SOUTHERN BLOOD serves as a remarkable final testament from an artist whose contributions have truly shaped rock & roll throughout the past four decades. Gregg Allman's first all-new recording since 2011's GRAMMY® Award-nominated solo landmark, LOW COUNTRY BLUES, the album is among the most uniquely personal of the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer's career, an emotionally expansive collection of songs written by friends and favorite artists including Jackson Browne, Willie Dixon, Jerry Garcia & Robert Hunter, Lowell George and Spooner Oldham & Dan Penn, meant to serve as a salutary farewell to his legion of devoted fans and admirers. Allman collaborated on his closing project with manager and dear friend Michael Lehman and GRAMMY® Award-winning producer Don Was, a longtime acquaintance and staunch supporter committed to helping the rock icon actualize his very specific aspirations.
    About GREGG ALLMAN:
Gregg Allman was undoubtedly among rock and roll's greatest and most significant artists, his soul-fired and still utterly distinctive voice one of the defining sounds in all of American music. From his founding role in the one and only Allman Brothers Band to his long and storied solo career, Allman consistently proved himself to be an iconic singer/songwriter and exceptional practitioner of the American blues tradition. Allman accrued a remarkable list of honors over his five decade career, including the ABB's 1995 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award at the 54th Annual GRAMMY® Awards. Allman detailed his brilliant career in 2012's acclaimed memoir, My Cross To Bear. Now available in both hardcover and paperback, the New York Times bestseller chronicles an astonishing life and creative journey burdened by unimaginable loss, alcohol and drug addiction, told with clear-eyed wisdom and sharp hindsight.

When a great songwriter and musician passes away you always try to find comfort in the fact they left you all their great music. The sadness comes in when you hear something like this and it hits home that there won't be anymore.

Gregg's band is fantastic. He put together his beloved horn section and Scott Sharrard guitar highlights the sound. Mark Quinones has added so much to the deep sound. All are very talented musicians. I wish them well and love them all. Gregg loved this band and was so proud of it.

So beautiful. He did have so much left to give but ran out of time. We are left bereft having a hard time accepting his passing. So many wonderful memories at the Beacon misbehaving to a biblical soundtrack of life. Can't help but wonder how difficult this must have been for him knowing his time may be short and still giving to all of us. His legion of fans who take comfort in the smooth soulful timber of his voice. One of a kind.

Since day one and I mean day one of his recording career Gregg knew how to place a lyric, how long to hold the note, phrase the song and hit the right volume in his voice. That comes from really studying the masters first, knowing and especially respecting the roots, having a genuine and sincere appreciation for what has gone before you and then having the soul to deliver the words one at a time. The man wasn't a celebrity or star - he unfortunately became one - the man was a soul singer blessed with a soulful voice who knew how to use it and meant it every time he took a breath. He honored the music and the music came first....and he was decent enough to leave us one more set of tracks. His catalogue from start to finish is a treasure and we are all very fortunate be in and of the same time as he.... thank you Brother Gregg

Growing up in NY I somehow thankfully fell in love with southern rock early on and The Allman brothers became one of my fave bands of all time. Even still to this day..not many bands move me as much as them. I always wish I'd been born earlier so I could have seen Duane and Berry. Very few gtr players to this day can touch the greatness that was Duane Allman. And Berry with his incredible feel and bass lines just made you wanna boogie..he always laid down the perfect groove for what the songs needed. Losing Butch and Gregg in the same year was and still is so rough. I got to see The Allman bros about 25-30 times. I love Derek but for me the lineup with Dickie, Warren and Allen Woody was the closest you could have gotten to the Duane and Berry years. I always prayed they'd get Dickie back in the band. But unfortunately that didn't happen. Though for sure the bros were in more than capable hands with Derek, Warren and Oteil. I'd have to say they took the music to new heights. Still it's hard to believe I'll never get the chance to see Gregg again. His solo band was so smokin!! Not many cats can touch Gregg's intense, emotional and heartfelt singing!! Scott Sharrard..his gtr player in the video seriously kicks ass and I highly recommend checking out his band if you get the chance. They're badass!! I saw them here in brooklyn the night after Gregg passed away..me and a friend couldn't think of a better way to pay tribute and remember Gregg. I'd hoped he would play a bunch of Allmans tunes but he wasn't up for it..understandably so. He was very pained yet said though he didn't really wanna play that night..he felt he owed it to his band to still do the gig. He gave his all that night and you could hear the pain and emotions in his playing. This tune is so Gregg!! He was a true road warrior who loved nothing more than being on the road playin for his fans. Now he's reunited with his brother, Berry and Butch likely rockin out in heaven. Gregg's legacy is one that'll live on forever!! Missing you bigtime brother Gregg..gone but never forgotten!!

LaDonnaRocks Me too! I have cried for weeks. Sounds silly to some, I'm certain. I have loved him and his music 40+ years. There will never be another man like Greggory Allman. I don't think that I have accepted the fact that he's gone. I've never been this way towards any other Celebrity; he feels like family. His music got me thru so many bad times. How ironic, that this album drops on 9/08, as this was the day of my Dad's

C.J. Reed- First let me say, I am so sorry for the tragic loss of your dad.
My deepest condolences to you. It's very difficult losing a parent.
You are in my prayers. I have cried since Gregg's passing
was announced May 27th. God blessed me. I was able to attend
Gregg's funeral. And I, like you, have listened to Gregory Le Noir Allman
      for 45+ years.
I was hooked as soon as I heard his soulful voice and the way he
played his Hammond B3 on the Allman Brothers Band
      LIVE "At Fillmore East"!
I'm a singer myself. I have NEVER been a "groupie" for anyone.
However, I'm like you, I never understood why fans cried uncontrollably,
went to funerals etc. WELL...NOW... I totally get it!!!
Ironically, "Midnight Rider" began playing as I'm writing this message to you.
He said "I'm No Angel" in his song title and lyrics while he was on earth.
I have no doubt...he's a heavenly Angel now.
Much Love and Peace to you always.

Excellent song! I have loved it from the 1st time that I heard it.
It makes me soooo sad, knowing that Mr. Greggory Allman has done his "final album," and I'll never be able to see him perform again. 😢 I know that he's in the ultimate
    "Big House," Heaven, with our
    Heavenly Father ❤🕇 Rest in
    Peace. You're sorely missed.💜

There won't be a better blues singer this good for a long time or maybe ever. My generation will never know a musican as good as Gregg. This song keeps bringing me back to it and when September 8th is here, then this album will get plenty of playing from me. RIP Gregg and you're songs will always stay with me until I die.

Certainly one of the finest masters of our time. Impeccable singing, phrasing. Catalog of time defying songs. He and his brother Duane and band will stand through the ages for what they gave us. From the earliest years when I first heard them they continue to inspire my own music today. Thank you eternally and may God Bless.

Gregg Allman and ABB were the fabric of my life from September, 1970, the first time I heard them. Live at Philly Spectrum. Went to see Johnny Winter And (with Rick Derringer). ABB were the second act, but make no mistake. I was utterly blown away along with the crowd that night. To the point where Johnny had Duane come out for encore.
Gregg's voice, songs and strength were as great as Duane's unsurpassed playing. He was no angel. He had his demons and his bad habits. I just thank Gd he managed to live 69 years despite all the abuse he did to himself.
As hard as it is to listen knowing it is his last work we will hear from him. However, I believe there is an afterlife and am happy that he is again with his brother.
The memory of ABB will live on.

Mitchell Schwartz: Right on brother! What a great lineup for some kick ass blues! I saw the ABB 3 times over the years, unfortunately Duane and Barry were gone by then. I regret I never saw Johnny Winter, first non black to be enshrined in the Blues Hall of Fame. This song is so brilliant, touching, and soulfully haunting, I usually have to dab away a tear or two before it's over.

I'm from right across te river. I've been touched since 1976. I was 8 when I found these spiritual guides to life. 50 this year and they are STILL touching my soul. Saw The Dead April 85 at The Spectrum I lived in Brigantine. We wound up in Weehauken after the show.

Ee J - you hit the nail on the head about this incredibly great song. It’s haunting perfection from the first note to the last. I’m sorry that it’s taken me so long to discover this album. I’ve always had an aversion to Allman Brother’s music, only because Gregg was the spitting image of my younger brother, whom I’ve always had a turbulent relationship with. Glad I got past that to open my ears, at least.

When I first heard this song it immediately gave me chills...I thought it was a song he had written about his own life...then i read the amazing story of how his guitar player wrote the song for him - not having any idea that Gregg was terminally ill! He brought it to Gregg's hotel room and played it - only then did Gregg tell him of his illness, then changed just one line - THE best and most haunting line of the song:
"I hope you're haunted by the music of my soul when I'm gone"
What an amazing story and song and a fitting farewell from one of music's true legends!
