  • Sally Ride was the first American woman in space. She was a mission specialist on the seventh space shuttle mission and operated the shuttle’s robotic arm. Ride was known for her friendly and relaxed personality, but also her intense focus. She felt responsible for paving the way for women in space. Ride’s performance and skill, alongside her four male colleagues, made her a symbol of equality.

I met her as a kid. She was super friendly to me. Besides Hadfield she is the other astronaut that to me wasn't selfish and openly shared and engaged people.

She died in 2012 of pancreatic cancer but she achieved great things (whatever you may think about her as I read a couple of negative comments below). Here's to you Sally for your achievements. I neve want to go out into outer space, I don't even like boats and the sea / lakes, she had courage that's for sure.

My daughter got a quarter with her on the back of it. We immediately came to this video to learn about Sally. What an inspiration to all females.

Things I wanna see take place before I get old and end up dead.
1.) see a woman walk on the moon.
2.) see a woman be the first to set foot on planet mars.
3.) see a woman become the president of the United States 🇺🇸.

It would be great if you would mention her orientation, to inspire not only girls but also LGBT kids. I feel this video erases that part of her identity.

@Mcknuckels Maybe that's why Nasa chose her of all the women. So they wouldn't do anything funky in space.

Your sexual preferences are nobody's buisness but between you and your partner behind closed doors.
Gay straight or whatever else. I don't want to hear about what you find is hot. You keep it to yourself.

With all due respects, there is something I don’t quite understand about the whole Pride movement. There is absolutely nothing wrong with being gay, or bisexual, or whatever one’s orientation. However, to most people sexuality is a private matter and, while nothing to be ashamed of, a *human being* is just so much more on so many dimensions than a walking set of genitalia with a tag attached describing how they get used. When was the last time you heard, “What an awesome straight guy (or woman) he/she is/was?” Allow me to also say that if someone *wants* to advertise his/her sexuality, that is also fine with me, as I understand it can be very unhealthy to sweep it under the carpet (much less hide it in the proverbial closet). I can also understand the desire to advertise one’s orientation in order to lessen the confusion and fears of young people experiencing the same sorts of feelings. However, even Sally herself was very private about that aspect of her life, right up to the very end. She could have made a big deal of it because she was so famous, but she chose not to - and I think that was out of who she was as a person rather than out of either shame, or some abstract fear of losing her job 2:35 and/or status. For that very reason, I think not making a big deal of it is the best way we can honour her memory, specifically. I honestly don’t quite get it. 🤷‍♂️
