How Much Power Does My Stock BMW M240i Really Make? [Not What I Was Expecting]

- It seems to be a theme with BMW, that they are known for underquoting their performance figures on many models. Since having my 2018 LCI BMW M240i, I have therefore wondered if this applies to my car.
I've come to Litchfield Motors, to use their Dyno and find out how much power my stock BMW M240i is really making!

Shot blurred out at around @1:53 is deliberate due to being something I can’t show! Thanks all for watching
@Rubedo Alaberti haha that’s a different car 😎
Hi Joel, love ur vids by the way, i know uve long sold and moved on from this whip but do you by any chance remember what suspension setup u had on this paired with the bola b11 19s? Just got them rims, I'm bit hesitant to go for lowering springs just yet tho but urs looks the perfect height so I was just wondering
Enjoy the ride home Joel you selected one of the best shops around for your mods, great choice....
This is giving me new car fever... those springs look great!
Thanks dude
Love the car Joel, keep up the great work!
Thanks buddy!
Nice one mate.Seems like your exhaust was a pretty good investment.I wonder whats next,a remap maybe??? Keep up the good work Joel.Cheers again for some entertainment.
Thanks David, remap is coming!
Nice video dude, bet it’s hard to put these numbers into a feeling over camera but bet that thing is naffing fast!
Wait until the remap video 😅
Does the quicksilver exhaust include a Downpipe with a sportscat ?!
...otherwise I don’t think just a Blackbox will generate 16bhp plus
BTW you got me to buy the z4 now I think you got me thinking about the 240i ;P
Great video mate. Dreading the next 😂😉
Soon come 😜
Nice one Joel. You should see and feel a huge difference once the stage 1 tune has been applied. Wild guess I'm thinking 355 to 400😉
Or maybe even 420😎
A lot of manufacturers pad their numbers; it helps keep insurance rates down some and therefore allows people who couldn’t otherwise afford to own the car to purchase and maintain one.
The German brands are the only ones who consistently sandbag their horsepower and torque outputs, especially with turbocharged models. That's why all their cars are faster than they should be, given published power to weight ratio.
Mine dyno’d at 370 standard somehow. No exhaust mods or anything.
Cheeky remap eh Mr Joel ? 😂. Worst kept secret ever!!
go and get the MHD Stage 1 + XHP software bro :) its a very safe tuning.
420hp 580 NM
When I am done with the "taxman" next summer, I am desperate to start a project of my own. I really envy you - in a positive way of course - for all the excitement with your new car right now! But I am never going to sell the Z4 ;-)
Hehehe
Interesting video particularly around BMW stated performance figures. I had my M140 dyno' d last year at stock and I had a quoted figure of 357BHP. This year after having a Remus axle back exhaust fitted it was dyno' d with a figure of 370bhp. I have had a stage 1 remap since and now the figure is 470BHP. 😃👍
You’re dyno is lying
@@Addselwyn I think I got carried away a little with the remap figure and I plan to go to Surrey rolling road to see how different the figures are. My stock figure was done by Surrey Rolling Road but the remap figure by a well known company in Hampshire.
@@andrewlee5237 makes sense now 👍
Sounds about right, the exhaust will have made minimal difference with the cat still in place. My 140 made 358bhp standard and 435 stage 1 with 612nm/450lb/ft. I know Litchfield are known for pushing stage 1's up to 450 when no other tuners will.
Yeah that sounds about right to me
Does your Quicksilver Exhaust also have another sport downpipe ?!
Otherwise, with stock downpipe, I really doubt that you’ll see extra 16hp just by a different mid silencer & muffler
It’s not the exhaust. BMW has conservative horses, and his car likely made this hp stock
Mines getting a remap aswell in January mate😂😂😂. Expecting big gains from yours though, being tuned pipe and turbo'd.
That’ll be interesting to see what you get! Yeah it’s been done and the increase is pretty significant!
@@itsjoel obviously mine won't be massive but I'm getting a back street private map. Not an off the shelf company 1 so could be a little more interesting yes.
It'd be interesting to see how a Litchfield stage 1 would go up against a wrench studios stage 1👀👀👀 I'm looking to go stage 2 Jan or beginning of feb,so if you want to make a video out in Mexico before then I'd be more than happy to.
Always up for a trip to Mexico
Cool rims bro! What's the name of those?
Thanks dude! They’re Matt bronze Bola B11 19s
I’m keen to see what you get with the tune. I got my 140i about 4 months ago, MPE fitted and a Celtic tune but no idea what it’s at!
lovely car, but I must say I'm glad I went with the blue, I feel like as it is the car flies under the radar, in grey, it's a little too understated.
love that red interior though, mine is boring black :(
I know what you mean. Definitely could do with a more striking colour!
BMW's 335 horsepower figure is engine horsepower. Did that Dyno convert wheel horsepower to crank horsepower, or is that horsepower measured at the wheels? There's usually about a 15% loss between the engine and the wheels.
Mine made 356 stock without an exhaust so would take with a pinch of salt. Curious to see what it makes stage 1 👀
Interesting
Once you go catless downpipe your insurance will be void, so no point in declaring any other mods 😂
Just a bunch of morons who don’t declare mods.
No, that’s NOT what’s advertised. 356 - 16hp for the exhaust = 340, AT THE WHEELS. Bmw rates it at 335hp, AT THE CRANK. So figuring 20% power loss through the torque converter, transmission, and driveline, it is putting out about 425 BHP, at the CRANK (not counting the exhaust. 445 bhp with the exhaust.) So yes, this motor is WAY UNDERRATED.
(Btw, I have a 2020 M240i x-drive. It hasn’t been on the dyno yet. It’s COMPLETELY stock, so I want to get it on one. I just haven’t found a place near me with a 4 wheel dyno.)
If you pause it at 7:23 the print out says 293.2 wheel power. For whatever it’s worth. I’ve been confused about that too. 293.2 wheel would make sense with 356 crank. But what’s confusing is I didn’t think dynos like that measured crank HP. Looks like they took the wheel power and added the 20% formula to get the engine power of 356.2. it has drag power at 69.2 which I take is drive train loss because when you add that with the wheel power you get the 356.2. I have a 2018 240 and I’m like you, always assumed they were underrated.
@@JonBecker81 , yeah, I’ve never seen a dyno work like that. Usually “max power” is the hp reading at the wheels after using the formula hp=torque x RPM / 5252.
All I can say is, a 3700 lb. automatic transmission car with 335 hp, at the crank, therefore about 268 at the wheels, isn’t doing 0-60 in 4.2 seconds. Not possible, even with AWD.
Something is up.
@5:40 he says BRAKE horsepower. 356 at the crank, not at the wheels.
@@johnyou35 yeah seemed off to me too. Maybe it’s a heart breaker dyno 🤔
@@rkan665 yeah, everything you need to see is at 7:23
Make a expenses to run video. I want to buy this car but don’t know if the maintenance is going to break the bank
Coming soon
Exahust sounds nice but not sure you’re going to get as much as 16bhp from a cat-back.
Wasn't this the remap video Litchfield is so far off from Wales? 😂😂
Remap video comign
What wheels?
Bola B11 in matte bronze
Dyno people, sounds like something from Dr who.
On the far side of the over the pond map, I tested my 2005 Z4 3.0i at Sonoma Raceway. The printout said that it produced 187 BHP (215 BHP is what BMW listed when new). Considering that the smog requirements are strict in California and that the gas is poor (91 RON with 10% Ethanol) and that I have 161,000 miles and that the roller size was scaled for Ford Mustangs the result was all-in-all OK. But when you consider all things relative then all California cars are equally affected, i.e., they still can't go around me along twisty roads :)
That’s really interesting!
Will those calipers go red?
What's wrong with blue? 🤷🏻♂️
Not sure on the blue actually but doubt I’ll change them, doesn’t bother me that much! Think I’d change them to carbon black if I was gonna do it
@@Tokyodrift5000 nothing just a fair question
There’s only one reason you’d go to litchfield haha ;)
I wonder what stage you’ve gone for...
Haha yes you know. I’ve done a stage 1 remap, video soon
Great I’ve been most tempted by litchfield for the b58 tuning and your video will be a great help :) 👍
Remap/Chiptune ?
😜😜😜
Mate,I think your mask was upside down.
Usually quoted figures are rated by the crankshaft. In this case it seems like BMW have quoted wheel power. Factoring about a 15% loss with RWD, I'd say roughly these are your crankshaft figures:
Actual: 355 hp / 362 ft-lb (418 hp crank) (425 ft-lb crank)
355 hp is at the crank (factoring in DTL). 293 WHP. Check it out 7:26
Litchfield is in Tewkesbury, not Wales 😉😂
Same thing right?
@@itsjoel Hahaha
He doesn’t even know where he is? And you are no different from him both of you haven’t got a clue! Lichfield is actually in Staffordshire, it’s actually near Birmingham! 🤣🤣🤣😂😂
@@c3bam1 I was talking about Litchfield tuning you big melt
Take the 16hp for exhaust with a pinch of salt, unless it’s a full system including a sports/decat that’s the only way you will gain off exhaust system, think about it, how would a cat back system increase power?
Cats add alot of heat into the exhaust flow. Turbo cars in particular can gain from a better flowing and also larger diameter cat back as it evacuates the hot exhaust flow easier.
Hoter air takes up more volume than cold, which is why removing it faster through less restriction or a larger diameter is beneficial.
It's also true why a decat is so effective as your removing a major heat adding flow restriction.
To be clear I'm not advocating this exhaust gives 16hp, the stock exhaust may well be perfectly suited to its application. However after the Litchfield map the exhaust benefits might show more clearly.
I plan on getting a catless downpipe soon
It's actually 355 crank 293 actual wheel hp
Don’t think you’d get 16 bhp off an exhaust. Sounds like exhaust salesman talk.....
Who knows. I think free flowing air does help
bmw quote 335 bhp stock, not 340.
us 335 eu 340
I reckon you are going to see 440ish with remap.
You do realise your insurance is now void though
Insurance has been changed accordingly :)
Stop talking rubbish. You can insure a remapped car you clown
At the wheel
That quicksilver did nothing. They all make 350-360bhp bone stock. I wouldn’t act all shocked about it mate 😂
That’s just quicksilver talking BS to sell the item lol. Either way with or without it you’d get the same results.
Anyone Reccomend any insurance companies for this car cheapest quote is £1200 absolute joke! 10 years licence holder with full entitlement for Hgv’s and motorbikes, 5 year no claim no points no accidents 26 year old!!! Insurance companies rip off
30 years old, 10 years ncd and I'm paying £400. It's very dependent on postcode.
Time to unfollow you
no one cares

@@itsjoel prob cause you think the exhaust actually gives you 16 hp
@@itsjoel or because your comparing crank hp to whp
