For the first few minutes I was scratching my head wondering what direction you were taking this series but by the half way point it was all making sense. I really appreciate how you set up the information in logical steps. I think I fall into the trap, like many others, of looking for the trees and not understanding the forest. But understanding the broader picture really amplifies the lessons so even if I am scratching my head, I am sticking with these videos because I know they will take me where I want to go :)

You're absolutely right. What I'm trying to do here is get a point across that takes several years in the Air Force for most people to truly understand.
But that understanding is really critical if you want to be effective in an environment where you're flying missions across a large theater with people you don't know.
My goal is to make that point in a few videos that are under ten minutes each. So wish me luck!

Read a book a few months back which you might find interesting: "On Operations: Operational Art and Military Disciplines" by Brett Friedman (Naval Institute Press). His thesis seems to be that while there is certainly operational art which operations staffs are vital to managing, it is a misnomer to define an operational level of warfare. If I recall correctly he thinks the huge size of operations and the ever more crucial nature of logistics has led to thinking that operations are a level of warfare rather than the organization and manifestation of strategy and tactics. Lots of historical examples and analysis. It's an academic theory of warfare rather than practical guidance, but in going against the grain it leads to thinking about things one may have taken for granted.

dude the combat simming community is really off the rails. :) If you tell some people ( who isnt part of the military ) the title of the book you've just read they will most certainly look at you in a funny way. I read books like this and quite enjoy the stuff you can learn from there but man does it sounds like some real nerdy stuff lol. :D

@@neutchain7838 Then they probably found this video uninteresting, because it is not going to help them in playing a flight sim game like DCS. On the other hand, if they are interested in actual warfare. . .

You make a great point, Gort. Doctrine changes as lessons are learned. So I wouldn't be surprised if the conclusions of that book make it into published doctrine some day.
The next video will actually talk about one of the most significant changes. I think it will bring into perspective why we do things the way we do today.
And for anyone reading this I want to be clear that this series won't just focus on theory. We'll be hopping into the cockpit as well. There are a few things that need to explained first for that part to make sense.

@@TheOpsCenterByMikeSolyom I think Mr. Friedman may have an uphill battle in overcoming generations of acceptance of an operational level to war. But in deconstructing that level he raises interesting points that put strategy and tactics into focus.
