BMW Product Manager Gareth Foley goes over the DIY install process of installing new Bilstein 4600 Shock/Struts & H&R Springs. This upgrade is proven to improve vehicle handling and dampening capabilities over stock shocks/struts and is relatively easy to do.
Remember to always get your vehicle aligned after doing suspension work; your car will sit differently after installing new shocks/springs.

Yer. Did my front struts exactly how you showed and had terrible creaking sound coming from the bearings.....
**DO NOT PUT THAT WASHER BLACK SIDE DOWN***
AGHH.
Got to remove the struts again and fit the washers the correct way now. Black side UP.
Would have loved to see how it looked kind of obvious for x3 owners we'd like to see what the upgrade looks like. Shoot us an update on this FCPEuro, make it due.
9:08 THE STRUT MOUNT WASHER MUST BE PLACED CORRECTLY. THE BLACK RING SIDE GOES UPWARDS. TOWARDS THE STRUT NUT AND MOUNT NUTS. NOT DOWNWARD LIKE THE VIDEO SAYS. IF YOU INSTALLED THEM LIKE THE VIDEO SAYS AND ARE EXPERIENCING ISSUES DM ME.
You don't know how much I wished I read this comment before installing 🙄😬
Would have loved to see video showing the stance after install
Wouldn't we all have!
That comes at the right time for me on the right car. Excellent video!
I have a thin 15mm/16mm combination wrench that I use pretty much only for stabilizer links. It's actually a bicycle mechanic tool, but it works great.
You say the black ring washer should face down? I did that on one strut and new the strut mount is VERY stiff after releasing the spring compression. Doesn't want to rotate. I backed off the main strut nut some and it loosened slightly, but feels like the bearings are locked up/grinding. Pulled the other side off and made sure to watch the washer orientation. The black ring was facing UP, towards the upper mount. This seems more appropriate to allow the upper mount to rotate on the smaller convex side of the black ring washer. The black rings were on the convex side of the washers I have.
Russell Filtz I think this is a very important oversight and needs to beaddressed/corrected
Correct!!! The black ring need to put face up toward the upper mount!!! Looking this video I made the same error. After investigation I disassembled the shock again to solve the error.
Thank you for this information about the ereor in the video. Called fcp and they told me it was for sure an incorrect step in the video. Had horrible popping and rubber squeezing sounds. Flipped the washer and I'm back to an amazing stiff and smooth ride. Thank you!!!
11:45 is hilarious.. thanks for great tech vid
BMW should be embarrassed of the process they created to get to the top of the rear shock...they could have easily made a door or panel to avoid the need to remove 15 pcs to access the shock. Great video, after all that you should have shown resulting ride height though.
this exactly
Props to them for making it though...I used this vid to install my BC coil overs yesterday...bud helped explain/clarify a few of the key points
@@nathanielmoore5677 for your X3? How do you like them? Do they ride any better or worse? How does the front end feel? My friends E90 on BC racing the car felt like it didn’t have enough front spring rate on the BC’s
I only had them for about 300 miles then I sold the x3. My impression in that short time was that I loved them and would buy again…but I’ve found that everyone has their own taste and preference when it comes to suspension so I can only give my opinion
Great video however I am looking to really SOFTEN the ride of me e83 X3 3.0i. It's an '05 and the ride really jolts my brain riding over anything :(
Agree. When I had a headache in the office then driving home didn't make it better. The headache got noticeably worse :(
Try Koni’s FSD (or Special Active, as they call them now).
How are the Koni's compared to those Bilsteins 4600? I prefer a firm suspension.
Great videos.. would love to see similar videos on an Audi B8 (S4) series car.
You didnt even show the end result how it looks like lowered. Why????
Sport, hard suspension for a smooth ride?
wow my strut replacment went nothing like this on a 09 328 i bmw , no way can you install the spring without compressing it first and there is no way to fully grab and compress spring with conventional spring compreser so i compressed spring tied it compressed with some good strong wire and released spring compreser and installed spring then cut the wire releasing spring and good to go , go figure
Hi l also have a 09 328i what would you recomend for a smoother ride?
I'm wondering, when assembling the strut, should the top nut be screwed down until the thread ends? How far should down should it go?
Am I mistaking that the B6 is for the stock spring, or the H&R is a hardened version of the Stock height spring?
So how would I raise the suspension for more off road clearance ? not interested in lowering
I never ever buy Bilstein shock. Bought two for rear on cost 350 pound and they Bumpy noise from new. Crazy
How to get the sport springs looking for part online not getting it
Does it ride smoother than oem ?
Hello Bryan, it rode smooth but a lot more firm compared to stock. The Bilstein Tourings will give you a factory ride.
Buying the Bilstein's 4600 shock absorbers but doesn’t come with spring how do I get the springs for it.
Great walk through. Changing suspension isn't hard. But I would have probably been there to this day without knowing how to get through the rear trim panels, or be stood left holding a handful of broken plastic. Why don't BMW put a hatch in the side panel like everyone else? BWM seem to want to make the simplest jobs so painful. Stealership economics I suppose.
HELP! I have 2013 X3 - I cannot for the life of me get the pinch bolt out at the knuckle. Are they threaded in? He punched the bolt out in this video so I’m assuming not but they’re threaded bolts??? Why are they threaded bolts if not screwed in? Help please!
Hi Matt, you may want to use some penetrating fluid to help get that bolt out. The knuckle itself is not threaded; it is just a nut and bolt setup similar to the E83 in this video. With the nut off, you should be able to tap the bolt through the other side with a hammer.
BMW Strut Kit (E83) - E83STRUTKIT2
X3
with this kit we would not need the coil spring compression tool for the install like you normally will with the other kit?
If you are using factory springs you will 100% need spring compressors. We did not need them in this video because we installed lowering springs which are significantly shorter.
What's the number on the spreader tool
For a 20"in wheelset setup, which is more ideal for the most compliant ride:
Bilstein/ HR combo
or
KW V2 coilovers?
The ride quality of both will be similar but the Bilstein / H&R combo will be much more cost effective.
Will using shorter springs mess the tires, even after alignment? I have read that sometimes its very hard to adjust the camber properly.
With a proper alignment you should have no worries about premature tire ware of anysort.
For the rear is a bit of a nightmare
What's the number on the spreader tool?
Here's the link to the knuckle spreader tool: www.fcpeuro.com/products/steering-knuckle-spreader-cta-4008
Awesome! Anyone know the cost of parts and the number of hours for labor? -- My e83 2010, low kms, drives VERY HARD. Would the Bilstein 4600's make it drive smoother? Will the smoother drive compromise how it sits on the road and in curves? In any case a smoother ride is preferred over how it corners. Thanks in advance.
... and when you quote 'dollars' please tell me which country's type of dollars. Thanks
mine is the x3 3.0i
Bmw w the absolutely dumbest and unessacary allot of the shit the put on there over priced junkcars. Cheap plastic interior cars suck really i do luke there hardware star and allen bolts nice clips on wires. Doesn't make up for poor designs else where.
