Hi Susan, I teach 1st grade in Arizona and we do not teach subtraction with regrouping. We use i-Ready math curriculum and it is not included in the unit. Our extra unit is actually teaching money as an introduction that isn’t expected to be mastered until next year.

how do you organize your math materials? Our math program is by topic. I keep most of it digital, but feeling like I have math materials, all over the classroom!

I teach in Texas and this is not part of our TEKS for first grade. We do not have to do any regrouping. We do addition and subtraction within 20

What Math curriculum your school uses? We use Go Math and the version we have is ridiculously overwhelming for the students to understand and for me to teach. For example one of the chapters about Addition Strategies it was including making tens and adding some more, as well as braking apart and making tens to add. Confusing for me to teach-yes, confusing for them to grasp?-%100 YES!

In Quebec, Grade One does not do regrouping, it is done in Grade Two.

I will teach subtraction regrouping at the end of the year, if there’s time. It basically comes down to how quickly students master the other math skills, so some years I don’t get to it.

Heck no! We do not teach subtraction with regrouping in first. I agree with you; they are not developmentally ready for it. However, I love the popsicle sticks idea, and you have inspired me to try this with my high kiddos.

I love your videos! I have benefited so much from them! We use a Abeka math, and we do not even get into addition with regrouping. I’m teaching my kiddos that, but it’s not something the curriculum has us do. The curriculum is too busy having us do speed drills. 🤦🏻‍♀ By the way, I am a member of your clubs. Are those math slides in there by any chance?

'Pupil' refers to young learners under the age of 18 attending school.
'Student' refers to adult learners in universities, colleges, art classes, etc above the age of 18.
