    Lutetia play time: 2h:41m (Hard Difficulty)
    Full playlist: • The Original Caesar II...
    I've decided to finish games I never managed to from my childhood! Starting with Caesar III, a 1998 city-building game developed by Impressions Games and published by Sierra Entertainment, that has incredibly tough later levels.
    All missions will be cut shorter; I'm not trying to upload as many videos as I can.

      Oh I remember watching this 6 years ago. I couldn't understand 50% of the words he was saying (not a native english speaker) but still learned a lot, for example 9*9 blocks. I was also envious of how good he was playing as I wasn't able to get past mission 7. So I was looking for moments where the enemy invasion messes him up cause it made me feel not so bad about myself. It feels so cool to rediscover the channel and the series after so long. I still have the disc with this game and maybe it's time to complete it finally somewhere during the summer. We'll see. Anyway, it's awesome that the game is not forgotten after 20+ years and GamerZakh and other people still work on improving it.

    More than just a caricature of modern Paris, Lutetia was the Roman name for Paris. Check out Asterix's journey around Gaul. Burdigala -> Bordeaux, Lugdunum -> Lyon, Massilia -> Marseilles. Actually, lots of European cities had Roman names: Caesaraugusta -> Zaragossa, Toletum -> Toledo etc. etc.

  • @Zamolxes77
    @Zamolxes77 9 лет назад +5

    Several observations.
    1. You should sink your extra plebs in towers not academies. Build extensive fortification with towers every 2 tiles. Each tower takes 10 plebs, if memory serves and there are a lot more useful than extra academies.
    Battle at 41:00 fully illustrates my point.
    2. Is a good idea to create raw material warehouses, for every resource, at point of extraction. That way you can observe at a glance if you produce enough raw materials to feed your industries.
    3. Each pair of housing block should have 3 dedicated warehouses, for oil, pottery and furniture and 2 granaries.Makes it very easy to observe the shortages and deal with them accordingly.
    4. Its a good idea to set up a small palace section. The income from the palaces will supplement your treasury quite nicely and if developed enough can even surpass your trade income which is rather fixed. Also is a very good way to put the extra plebs to work, instead of building academies. As a bonus, your city would look even nicer, since they require many desirability buildings.

    • @countingtls
      @countingtls 9 лет назад

      Zamolxes77 You don't need raw material warehouses, it actually creates bottleneck due to one warehouse only has one cart pusher, it would be less efficient than strait from raw materials to workshops. And the ratio between raw and workshops is very simple so you don't need to worry about excessive production.

    • @Zamolxes77
      @Zamolxes77 9 лет назад

      ***** It doesn't in my experience, it creates a visual check of your production. I take a snap of the levels in my warehouses and know if I have to build more or not. Easy.
      Also if I'm not mistaken, warehouses have 3 cart pushers not one ...

    • @countingtls
      @countingtls 9 лет назад

      Zamolxes77
      Well, more precisely whether a "bottleneck" situation occured depends on how far away this "raw material warehouse" is located toward raw material buildings, and it's location toward the workshops.
      If you have a surplus of raw materials, and the raw warehouse is further than the round trip distance (33 walking title), than raw material buildings will have some idle time, waiting for the cart to go back (when all workshops is stocked, and raw cart pushers have to go to warehouse instead). And if the one cart pusher from the raw warehouse can't serve the workershop in time, the workshop might not even be able to keep 100% working time as well (thus you bottleneck yourself with less than 100% efficiency raw material production and probably workshop efficiency as well)
      Generally speaking, since the production ratio is the exact 1:2, for every raw material building it can serve 2 workshops (as long as they are all within round trip distance, 33 tiles from raw to workshop, and 66 tiles from workshop to storage), you don't need any intermedia warehouse to store the raw material anyway. It's just a waste of storage space, or waste of building space and manpower (especially when you have excessive raw materials, just delete the extra raw materials and save some workers, instead of building an extra warehouse and waste more workers). And you could easily check how many workshops, raw materials of each type in trade advisor screen, you don't have to count them by hand. (granted a visual clue is neat, but if you are relying on visual clue to balance production, you clearly is doing the production ratio wrong)
      BTW, a warehouse have many kinds of cart pushers, and what you define cart pusher belongs to. Three carts can transport export/import goods between a warehouse and a dock (usually these cart pushers are considered as dock cart pushers, not warehouses' since they spawn at the dock), but a warehouse only send out one cart when transporting goods toward workshops. And it's mutually exclude with long distance cross country cart that transport goods betwen warehouses (which is also only one at a time)

    • @eduardoazeredo6250
      @eduardoazeredo6250 5 лет назад

      @@Zamolxes77 The ratio of raw materials is 1 unit for every 2 factories. So, it's always 2 olive oil factories to every olive farm and so on. There's no need of much checking for this.
      And the only place with three carts are the docks. Warehouses and granaries have only one cart.

    I never really needed to build hospitals. Well I did put some hospitals when I want to turn housing into palaces and villas, but normal residences don't require it. Doctors are enough. Gates prevent walkers from going through them, so the market lady, prefect, and all other service people always walk around the housing block fully each time. No chance they can turn down another path. Walkers with destinations, like the market lady going to a granary, can pass though.

  • @andrevolker
    @andrevolker 10 месяцев назад

    Played C3 a lot when it was new back in the 90s, and started playing it again in recent months; it's still one of my all-time favourite games. Lutetia is one of the most fun maps because resources are almost limitless, enabling you to build as many luxury palaces as you can fit on the map and thus turning this city into a money pit.
    Btw thanks for sharing info, I never knew warehouses can get goods without road connection- not necessary on this map but on other maps it really did help me out!

  • @GamerZakh
    @GamerZakh  11 лет назад +1

    It blocks random walkers, so a market lady distributing food will walk full circle every time. But it allows walkers with a destination, so market lady going to get food is allowed through. Gates are essential for city stability.

  • @GamerZakh
    @GamerZakh  12 лет назад +1

    Thanks for the explanation! Your knowledge of the game's mechanics still is amazing.

  • @GamerZakh
    @GamerZakh  11 лет назад +1

    Gatehouses block walkers from going through. This ensures that services like market ladies, engineer's, prefects, bath, etc. all go around the housing block every time they spawn. Gates don't block walkers with destinations through, so market ladies can still go to a granary/warehouse no probs.

    +GamerZakh Another excellent video - I really do enjoy watching your series especially your Caesar III series is my all time favorite in city building. Very beautiful and efficient designs!
    P.S.: To make immigrants move in faster/flood into the city there are two ways : a) Raise wages (always works) b) Cut or even Eliminate Taxes altogether (if you don't tax them which is a waste, it produces quite a fair amount equivalent to the total export on maps like these). Also, you could ramp up food production as that food prompt at the total information bar or food storage tab will tell you.

    You don't have to build academies to handle unemployment problem.. Just raise salary by 2-3 denaries so people will still love you and no crime happens. And you don't need prefectures in this mission (and some other). There is no risk of fire ever. Check it out

    • @GamerZakh
      @GamerZakh  8 лет назад

      +h0Nt667 - Yeah but I like controlling employment and it helps raise culture. I also build prefectures to deal with gladiator riots, protestors, and if during an invasion troops get through the prefects help out, so I build prefectures on every mission regardless.

    • @h0Nt667
      @h0Nt667 8 лет назад +1

      +GamerZakh I'm just building the easiest way so I don't have actor colonies etc. They are only needed for palaces to level up. By the way I had 16 luxury palaces this mission (2 stacks of what you were doing in the last episode). That's 100 prosperity. But only 13 of them were stable due to the lack of farmlands (couldn't feed them without shrinking the population below 10k). I maxed taxes from 7% to 25% and also salary from 30 to 40 to stabilize mood. So I had 90k of taxes a year comparing to export of 10k.

    • @mirrorflame1988

    40:38 Terrible strategy! The bottleneck was a great idea but you should've waited for the Gauls to come to your legionaires rather than send your soldiers out into the open. Legions in formation are stronger and less vulnerable in comparison to when they're moving. And the javelins standing behind them keep striking the oncoming enemy. You just made your 300 sacrifice themselves to the Persians :) Also, I feel it's easier to please the gods when you have a few festivals in their honor.

    • @GamerZakh

      The 2 wines thing is a bit silly with how it works. You can have one type produced locally and then the second you set the wine resource to 'import' it immediately makes all your wine count as '2 types'. You can also just open trade routes to 2 different places that sell wine and the moment you set wine to 'import' all wine counts as 2 types.

      Im not sure i understand but if you upgrade to villas, that population leaves the workforce, leaving you short of workers. Watch what you are doing in your villa development.

    So it looks like you can decrease the overall unemployment just from having a few houses near multiple industries. I always thought the houses an employer walks by are the only ones hired. Well that explains my childhood of failure trying to make everything connected to the center population.

    How do you have so much population? I have 9 residential areas, 8 of them between small, medium and mostly big insulae and I still only have 6.4k / 10k and I cant make them anywhere further away because I will go to far away from the food supply...

      Well, I did it :=) I managed that missions as well now. Though I used 13 Full residential areas (and a slightly squished one) on average on small insulae level (had some small casas in there cause of the mass)

    I referred to it as "caricature" because the authors put in references to modern times to make fun of those.
