I started smoking at 16 in 1971 and I never disliked it. I loved it for 38 years. When I moved to New York City, I'd Iaunch myself every day from my Brooklyn stoop with a cup of fresh brewed Italian Roast and a Pall Mall...oh, my god! Then I got a show, a one-man show that ran one hour and forty five minutes with non-stop, heavy, verse dialogue and constant motion, often very athletic motion. I couldn't make it through the first run-through. I actually thought I was having a stroke or heart attack. I just couldn't fucking breathe. The director and I got into a huddle. Usually these huddles involved lots of talk about rehearsal and smoking like chimneys. We both smoked. Anyway, I decided something had to happen, so I went on the gum. I chewed that fucking gum like a madman for three full weeks. I went through four full packs of the stuff, thinking, when the show was over I'd resume smoking. I managed to not-smoke for the rest of the rehearsals and the performances, which took place in the Village during the 2009 New York Fringe Festival. The show was so complex I didn't even think about smoking. By the time the show ended I had stopped chewing the gum, and I didn't even think about smoking, which was odd in retrospect. The way I see it, I had a clear choice, either smoke or do the show. I did the show. Remission. Six months later I ran across three packs of Pall Malls, a pack of Marlboro Reds, a pack of filter-less Camels in a lower desk drawer. For one long moment, I thought, yeah, okay, I'll just....at which point, I grabbed the cigs, crushed them and threw them away. They were all dried out anyway. October 2009. Haven't smoked a cig since.
Did you smoke pall mall reds? Everytime I go into a shop I have to stop myself from getting a box of Pall mall reds, worst time is on break at work, miss a nice hot coffee and cigarette during my break out in the cold
@@SuspiciousMoon007 I loved the cigarettes that were mostly unadulterated. I often rolled them myself, but to tell you true I was never very good at rolling a cig, ha.

I have a history of depression and pretty bad anxiety for as long as I could remember. Although smoking didn't get rid of my depression or anxiety it greatly masked the symptoms and allowed me to be productive throughout the day as I was constantly in a daze and wouldn't think as much about the things that kept me up at night. I realize how crazy that sounds and to a normal person it wouldn't make much sense but cigarettes did help. Granted the inevitable fact that they would kill me one day wasn't forgotten. Haven't smoked in almost 6 months. Not really sure how to feel about it as my mind is always going and the thoughts don't stop. It's just constant. I've seen some amazing physical improvements but mentally it's been a slow process.
I quit smoking 4 years ago, hardest thing I've ever done. The thing to me is that smoking my cig was my little moment of absolute focus and silence, I'm not one of those people that likes to chat with other smokers. I still smoke a cigarrete after a few sips of wine from time to time at night sitting in my apartments balcony, damn I just love to do this.
Its because he's an opiate addict. Me and many others would have the exact same facial expressions, red eyes, pupil constriction when taking opiates. Also he has a history with opiates and his own brother died from heroin overdose
Smoking is therapeutic, it isnt just an addiction. It becomes a big part of who you are. When you quit smoking, you feel like you've just lost a part of yourself. You don't feel like yourself anymore. Smoking is harmful, but man is it lovely.
@CraigDontGotIt I like you bro, fully agree. I'm a heavy smoker and not only do I absolutely love it, I find it intoxicatingly attractive in others. It can give you a dominant advantage and it feels so good. The long, drawn out drags, the deep inhale... Filling those lungs loudly. Thick, opaque exhales despite holding that creamy goodness in your chest. Yum! I never try to resist the pull of the ciggy, because the ciggy will kick my ass and will smoke me instead. And boy does it make me succumb. The second that nicotine fix absorbs into me I get physically excited and a primal, insatiable hunger takes over. When smoke wants in my lungs, I'm helpless to stop it. So I just take control of the experience and let it seduce me. It's sexy, charasmstic, masculine and can even be an extremely intimate experience, be it solo or with a partner. It's a lifestyle man!! Stay lit and proud 😉 Basically, smoking 🚬 is not a problem at all. It's *only* a problem when you run out of cigs haha 🤣

I started drinking alcohol years ago as a teenage, spent my whole life fighting alcohol addiction. I suffered severe depression and mental disorder. Got diagnosed with cptsd. Not until my mom recommended me to psilocybin mushrooms treatment. Psilocybin treatment saved my life honestly. 6 years totally clean. Never thought I would be saying this about mushrooms.
I love hearing great life changing stories like this. I want to become a mycologist because honestly mushrooms are the best form of medicine (most especially the psychedelic ones) There are so many people today used magic mushrooms to ween off of SSRI medication- its amazing! Years back i wrote an entire essay about psychedelics. they saved you from death buddy, lets be honest here.
Hey mates! Can you help with the source? I suffer severe anxiety, panic and depression and I usually take prescription medicine, but they don't always help. Where can I find those psilocybin mushrooms? I'm really interested in treating my mental health without Rxs. I live in Australia don't know much about these. I'm so glad they helped you. I can't wait to get them too. Really need a reliable source 🙏
Thanks for sharing your story. That's rough I sympathize. Save your health save your mind. Life is better without heroin, cocaine, alcohol and cigarettes. And you have more money in your pocket. God bless everyone who has rejected the devils intentions to be addicted to alcohol and cigarettes etc which can cause so much damage to health. I will pray for you all.

For me it was around 6-12 months to not think about it constantly anymore. Smoked for 15 years. I guess it never really goes away, just last week I had a dream I was smoking, but it's very rare now, not tough and quickly goes away. Smoke free for 7 years
A really interesting quote by JP I found on IMDB quotes: "It's been a year since last time I tried to give up smoking. I went to a hypnotist; we sat down and started talking. A couple of hours later, I woke up; the hypnotist wasn't in the room, but his wife was. I was like "Oh my goodness, I fell asleep and didn't get to talk to the doctor." And she said "Don't worry, you talked..." I freaked out, left their place, immediately bought a pack of cigarettes and smoked, terrified of what I'd said."
That seems really interesting and a bit unsettling too! I had no idea how this process works, so this insight by Joaquin is really something. Thanks for sharing 😊
What do you mean 'terrified of what I'd said" , what did phoneix even say? From what I read, he spoke a hypnotist, probably got hypnotized and fell asleep then woke up ???

I understand smoking kills, but criticizing and nagging someone to stop doing something just because you don’t believe in it is naggy. People who do smoke don’t nag the people that don’t smoke 🤷♀️
Tbh I do find it very annoying when people smoke in public because it affects everyone around them. I also don't think it sets a good role model. However, it's pretty rude to keep pointing it out like that
@Arkeves You are quite right. Tobacco has been around and part of cultures since culture began. But that is not the only ingredient in today's version. The social programming part began in the 60s when companies were forced to put warning labels on their products.
Arkeves how does it being naturally occurring and widely used disprove what he said? Regardless people don’t start smoking cigarettes for the health benefits unless you take cigarette adds from the 50s as fact.
We need guys like him because I cringe every time non smokers pretend to smoke on camera and it just looks so bad, awkward and weird. It's something smokers can usually notice more often than non smokers.
yeah, its very easy to spot for anyone that smokes, but wouldn't it be better to just teach the actors how to pretend instead of wanting people to really smoke?
I thought I could never quit. Had smoked for close to 30 years and I'm only 41. I have a 3 year old daughter who complained about the smell. She started asking me about what I was doing while smoking. One day I got tired of being a slave to it. I just finished a pack on the 13th of October 2019 and that was that. I has my wife silently cheering me on. Drank like a gallon of water a day and ate sunflower seeds like a lunatic for 2 weeks and after 2 weeks, I knew I was over the hump. Haven't looked back. Cold turkey and walking through fire for two weeks till the brain adjusts is the only way.
I'm so happy for you and your family, it's only day2 since i stop i just want to get over with it, sometimes i can feel its not better i don't feel better, day2 and got a lot I've eaten urge to smoke but i always think that if i let my mind to do it, it will always will do. Like it's hard to smoke with the stressful life, But i will try my best. Only 21 years of old!
Rory Macdonald It’s a psychological trick to deal with the oral fixation. The brain is always tricking us that we need that cigarette because it becomes a routine. If we trick it by doing something else, like using sunflower seeds or lollipops or anything where hand to mouth movement is constantly involved, it makes the cravings easier. I truly are pounds of sunflower seeds for like two weeks. It kept my mind distracted. Then one day I went hours and hours without thinking bout a cigarette and I knew I was not addicted anymore. It’s more psychological than truly being physically addicted.
I get what you mean. But I think that most of us have experienced certain addictions through our lives. It could be smoking, it could be food or drinking and etc. I'm not saying that these addictions are similar, but because of that, I guess, we can feel for or in a certain way relate to Joaquin who publicly spoke about his struggles 👍
my mam tryed to give up smoking cos she wanted save money but we begged her to start smoking again becouse she became more unreasonible and would lose her shit at the drop of a hat.
As a smoker, I've tried numerous times to quit. It's hard. It's very hard. I strongly disagree with Fallon, and the audience trying to guilt-trip him. If you've never dealt with nicotine, you can't comprehend how difficult it is to stop.
I've been a smoker for almost 3 decades. I quit smoking 3 years ago. I tried really hard at least 3 times before this last time. So I can say I know how easy it can be to think It's just a wedding, or a party, or a special moment, nothing will happen, won't smoke again just one to remember. It is hard as fu... I do comprehend perfectly. I wish I never started smoking when being a teenager to look cool, tough and more "mature". That it was the way that marketing was in my teens, it worked, I had not a single friend who didn't smoke then. I don't know if it is late for me and smoking for 28 years might have taken a toll on me and it will cost me to part much sooner. After 3 years I'm still having cravings. Never start smoking it is not worth at all. One of my top 3 biggest regrets when watching backwards near my 50's.
He uses them as a mood stabilising by the looks of it. I smoked for 30 years, and gave up now for 2 years and no patches, no gum. You just need to stop, it’s hard. And yes I miss them.
My dad did the same; smoked for around 30 years to help cope with problems. But found a new partner who also smoked and they quit together immediately with no looking back, they are so much happier now!

CountDoucheula there’s tar when you roll. It’s the same, smoking a pack of woods is the same as smoking a pack of cigarettes. Unless you use a bong. It has less PAH than cigarettes (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) But has it’s own cons, depending on the person.

I don't think so man, you can't let someone cut themself just because it's their choice, you can see that at the start of the video he doesn't say, "I don't care if you want me to stop, I like it" he says "I don't wanna smoke either but... is hard to stop" that's not a choice, is an adiction
Cigarettes dont actually help anxiety at all, if you smoke the whole time it basically becomes to either satisfy the nicotine addiction or something to do with your hands when you're feeling anxious but it doesnt actually relax you, then minute you're done smoking you will be anxious again.
@@Joke8372 from personally experience it can occasionally help take your mind off things for a few minutes but it doesnt actually make the anxiety go away, also it's not going to stop you from having a panick attack just mild anxiety.

@Dick Thick'em Not really at all though. I don't know anybody who smokes like a 3rd of the cig and puts it out. I also don't know anyone who smokes without stopping in between cigs while sober. I personally only smoke when I'm drunk and I don't buy tobacco I just get given it by all my friends since I don't have the money. They all smoke a lot.
And plus the joker is literally the most recent role he’s played. He’s been acting since like the 90s. He doesn’t even have a certain kind of role. That’s what makes him a great actor. He doesn’t have a type. He can act literally any role
Dick Thick'em your insecurities are showing hard. Keep your mouth shut next time dumb kid and if you’re not a kid it’s sad that you’re grown and still acting immature. Save yourself the embarrassment.
Well personally smoking is the hardest to quit. It's like a friend you always have when in need, quitting removes your little friend and cold sweating stress and random anger sadness happens for a month. I tried but god it is hard and i really look up to people who are able to go through those weeks of quitting
I've always found that the hardest part of quitting smoking is the first couple of days. Choosing a day to go from smoker to non smoker and actually doing it is really hard. But once you've gotten though the first week it just gets easier and easier. At least it does for me. Haven't touched the things in a year and I never even feel tempted. If anything, if I smell or see someone else smoking I feel grossed out by it now, rather than tempted by it.
The hardest part of quitting smoking is the rest of your life. Trust me I've been there thinking I quitted easily, nothing will happen for just one. The more times you have tried, the harder it gets with time. The last time was at least my fourth and it's been 3 years without a smoke, this time I know that when talking about smoking I am as easy to smoke again as an alcoholic is to drink again with just one drink.
I particularly love the scene in Joker when he's talking to the social worker and he smokes right down to the filter. The way it's shot you can practically smell the smoke on screen. Anyone who smokes knows what I'm talking about.

Stay lit and proud 😉

Not until my mom recommended me to psilocybin mushrooms treatment. Psilocybin treatment saved my life honestly. 6 years totally clean. Never thought I would be saying this about mushrooms.
I love hearing great life changing stories like this. A really interesting quote by JP I found on IMDB quotes:
"It's been a year since last time I tried to give up smoking.

Why sunflower seeds?
Rory Macdonald It’s a psychological trick to deal with the oral fixation. The brain is always tricking us that we need that cigarette because it becomes a routine. If we trick it by doing something else, like using sunflower seeds or lollipops or anything where hand to mouth movement is constantly involved, it makes the cravings easier. I truly are pounds of sunflower seeds for like two weeks. It kept my mind distracted. Then one day I went hours and hours without thinking bout a cigarette and I knew I was not addicted anymore. It’s more psychological than truly being physically addicted.

Nothing lowkey about it. Joaquin is one of my cinematic crushes.
Legends say the cop is still asking us to take it easy
They say the quieter ones are sassier, cooler and crazier.
Joaquin is a living example.
👍😊
It's his life, let him figure shit out by himself.
Hi Max
Nothing to figure out. He know's what it does to him. He's a grown up, everyone has a vice. Pick your poison
that's the thing. He can't. "it's hard to stop"
Alejandro Bernardino yea that's what it seems like ppl don't realize, he knows it's bad and damaging but if it gets him threw the day and he's aware of the issue then let him live his life.
sup mad max
2:27 notice how he blows the smoke away from the interviewer
I always love how non smokers just say yeah quit. The exact problem with people today in so many areas just have no real world experience or idea of the addictive nature of cigarettes.
It’s a psychological addiction. A severe comfort blanket and friend to those who love solitude. You don’t just quit. It’s like a drawn out breakup. It fucking sucks.
How does that even make sense? So just because you haven’t went through the experience means u can’t encourage someone to stop something dangerous for u
yeah quit
@@livinmegadopelee3776 behavioral and chemical addiction combo wombo.
I'm an ex-smoker and I'm telling you "yeah, quit"
Joaquin literally played himself in Joker. This man is extremely talented, and it feels great knowing people have started to appreciate him.
👍❤

“Why do we judge life by the years instead of how good the years were?” -Gabriel Iglesias
Craig Bennett II it’s seems so wrong from Gabriel Iglesias😂
That quote sucks
Michael P. Jackson Thank you! Very nice!
That’s such a shitty way of looking at life lol you can live a lot of years and still be happy
Bro most people do not think of life like that
just be yourself and life is amazing even when you are alone..
I smoked for ten years and I’m five months clean now. At first it feels like your identity is taken away, you become so irritable that you hate yourself. Once you get past that phase, you good. Still you, just healthier and glowing.
Nice! Congratulations on that! 😊👍🙏😊
Joana Thank you so much!
Monroe X i heard those first three days are the absolute toughest. Is this true ?
@@Cheezy_Bunz For me, only kinda. I'd say the first three days were the only days with bad physical withdrawals. So uncomfortable. After that begins in my opinion, the real challenge.
You beat the psysical withdrawals and after that you have to beat yourself. It's all mental games after that. The "tobacco demons" start telling your mind that it's not that bad. Why live life with limitations etc.
It's all bullshit made up by your dopamine/serotonine hungry brain. Hardest part is recognising that your brain is lying to yourself.
Sorry for the rant lol
Monroe X damn that is some scary shit addiction i strong... but i can quit anytime just so you know anytime i tell you
Look he's a grown man, he knows the consequences of smoking and its his choice, let the guy do what he likes. He looks hot af smoking as Joker in that clip too.
You're right, it's his personal choice in the end 👍
I don't think so man, you can't let someone cut themself just because it's their choice, you can see that at the start of the video he doesn't say, "I don't care if you want me to stop, I like it" he says "I don't wanna smoke either but... is hard to stop" that's not a choice, is an adiction
@@freyzerb.castro9124 Also true 🙏 It's quite complex situation, to be honest.
Totally, and really who gives a toss.
@@freyzerb.castro9124 You worry about you, that should be your main concern. Mind your own buisness.
The cigarettes probably help with his anxiety, but he still needs to quit😢
True! 🙏
Cigarettes dont actually help anxiety at all, if you smoke the whole time it basically becomes to either satisfy the nicotine addiction or something to do with your hands when you're feeling anxious but it doesnt actually relax you, then minute you're done smoking you will be anxious again.
thepandorica1 so it does help, just not for long?
@@Joke8372 from personally experience it can occasionally help take your mind off things for a few minutes but it doesnt actually make the anxiety go away, also it's not going to stop you from having a panick attack just mild anxiety.
thepandorica1 Yeah I just meant that it temporarily helped him. Obviously there aren’t really any good effects of smoking.
I love how brave Joaquin was for asking the one person in the audience if they would like to have a smoke with him and than calling out thier bullshit when they said no just because it is no longer socially acceptable and basically said fuck them do what makes YOU feel good everyone else does!
The Cigarette just look 1200% sexier when Joaquin smokes them
A real smoker sees a cigarette as a steak. That's the problem
Luckily I'm a vegan smoker
@@gustavostella5202 you smoke Spirits then right? aren’t they one of two vegan brands?
No they don’t
It equates with food somehow... toxicity.
After two days of not eating at all
Is it a problem? We all have one life and if he wants to smoke let him smoke
Jimmy: *sigh* "I'm not gonna quit drinking..."
most sincere he's ever been on air
Well, Pheonix's smoking style is unique and it certainly suits him for the joker character.
@Dick Thick'em Not really at all though. I don't know anybody who smokes like a 3rd of the cig and puts it out. I also don't know anyone who smokes without stopping in between cigs while sober. I also don't know anyone who smokes while chewing gum. All of those would be very strange things. I personally only smoke when I'm drunk and I don't buy tobacco I just get given it by all my friends since I don't have the money. They all smoke a lot.
@Dick Thick'em leave him alone you twat
And plus the joker is literally the most recent role he’s played. He’s been acting since like the 90s. He doesn’t even have a certain kind of role. That’s what makes him a great actor. He doesn’t have a type. He can act literally any role
He just has a certain swagger about his mannerisms
Dick Thick'em your insecurities are showing hard. Keep your mouth shut next time dumb kid and if you’re not a kid it’s sad that you’re grown and still acting immature. Save yourself the embarrassment.
I loved the one cop protecting Phoenix saying “take it easy, take it easy” in a New York accent. Seemed out of a movie ironically
True! 😊
3:32 that guy is like Arthur in Joker when he had that dream but this actually happened
Wow 😊👍
Well personally smoking is the hardest to quit. It's like a friend you always have when in need, quitting removes your little friend and cold sweating stress and random anger sadness happens for a month. I tried but god it is hard and i really look up to people who are able to go through those weeks of quitting
Wish you all the best ❤️
Jimmy Fallon: “Why won’t you stop smoking?”
Phoenix: “Why won’t you stop drinking? ”
YES it's hard to quit, but it can be done. I quit 22 years ago cold turkey and never looked back.
Well done! 👍
Well it's great that you quit eating cold turkey but you should quit smoking too.
I might be a little dumb or missing something, but what’s cold turkey mean?

Ohhh thanks
I've always found that the hardest part of quitting smoking is the first couple of days. Choosing a day to go from smoker to non smoker and actually doing it is really hard. But once you've gotten though the first week it just gets easier and easier. At least it does for me. Haven't touched the things in a year and I never even feel tempted. If anything, if I smell or see someone else smoking I feel grossed out by it now, rather than tempted by it.
Thank you for sharing your story! My dad had a similar experience:) Well done! 👏🏻❤
I'm super glad you could stop, thanks for sharing the story. I believe it was a motivation for others too.
Yes you are right, I find the hardest part when you do things while smoking, separating those 2 things is hard as fuck.
You did great . Always be carefull cause you might be tempted later
Anyone who smokes knows what I'm talking about.
why do i get nervous when Joaquin phoenix is on a talk show
''Joker'' effect! :D
This comment section is gold.
jimmy : when did you start smoking? joaquin : uhhhh eleven-*downs drink*
Isn't that the age when River died
Tauqueisha Chester i think he was older when river died but i might be wrong
I don’t know why I just sat here and watch this man smoke cigarettes for nine minutes on different occasions.
Thank you for watching regardless 😊
