- In this video, I have examined 28 different adaptations of Cinderella produced in the past 25 years, including film, video games, ballets, musicals, and more than a couple of entries into the Cinderella Story franchise. The goal is to examine the ways that this classic fairy tale has evolved in the past quarter of a century to see what it reflects about the changes being made to our society.

What is your favorite Cinderella Adaptation covered here?
Ever After
Cinderella. 1947
Cinderella 2015
Wow out of everything listed I really want some good Chinese American writers to do a remake of Year of the Fish. It could actually be really interesting, especially with the live-action tech we have nowadays
Honestly yes, the more people that aren't white dudes that can reinterpret fairy tales the better
In case any of y'all want a couple of Cinderella book recommendations: Cinderella is dead by Kalynn Bayron (check the content warnings), or Jessica Day George's Princesses of Westfalin trilogy, which does 12 Dancing Princesses, Cinderella, and Little Red Riding Hood (since it's a trilogy, all 3 should be read).
You missed going over Not Cinderella's Type. It may not directly follow the original plot of Cinderella, but it's great in its own way. It even decides to go a different direction and focus on the abuse aspect which was handled very well. I actually did my final paper in Film Appreciation on this movie because I thought it was so good and relatable.
Interesting! I am planning on doing a follow-up to this video at some point, so I will definitely keep it in mind! Thanks
She's named velcro because in the traditional panto the sidekick is called buttons.
Oh my god! Thank you!!!
i absolutely adored this; thank you for crafting and polishing such a labor of love. this was a thoroughly fun watch that added some new productions to my Watch List and gave me much to think about -- especially about hierarchies, but there is much else you brought to attention that im still processing and mulling over in fascination. i was sick today and very exhausted, and watching this was a lovely and much welcomed distraction
i think my favorite Cinderella production is a tie between the 1997 Rodger & Hammerstein (i love the songs, costumes, and characters so much that this is definitely a confort movie of mine) and the original Disney animated one (i love the kid-friendly horror element to Lady Tremaine, the parallels between Cinderella and Bruno, Cinderella's sassiness, and im always the softest for the Spanish version of So This Is Love). Cinderella has always been a favorite character of mine, in no small part due to me having also come from a home with an emotionally abusive parent where i needed the help of my community to secure a place of safety. so this project taking a character, one im so used to seeing belittled for the ways i (most commonly, depending on the adaptation) feel similar to her, with such kindness, reverence, and adept analysis is extremely welcome. this is definitely a video ill be re-watching for years to come. thank you so much for it ♡
Growing up, Cinderella was my favorite princess. I found herself and her struggles very relatable due to my own childhood or lack there of. As someone who is amab, and still presents as such, I was very disappointed to learn that there was only one adaptation of the story where Cinderella was a guy. I was even more disappointed that I haven't seen it yet, I'm going to have to fix that. I wish more adaptations did that and I think there is enough material there to make several versions without it being overdone.
Also, I just found your channel today and after watching this whole video I definitely subscribed to see what else you have and will make.
After starting to rewatch this video, I think the best way to do a modern criticism of Cinderella, is what the horror movie one did. Pointing out the flaw of just hopping that you'll buckle down with suffering that some kind of fairy god mother will save you, for good always things happen to good people, by having a Cinderella story where no fairy godmother is there to save her, so she just surfers, and dies. I think it works better than just have your Cinderella be more independent, for at the end of the day, the story still play into the same themes you're trying to avoid.
Damn man, this is a huge video, but I love how much care was put into each of these Cinderella reviews. Your channel and this video deserves a lot more views and subscribers! Unfortunately quality doesn't immediately equal views, I'm sure you know, but I hope you keep uploading and make these awesome videos. I came from your centaurworld video, so I want you to know that keep it up and more people are sure to watch your awesome catalog of vids!
Yeah, It's a thing where I try to not worry about the numbers as much, which makes it all the more gratifying when they do go up like they've done recently. And I don't plan on stopping what I do anytime soon, so I hope more folks are able to stick around.
Damn dude! kudos to you for these in depth examinations of Every cinderella movie!! you are able to voice your criticism like no other, its very informative and very enjoyable to watch
Thank you kindly! I was a lot of work but glad to hear it was worth it!
Thank you very much for this video! It was very interesting!
You did a great job with putting all of this together! 👠🌹
Glad you enjoyed it!
Amazing video and will be added to perfect long videos to fall asleep to
Happy to join the proud tradition of Video Essayists helping with insomnia
oh my, i didnt expect the video to be 3 hours long
gonna get the popcorn then
Now we need other modern fairy tales adaption ranked like Snow White and Beauty...
I was hoping you’d talk about Rags, Nickelodeon’s version of Cinderella, but otherwise this was a great ranking video!
Absolutely baffled and applause for being able to even watch confessions of an ugly stepsister [due to availability i mean] ive been scouring and cant find anything
It basically involved me buying an AVI rip of the film on a dvd site? It was weird but I’m glad I was able to get it
@@HenryKathman i see.. but also great work on this huge video! !!
Bad Cinderella isn't surprising. There's also What A Girl Wants with the main character being the cool girl to contrast her proper step sister.
Hmm, did you do every Cinderella Story movie? (edit: YOU DID, SACRIFICE WERE MADE AND I AM IN AWE!)
So many sacrifices were made…
Into The Woods is S-tier on *any* list.
If were talking stage show, definitely!
As for the movie... Well I stand by what I said in the video
Yes, all of that.
I had such a good time watching this, thank you for all your hard work!
Bro you're not gonna mention Rags?
I found this a week after having a conversation with my therapist about why I hate most criticisms of the original tale and traditional tellings of it. Most of the criticisms of it boil down to "she didn't do anything to improve her own lot in life, so she was too passive."
I always point out to people that in the time and setting she was in, Cinderella didn't *have* options. She was a girl in an abusive home who didn't have anywhere she could go, no support system, no way to even *have* a backup plan. A girl running off without shelter or family had *terrible* things happen to them. Society didn't care about them, and she would've had no way to survive that didn't involve getting herself into another bad situation to have shelter and food. Good odds that it would be an even worst situation.
Basically, what happened to her was the best case scenario for a girl in her position. And one that has an almost zero percent chance of happening in real life. People basically shame Cinderella and get story for exactly the thing that's the point of it. For her being a girl in a situation with no freedom, no agency, and no way out. One who had been abused and basically gaslit into believing she had less worth than those around her. And I don't mean gaslit in the way the internet loves to overuse it. I mean in its proper definition.
Its what makes Cinderella a fairy tale. Not her circumstances, those were very real. It's the fact that she was saved by the virtue of magic existing in her world and rewarding her for not letting her treatment turn her into a monster.
I had no idea
2:15:33 ALW Cinderella I really wish they took the body mod elements from the Korean horror and leaned into the village's reliance on beauty to win the best town award for tourism.
I saw it live and yes the cast is the highlight, they give their all, and SURE Prince Charming comes back and marries his boyfriend instead so Sebastian can be free BUT the plot holes and lack of any theme or criticism really hinder it.
ALSO, ALW treated the cast like ass and got it cancelled behind their backs....have fun with this one Broadway
Agree, it’s a wonder that people still have ALW’s back with this show
hmmm around the 1 hour mark the subtitles start being way ahead of the talk, maybe that could be fixed Henry
amazing video essay as well
Yeah I’m in the process of taking care of that
Ok it should be fixed now!
Yknow... Rags is a Cinderella story 👀👀👀
Did I miss when you talked about Rags? After Into The Woods it all of a sudden appeared on the list, yet you never talked about it.
Yeah… Unfortunately the footage was lost and I have been working to film and release that as a follow up video. Hopefully I can get that out soon
Bye I was gonna do this exact thing 💀
OH NO! How far into the project were you? I am always happy to highlight people who do similar things
@@HenryKathman I barely started watching the movies lol
Hey, dont want to be rude but you have Rags in the list but you didnt talk about it. I just want to ask if it was a mistake or you just didnt wanna talk about it.
That's an absolutely fair question!
I scripted and filmed the entire Rag's sequence when I was working on this video, but in my hubris of producing this monster, I forgot to edit the segment.
I've been toying around with releasing it by itself as a little bonus video, but I'm not sure if there were enough people clamoring for my piping hot takes about 2012's Rags.
@@HenryKathman thanks for the fast answer. I would really love to hear your opinion about Rags. 😎
I never got the Hype of the 1997 movie with Whitney. Absolutely love the cast, hate the movie.
