Thanx Dan! Of course you could play the part @ 1:23 on the E-string! maybe thats the original way of Alex. But i play this song since more than 25 years that way, i fear i won´t be able to learn it different now :))) .. the age u know! keep rockin´
hey, thanx for the comment! i learned it in the early 80s, all by ear! took me around 2 weeks to play the whole song accurately, included the solo. at this time i was already playing guitar for 3 years. so you are early with just 6 months experience!!! very brave! but i bet, you will make it ... keep rocking!
Hey dude, Is there anyway', you can tell me how do you know when to come in on the very beginning? What is the count from the bell sound? I tried to make my own, 1and 2,3, 1and 2,3, "but after that i can not seem to come up with a timing count that fits? Oh good job.I got the riffs down pretty much, its just coming in at the beginning is hit and miss inconsistent for me
hey Jazzy, thanx for the comment! you won´t believe, but i did not use any tabs! when i learned that song (i think it was around 1986, there didn´t exist tabs and internet was quite on the beginning! i learned that song just by listening!
@Sherm911 @Sherm911 Thanx man, i made the video for people like you. I bet Mr. "EzrinJem2" did not even watch the video until the end. Anyways, there some people out here in youtube, that just want to appear "very smart" but don´t even notice that they are rediculous! rocking greetz from Brazil ...
If he were showing off, there'd be no slow parts to show what he's doing. This video will be great to learn the song for me. Thanks for posting rushyeskansas. I'm a self taught player but lately I've been feeling like it's time to discipline myself and improve on speed/scales. A song like this will help and your slower playing parts in the vid are fine to learn from.
Yeah that part is on the B string, all of it, utilizing slides and double hammer-on/trills on the 5th and 8 frets, I've seen Alex do it live 4 times. BTW he never plays the solo live close to the original, but I tried to get the solo as close as I could minus the one bad sounding note he hits (only noticeable at 50% speed, and barely noticeable then). On stage I'd likely play a phrygian dominant run halfway through the solo similar to what he does live, but more my own style and all legato.
yea, thats what i thought, not even him plays the song always the same way and he really should know how!!! :))) so why should we do so, i prefer to keep the feeling of the songs as good as possible but combined with my sound and style of playing! thats the most important for me! I saw your video and its really damn close to the original, congrats!! I also like your sound and feeling, not talking about the technique ... thats obvious! :))) very good man!!! keep procking Bro!!!
This is absolutely not fake. There's a small lip sync delay but that's it. I think he played all the other parts as well cos the backing track isn't Rush. Anyway, if it is a fake, how much do you think Mr Lifeson charged to play it slowed down?
wow, thats awesome. i can get my left hand on the notes quick enough but i cant pick anywhere near as fast as you. and the bit at 1:16, i play on the 8th fret, 3rd string. also i dont have my 4th finger on the 9th fret when you do the bar chord bit at 1:43. i really wanna nail this song before i die. but dont worry, im 14 so i should have plenty of time.
thanx for the comment. yes you are right i play this part a bit different. but i did not learn it from a GuitarPro file, i learned it in the early 1980s, all by ear! keep rocking!
i am not using any pedals ... also no harmony effect, i don´t know how you got that expression. the only effect that i used was the built in delay of the Hughes & Kettner Zenamp! keep rockin´ ....
@TommittajaFIN: lets say it that way ... the whole song is not so easy :))) but if you made it to play the solo ... you will also do the rest .. for sure! .. rockin greetz from Brazil!
I agree with you, and in the first place i am not here to discuss what music is good or bad but to teach interested people to play some in my opinion good music (because as i already said, music is a matter of taste) So if you guys here want to discuss, if i did it well or not, thats ok for me. anyways thanx for your comment!
i already played Villa Strangiato ... but almost 20 years ago :))) lets see, maybe one day i will try to remember how to play it! thanks for you nice comment
i have to correct myself, maybe not all Rush music is unemotional ... but listen to "Losing it" from the signals album!!!! for me that´s a very emotional tune!
i did not understand your comment, but i am always open for critics, so you can frankly tell me, what you don´t like about this lesson, so i can try to make it better next time. thanks anyway for ur comment!
@tondec33 , yes i know, it was one of my first videos and i was still using a photo cam! my more recent videos are better! thanx for the comment ... rockin greetz from Brazil
No, i am using my Hughes & Kettner (H&K) Zenamp with the built-in efx, a bit of reverb and a bit of delay! as a basic modeling sound i am using the H&K WARP! keep rockin ...
OK, if i just wanted to show off, i would have just played it without showing how to play the parts. But for me, "how to play" doesn´t mean to explain every single tone i play. whatever, this is your opinion and i won´t try to change it. Thanx for the comment anyways!
Thank you for taking my side Voodoo! i just think that guy doesn´t know anyhing about music! i already gave it up to discuss with those people! nobody who really has a clue about music will listen to them! thanx anyways!!
i learned this song in the 80s just by listening. i can´t really remember how long i took, but i bet it was around a week or 2! try to learn the song part by part! i know it is hard to play the entire song accurately! cut it in short parts and practice them seperately, then you will crack it soon!
@ejaydet: thank you ejay, good to know, that a 13 year old is interested in learning how to play RUSH! For you guys i made my tutorials ... you are welcome! ... keep rockin' man ... greetz from Brazil
almost. the legato part at 1:24 isn't correct though. You must have learned the song from the Guitar Pro file, because that's how it's tabbed in it (and its wrong). Nice and clean though... sounds very good otherwise
i don´t understand your problem man, why it is so bad that you hear a drums and a bass in the background (by the way, there is no rythm guitar!!!) it is a midi backing that i am playing with! just the guitar is me playing! it is so difficult to understand that!
rushyeskansas thank you, i just started trying to learn this one...i've been playing for many years but only now do i have enough confidence to tackle it. So did you play all the instruments in this video....sounds to me that you did. You're a very very good musician either way. Have a good one.
mike Braxus Mike, thank you again for the nice comments and your interest in my tutorial, I feel flattered ... and no, I did not play all the instruments in this video, I used a midi file, which I downloaded somewhere, to create this backing track ... have fun learning and I bet you will make it ... take care!
rushyeskansas thanks man. my biggest problem is not my left hand, but my right. i can pick a single note really fast, but not really with any control...i'm working on my minor scales, you know trying to pick every note as fast as i can but, wow, it's gonna take time to get that fluid synchronization. do you have any tips for fast picking?
Normally i do not respond to people that make "sensless" comments either . but i wanted to know, what you meant with your comment! if you would have given me that extended answer before, i wouldn´t have ask you to shut up! so i take this back .. sorry! i just don´t like people that make comments without any conection to the subject! i can handle critics and also constructive advices .. i just cannot handle stupid people! keep rocking!
in the first place, music is always a matter of taste, so nobody can criticize the taste of others! Rush is not emotional music, it is constructed music ...sometimes it is like maths! J.S.Bach, for me one of the most genius composers of all the times, did it as well. his music is made with the brain and not with the heart or the soul. by the way .. i am not a fanatic rush fan!!!
if you think so!!! i already played that song, when you were probably still shitting in you pants. come back and we´ll speak, when you are old enough to able to judge what is fake and what is not!
Folks! Let's grow up a little. A wise man once said" there are only two kinds of music: "good" and "bad". defined by the listener. Debating what is "good",is akin to debating what religion (or not) is good or right. Wouldn't we be better off with "live and let live" To say Rush' music is unemotional is an opinion. I respect your right to your opinion, I disagree. To me Rush's music is laden with a spirit of objectivism, truth, clarity, and precision' things they are passionate about. .
Nice tone and thanks for posting this...got me playying this tune again
Thanx, i am glad that you like it! even more i am glad that there still people outside in this world that enjoy good handmade rockmusic! keep rockin´
I Love this song!! awesome job, i wish i could play like that

É fantástico. Muito bem feito, e útil. Muito obrigado! A saudação de EUA.
Nice chops bro! Hope to see PT.2 soon!
man, it took me some years to reach the level to play that song accurately! so don´t give up! you will make it! keep rockin´
thanks man you really help me in some details that I dont do before playing by ear
srry for the english I am brazilian
Thanx Dan! Of course you could play the part @ 1:23 on the E-string! maybe thats the original way of Alex. But i play this song since more than 25 years that way, i fear i won´t be able to learn it different now :))) .. the age u know! keep rockin´
man ... these are also my three favorite bands, welcome to the club!!! :)))
hey, thanx for the comment! i learned it in the early 80s, all by ear! took me around 2 weeks to play the whole song accurately, included the solo. at this time i was already playing guitar for 3 years. so you are early with just 6 months experience!!! very brave! but i bet, you will make it ... keep rocking!
Great playing this song.

hey Jazzy, thanx for the comment! you won´t believe, but i did not use any tabs! when i learned that song (i think it was around 1986, there didn´t exist tabs and internet was quite on the beginning! i learned that song just by listening!
i hope you are speaking about Alex Lifeson! because was him that composed and played that wonderful solo! ... thanks for the comment!
Thanks for slowing it down. U're very helpful!
Thank you for posting this!!!
sorry, but i really don´t understand your question! what band is far away from progrock as possible?
If he were showing off, there'd be no slow parts to show what he's doing. This video will be great to learn the song for me. Thanks for posting rushyeskansas. By the way you have great sound and technique, keep it up bro.

Nice vid bro...thanx.
Thanx man, but i don´t understand, which harmonics you talking about! could u be a bit more precise!
This is absolutely not fake. There's a small lip sync delay but that's it. I think he played all the other parts as well cos the backing track isn't Rush. Anyway, if it is a fake, how much do you think Mr Lifeson charged to play it slowed down?
Thsnx a lot! you are very kind! concerning to Anthem, let us see. i thought more about to post the Tom Sawyer solo! ;)
hey Conny .. yeah i love RUSH as well. thanx for your "sweet" comment! :))) keep on rocking!
wow, thats awesome. i can get my left hand on the notes quick enough but i cant pick anywhere near as fast as you. and the bit at 1:16, i play on the 8th fret, 3rd string. also i dont have my 4th finger on the 9th fret when you do the bar chord bit at 1:43. i really wanna nail this song before i die. but dont worry, im 14 so i should have plenty of time.

you are very welcome, thanx for the comment!

hey how do u get that harmony effect? is it a pedal?
Also what type of tuning do you use?

@johneldrickscruz: man you should find your own way of picking! how it is best for you. i am mostly using alternate picking! ... thats all about it!
ur welcome Brotha!
I can keep up with the movement but cant pick as fast but I know the notes from just watching but cant play solos.

sorry man, but i don´t understand. this part is also on the video! check it again!

thanx man, just try it, i bet you can do that too!
what is fake? and what about the drums, it is a midi backing!
almost. the legato part at 1:24 isn't correct though.
You must have learned the song from the Guitar Pro file, because that's how it's tabbed in it (and its wrong).
Nice and clean though... sounds very good otherwise
A little bit too dark but it was a great sample anyway, thanks for sharing
so you don´t like Rush, or what was that comment for?
i don´t understand your problem man, why it is so bad that you hear a drums and a bass in the background (by the way, there is no rythm guitar!!!) it is a midi backing that i am playing with! just the guitar is me playing! it is so difficult to understand that!

Let's see that fairy on the Guitar Hero video do this!
@Sherm911 i agree but it would be better if he would SPEAK!!!
nice, job really great
how people can play guitar so effortlessly pisses me off, i can barely grasp the basics of the instrument xD
:))))
