This should have a million likes. There's something about him that almost made it real when watching him. Like his "re-run" roast to Arnold. Dawson was perfect for that role and made the movie!
Having Mick Fleetwood seemed perfectly fitting to me, not random. He was immediately recognizable, and when he explained his history in the movie it made it seem like a future based on reality, not just a fictional future. Another interesting fact: Dynamo (played by Erland van Lidth) did not originally sing opera. This was added because van Lidth was a trained opera singer. The song he sings is a solo from the 3rd Act of The Marriage of Figaro, where the Count swears revenge against Figaro because he feels tormented that Figaro will have Susanna, who isn't interested in the Count. In its overarching meaning of revenge, it fits the scene in Running Man very well.
The book (short story) is so much better. Don’t get me wrong, I liked the movie at the time. But, in later life having read the story, on my mums recommendation, it is much darker. Hey Minty! There's one more music connection in the movie. One of the other freedom fighters in the movie was Dweezil Zappa, the son of Frank Zappa. Thought you would like this extra tidbit.
In the film a can of soda was 6 bucks. It was supposed to be a price so high, that it was 100% unthinkable. In like 2009, I was at a newly opened Cowboys Stadium. There was a vending machine and the price if a 20oz? 6 bucks. Keep in mind that the fountain drink was 6 bucks so I guess the soda had to follow suit. I immediately thought of this film.
You left out three things. 1. Jesse Ventura, who played Captain Freedom, was in Predator also. 2. Another musician, Dweezil Zappa appeared in this movie as well. 3. Richard Dawson was a panelist on The Match Game, another game show.
My wife and I love your interesting facts and trivia on so many of our favorite movies. I hope you're having as much fun making these we have watching them!
Hi Minty, great vid as always. Just wanted to mention that one of the ways RM seemed to be the most eerily prescient was with it's brief look at the 'Climbing for Dollars' gameshow, as now in the UK on one of our ITV channels we have a gameshow with a somewhat similar premise called 'Release the Hounds'. When I first saw it, all I could think of was this movie! Does make you wonder what's going to be next, doesn't it?
You mentioned Mick Fleetwood but not Dweezil Zappa? For shame! By the way, the DVD extras contain a surprisingly good serious documentary about the erosion of privacy rights, comparing the world of the movie to the world at the time of the DVD's release. It's even more relevant today.
Sadly, "absolute zero" (0 degrees Kelvin, or -273 degrees Celsius) wasn't known outside of the scientific community until an experiment with solidified mercury as an electromagnetic superconductor for elevated trains was made public around 1985.
Hi Minty, I just found your channel and I am watching the "10 things" series. "The Running Man" is my favorite of Stephen King's Richard Bachman books, and yes there are a ton of differences. One could probably make a thirty minute video discussing them.
@kevin nelson One of Christopher Reeve's greatest movies was called Somewhere in Time. We watched it in school and I was amazed how much I liked the film. Also written by Richard Matheson who did I am Legend.
Who here has read it? Been over 20 years since I last read it. English version is best.. Naturally but the Icelandic translation was my first... oh baby baby! What.. a book! Too much for T V S.King's best work imho. About 906.054.648.485 times better than "the librarian" or something.. where the old lady turns into a vacuum cleaner.. worst. Ever. Hahaha I could probably write an essay 20% of the books length in a few hours from memory. The Running Man. Top 3 books ever imho. Anyone read it? It starts with chapter 100 and counts Down. How far? Give it a chance.. if it sux in your humble opinion... I'll pour eleven buckets of ice water over me in 44 seconds. And eat a hat after it. and probably cry from shock and have a fit.. for your entertainment.
Would love to see a remake of Night of the Comet. Yeah, the original is a great classic, but it has a lot of 80s cheesiness, too. I think they could do it justice and not screw it up completely.
Random fun fact, the Actor who played buzzsaw, as big and strong as he was, was not able to lift the 25-30 pound chainsaw over his head.. I guess someone skipped Shoulder day!
Mike Bushnell i know which he had on his back. Mind you Mac seemed to handle it alright in Predator and I swear they used that one in T2 too. Also the M16 with M203 he uses in Predator is the same one Tony Montana uses im Scarface
well i could be wrong but i thought it was the short story called "The long walk" where they were children who were volunteered to participate in a state sponsored television show were they walked from of course bangor main to Florida and they had to wear collars and if they didn't keep pace they would basically be executed be because the collars would go off..i actually read that short story by Richard Bachmann but i could be wrong it was sad and sadistic were the people cheered for their states representatives and at the end thry walked for so long their shoes gave out and were down to their bloody socks.. but i could be wrong
On "The Long Walk" you have it mostly correct. However, they appeared to be in their late teens & volunteered/were conscripted to do this walk. They didn't wear collars but had to maintain a walking pace of 4 MPH no matter what & were monitored; if they dropped below that pace they got a verbal warning - after 3 verbal warnings they were executed - if they managed to walk an hour after a warning without accumulating another warning, a warning would be forgiven. You are correct: it was indeed sad & sadistic. Incidentally, King wrote this story in the late '60's, several years before his first novel "Carrie" was published in 1974.
They were both part of the anthology "The Bachman Books". There was also a story in there called "Rage" which sort of foreshadowed school shootings by students.
@@alexisdiva9 ah thanks glad you read it too. It was a long time ago when I read that...I thought it sounded more like hunger games....but yeah thanks man👍
Sven Ole Thorsen has appeared in a number of Arnold's movies. The two of them knew each other from their competitive bodybuilding days and have been friends for a long time. Thorsen is actually one of Arnold's most frequent collaborator, serving in both acting and stunt man capacities in a number of his movies. Both he and Arnold also enjoy a good cigar.
@@ramonantoniobennett-ryuuke6301 I doubt very much that Mike Hagar is based on Don Frye or Dan Severn, considering the first Final Fight came out in 1989... Still, he could be based in part on Ventura... I'd go with that.
The Running Man is the best of all the Bachman Books. But Sadly few of those books have ever been adapted. Thinner which was a pretty close adaptation of a good book but came out to be a terrible movie. And this, which was not even remotely like the book. I would love to see an adaptation that was close to the book. If nothing else, just to see how they would handle the ending. If you read the book, you know what I mean. And an adaptation of the Long Walk. And Roadwork And Rage. Can't believe none of them have been adapted.
Crakatoot Our unending rash of school shootings will ensure Rage never sees the screen, but I would love to see The Long Walk (which has a real Hunger Games vibe to it) and of course a proper remake of Running Man with someone like Christian Bale in the lead. They would both probably be big hits right now among the dystopian wave The Handmaid's Tale is riding on.
I agree. I'm curious, did you ever notice how almost all of the Bachman books deal with the stories in a countdown sense. Rage the 4 hour countdown of Charlie's standoff with the cops. The Long Walk countdown of the kids dying off from the walk. Roadwork countdown to Barton Dawes having to move from his home by a certain point. Running Man countdown to the time Richards has to complete the game. Thinner countdown of Billy's weight loss. The Regulators countdown of Seth and Tek's completion of transforming the reality/world. Blaze I haven't read yet so I can't say. Just curious if anyone else ever noticed this.
I actually have noticed that. I've always been fascinated by the Bachman books There are a lot of parallels in the Bachman books. Except for the Regulators, which feels the most like a King Book. It was also the newest of the Bachman books. But with all the other ones there is a countdown. In Blaze, the police are chasing the main character and through out the story they also get closer and closer. Like a countdown. Also all 6 books focus on a single male protagonist. And there always sort of a amoral character like Dawes, Decker and Halleck or they are somebody forgotten by society, like Garrety, Blaze or Richards. And they all end horribly. I think the Bachman books are some of Kings best work. It's a shame we never got more.
Honestly, Rage is the worst Bachman book. And frankly I think that is a big part of why King wants to erase the book. But come on, it has a lot of cinematic potential.
What about the Tommyknockers, the Langoliers and Stpehen King's The Shining? Those are pretty good adaptations. Or were you talking specifically about Bachman books?
So, little known fact, in 1983 (so not that long before Running Man,) in France, a movie called "Le Prix du Danger", in english "The Prize of Peril", was made. And it is exactly the same premise as the Running Man and Stephen King's book. It starred Gerard Lanvin and Michel Piccoli, 2 major French stars of the early 80s, and it was both an action film and a social drama, much closer to Stephen King's book, the main character being a regular guy completely broke and trying to find money for his family. For the longest time, I thought Running Man was an American remake of the French movie, but I guess now that the French movie was heavily inspired from Stephen King's book. Maybe the French production owned the right of the book before the American studio? I'm going to have to look into that. It should be said that as fun and great as Running Man is, "The Prize of Peril" is a far superior movie IMO, especially for an action film made in 1983 in France. The social context really added depth to the story, and the 2 french actors where at there pic at the time.

There was a vending machine and the price if a 20oz? 6 bucks. Keep in mind that the fountain drink was 6 bucks so I guess the soda had to follow suit. I immediately thought of this film.
Life imitates art.
I'm from Dublin Ireland and I loved the Running Man when I was growing up and I still love it today in 2020.
You left out three things. 1. Jesse Ventura, who played Captain Freedom, was in Predator also. 2. Another musician, Dweezil Zappa appeared in this movie as well. 3. Richard Dawson was a panelist on The Match Game, another game show.
i aint got time to bleed!
4 things then, because Sven-Ole Thorsen was also in Predator (and many other of Arnold's movies)
I would enjoy a 10 about "Flight of the Navigator." Thank you for your consideration. I really enjoy your channel Minty.
Loved that movie and do you remember Explorers?
@@GeneralG1810 Minty did an episode on Explorers a few months back.
Yes, a Flight of The Navigator would be marvelous.
Hey Minty please consider doing a Starship Troopers Vid. U are doing a Great Job.
My wife and I love your interesting facts and trivia on so many of our favorite movies. I hope you're having as much fun making these we have watching them!
"I'm gonna puke" "Go ahead, it won't show on this shirt"
I had the Amiga version of the game, it came with the original novel in the box as well.
Also compare Running man to the German movie "Das Millionenspiel" made in 1970. You will find a lot of similarities.
yes, this happened well before Hunger Games. Sigh.
Steven King, Arnie, Paula Abdul, Starski - Fleetwood Mac, can't get more 80's than that!!
Dweezil Zappa
This was an amazing movie and probably the closest you could get to a John Carpenter movie without being directed by John Carpenter himself.
I love the Running Man. One of my all time faves. Cheers Minty 👍🏻
You mentioned Mick Fleetwood but not Dweezil Zappa? For shame!
By the way, the DVD extras contain a surprisingly good serious documentary about the erosion of privacy rights, comparing the world of the movie to the world at the time of the DVD's release. It's even more relevant today.
He should have said "Now, Absolute Zero!" Much better.
Sadly, "absolute zero" (0 degrees Kelvin, or -273 degrees Celsius) wasn't known outside of the scientific community until an experiment with solidified mercury as an electromagnetic superconductor for elevated trains was made public around 1985.
Jesus...
LOL, I loved dude's rant about us Americans knowing about Richard Dawson!
Trivia fact - American actor Richard Dawson, the compare in the film was born Colin Lionel Emm in Gosport, Hampshire, England, on 20 November 1932
Save me from mentioning it lol not far from me in Basingstoke Hampshire 👌
And he played NewKirk in Hogan's Heroes.
This is the pinnacle of all Arnoldness. It has it all, including Dweezil Zappa, Harold Faltermeyer, and Richard Dawson!
Mick Fleetwood?!?! LoL
Can we get a 10 things we didn’t know about the remake of night of the living dead 1990? Tom savini directed it, and tony Todd is awesome in it
Yes, Minty, please make this happen!! 😀😃
Hi Minty, I just found your channel and I am watching the "10 things" series. "The Running Man" is my favorite of Stephen King's Richard Bachman books, and yes there are a ton of differences. One could probably make a thirty minute video discussing them.
Love this move... The Running Man. Some of the best of the 80s.
Hint- wear glasses that fit - Elton John called-- he wants his glasses back
I can't believe he didn't mention Jesse Ventura...
pantslizard It’s well known that Jesse was in both Predator and Running Man.
I also didn't mention Dweezil Zappa.
Nor Jim Brown.
I was about to comment something similar to that. Jesse later became governor of Minnesota, and Arnold then became governor of California.
It is things you didn't know, not things that everyone knows.
Dawson was also on "Hogan's heroes".
Newkirk
"I served in a fictitious military,"
He was actually from the UK
I know Nothing Nothing
Richard Dawson was a notorious skirt chaser...along with the guy who played Hogan on Hogan's Heroes.
Dude, Superman as “The Running Man”, I can dig that, it’d be badass!
@kevin nelson One of Christopher Reeve's greatest movies was called Somewhere in Time. We watched it in school and I was amazed how much I liked the film. Also written by Richard Matheson who did I am Legend.
I love your nostalgia collection in the background LOL it seems like you change it from time to time I always check it out, great channel mate!
Maria conchita alonso was so freakin hot in that one piece 😘
I always loved seeing her in 80s movies!
@Richard_Head Pics or GTFO.
I remember having a crush on one of the dancers on the TV game show. 😂
This is one that could be remade to good effect. Darker, grittier, truer to the novel. A bit more blade runneresque perhaps.
A proper adaptation of the book would be awesome. Not sure the ending would exactly play well though in the US
No no no, the current SJW Hollywood would destroy the whole concept. Give it another 5 years so the current crappie crop has gone. Then, maybe.
I love the 80s Ahnuld cheese but the original sounds worth of a new adaptation.
Who here has read it?
Been over 20 years since I last read it.
English version is best..
Naturally but the Icelandic translation was my first... oh baby baby! What.. a book!
Too much for T V
S.King's best work imho.
About 906.054.648.485 times better than "the librarian" or something.. where the old lady turns into a vacuum cleaner.. worst.
Ever.
Hahaha
I could probably write an essay 20% of the books length in a few hours from memory.
@@xmikerx666 don't spoil
Oh dear god!!! I cant believe he made superman 4 over running man.
Reeves made a ton of money in Superman 4
One of my favorite movies as a teenager. Great job Minty!
I guess Mick finally realized "Players only love you when they're playing". LOL =)
Love Running Man, thx Minty! Is there any chance of you doing "Night Of The Comet?"
Would love to see a remake of Night of the Comet. Yeah, the original is a great classic, but it has a lot of 80s cheesiness, too. I think they could do it justice and not screw it up completely.
Please do Night of the Comet...great 80s movie that's underrated
Random fun fact, the Actor who played buzzsaw, as big and strong as he was, was not able to lift the 25-30 pound chainsaw over his head.. I guess someone skipped Shoulder day!
Aaron Greenfield Or injuries. Shoulders wear out about as badly as knees over time.
And in T2 Arnold was the only member of cast and crew who could pick the MG134 Minigun up.
Mike Bushnell must of all been pussies, unless that's without a full pack of bullets, which would make it pretty heavy
Mike Bushnell i know which he had on his back. Mind you Mac seemed to handle it alright in Predator and I swear they used that one in T2 too. Also the M16 with M203 he uses in Predator is the same one Tony Montana uses im Scarface
Mike Bushnell show wrestling is scripted...
well i could be wrong but i thought it was the short story called "The long walk" where they were children who were volunteered to participate in a state sponsored television show were they walked from of course bangor main to Florida and they had to wear collars and if they didn't keep pace they would basically be executed be because the collars would go off..i actually read that short story by Richard Bachmann but i could be wrong it was sad and sadistic were the people cheered for their states representatives and at the end thry walked for so long their shoes gave out and were down to their bloody socks.. but i could be wrong
HOLY CRAP!!!! I thought I was the only person who remembered that book! I thought the same thing!
Surprised they haven't made a movie of The Long Walk, great story. BUT The Running Man was a totally different Bachman/King story.
@@alexisdiva9 ah thanks glad you read it too. It was a long time ago when I read that...I thought it sounded more like hunger games....but yeah thanks man👍
The bad guy body guard was also Throrgram in Conan The Barbarian with Arnold.
He was also in the Schwarzenegger movie "Raw Deal" in which he played a mafia henchman.
MINTY ,I really appreciate this channel, it gets me through tough work days as I listen to it. Good job sir and Thanks
No mentioning of the great Harold Faltermeyer music? :(
But anyways ... great video :)
Totally epic!
Harold Faltermeyer- underrated Movie Composer - the hook of Beverly Hills Cop alone - also, Billy Idols' Keyboard Player in the 80s
Faltermeyer? He also made the music to The Secret Of My Success.
Ventura always reminded me as a live-action Ike Hagger in this movie.
he looks so funny in this film XDDDD
You mean Mike Haggard as yeah, Haggard is based on Venture, MMA fighters Don Frye and Dan Severn.
Coincidentally, Don Frye started as Haggard in a fan made Final Fight film, BROKEN GEAR. You can what it on RUclips.
@@ramonantoniobennett-ryuuke6301 I doubt very much that Mike Hagar is based on Don Frye or Dan Severn, considering the first Final Fight came out in 1989...
Still, he could be based in part on Ventura... I'd go with that.
If they re-release this movie with more of the book shown, it would be great!
There also was a trial because this film is a remake of french movie "Le prix du danger", although coming from different novel books.
One of my favourite movies of all time. What a hothead... He had to split... Hey lightbulb.... Some of the best Arnie one liners EVER.
Richard Dawson was know for playing a English POW in the sitcom “Hogan’s Heroes” which itself was a rip-off of the film “Stalag 17”.
Liked him on Match Game. That show is everything that made the ‘70’s the ‘70’s.
And Roadwork
And Rage.
Can't believe none of them have been adapted.
Crakatoot
Our unending rash of school shootings will ensure Rage never sees the screen, but I would love to see The Long Walk (which has a real Hunger Games vibe to it) and of course a proper remake of Running Man with someone like Christian Bale in the lead.
Precisely mate ! Expected the author of this video to talk about this great French movie :)
At the beginning, The Prize of Peril is a 1958 short story from Robert Sheckley.
Going through your back catalog, it's crazy to see how much you covered dude! You're a beast!
Originally Chuck Woolery was considered for the role of Damon Killian but turned it down due to him hosting Love Connection and Scrabble
Ha! My favourite surfer movie North Shore was also from 1987.
"Here on the North Shore we treat friends more betta"
"No one listens to Turtle.
Forget about it Barney, bag it.
“I’ve seen bigger waves in my toilet!”
“He’s so Barney, he don’t know he’s Barney”
That cool 1980's video game font. So nostalgic.,
Minty I want you to know I Enjoy your Video's Very Much 😀
The ending of this episode was complete with the subzero quote, great episode looking forward to more from America
AWESOME!!! loved this movie growing up, hilarious one liners. "I don't do requests" and "Cause Im going to say PLEASE" and "go ahead, won't show on this shirt" "see you at the ten year prison reunion"
I’d love to see a breakdown of No Retreat No Surrender. One of my favorites from the 80s
🤘
Fun fact: there really is a game show called 'The Running Man' in China.
do ppl die?
Ha ha I lived in China and had to look it up. It had nothing to do with the 80's movie. When I was living there in early 2000 we would go to certain shops and buy cheap DVDs. I still have a copy from my time in Thailand or while living in China.
Who loves you? and who do you love?
eleven38 pot and beer?
eleven38 Temple of Dreams samples that, I liked that song back in the day
indeed!! i remember that rave tune from like 91
The Messiah! Did I dream, you dreamed about me? It's time to start running!
The Messiah - Temple Of Dreams.
Minty your Arnold impersonation has me rolling! 🤣🤣🤣 Very nice!
But seriously, that cameo is awesome. =)
