see different colours modern cameras cannot see? I tested this and found no such thing, they see the same colours, if anything, only Foveon can do this because of its unique sensor design and how it works and its only under extremely specific lighting conditions and during autumn when you get a lot of red - brown colours, again you have to pixel peep to see it. So no, there no "big" difference, there is a difference, but to see it, you gotta work those RAW files real hard to point of silliness, and lots of pixel peeping and doing comparison shots etc, its just silly overall, and quite frankly I believe genuinely this is all spawned from DPReview Forums by gear snobs who want to justify their GAS. Modern cameras are so good if you have skills to work those RAW files they can look like anything, and DxO film sim actually do really great job turning a modern image into film be it slide or negative, far better than any old camera can do, old cameras just look early 2000s digital, that has a charm of its own hence why I still own my GH1 which I love but its hardly anything to do with any special magic, and more to do with the dated technology inside.
Well said. The difference is so insignificant that I can’t justify keeping something like that. They are super fun to use because of quirks but other than that nothing else. I think people feel the need to reach to justify their purchase, but to that I say buy whatever makes you happy. If you prefer how you shoot with an older camera. Then by all means use that. A lot of my friends that are in the wedding field still use the 5Diii and 5Div. They’re still great and if you don’t wanna upgrade then don’t lol.
I have a Konica Minolta Maxxum 7D. It's a 6.1 megapixel CCD sensor with a 1.5 crop. My regular camera is the Fujifilm X-H2 which is 40 megapixels. I love that camera, but I absolutely adore the KM 7D. I don't shoot fast on my modern camera. I pose my subject and have them hold their poses for a few seconds anyway, so shooting the older camera is a joy. For the KM 7D the color science is beautiful. That is what draws me to that camera.
Yeah user experience is what I’ve found to be what draws me to certain cameras now. Like I miss my Epson RD1. It’s a CCD sensor with a 1.5x crop as well. But it’s a joy to use and super fun.
Thanks for the comparison. It is like 5D classic vs another cam vs another - probably those "magic" revelations comes from shooting Jpegs and comparing them, instead of checking if there is anything special in RAW.
Welcome! Yeah if you’re a jpeg shooter then I could see the argument but other than that 🤷🏽♂️
Well to be honest it somewhat makes more sense to compare jpgs unless you're using linear profiles - lightroom is notorious for having terrible profiles for most cameras, so the image you get when importing a raw in it is pretty far from what the camera's color science actually is in most cases, and might even give you a wrong idea about the dynamic range it has (ever looked at Fujifilm RAWs in LR compared to how the profiles look on the JPGs, and then in Capture One ? Yeah..). The idea in the video is interesting but you'd have to control parameters much more than that imo.
@nimixlol I didn’t do jpegs because the Leica M9’s white balance is always on the cooler side and I wanted to eliminate any variables to see what differences remain. I even made sure the color profiles were the same so they were being processed the same. That’s why I said if you’re a jpeg shooter you’ll notice more of a difference. 🙏🏽
@@chipxhazard Yeah but that's the thing, you're comparing Adobe's interpretation of those files in a profile which is designed to make them look alike - as far as I'm aware, Adobe Color is made to give a similar editing starting point for every file format (which is sometimes questionable, but that's not the point), so it makes sense that the colors are pretty similar once the WB is fixed. I think using a fixed daylight white balance in camera and comparing JPGs to actually see what the brand intended the color science to be, as well as RAWs in a linear profile (or camera matching if they're decent) to check for DR would give a better representation of the sensor performance and color rendition. I realized I must sound like quite the entitled internet person by the way, but I really don't mean to lol, it's really nice of you to have gone through such lengths to make an interesting comparison and I'm just really curious as to how the CCD sensor actually renders light, since I've heard that it does render highlights with a nicer rolloff than most CMOS ones.
@nimixlol lol you don’t sound entitled. Those are good points. I might make a part 2 comparing those. I just used what I think majority of people are going to use. That’s why I picked Lightroom, adobe color and matched the white balance. I always edit my photos so that why I said there wasn’t a big enough difference. But I might give that shot!
There is an easy explanation I can give for why the R3 is missing features seemingly at random. Canon has been doing that BS for years. Even going back to the 5D classic missing auto ISO. Seems like Canon's ways are starting to catch up with them. They have left themselves vulnerable to competition and are feeling it with Sony...that's for sure. If Canon keeps this up I fear they will fall like Nikon did in at the end of the 20th century.
Your complaints about the HDMI port and clog 2 are related to Canon not wanting to cut into profits on their video cameras.
I’m aware. They have eventually folded cause they are in the new R1 and R5ii. Idk why it took so long tho.
Such a dream old camera
Picked up my M9 2 months ago. Fuji fanboy needed to try the CCD. Slows me down a ton but I’ve really enjoyed the experience and output when I can nail focus or at least get close. The colors are 🔥. Your photo set on this video is amazing! I only have the Voigt 40mm SC. Tons of flaws but character is cool.
Thank you so much! Yeah I have the Voigt 40mm MC. Its character is awesome but freakin hard to nail focus at 1.4 lol. CCD full frame is a beautiful thing.
M9 CCD sensor always catches my eye, has some spirit in it!
It’s got some special stuff goin on for sure!
Canon made it very clear that C-Log 2 wasn't an option in the previous cameras because they weren't optimized for the dynamic range needed to properly expose C-Log 2. It's possible they could have been, but that would mean the stills folks would be unhappy stealing their shadow DR to give to the video folks who would need a fair bit more highlight recovery. No way that flies on a sports camera. Now, with the R1 and R5 Mark II, they are optimized to make it work, after adding 1 to 1.5 more DR.
I’m not being mean when I say this but you need to do research and testing. Don’t just take what a company tells you they can or can’t do something. I say that because the R3 can shoot Raw at 6k 60p in clog2. The amount of data being pushed and move recording that format is a ton. The camera can easily do it without overheating for longer than 30mins. Shooting clog2 in a non raw format is less taxing on a camera. Them throwing it in 2 new cameras is proof it could’ve been there the whole time. It’s not a new format for them. It’s been around for a long time. Canon is notorious for crippling camera to not canibalize others in their line up. Sony is a great example of a company that doesn’t do this. Their flagship has slog3. Even a camera that can’t really utilize slog3 like the A7iii have it even though it requires 10bit to get a decent image out of it.
@chipxhazard , Maybe I didn't make it clear. Sorry if I led you to believe it was about bandwidth, processing power, or overheating. The problem is purely with the dynamic range of the sensor. I believe Canon lists it at or just under 15 stops for the R5. I have to guess they set their goal for C-Log 2 at 16 stops and greater because now, C-Log 2 is possible on the new sensors. Additionally, they did mention the R5 and R3 didn't have enough dynamic range for it. That's because you need to overexpose your footage by a stop or so to effectively use C-Log 2, that makes total sense to me. They also suggest the same for C-Log 3, but Canon also says C-Log 3 doesn't need as much overexposure as C-Log 2. So long story short... Canon could have stuffed it in, but you can't get the benefit from it without more highlight dynamic range. And the only way to do that is to retune the sensor's characristics, making non-video shooters unhappy.
@mikejackson9585 I understand what you are saying, but then you wouldn’t be able to get it using raw then either. I have shot the R3 and R5 both in clog3 then Raw converted to clog2. There is a difference in dynamic range. They can do it if they want to. Instead they throw a bunch of non sense saying it’s not possible yet there are other companies that do it with their cameras with less dynamic range. I’ll make a video explaining it with examples. It’ll just take me a minute.
@chipxhazard , I'm not saying there's no difference, just that I bet Canon doesn't see a use in adding C-Log 2 if it will simply look like C-Log 3 footage stretched in a C-Log 2 profile. When they say the sensor can't support the range, I tend to believe them. Again, that doesn't mean there is no difference, but I'm sure it doesn't meet their requirements.
This should have been a 2 minute video.
I don’t see you makin one.
You didn't look to see if I did.. Now did you???
Don’t care cause you’re being a jerk for no reason. Go troll somewhere else.
Are you planning to get the R5 II? Think it makes R3 almost obsolete
Idk about obsolete but it’s definite a great camera. I’ve already swapped systems but I still might try it out.
You can buy R1 now
lol already swapped systems🤷🏽♂️
fireeee bro, im all for convenience too bro (also have the zve1) !
Thanks! Convenience is under rated haha. Nice! It’s such a good camera for the price.
Thanks for sharing your experience.Your IG Reel work is DOPE! Was that stuff shot on the R3? I personally like the log 3 space when corrected nice like your stuff... Do LUTS and grading make any difference? Can you actually get the C70 (Clog2) and R3 (Clog3) to match with extraordinary time invested? I'm new to moving images and own an R5 and an R3. Just bought a Shinobi to rig out the R3 and in hindsight I feel like I should have rigged out the R5 with a Ninja and kept the R3 for my sports still work only but the R3 battery life is hella attractive as you mentioned and I one-day envision shooting video and stills from same body on the fly. For the life of me havent yet taken the time to figure out how accomplish this task; but at the end of the day, as a hobbyist video dude, I do not yet know what I dont know and am still learning a great deal about dynamic range and color grading so R3 4K footage is serving me well aside from greedy space demand. Again thank you for sharing and please keep creating as your work is clean and inspirational in nature to me. Peace from Cali
Thank you so much for the kind words! I really appreciate it! Luts can make a difference, but grading is where most of the work is done in my opinion. You definitely match Clog2 and Clog3 it’s just annoying and tedious lol. It’s one reason why it’s a big complaint. I would say to upgrade your R5 to the mark 2 if you plan on using one for photo & video at the same time as it’s one of the new features built into the camera. There’s a ton to learn about video but thankfully all the info is free here on RUclips. I can make a video on anything like grading and match the 2 logs in Final Cut. Let me know!
You made WISE DECISION, get away from CANON they the YUCKIEST OF ALL. The LIWEST QUALITY IN CAMERA ENGINEERING!!! They LIED TO YOU!!!!
Ok they aren’t that bad lol
That all want Super camera that only cost 50 bucks. NOT EVEN WHEN JESUS COME TWICE IT WILL HAPPEN!!! Dealer up!!!!
It’s good for you R3 is not good anyway;A1 A9 no iiibis better
Thanks for the informative and interesting video. what kind of lens adapter do you use for the vintage lens you have in the video?
Welcome! It was just a cheap adaptor from Amazon haha
I've been sitting on my RD1s forever. Thank you for this inspirational video. There's just something about the way this camera feels in your hands when you shoot with it.
Welcome! It’s literately one my favorite cameras I’ve ever owned. There really isn’t anything like it. 🙏🏽
Bro What?! Thats so wild
Yeah foreal lol probably won’t shoot near the hood again
Dude, your shots are amazing on this video. How do you not have anymore subs?
Thank you so much!! Idk lol
Good for you!!!
