My granny used to make a variation of this, minus the onions. She would fix it with breakfast, and serve it ladled over biscuits. She called it tomato gravy. She'd serve it with scrambled eggs, bacon and sausage, and grits. Miss those meals. She was a good cook.
Listen, I’ve cooked for 53 years, winning my first pie baking contest at the age of 8. Can tell you, without a single reservation, (no pun intended) that this has to be the best tasting tomato recipe of all time. My husband, who used to think the words for vegetables were actually profanity in disguise, tried a small bowl of these tomatoes, and wants them on our Thanksgiving table! He says he’d rather have these tomatoes than actual stuffing. I almost fell over. He says these breaded tomatoes are better than any other sides at KFC, thinks they’d have been a great menu addition. I agree. I love hearing you tell the story of acquiring this recipe and I’m so so glad you shared it with us. Thank you again. ❤
I grew up eating this dish. My Mom would make it at least 2-3 times a month. She didn’t add oil, she added extra butter in place of the oil. She also made macaroni and tomatoes. Both are my favorite dishes.
This is a side dish I didn’t eat until I was an adult. I wasn’t a fan of tomatoes as a child. I guess it took a while for my taste buds to mature. 😁 But now this is one of my favorites! Thank you for watching.
Me too! Macaroni and tomatoes is my comfort food. I grew up in the south but have raised my children in the northern midwest, so they have learned a variety of foods over the years. But if I make a pot of macaroni and tomatoes, they come running! I've never had breaded tomatoes but I've heard of them and I fully intend to make this recipe.
@DANABRUNICK same here and we are from Maryland originally now I reside in the beaches of Delaware for 34 years now. Salmon cakes and macaroni and tomatoes.
My mother made this dish late 50s-60s. She called stewed tomatoes. She added margarine instead of oil. She always served with liver and onions and mashed potatoes. I have since learned that in order to absorb iron in liver you need to serve with a high vit C veg or fruit. She was smart. It was delicious.
My mom made this also and it was called stewed tomatoes and I still make stewed tomatoes . We grew tomatoes and mom canned them so we always had them until time to harvest again.
My mom called it stewed tomatoes too and I wouldn't even try it! I thought it looked gross. I have garden tomatoes coming out my ears right now and I'm going to try this!
My mom and grandmother made tomatoes this way using leftover biscuits or dumpling dough. Never used store-bought canned tomatoes -- fresh out of the garden or home-canned. Tomato dumplings has been a favorite dish of mine for over 70 years (I rarely have leftover biscuits). Never dreamed such a dish would be sold in a restaurant.
My grandmother used to make this, but we never got her recipe. Sadly, she passed away and so did her recipe, so when I saw this on your video, I shared it with my mom and she shared it with her brothers and sister! Everyone is grateful, and it tastes just like grandma’s! Thank you for this video! And every time we make it, we’ll think of her!
Thank you so much for posting this recipe. My husband is 60 yrs old & has always mentioned his mom making "stewed tomatoes on bread". Of course, he never knew how she made & i have never tried. I will surprise him this week by making your recipe. I hope it floods him with pleasant memories! P.S. I made deviled eggs this morning using the Kraft Sandwich Spread...they were simple & delicious 😛
I remember my grandmother making what they called tomato gravy. We ate it over cornbread. You know, people in Alabama have to have that cornbread. I will use the toast. Always fun exchanging recipes with each other. You guys are great. You seem more real than many of the people with a cooking show. I make the time each day to watch at least one video. You are so kind talking to each other. God Bless and protect you.
You are just so sweet to have said all that. We really do appreciate it. Thank you so much for watching our videos. Your encouragement means a lot to us! May God Bless You.
My mom and dad lived through the depression so they were very frugal with money. My dad planted a huge garden every year with lots of tomatoes that my mother would can up as stewed tomatoes. We always ripped bread up and put the stewed tomatoes over top. That would be our dinner. I’m so going to make this. Thank you
Im fairly new to watching this channel, and for the most part, just about love everything you make. What really stands out though, is your overall style, the laying out the ingredients and your instructions. Most importantly, your demeanor and respect for your wife; blowing off the food and offering your wife the 1st taste really! 🥰
He really is the SWEETEST guy in the world. And I know I'm partial, but I think he is a great cook and an excellent teacher, as well! Thank you so much for watching our video. We really do appreciate it.
I couldn't agree more, so easy to listen to, and I think it's important to have a story with them. A nice soft spoken voice and smile goes a long way. Nice to have your sweet camera lady actually talk in the videos too. Usually they don't, and I know many would love to. That is if they have a camera person. I am fairly new also, a few months, so catching up looking at older videos. All are very good. Love from Western, N.Y.
I agree! They are so easy to follow. The only problem is I’m on a mission to lose a lot of weight and some of these recipes are hard to resist😂. Keep up the good work and don’t change anything. If you have low calorie dishes please share.
My mom made this for us in the 50s and 60s and I loved it.I had forgotten about it till I saw this. I cant wait to make it. I only wish my mom was still here, as Im sure she would enjoy having it again. Thank you so much for bringing back all the wonderful memories.
Thank you so much for making this. My mom is the only person that I knew of, who made tomatoes and bread. I love it and haven’t had it, for maybe 50+ years. I always thought it was something my mom made up to feed us kids. Thank you for this, I can’t wait to make it for my grandkids. Thank you thank you thank you ❤
Wow im almost 76 and i was about 5 first time i ate this .my mom made this to use up extra bread and used home canned tomatoes i love it when she mde this dish. And i was thinking about a month ago boy id like to have some tomatoes n bread. Now i will thanks so much. Brought back memories.
Reminiscent of ratatouille without the zucchini. We also had canned, stewed tomatoes growing up, but mom did not doctor them up, nor did we have it with toast. This looks amazing. I'm definitely going to try it very soon 😋
I am 72 and was born and raised in NW Illinois. One of the dishes my mother made when I was under 12 yrs old, and I still remember, is breaded stewed tomatoes!!!! Her mother and aunts were from Tennessee. So this is definitely a Southern recipe. My mother also made THE best chicken and dumplings, fried chicken, divinity candy, homemade yeast rolls. Her cooking skills were born from the South! Your tomatoes look delicious and my mouth is watering! Thank you for this wonderful recipe! ❤
I grew up eating this, my parents were from Pennsylvania, it was called stewed tomatoes and was a meal used when grocery money was short. I'm 80 years old, so this recipe is older then Miss Claudia.
I want to make this, but I think I'd like it with macaroni better. I have an aversion to wet bread. To make it with macaroni, do you cook the macaroni first, or put it into the tomatoes to cook? It looks delicious, so I will try it with the toast.
My grandmother used to make this with butter instead of oil. We called it stewed tomatoes and we loved it! I need a dish for our next church dinner so I came to your site to find one. Your other dishes have been big hits! This will be the next one that I take! Thanks so much! I can always count on you for the perfect dish!
Anyone that grew up in the south in the 40's , 50's and 60's ate blackeyed peas and stewed tomatoes every January 1st. I never heard of breaded tomatoes but it is the same as stewed tomatoes that I grew up with.
In grade school during the 1960's we had homecooked meals and quite often we would have something very similar to this. There were so many kids that didn't like them, but they were my favorite, so they would give me theirs! I don't remember them looking as creamy, but they sure sound like what we had. I can't wait to try this and see how many memories come flooding back!
I made this tonight ...sorta ! I didn't have 2 cans of diced tomatoes so I used my home canned stewed tomatoes. It was absolutely delicious ! Thank you for sharing !
I'm sure that change made no difference. We love this dish, and we are so happy to hear that you have enjoyed it as well! Thanks so much for the feedback on it!
Ah, my mama used to make this at least once a week! I'm 80 years old and I haven't had since my kids were growing up. I was widowed young and had no kids so I stopped making it. I'm inspired to make it again for them.
y mom used to make Breaded Tomatoes using tomatoes out of the garden and she never put flour in hers or sugar while she was cooking the tomatoes and she never put onions in hers, the sugar was put on at the table by each individual and the bread was put in without being toasted. I agree every dish tastes better with onion in it and you can never have too much onion. I make it now occasionally using canned tomatoes and I put the sugar in while cooking.
Thank you for reminding me of Mom's tomatoes and toast. After cubing the toast she would sauté the cubes in butter, minced shallot and a pinch of oregano until golden. Then she'd add that to the tomatoes. I haven't prepared it in years but I shall do so tonight! Love your channel, this bit of peace, entertainment, inspiration and cameraderie is why I pay for YT premium! God Bless and Keep you both!
My mother made this dish for years. She assembled it all in a casserole dish and then baked it off for 30 min or so. Same ingredients just as you did. You may want to try it that way. Best wishes
My mother (82) and I love to watch your videos. I want to let you know that we made this Breaded Tomato dish tonight. It was wonderful. I am so glad when I find something my mom will eat. Thank you and God Bless you both.
My mother made these her whole life! It was popular during the depression when they didn't have a lot. Thanks for posting this recipe; they are so delicious!
You are right about the breaded tomato recipe at Claudia Sanders. I worked there as hostess a couple years ago and enjoyed these tomatoes pretty often. The beets are out of this world also. I live about 3 miles from the restaurant and drive past it most days. Thanks for sharing the video🍅
Was looking over your recipes and saw this. My 1st generation German grandmother made this with home-canned tomatoes and day-old bread. As a teenager when I wanted a snack I’d make breaded tomatoes with a lot of chopped onion. I’m going to make some now Thanks for the reminder.
My mom used to make a similar dish. She called to stewed tomatoes. It had fresh bread instead of toasted bread. I did not like it as a kid, but your recipe looks worth trying. Thanks for the memories!
My Mom also made this when I was growing up. If she had a green bell pepper, she might cut it up in there also. She almost always served it along a meat loaf or as you do with chicken.
My momma made this but didn’t put the bread in it , we called it tomato gravy and served it over rice and fried pork chops along with biscuits , I still make this recipe today and love it !! God bless ❤️🙏🙋🏻🌈🌈
Being born and raised in NC, I’ve never heard of this. I’m definitely going to try it. I just found your channel a few days ago and I can’t wait to try all the recipes I’ve watched. You guys seem so down to earth. Thank you.
country folks from Ohio, West Virginia; and Kentucky have made this for centurys. We call it stewed tomatoes. Made the same way butit is so much better when our tomatoes are ripe and we use them straight from our garden. I am eighty yeas old and I still make this often.
Yep, our family grew up on this dish, only difference was used onion powder, no flour to thicken, (toast does it), no oil, just butter, and added dill to finished recipe. In later years I tweeked it for speed by using store bought croutons (your choice on seasoning-selection to change it up)
I ate this as a young kid and so lpved it and for years now i would think of the memories and wanted a recipe for it and NOW i have the recipe and i will make it and very much enjoy it . Thank You very much .
My mom used to make a dish similar to this using leftover biscuits and homegrown tomatoes. Growing up I didn't like it at all. So I made your recipe for my son and I and we both loved it!❤ I'm pretty sure my mom didn't add the onions. I think your way (Mrs. Claudia Sanders) is more savory with the addition of onions. Very good, and I will be making it more. Thank you for all your good recipes you teach us to make!
My mama made this when I was a little girl and I'm 75 now and make it. I've always loved it. Never heard or seen anyone making this any more. But on a family visit in Virginia, we went to a little diner that made it and I loved it.
I love breaded tomatoes! My mother used to make them all the time for the family. But my kids, NO! They hate soggy bread so I haven’t had them for years but will make your recipe for them soon as my kids are all grown and gone now. Thank you!
I grew up eating this and I am 68 years old this year. My mom didn't toast the bread, she didn't put flour in the onions, and she didn't add the oil. She would saute the onions in onions, and while they were cooking, she would cut up bread using the crust. When the onions were finished she added 1 quart crushed tomatoes, added some sugar and bring to a boil. Once the tomatoes cooked for about 15 mins she would add the torn bread pieces and it would cook for about another 5 mins. Then she would add a flour slurry, She would cook that until it became thick then add a couple of tablespoons of butter. Always tasted good especially because the tomatoes were canned from our garden every year. Yummy!
This is a dish that I learned to love when my family moved to Virginia in 1962. It is called stewed tomatoes, and it is always served with black-eyed peas or some type of dry beans, mostly navy. I absolutely love it and make it right often.
I will have to try this. As one who has eaten home growed maters with leftover biscuits (the food of the angels) for many years, I'm sure this tomato/bread dish will be larrapin. It's been years and years since I've been to Claudia's. Fanciest looking restaurant I've ever been to. The Greek architecture of the front of the building will blow you away. Looks like you don't dare go near the place without a tuxedo, but you are welcome in your blue jeans and t-shirt.
I am so thrilled to get this recipe! I found your channel this week, and saw this. A restaurant near my home in NC used to have this, and I loved it so much. I was so disappointed when they cut it from their menu, and now I can make it myself. My mother and grandmother used to make tomato gravy which was tomatoes, onions and flour and was eaten with cornbread or biscuits. Thanks for the recipe.
I found a recipe for "Secret Cornbread " on Dylan Hollis' RUclips channel. I have been wondering what to pair with it. Now I know. Just add a bottle of wine. 😅
I made this recipe for Thanksgiving. I used gold & white, hand-painted antique sauce dishes for each person, and the red tomatoes looked so nice. Everyone loved it. Thank you.
I lived in Shelbyville for 16 years. Probably 3 or 4 miles from Claudia’s. I’ve been there many times and took my Mother there when she visited me. I knew several people that worked there. It was indeed delicious ❤
I’m 77 now and when I was in high school, this was served a couple times a month at school. I just always loved it. And have needed on my life so I never had a recipe. Now I have one! Thank you so much for this and all your wonderful recipes. You guys are a blessing ! ❤
This has to be what I had in school in the southern Sandhills of North Carolina in the 50s and 60s. Nobody else in school liked it, so I would trade everything on my plate so I could have lots of it. Definitely trying this. I can't thank you enough. God bless you both.
OMG, I love breaded tomatoes, but never had them this good. I’m 76 years old. My stepmother grew up in Shelbyville & Louisville & I remember her telling me ( not the whole story, but some of it ). I was sooo happy to here the whole story. It brought back really good memories & loving thoughts of my Stepmother. ❤😂🎉
We love that food can connect us to sweet memories. And we think this recipe is so delicious. We are very happy that you have appreciated the story of this recipe. We hope you are having a great night.
We just went to CS yesterday- had to get the vegetable plate- which is 8 veggies- I said hold the corn pudding and I got double breaded tomatoes- I knew I would be getting a to-go box home. Also- I remember that taste of home recipe- that’s where I got my recipe for the tomatoes- so thanks so much! Cool story. I’ve just subscribed to your channel. Can’t wait for more good recipes. Subie
My mom made it also with bacon, onion, green pepper and just a little sugar. I never liked it sweet. Stewed tomatoes. Well known dish in the 40’s and 50’s.
Hi Tom and Melissa well I have to tell you this is one of my favorite dish also . My grandmother and my mother used to make these and I could not get enough of them. I'm 71 now and I still enjoy them so much. Your recipe is just slightly different than mine. My mother never toasted her bread and sometimes they would use bacon drippings instead of oil. Everything else was the same and is absolutely delicious. Thank you for sharing your story.❤
This looks delicious I want to try this. Tom, Have you ever had or cooked Tomato Dumplings? My father use to cook this for us kids for lunch with leftover biscuits. They were great. If you do know how to cook them please share a video on them or send me the recipe. I'd be grateful forever. Thumbs up to your video. Stay well & safe guys. God Bless. Btw, Congratulations on your letter to the magazine. It is an awesome story.
I am so glad to have this recipe! My sweet Mom passed forty years ago and I never found her recipe, however I do remember she would broil the bread in the oven with butter and sugar on it, plus add fresh sweet corn cut off the cob. No oil but butter instead, and a little sugar on the fresh chopped tomatoes. Thank you!!
I went to seminary in Wilmore, Kentucky. Never ate there but did hear about the restaurant. Thank you for the recipe. I have a counter full of garden fresh tomatoes. Now I know how to use them up!
Like many others I grew up eating bread and stewed tomatoes. Thank you for a reminder for me to make now after many years. I like how you bring back some of what I call good down-home cooking. Another favorite is stewed tomatoes with noodles, helped feed a house full of kids growing up at garden time. Mama would make the noodles.
My husband was a district manager for Kentucky Fried Chicken for 17 years. We were at a convention in Hawaii with him & have a photo with him. I remember when Taste of Home did the restaurant recipe request but I didn't see this recipe in it. It's probably better than my grandma's. I'm going to have my husband watch this video while I make these breaded tomatoes.
Colonel Sanders is quite the legend! My father met him when he was working in a grocery store in Corbin, Kentucky, home of the original KFC. Mr. Sanders shopped there for his meat. It's neat that you got to meet him and have your picture made with him. I wish my dad had a picture with him. I really hope you enjoy the breaded tomatoes. We think they are marvelous! Thanks so much for watching our channel. We really do appreciate it.
My mom used to make breaded tomatoes and I hated them but I know she didn’t toast her bread and I only ever remembered her using the whole canned tomatoes. And definitely no oil that I recall. Anyway, your story was very interesting. That’s great that “Taste of Home” made a point of letting you know the recipe would be published. Most magazines would just post it without letting you know. And neat that they have the article displayed in the restaurant.
What a cool story that was my all time favorite restaurant she would of loved this story and recipe mostly you’re a wonderful cook just love watching you cook you’re such an inspiration and your wife is very special as well behind the camera scene
I am an octogenarian and this was a side dish that my mother made at least 3 or 4 times a month as long as I can remember except she didn’t toast the bread and she called it stewed tomatoes. It was a family recipe from Arkansas.
I hope you included this in your book. I just ordered mine. I’ll tell you that story when I receive it. I’d like to serve it to my kids. They’re grown now but when growing up, hated my mother’s recipe for breaded tomatoes because of the soggy bread. By putting it in last, you might have solved our problem. I love breaded tomatoes but we seldom had them because of the kids. Thanks for your life of cooking and your wonderful recipes.
My Mom made a dish very similar but used cornstarch instead of flour and croutons on the top of the casserole, She called it scalloped tomatoes..This was in the fifties.
I’m an 80 year old and my grandma used to make this.. of course she was raising a family in the depression era.. her recipe was much simpler.. just canned tomatoes and bread salt , pepper , sugar… she brought the tomatoes to a boil, turned it down to simmer for a few minutes..add seasoning, she tore the bread into pieces and dropped it into the tomatoes.. they were like dumping.. she did put butter in at the end .. your recipe looks delicious too.. my family doesn’t like cooked tomatoes like this , so I don’t make it often for just me..
I have to share this with you. My mother suffered from Alzheimer's .she used to make this when I was young. I said mom do you remember the dish you made with tomatoes bread it had sugar in it. I tried to describe it to her. She didn't remember it, but it sounded good why don't you make it. I just smiled, and said maybe I will. Thanks for the memories.
That's such a cool story and thank you for sharing the background of KFC with us too! Adding this to the going to try list. God Bless y'all and thank y'all for sharing!
My mom made this all the time when I was a kid. Never used oil - a few tablespoons of bacon grease and instead of toast it was stale left over biscuits. I can still smell it cooking! So good with pork chops and mashed potatoes.
My mom made this often .we called it stewed tomatoes. She grew up eating this in the 1930 s40s she was married to my dad in 52. Plus my grandma , my dads mom served this and grew up on it .she was born in 1900. This recipe has a long history. It is so yummmy.
Yes, it certainly does. And it's one of my favorite side dishes ever. They are so good! Thanks so much for watching our channel. We really do appreciate that you are spending some time at the table with us.
My family has made this dish as early as 1915. We didn't add oil either. It's still one of my favorite and I make it or tomatoes and macaroni a couple times a week.
I grew up.eating this. My grandmother made this for us all the time. Usually she used fresher tomatoes from garden and bread wasn't toasted. I thought it was something she made up. Lol haven't had this in 50 years! But loved it.
I've been wanting a good recipe for breaded tomatoes all my life. In grade school our cook Mrs. Zimmerman made the most delicious breaded tomatoes that I have ever had. If this is as good as her's, you will win the Gold Star from me. We used to stop in Corbin, Ky. every vacation back home to Tennessee and we always stopped at the original KFC. So good. Good video.
I saw this video a while back and made note of the recipe. Today is the day I make it to go along with a pot of pinto beans. I love the story and your joy at sharing the recipe. Thank you, Rocquie
What a delightful story!!! I must share this with you all ... this must be a southern dish, because my aunt would always bring this dish to family gatherings and we all loved this dish. I grew up in Madison County, Kentucky. Ever now and then I get a hunger for this side dish and I make it for my family. Thank you for sharing. All the best!
I love breaded tomatoes so much and very rarely see them offered in restaurants. Thank you so much for this recipe. I am going to make them and I know they’re going to be delicious.
We really enjoy them. You’re right that not many places offer them now and that is one reason we requested the recipe all those years ago. We knew we just had to make them ourselves. I hope you love them as much as we do!
Glad you like them! Claudia Sander's Dinner House is one of our favorite places to eat of all times! We hope if you try our recipe that you'll find them just as good. (Well, maybe close!) Thanks so much for watching our video.
My paternal granny who lived in Berea,KY made this dish and she’d bake it after adding the bread in a used disposable washed pie tin so she wouldn’t have to clean the sticky baked tomato’s! She’d bake it at 350 for 20 minutes after she added the bread. It was like a delicate jam. it was divine an one of my favorite sides. The original KFC in Corbin is a lovely place to visit an eat!
Serendipity is the weirdest thing. Just a few days ago I was thinking of my mothers’ delicious “breaded tomatoes” that she made for us while growing up in 60’s & 70’s Indiana. I’ve been CRAVING this dish but didn’t have the recipe…..and then you popped up! I think this unusual recipe is pretty old as my Mom received it from her mother who probably received it from her mother…etc…who were descended from the original Kentucky / Indiana pioneer stock from 1800’s & before. My point is that this recipe could be VERY old. Thank you SO much for hooking me up with this extremely delicious, relatively unknown but memorable recipe! Can’t wait to make it 🥰
Love your channel. Also love your stories. I will be trying all of your recipes and can't wait to get started. I was raised on good country food. There's nothing better. I will let you know how my dishes turn out. Thank you both for great videos.
✍Hello Tom and Melissa...I'm 78 and grew up eating breaded tomatoes. I don't know if the recipe came from the depression or from my dad growing up in a big family on a farm in W.VA (born 1914) and the times that they were. My girls (now 60-54) never liked eating breaded tomatoes but I still make them once in a while. Your recipe is very different from the one I use. Mine is made with butter, little sugar, and a few slices of white bread torn up and cooked all together. Enjoyed the video and the memories. God Bless LuvYa! Bye from Ohio🌹
I'm originally from WV. We just called them tomato dumplings. They were soooo good! I tend to make macaroni and tomatoes because it's quicker lol..Both are great!!
Tom & Mellisa my mom had nine children and the oldest now is 81… she fix this when things got tuff and dad was away out of town working. Oh she knew how too spread food that would feed us all. My Aunties were the same way. I have so many recipes that they’ve done and still make 😊 Grew up with six brothers and two sisters 😂 I saw enjoyed watching them cook and ask questions, such wonderful memories. I think that’s why I come here see how others grew up eating and there stories.
Vicki, sounds like we had a similar upbringing. We ate macaroni and tomatoes too!! I like to make it to go with salmon cakes, so yummy.
Dana Brunick, yep, we must have had the same upbringing. Salmon patties and macaroni and tomatoes here too.
We called it strewed tomatoes too
@@nancywilkinson2161exactly stewed Tomatoes 🍅
My mom made this also and it was called stewed tomatoes and I still make stewed tomatoes . We grew tomatoes and mom canned them so we always had them until time to harvest again.
I want to try it but don’t want to make a large batch. Any suggestions?
Cut recipe in half. Use 1 can of stewed tomatoes.@@FloJoBum
Oh, I love the story about Claudia Sanders. My mother made this dish and she called it stewed tomatoes. I really enjoy your recipes.
My mama called it stewed also...The taste is still in my mouth-memory.
My mom called it stewed tomatoes too and I wouldn't even try it! I thought it looked gross. I have garden tomatoes coming out my ears right now and I'm going to try this!
Done correctly, and with lots of luv, the dish is sublime.@@grannygoes7882
I just love how homey you both are. Thanks for being so sweet and sharing timeless recipes. You're the best! 🥰
My Mom as well called it stewed and it was always a favorite of mine. Still is for that matter.
Thank you
Mom always used our home canned tomatoes too
My grandmother used to make this, but we never got her recipe.
My mom made this all the time except the bread was not toasted! YUM!
We really enjoy this recipe. Thank you so much for watching.
My mom too,absolutely delicious.
My mother didn’t toast the bread and oil. She also used less sugar. My favorite!
I ate this as a kid and My mom use untoasted bread.theres nothing special about this dish where you n.v need a damn recipe
One of the dishes my mother made when I was under 12 yrs old, and I still remember, is breaded stewed
tomatoes!!!!
Breaded tomatoes and macaroni and tomatoes was a staple in our house growing up. Yummy!
My mother always served fried okra with her peas and tomatoes.
I remember having this at my friend's grandma's house when I was in college. I liked it so much that she wrote the recipe down for me!
Great story! We are so glad to have you watching.
I love baking biscuits and having them with this. Tomato gravy and biscuit .
We hope you enjoy them!
My grandmother use to make this, without the oil and onions. We called it stewed tomatoes. I'll bet it is good.
Im from South East PA and we always add celery ,onion green pepper ,and I add a lil garlic to make stewed tomatoes
I made this for my then boyfriend, couldn't get rid of him. 52 yrs we are still married, eating bread and tomatoes, and tomatoes and corn.
y mom used to make Breaded Tomatoes using tomatoes out of the garden and she never put flour in hers or sugar while she was cooking the tomatoes and she never put onions in hers, the sugar was put on at the table by each individual and the bread was put in without being toasted.
That also sounds heavenly
my best friends mom made this. I haven't had this in over 50 years. YUM. Thank you
I don't remember a time when my mom didn't make this and I was born in the 40's. Love it still.
I love you you add the back story, history, family connection to these recipes ❤❤❤❤ thank you
My mother made this dish for years.
That is awesome! We absolutely love when we receive comments like this. Makes our day! Thank you so much for letting us know.
My mother made these her whole life! It was popular during the depression when they didn't have a lot. Thanks for posting this recipe; they are so delicious!
My mother made these years ago and I have been looking for this recipe for years. Thank you so much.
Strew tomatoes you buy in the can. N add bread sugar that all
You are right about the breaded tomato recipe at Claudia Sanders.
I worked there as hostess a couple years ago and enjoyed these tomatoes pretty often. The beets are out of this world also.
I live about 3 miles from the restaurant and drive past it most days.
Thanks for sharing the video🍅
What were done to the beets to make them extra special? I don’t like beets unless they can be prepared in some super special way. Any tips?
Was looking over your recipes and saw this. My 1st generation German grandmother made this with home-canned tomatoes and day-old bread. As a teenager when I wanted a snack I’d make breaded tomatoes with a lot of chopped onion. I’m going to make some now Thanks for the reminder.
My mother was German and this is how she made it also. She didn’t use sugar and flour and such. Just bread and tomatoes that I can recall
My mother was German as well and served it with liver and onions and mashed potatoes. I loved it then and now.
@@Oceanaqua1 Isn’t it funny how there are certain things that just go together for meals. Meal memories are the best😊
@@Kricket2020 yes no sugar or flour. We did add chopped onion and butter, but that could have been my momma’s add on and not Grandma’s.
My mom used to make a similar dish. She called to stewed tomatoes. It had fresh bread instead of toasted bread. I did not like it as a kid, but your recipe looks worth trying. Thanks for the memories!
That's how my mother made it too. With some fried meat grease, salt, pepper, and a little sugar. I still love it now!
Same here ,this was my dad's favorite..
Same here, my mom loved it!
My Mom also made this when I was growing up. If she had a green bell pepper, she might cut it up in there also. She almost always served it along a meat loaf or as you do with chicken.
I just found your channel. I love the practical homey foods, and no bad language. My husband loved this side dish.
In later years I tweeked it for speed by using store bought croutons (your choice on seasoning-selection to change it up)
My Mom use to make a tomato gravy, we called it thickened tomatoes and would eat it over bread. I’ll have to try this!
My grandma made this for us. I loved it when you said, " you can't have too many onions." I agree. I love onions.
We love onions on lots of food. So much flavor!
Laughing here. I haven’t heard/seen anybody use larripin in years and years. Thanks.
Thank you.
It reminds me of stewed tomatoes yummy!!!
I lived in Shelbyville for 16 years. Probably 3 or 4 miles from Claudia’s. I’ve been there many times and took my Mother there when she visited me. I knew several people that worked there.
It was indeed delicious ❤
This was my grandfather and my sons favorite food ever! I still make it for my son. My grandfather liked it with a little sugar.
We think they are so delicious. We love this recipe. Thank you so much for watching our channel. We appreciate it.
I’m 77 now and when I was in high school, this was served a couple times a month at school. I just always loved it. And have needed on my life so I never had a recipe. Now I have one! Thank you so much for this and all your wonderful recipes. You guys are a blessing ! ❤
My mom called this scalloped tomatoes
Subie
Thank you for joining. We really appreciate it!
I’m a new subscriber to your videos. Enjoying the recipes. Your new friend from Canada. 😋👏😋🇨🇦
My mother used to make this back in the 50's. She had variations like adding bell pepper or crisp bacon. We loved it no matter how she fixed it.
Ohhh yummy!! Sounds great w/bacon and green pepper!!
I remember that my grandmother Mama Sue made a dish like yours too. It was good. Thanks for the memories.🎉
Try it! Fantastic! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!
Good recipe ❤❤❤😅😅😅
This is a winner! Me and my husband love it ❤
I am an octogenarian and this was a side dish that my mother made at least 3 or 4 times a month as long as I can remember except she didn’t toast the bread and she called it stewed tomatoes.
My mom called this stewed tomatoes. I love love them.
That is so sweet. I hope she still enjoys it if you get a chance to make it for her.
That's such a cool story and thank you for sharing the background of KFC with us too! Adding this to the going to try list. God Bless y'all and thank y'all for sharing!
You’re so welcome. They are delicious and we hope you enjoy them. Thank you for watching!
So good. Good video.
That is awesome! Love your story! We hope these are as good as you remember!
I have never seen these. I thought my mother had made everything.
I was just as Claudia's today, and had these tomatoes. SO GOOD! Thanks for sharing the recipe.
You're so welcome . We love getting encouraging comments like yours! Thank you so much for watching. We hope you enjoy all of our recipes.
We grew up on this as well. My grandpa was from Kentucky, we’re from North Dakota.
I’d forgotten all about this favorite dish. I haven’t had it in over 60 years! Going to make soon.
I'm originally from WV. We just called them tomato dumplings. They were soooo good! I tend to make macaroni and tomatoes because it's quicker lol..Both are great!!
Macaroni, stewed tomatoes with garlic salt and pepper is what i grew up making!! Then i had them with pork steak and mashed potatoes! Yum!!!
My Grandma used to make tomato dumpings. I wish i had that recipe ❤
